7 Sides of the World’s Most Infamous Street Artist [PICS]
weburbanist.com — The Banksy Paradox... Sounds pretty cool, well it is.

- nahsrocketeer75, on 04/24/2008, -3/+65Most interesting thing I've seen on Digg today (maybe this week). I'd never heard of Banksy, despite his worldwide fame. The pics of his art are fabulous. One question: If his identity is such a mystery, how does he receive the six-figure sums that have reportedly been paid for some of his works?
- kufu91, on 04/24/2008, -0/+47he has an agent
- tikal2k, on 04/24/2008, -3/+4He's only a mystery to you. Brad and Angelina have met him. Maybe even Tom (gasp!) Cruise.
- archivist, on 04/24/2008, -0/+6they say his name is Robert Banks
- diegogarcia12, on 04/24/2008, -4/+0There's information on Google about who he is. I won't link to it, I respect him a little (although his recent works, such as the Elephant stunt, are generally awful). There's also a few photos of him.
- heaso, on 04/24/2008, -1/+39The first stencil "Keep your coins, I want change" IS NOT Banksy. It's by an artist called Meek.

http://www.spraycampaign.com/
Meek has done this piece around Melbourne and he got the source from a song. There is a profile on him in the book "Stencil Graffiti Capital : Melbourne".
It is frustrating how everyone assumes when a stencil is good - it must be Banksy.- spyraled, on 04/24/2008, -1/+11Dugg for actually knowing that, most people on here don't.
As great as Banksy's work is, I actually like this piece by Meek more than anything Banksy has done. - larssss, on 04/24/2008, -1/+0I was amazed that no one else had mentioned this until i looked in the replies. I've been to melbourne and seen that exact stencil. While there are some banksy's there, that one is indeed by Meek
- RustyJ, on 04/24/2008, -0/+3I know exactly what you mean about the stencil thing. I have a friend who posted some of his stencils on the internet, and people actually lifted the images and reposted, claiming that they were "obviously some of banksy's work".
- spyraled, on 04/24/2008, -1/+11Dugg for actually knowing that, most people on here don't.
- manbear, on 04/24/2008, -1/+1thing is, he has a dealer, so he at least gets most of that money (usually the dealer takes a cut)... but unfortunately his work will probably go for millions in an auction, and he will see none of it.
- OwdenBowden, on 04/24/2008, -5/+1He is Marc Ecko.
- FrizzleyFry, on 04/24/2008, -1/+4You're a digger and you've never heard of Banksy? People are all over his tip here on Digg.
- junkwheel, on 04/24/2008, -1/+1His name is Robin Banks.
- sdrumsalot, on 04/24/2008, -0/+6His name is Robert Paulson...his name is Robert Paulson...his name is Robert Paulson
- Slices, on 04/24/2008, -1/+3I've heard from a reliable source his *true* name is actually Rick Astley. Makes sense, if you think of it!
- metasin, on 04/25/2008, -0/+1His name is Remy Peterson.
- youtellme8, on 04/24/2008, -3/+95Bansky is a hero. He takes oppressive city sights and fills them with art that is always smart and funny, and frequently visually attractive. Thank you Bansky.
- recruz, on 04/24/2008, -4/+1i'm not sure i would call him a hero- my definition of a hero is a person that saves lives or does something 'heroic'. Being smart, funny and creating visually attractive art does not constitute heroic in my book. Now if you can directly attribute a work of his art to saving a life or a set of lives, then i will reconsider.
- slicedoranges, on 04/24/2008, -8/+3Not to mention the fact that what he does is illegal. Great art and everything, but the bottom line is that he's nothing more than a vandal.
- bakagaigin, on 04/24/2008, -2/+1...So? You think any of these messages could be made with such profound effect in a legal way?
- PlayRadioPlay, on 04/24/2008, -0/+2The fact that it's illegal doesn't mean that it isn't beautiful or ironic. He's a great artist.
