- Jumboto, on 10/12/2007, -4/+59Q: "What motivates humankind to burrow deep into the Earth?"
A: Aliens.
Just ask you know who. - GrandBreton, on 10/10/2007, -6/+33Voldemort?
- loww, on 10/10/2007, -2/+28When I look at these I think Top 7 ultimate places for Hide and Seek.
- silfiriel, on 10/10/2007, -1/+22no, tom cruise
- sabach, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10Anal much?
- SiNN4R, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9The pictures taken in the Disney cave look like a crazy cultist compound. I wouldn't drink any koolaid offered to me in there.
- zlintux, on 10/10/2007, -4/+13Someone didn't actually do fact-checking for their article.
There are no underground tunnels beneath Magic Mountain. There are tunnels, yes, but they are ground level, and the park itself is above them. Hard to qualify it as an "underground wonder"...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magic_Kingdom#Constru ... - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+10For some reason I'm not really surprised Disneyworld has its own cave.
- 1randomnumber, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Well they are under a big pile of dirt, so it would seem that they are indeed "underground." Semantics and naming conventions be damned, they're underground. If I called my basement the "first floor" and the first floor the second, would the basement no longer be underground?
- hoodmonkey, on 10/10/2007, -2/+9Awesome as usual. Were there anyone in those coffins?
- Shelter22, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Did You Know?
Mammoth Cave is the world's longest known cave. In fact it is so long that if the second and third longest caves in the world were joined together, Mammoth Cave would still be the planet's longest cave and have nearly 100 miles left over!
http://www.nps.gov/maca/ - erinthefunk, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7and don't forget the Seattle "underground" - cool stuff.

- Calculon, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Cool.. im going to Paris in 3 days and planned on the catacomb tour already. looks pretty neat!
- Kitsune818, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Disney isn't so much an underground tunnel as it is the first floor of the building.. They built the "tunnel" section first, buried it, then built the park that the public sees on top of that. You enter the tunnels at ground level. It's actually quite a brilliant piece of engineering. All the power lines, water pipes, sewage, etc, runs under there, so it can be easily repaired without disrupting the park above. You can get from anywhere in the park to another point in just a few minutes without having to go through the maze above. Celebrities travel down there unmolested by the public. There are even chutes that carry the garbage out of the park down there.
- redfox2600, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Why isn't the Chapel of Saint Kinga listed?
http://img2.travelblog.org/Photos/12661/94430/f/61 ... - xerexes1, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5The catacombs in Paris are incredible, and well worth a visit. Some of the bones are arranged in patterns, others are used to form pillars - so it's architectural and a bit surreal. Coober Pedy is also an interesting visit, although, given the location, building underground is simply a necessity.
- suxmonkey, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7Apparently there are still corpses in those coffins, though those poor bastards in the pine boxes probably haven't survived as well as the rich guys who could afford to get the fine mahogany equivalent.
- JAPHacake, on 06/11/2009, -3/+7Great find, Dugg!
- sm0ky, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Some weird stuff going on out there. I heard that the Denver Airport had an underground dwelling also, but have not seen pics of this. I did find that within the Denver Airport they have some wild art, that makes me believe that it could mean something strange may be going on.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XHKrEFiDn6E - jasz, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5they missed my favorite one... Zipaquira's underground salt Cathedral..
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salt_Cathedral_of_Zip ... - wesb, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Great place to go, if a bit freaky! Especially when this is above the entrance:
“Arrete! C'est ici L'Empire de la Morte”
“Stop! This is the empire of the dead”
Another nice touch was making designs like hearts with the skulls:
http://images.google.com/images?svnum=10&um=1&hl=e ... - Albionshores, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6That looks like some pretty awesome real-estate in Hungary - they should forget the tours, open it up full time and start using them again. I'm thinking 24 hour Kasbah type markets and nightlife...
Beer's cheap in Hungary too. - ColonelJessup, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5An eighth wonder would be a server capable of handling the digg effect.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I've been to the last one, cooby pedy in australia, cool place. they have a sand and oil golf course, and a guy called crocodile harry
- anks329, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Internal Server Error... Mirror anyone?
- Dmaulchris, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4No, some crazy muggle actor.
- Kenelm, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3You won't see much on a tour... Just some bones and skulls, and that's all.
