- Anogar, on 10/10/2007, -16/+56I agree. Due to mass produced, low quality food - 'fast food' in the USA is actually a very cheap option for low-income families. I say make the crap expensive, and then provide further incentives to purchase healthy grocery store goods.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -6/+31Ugh - where to begin... People actively make a lifestyle choice to eat fast food. They can make food at home far cheaper than fast food but are too lazy to prepare it. This lack of decision making skills probably has a lot to do with why they are poor in the first place. Also it is the most unamerican thing I've ever heard in a while to want fast food to be more expensive so as to save stupid people from themselves. McDonalds also offers lots of food that isn't extremely high in fat. So why destroy a company's profits? The problem with obesity is not only the garbage that fat people are putting into themselves but also the sedentary lifestyle that those people live. You could make all fast food 10 times as expensive and all you would do is mess the economy up really badly. There would still be a lot of fat people in America.
- Infantrydude, on 10/10/2007, -1/+20Taxing fast food will also cause the price of healthy food to go up. More people buy the healthy food... the demand goes up...prices increase...
The problem is not so much what you eat but how much (calories) and to exercise will power.
I know I know bad words - Protonz, on 10/10/2007, -5/+22Taxes are NEVER a good idea. Can't figure out why you idiots want government to babysit you. GROW THE ***** UP. PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY. bah...
If you want to do 'something', take away all the frickin gov't subsidies to farmers that churn out the crap that goes into mcdonalds. - Diggtatorship, on 10/10/2007, -6/+21A lot less of an obesity problem... or, more likely, a lot more credit card debt
- rune420, on 10/10/2007, -1/+14Please elaborate.
- datastorageguy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+13I just don't buy the argument that fast food is cheaper and thus lower income people buy it and become obese. I can go to the grocery store and buy enough chicken to feed 2 people dinner for around $4.00. I know this because this is what I do. Fast food is about laziness and gluttony.
- allenthar, on 10/10/2007, -2/+14Sin taxes aren't a replacement for personal responsibility.
- Haohmaru, on 10/10/2007, -0/+12The real question is: Why would you go to Turkey and eat at a Burger King?
- Sparkster185, on 10/10/2007, -3/+14http://duggmirror.com
- Puppetfunk, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11What ***** superhero says ZAZAZA when they take off?
- cactus476, on 10/10/2007, -5/+15Because what they purchase relates to how much my choice of food costs.
- bromar, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10*****, I know exactly where this Burger King is, and its in the bloody airport. Airport food does not count as a comparison to actual prices. Like anywhere else, a fast food meal at an airport is like 15 bucks. Poster is not giving the facts at all.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8Ah yes, regulation of other's choices through government taxation. Why not just stand outside a fast food establishment with a gun?

- rudy23, on 10/10/2007, -6/+14is a turkey burger like mad cheap in turkey?
- danejaneiro, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7No too good to speak the English, yes?
- boostgeek, on 10/10/2007, -2/+9Wtf is a pack of fries? Honestly who calls it a pack?
- strangewill, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Theres a different idea from protecting the public (Police/Fire/Health/Education) and telling you how to live your life (we deem this unethical to eat/smoke/anally receive, we'll tax the hell out of it), it isn't the government's job to make sure I eat right, and it's dumb for me or anyone to think it's the government's fault for not stepping in.
He's complaining about the latter. Not asking for anarchy. - madeingermany, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7I really find that hard to believe.
Compare to the Big Mac Index:
http://www.economist.com/finance/displaystory.cfm?story_id=9448015
A Big Mac in Turkey costs the equivalent of 3.66 USD.
Unfortunately http://www.burgerking.com.tr doesn't have prices... - kelchm, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Probably not. We would just have alot more poor people.
- robojerk, on 10/10/2007, -2/+9If I could bury Anogar down any more I would.. The sin tax is by far the most unamerican concept of all time. Taxing things like cigarettes, alcohol, and fast food is totally unfair. California loves to try to attatch taxes to cigarettes all the time, especially to raise money for education, yet each time the successfully pass a tax the money never seems to go there.
If the government needs more money for education, health care, or other services they should attatch those taxes on common things that everyone purchases, not an isolated group. - bromar, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7You are full of crap. I'm sorry egg but you just got plain ripped off. In Zurich you can go to a fancy restaurant, order a 3 course meal, and pay about 45US each. I'm sorry dude, but they saw you coming.
Here's a tip, read the menu before you go in, and don't except the bread they offer you in the beginning, cause they try to charge you lots of money for it, cause its not on the menu. - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8Any chance for the diggtards to bash fast food, thats what. Expect a story about how bottled water raped their dog a bit later too.
- virtualfred, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7The question is: WTF were you doing in a Burger King in Turkey anyways?
Go get yourself some kebap! - exscind, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7Actually, it's sad but that's EXACTLY what they are.