- slicedoranges, on 04/30/2008, -0/+1I didn't say it wasn't beautiful or ironic. In fact, my first post says "great art." How dense can you get?
- scubaman5000, on 04/24/2008, -0/+3Kinda sounds like an artistic version of Robin Hood.
- raklos, on 04/24/2008, -0/+4*Banksy
- ALyken, on 04/24/2008, -0/+35I Live in the city where Banksy works and paints. I walk by his work every time I'm in the city centre, but it's still astounding. The house the article mentioned was put up for sale and was not worth much, but with Banksy's painting, on the side of the building, the price shot up way past the limit.
- silentdragoon, on 04/24/2008, -0/+2It's a great feeling to know you're in the presence of brilliance -- I'm always finding new ones, he's been incredibly prolific, and yet each is uniquely excellent.
- skyroket, on 04/24/2008, -0/+4There's a limit on how much you guys can sell your houses for??
- mikkee07, on 04/24/2008, -11/+5There is a dupe http://digg.com/odd_stuff/7_Sides_of_the_World_s_M ...
Looks like glitch- DeskFlyer, on 04/24/2008, -1/+5There were dozens of dupes in last nights 'upcoming' section, some were tripled and even quadrupled in the span of a minute. Looks like the second cat just meowed.
- jumico, on 04/24/2008, -1/+0If an article continues to get dugg to the front page it proboblly deserves to be there.
- iamnobody8614, on 04/24/2008, -0/+2he is saying that the dupe was a glitch, as in the submitter only posted it once, but it showed up twice
- Providence, on 04/24/2008, -2/+3We Don't Give A *****.
- khaavren, on 04/24/2008, -2/+10Banksy does some wonderful work, shame it takes him being a fugitive for his work to be recognized on a large scale. You dont see many artists' work yielding such worldwide attention in present day.
- suxmonkey, on 04/24/2008, -0/+31This is another one of my personal Banksy faves: http://flickr.com/photos/80424954@N00/2005512414/
- SirPopper, on 04/24/2008, -1/+2Yeah that is nice, too!
General Graffities from Banksy are very cool! - stonedthot, on 04/24/2008, -0/+1Great video collating some of his works http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1X7ZDbL5Zfk
- SirPopper, on 04/24/2008, -1/+2Yeah that is nice, too!
- SirPopper, on 04/24/2008, -7/+3Great submission I love Urban-style and Banksy [sure] too thanks a lot Zaibatsu!
My Fav

Banksy for Free: On Banksy's website, images of his work are sold for free and he humorously encourages 'buyers' to print it out "on gloss paper using the company printer ink when everyone else is at lunch." However, the works mentioned here and the pieces shown on his site are only a fraction of his contributions. To learn more, buy one of Banksy's books - or better yet, take one from the library, replace the dust cover, keep the book and return something provocative in its place!- maroon1872, on 04/24/2008, -0/+1dude if youre going to comment on an article put quotes where youre quoting verbatim. you even linked to the article... cmon man.
- SirPopper, on 04/25/2008, -0/+1Hm, dunno what the problem is? All do that! What is wrong with that?
- SirPopper, on 04/25/2008, -0/+1My friend I am so sorry when I have done this big mistake and forgot to set two quotes. [to coreect it, the text below the picture is not written by me.]
I only linked to my favor picture. I have seen it here a lot of times on digg.com, other people linked to youtube videos. Please tell me what is wrong with that.
- rabbitfighter, on 04/24/2008, -0/+3I happen to work in a library. Every day my coworkers and I lament the thievery of good books by people like you, MrsPopper, who believe they are the only people in the area that "understand" or "appreciate" the subjects that these books cover. The funny part is these subjects always have something to do with the subversive. Nothing makes me laugh more than a person who thinks they're "underground" stealing from a library. It completely negates the purpose.