The coolest things to see are far deeper than tours go, but they won't take you there because of the weridos living there. These guys are responsible of many amazing carvings on walls and some cool looking bone sculptures, but they also tend to kill anyone they cross.
There are about twenty bodies found each year in these catacombs, bodies of people who wanted to venture out there. - Clixx13, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3If you overlooked everything in the article for the place names, I pity you.
- dagnabbit, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Actually, this is not quite correct. The "underground" tunnels are actually just the first floor of the park. All of the rides, etc. are on the second story.
edit: see zlintux's comment below. - kelcan, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2These are not the actual 7 underground wonders of the world. Where is the longest underground river in the world from Palawan, Philippines?
- picsectionpleez, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2agreed +1
- shadowspawn, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2There was some really cool ***** in Turkey, and only if you can get inside of them with someone who has permission to study them. This one underground city which people housed cattle, cooking and sleeping areas, smoking areas and had even a system for waste... was quite impenetrable. It's so unstable (after the earthquakes) that they won't let anyone really go into the deeper parts but there is this one ventilation shaft which has handholds carved into the sandstone. But if you toss a rock, it takes over 7 seconds to impact. that's an acceleration of 32ft per second per second... you do the math.
After LOTR I kinda understood where the story was coming from. - omnithought, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Wow. I'm already going to France to check out a bunch of WW2 sites, but I'll definitely have to make a detour and check out those catacombs!
- Delta00, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Well, "build stuff" wasn't the real point. At some point, we had to remove several millions of corpses from an overcrowded cemetery that was the origin of some public health issues. An ancient stone quarry outside Paris (it was a looong time ago) was chosen. I suppose that in order to show some respect to the dead, they didn't just dump everything in a heap of bones...
This said, I could find sooo many things that we frenchmen can't do. But I wouldn't be rude to you, would I?
And also, if you happen to have a friend who is from Paris, you can ask him for a tour of the "unofficial" catacumbs. That's illegal but mostly tolerated as long as you behave properly, and it's a very different experience from the usual tourist tour. - carbonetc, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2The vaults under Edinburgh might be a good addition, although I guess they aren't technically underground since they were built above it with the city built on top of them.
- hoodmonkey, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Did you even read the content before commenting?
Since we're just grasping random numbers with no apparent knowledge of internet advertising: Your comment just made Digg a few hundred dollars. Way to go, moron!
It's like belittling someone for watching a television show on the Discovery Channel because it interested them. The site doesn't appear to be plastered with advertising, so what's the deal? - Shelter22, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2good luck finding them. there aren't a lot of signs in the area, i had to end up asking someone where they were. also, when i was there they were closed and you couldn't go in... that was a couple years ago though, but you might want to call before you leave your hotel or whatever.
- swanny89, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2There's a conspiracy theory that the Denver Airport is going to be used as a control center for the western region of the NWO. IT gets pretty crazy, building up to underground bases housing reptilian aliens complete with beacons up top in full view of everyone to direct secret government ships based on alien technology once the NWO coup has been declared. Its actually a lot of fun to read if you can find a comprehensive site about it.
- silfiriel, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2and just how did we did that?
- wesb, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Umm... completely wrong.
There are parts where the public are free to walk around, as it said in the article. Pretty substantial, could easily spend an hour down there. They checked all the people for bones in their bags on the way out. - Dawnofanewday, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Pretty cool pics, a little too clostrophobic to actually go see this stuff so pics will have to do!

www.braveheartads.com/dawnwilson - edwartica, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1The history channel has been doing a series of secret underground worlds, or something like that. Anyways, a few of these are talked about - with a lot more depth (no pun intended).
- Otto, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2There's this fascinating thing called "Google" which can tell you facts from very little information to start with.
Google for "Ozarks" and you'll have your answer right away. - MScrip, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1You should. I used to work at Disney, and there is so much cool stuff backstage!!! My parents took the backstage tour, and we had so much to talk about afterwards!
- masterkenobi, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I don't understand why the underground tomb for the first emperor of China wasn't listed here. They built practically an entire city underground:
http://entertainment.timesonline.co.uk/tol/arts_an ... - SydeffeX, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Ninja Turtles 2 ?!?!
- davestar, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1That site got the story slightly wrong. In most cases the bones were from existing overcrowded cemetaries, not the newly dead, so the bodies were already decayed..
- max420, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I am pretty sure they have flood lights...
- Zawamura, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Some really amazing pictures. Would be cool to see those places irl.