- Albionshores, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Not necessarily, the greater the demand the surer the sale and efficiency of the production, the less the profit margin to ensure business. Sell more at same cost to produce with lower profit margins = same profit for business but cheaper price.
Establish more of a market for healthy food and the cost of production drops, people can produce it for less. Beyond that remove subsidies and let a freemarket lower the price. - brstilson, on 10/10/2007, -8/+14Because I pay higher health insurance rates because of what people eat.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7*****, pure ***** *****. Chips and snacks cost more than healthier, more filling things already. Buy a ***** case of rice.
Poor people make bad choices, thats often why they are poor in the first place. Its not a cost issue. - basilmurphy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6I don't think increasing the price would have a dramatic effect on the fat problem. Just look at smokers... most do not quit because the price has gone up - and it's gone up and up and up many times. I think price is just one factor... and a small one at that. It's the ease of access, and indoctrination that really gets people addicted to this fast food lifestyle. Heck, some schools have a McDonalds as the cafeteria.
- madeingermany, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Just found this post from 5/2006 - http://en.allexperts.com/q/Turkey-207/Cost-living-Istanbul.htm
"I just ate double whopper menu today at burger king and paid like 9 lira"
9 TRL = 7 USD
I really doubt that the story is true, if a double whopper menu costs the same.... - bromar, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5shift you are truly ignorant if you think obesity is not a life choice. It is cheaper to make your own healthy food then to buy fast food. Yes some peoples metabolisms are different, but that doesn't make them obese, that makes them have to make better decisions.
Being obese is just like smoking, you are choosing to kill yourself, because you like what you are doing. - Th3_anOmoLy, on 10/10/2007, -14/+19What does anything have to do with the price of fries in Turkey?
- sdwilly, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5You have to buy common sense now?
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5if you spend the $20 on the chicken and the veggies and rice and spices its going to be enough for multiple meals for multiple people.
- RyeBrye, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6"I bet if fast food cost that much here in the states we'd have a lot less of an obesity problem."
I bet if you knew jack ***** about economics, you wouldn't get angry at the world so much. - bromar, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Thats not true, its not about caloric intake, its about nutritional value, 2 bucks of apples with have way more nutritional value then 2 bucks of chips. Its people not having self control and giving in to the flavour.
- slayerab, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5No, the addicts that are being taxed for the sin wouldn't understand why they are being taxed, and would complain about the high price, and still buy whatever they are being sinned taxed for. How do I know this? My dad has a pack of cigarettes every other day habit even thought New York charges 6 dollars per carton.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4I have mostly Libertarian views, so I really am not a pro-war on drugs person. I want the government out of my life.
- Shiftgood, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5mikesbaker.
Thank you for not being a stupid about all this. Fat = Genetics... Lazy and fat = lifestyle choice.. Dont push your ideals on other people. let them be fat and gross if they want. - ripple01, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4I think you meant $6 a pack...
- SeBBBe, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4And I thought the $8,70 USD a Whopper costs in Sweden was pretty bad, but damn...
- Utku, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5OK, I think some translation is due.
On the top of the receipt it says "Ata. Hv. Limani, Istanbul" which is at Ataturk Airport, the main airport in Istanbul.
Secondy it says "B.Patates" which is Large Fries.
I know from personal experience that the Burger King at Ataturk Airport is literally double prices of normal Burger King. So, you're looking at $6.60 for large fries at the aiport. It would be half that price anywhere else in town, that's how much you'd pay for a Whopper meal.
Overpriced food at the airport? That's nothing new. - TheHydrogens, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5There was no mention of anarchy there... you kinda pulled that out of your ass.. Taxes are not the only thing that keep us from being a 3rd world country... you could tax the ***** out of a 3rd world country and they would still be a 3rd world country.
It is not the government's job to keep people from eating themselves to death. If you want the government to take all of your money and tell you what is good for you, go be a communist. - madeingermany, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Compare to the Big Mac Index:
http://www.economist.com/finance/displaystory.cfm?story_id=9448015
A Big Mac in Turkey costs the equivalent of 3.66 USD.
I'm not buying the story. - metamethod, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4stay away from the tourist traps!
- eggraid, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5In Zurich (CH) you can have burgers with fries for two and, say two beers and expect to pay 100SF (about 80 USD). Even more if you get close to the airport!
- waniwen, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Fast food isn't the reason why america is fat. its because no one eats right regardless and no boady works out enough. most people sit at desks and drive to work. In Europe the amount of people who bike or walk to work is much greater, therefore they get in more excercise. Stop blaming fastfood companies for obesity in america. I can go to the restaurant down the street and get a meal that is even worse then a meal at a fast food place.
- HypocriteDigg, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3WTF? The higher the demand, the higher the price? You're an idiot.