In short, ***** you.- SirPopper, on 04/25/2008, -0/+1I think you should stay in your old library! There you can speak with your coworkers like the way you do it here in your reply. Maybe they like the f word, but not me.
I only can laugh about your reply and feel better to know that you are stay in a dusty room with dusty books, please stay there and read how to communicate in a smarter way and come back and try to communicate with me again!
Vote you down!

- Elliottx, on 04/24/2008, -4/+1I have to know who Banksy is. This guy/girl is amazing.
- bosssmiley, on 04/24/2008, -0/+10No you don't. It's the mystery that endures, not the explanation.
- fribhey, on 04/24/2008, -0/+3banksy is a guy
- Elliottx, on 04/24/2008, -2/+1I MUST KNOW!
- amanilaenvelope, on 04/24/2008, -1/+6banksy is truly is a artist. hes created a lot of art that sends powerful messages like this one . http://www.flickr.com/photos/omer/44260199/
- skyroket, on 04/24/2008, -5/+1I am failing to see the powerful message. Mickey Mouse and Ronald McDonald are products of capitalism and free enterprise markets in America and around the world. Is he trying to say they're torturing that girl and dragging her against her will?
- deadsnowden, on 04/24/2008, -0/+4not trying to be an ass or anything, but the banksy image is a play on this famous photo from the Vietnam war:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phan_Thi_Kim_Phuc
maybe that helps it make more sense - theantix, on 04/24/2008, -0/+3Interpreting artistic statements is not a science, but still... you fail it.
My initial interpretation would be that the artists feels that the international effects of the American empire go beyond the commercial impact of McD and Disney -- and the rest of the world see the warmongering in Vietnam (and presumably current events) as going hand in hand with mercentile American exports.
I'm sure other people can come up with other (and better) explanations than that. Regardless, you should be ashamed at your lack of interpretive skills.

- Mikhail101, on 04/24/2008, -7/+2They should still make make graffiti illegal with the exception of banksy his work is nuts. doesnt desecrate the building imho.
- Ryansmellsfarts, on 04/24/2008, -2/+1I love his/her work.
- KingGorilla, on 04/24/2008, -5/+5I think any of Banksy's work that has been bought should be destroyed or ruined somehow. I dunno just a thought
- bosssmiley, on 04/24/2008, -1/+2Inclined to agree. Somehow it just seems...right.
- thailand1972, on 04/24/2008, -2/+2Destroy everything YOU'VE bought then to underline your point. Or is this just some navel gazing?
- luckyguy2000, on 04/24/2008, -6/+7maybe bansky is a group of ppl instead of a single person.
- masterc, on 04/24/2008, -6/+3Maybe you should learn how to capitalize and spell out full words.
- EatMeat, on 04/24/2008, -2/+9oh damn! bitch is pulling out the red pen!
oh, pardon me:
Oh, damn! Bitch is pulling out the red pen!- goldenratiophi, on 04/24/2008, -1/+4You need a demonstrative adjective before "Bitch."
- koick, on 04/24/2008, -0/+2Nah, that's his name.
- EatMeat, on 04/24/2008, -2/+9oh damn! bitch is pulling out the red pen!
- masterc, on 04/24/2008, -6/+3Maybe you should learn how to capitalize and spell out full words.
- PrinceTimotheus, on 04/24/2008, -2/+4Banksy is awesome. Check out his website. http://www.banksy.co.uk/
There's also a sweet video montage of a lot of his work on youtube. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZOU8GIRUd_g- skyroket, on 04/24/2008, -0/+1Neato.
- omnikitty, on 04/24/2008, -2/+2Banksy is fantastic. I can't help but look up to him... and plaster his work on my already covered wall.
- thailand1972, on 04/24/2008, -9/+3Robert Banks is married, a regular church goer and tee-total. Some photos of him here:-
Some pics of Banksy:-

http://img.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2006/09/elephant1 ...- thscientist1, on 04/24/2008, -1/+2ur a *****.
- EatMeat, on 04/24/2008, -7/+2If/when I grow up, I want to be Banksy. Literally, BE him.
- RubineBoy, on 04/24/2008, -5/+3R.E.S.P.E.C.T.
- AzureRise, on 04/24/2008, -1/+6my a.u.t.h.o.r.i.t.a.h!
- skratchnerd, on 04/24/2008, -11/+2Big Up to Banksy for wrecking shop like a retard in vocational school
- Shelter22, on 04/24/2008, -0/+1Now that's funny. I just wish we'd get a story about DAIM, COPE, TWIST, etc. every now and then instead of every graf story being about this guy.
- petedee, on 04/24/2008, -1/+7The guys a legend, he even did a version of Stonehenge using porta-loos at the Glastonbury festival last year:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/coolkiddo/2400974565/ - borez, on 04/24/2008, -10/+3As much as I love Banksy's work, it ain't origional
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Fekner- TurbNasty, on 04/24/2008, -0/+1http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Situationist_Internat ...
- robotderek42, on 04/24/2008, -0/+9By God! That means Van Gogh isn't original either! He used paint on canvas…Van Gogh must have copied Rembrandt or Caravaggio. My God you're the most brilliant person I've run across on the internet.
- RetlawST, on 04/24/2008, -0/+2All art is a history of everything before it. Even avant-garde art, modern art, everything is what it is because of what came before it. Oftentimes, the movements that are really strange and far out there only existed because they wanted to create a countermovement, which still requires the original movement for inspiration.
- TurbNasty, on 04/24/2008, -9/+1you guys are fags.
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2359/2435594160_8dd ... - yagotmeseruchi, on 04/24/2008, -4/+1Can he produce flowing, calligraphic sequences of alphanumeric characters that resonate on the wall, under the various pressures graffiti artists fade? To me, that's at the heart of graffiti–I tend to think of him as a street artist, not really a graffiti artist. Maybe he's done that stuff; I dunno.
- abood, on 04/24/2008, -0/+3live 5 mins away from a banksy :D
- CedanticPunt, on 04/24/2008, -0/+1me too - the one outside the Brixton Academy in south london. If it's still there that is...
- TheDiscoPony, on 04/24/2008, -0/+1Banksy's my hero. His book is fantastic, if not solely for the fantastic anecdotes and quotes. When I was in London for a weekend, I ignored sight-seeing and just tracked down Banksy works.
- robotderek42, on 04/24/2008, -2/+1This author never explains the paradox. Poor title for an article.
- maroon1872, on 04/24/2008, -0/+2he explains many paradoxes. (one being that he makes complete bank(sky) on his work but remains such a mysterious figure)
sorry about the pun. - skyroket, on 04/24/2008, -0/+1It's those people who think paradox means "A fashion that is taken up with great enthusiasm for a brief period of time; a craze." A fad. It's a fad to think paradox means fad.
- maroon1872, on 04/24/2008, -0/+2he explains many paradoxes. (one being that he makes complete bank(sky) on his work but remains such a mysterious figure)
- schneby, on 04/24/2008, -0/+5The holy grail is to spend less time making the picture than it takes people to look at it. - Banksy
- Shelter22, on 04/24/2008, -3/+2God damn it people, Banksy is not the only good graffiti writer. I've seen about half a dozen graffiti stories on here and I think 4-5 of them were about this guy.
- RunJun, on 04/24/2008, -1/+6So write up an article or digg a site. That's how Digg works. You bring things on the internet that are interesting to the rest of the community.
- Tmac90, on 04/24/2008, -0/+2I have seen his work before, but i didn't know who he was or had a name! Thanks for sharing this!:D
- mrgoat, on 04/24/2008, -8/+3Here's a mystery for you. Renegade urban graffiti artist Banksy is clearly a guffhead of massive proportions, yet he's often feted as a genius straddling the bleeding edge of now. Why? Because his work looks dazzlingly clever to idiots. And apparently that'll do.
Read the rest: http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/story/0,,1 ...- spikespikespike, on 04/24/2008, -1/+5That article is a poorly written, juvenile, pathetic excuse for journalism. Buried.
- niceyuk, on 04/24/2008, -0/+1Charlie Brooker is an idiot. His TV show about bad TV was worse than the TV shows he was criticizing.
- MedHead, on 04/25/2008, -0/+1Great article. Pretty much exactly what I was thinking when I saw the graffiti.
- willskillz, on 04/24/2008, -0/+1Does anybody know if Banksy is the same person as Banks? Cause I've seen Banks a few times, but it's not stencil work it's like the old bubble & wild style graffiti.
- Slices, on 04/24/2008, -1/+8Amazing article, you did a great job! It was a clever approach, and the writing flows rather nicely.
Just remember: Banksy is a state of mind!
Also, this is my own humble contribution to the Banksy unofficial PR empire:
http://slices-of-life.com/who-is-bansky-no-one-rea ... - Beaches, on 04/24/2008, -5/+1http://www.pbase.com/dkay/image/58706545 that is one of my most favourite pieces of street art. its so true.
- espempire, on 04/24/2008, -3/+2he is a cheeky bastard and does it for the lulz
- DrONDeN, on 04/24/2008, -0/+1He's good. In fact he's so good that he induces dyslexia in half of the people who try to spell his name. It's Banksy not Bansky!
- LeRenard, on 04/24/2008, -0/+2The reason I like Bansky is that his work is understandable to most people. The larger portion of graffiti I encounter makes no sense to me, and is usually just someones "tag". I don't understand why it all has to look the same.. At least you can look at a Bansky and realize that's what it is. I'm also amazed at how jealous people get of the attention he receives (is he a he?). True art has always been dangerous.
- zomgwaffles, on 04/24/2008, -3/+4how about everyone quit pole jocking on this guy
- pkon, on 04/24/2008, -0/+1Now this is an artist who I appreciate not for his artwork, but the messages he can convey through it. I do not see it as a sign of vandalism but just a method of raising awareness in a comical way.
- PurpleDingo, on 04/24/2008, -1/+2Although I completely doubt it is the case, I really wish Bansky was a multiple-contributer personality. Then he could be immortal.
- killbotX, on 04/24/2008, -0/+1Banksy is my hero
- iknoritesrsly, on 04/24/2008, -0/+1I always get excited whenever I see a new Banksy I haven't seen before when I'm walking around over in the UK. He has such a unique style, it's so easy to recognize his stuff.
- slavetolust, on 04/24/2008, -0/+0One of my all time favorite artists. www.banksy.com
- troxell, on 04/24/2008, -1/+1i believe the first picture, "keep your coins.." isnt his work
- yellowfish04, on 04/24/2008, -0/+1can someone explain how he gets away with these? I mean my god, some of these must take 40+ hours to complete, they're so huge and intricate
- djembeplayer, on 04/24/2008, -0/+1Fantastic. Great messages being delivered through works of art…finally.
- sthang, on 04/24/2008, -0/+0Banksy newest work, amazing!
http://zombiecreep.blogspot.com/2007/05/banksy-rev ... - Disregard, on 04/24/2008, -0/+1Banksy, Nathan Barley made flesh.
- DougUpndown, on 04/24/2008, -0/+0Disagree. Nathan Barley is a *****. Banksy is not.
- jhirsch4, on 04/24/2008, -0/+0banksy is almost like a real life ' v ' from v for vendetta
- Key2gb, on 04/24/2008, -0/+1I really like the first image (change)...very cool article I haven't heard of Banksy until now...thanks Digg
- DavidA, on 04/24/2008, -0/+1Banksy = Robert Banks. Photo here: http://gawker.com/news/face-of-the-underground/ban ...
