- WackyWorld, on 05/15/2008, -2/+45I found this interesting list (Daytimer) of the worlds most dangerous occupations wher ethe number represents the risk factor (1 being normal).
Fishermen 21.3 Drowning
Timber cutters 20.6 Being struck by falling object
Airplane pilots 19.9 Crashes
Structural metal workers 13.1 Falls
Cab drivers 9.5 Homicide
Construction laborers 8.1 Vehicular accidents & falls
Roofers 5.9 Falls
Electric power installers/repairers 5.7 Electrocution
Truck drivers 5.3 Highway collisions
Farm occupations 5.1 Vehicular accidents
Police and detectives 3.4 Homicide & highway- upick, on 05/15/2008, -3/+5hey that's a nice list... you should digg that article... and send me a copy would love to read it!!
- Lagstorm, on 05/15/2008, -2/+0I cracked up at the title of this submission. Not that there's anything wrong with that. ***** YOU!
- RSS14, on 05/15/2008, -1/+6I have a question, are the numbers based on how BAD the death would be (which is theory), or how often that death occurs (which is statistical) ?
- jp12380, on 05/15/2008, -0/+6Sounds like how often death occurs.
- Enochulator, on 05/15/2008, -0/+10If it is how often, then pilots being 19.9, even though air travel is still the safest way to travel, and cops only 3.4, when we often hear police officers get killed in the line of duty? That doesn't make sense. I don't think the rating is based on frequency, but based on the level of risk of death involved with the job.
- Jrr6415sun, on 05/15/2008, -0/+7big commercial plane crashes may be rare, but small planes crash all the time. I'm sure pilot instructors and other small time pilots are included in that
- nitrojunky24, on 05/15/2008, -0/+3those numbers aren't as safe as they sound actually becouse they look at total miles flown look at it from incident per landing take off (the most dangerous part of the flight) and numbers don't look quite as good any more.
- swanny89, on 05/15/2008, -2/+3Plus think about how many more police officers there are vs. pilots.
- alittleroy101, on 05/15/2008, -0/+1^^don't know why you are being dugg down, that is a valid point.
- skidooer, on 05/15/2008, -0/+2Living in a rural area, I hear about farm accident deaths far too often. However, those stories never make the news. On the other hand, when a police officer is killed in the line of duty it will be the top story. The media isn't a very good indicator of the frequency of death in a given industry.
- druakara, on 05/15/2008, -0/+3I think it's more likely to be the percentage of those workers who die due to job related accidents.
- Ebulating, on 05/15/2008, -0/+3No, that would be insanely high. The numbers almost certainly mean how much higher the death rate is than the median death rate of either the population or of all occupation, so a cop has a 340% higher risk of death.
It would be interesting to have a list of the SAFEST occupations and how they compare to the median, like office work is 0.02 or something.
- Ebulating, on 05/15/2008, -0/+3No, that would be insanely high. The numbers almost certainly mean how much higher the death rate is than the median death rate of either the population or of all occupation, so a cop has a 340% higher risk of death.

- GreenGrassyNoel, on 05/15/2008, -0/+2Note that most of the pilots who die are bush pilots, ones who fly out into the middle of nowhere and land in a field or a lake.
I'm surprised miners aren't on there, guess you can blame the media sensationalizing mining accidents, or they go unreported. - woofers07, on 05/15/2008, -1/+3So a farmer has a more dangerous job than a cop? Awesome I'm so using that next time I'm in a legal situation(from my side) with a dick cop.

- JustinCase18, on 05/15/2008, -0/+1I read several years ago that "salesmen" had the highest fatality rate. As with truckers, its the law of averages on the road that leads to their deaths. Unfortunately, you won't find that statistic in most articles because it looks like your average fatality. You'd have to research the records of Fleet Lease companies fatalities and let's face it. Joe Salesman died at 10 a.m. during non-rush hour doesn't get the news ratings that a collapsed mine does.

Me: Holy ***** *****, I never thought I would meet someone who had been through that!

Have a nice day - SwedishNinja, on 05/15/2008, -1/+10I know you're trying to troll, but you honestly aren't doing a very good job. I bet the course of action you expect me to take is to either defend Operation Iraqi Freedom or point out that FDR, Truman, LBJ, and Nixon had MUCH higher death tolls in wars during their presidencies, but I'm not going to go there.
2/10 - willaggs, on 05/15/2008, -3/+14I want to preface this by saying that it is a tragedy for every soldier that dies, and that my calculations do not count in the wounded
Over the course of 5 years, approx. 4,000 people have died serving in Iraq. 7,000 people die every day in the united states. If you do the math and equate the two populations, then the death rate for soldiers is ONE TENTH that of everyday americans.
What I am trying to say is that being a soldier is not so dangerous as it is made out to be. It's just played up a lot in the media because there are political connotations. Well over 1 million soldiers have served in Iraq and less than 1% are killed.- rebelcommander, on 05/15/2008, -2/+8Someone failed basic math. First of all, peak troop deployment in Iraq was 160k, assuming that each soldier rotated out once, a conservative estimate would say 320,000 soldiers served in Iraq. If US yearly death rate is 7000, over 5 years that would be 35,000 civilian deaths. So the 5 year US civilian death rate is 35,000 divided by 300,000,000 (US population) or 0.0117%. For US soldiers in Iraq (not counting contractors, etc. the rate is 4000 divided by 320000 or 1.25%. That would mean that a US soldier is 106 times more likely to die than an average US citizen.
- alittleroy101, on 05/15/2008, -1/+3willaggs probably won't even read this, which is sad. I also question the intelligence of the 9 people (so far) that have dugg him up.
- willaggs, on 05/15/2008, -1/+1I question your intelligence considering you haven't even pointed out what is wrong.
- alittleroy101, on 05/15/2008, -0/+1Hmmm, I was replying to rebelcommander. I'm sorry that I grossly overestimated your intelligence. I assumed you would be able to make it through his post, see my post underneath it and a little bit to the right of it, and deduce that I was agreeing with reblel's post. Hence, by showing my agreement, I did not feel the need to retype everything he said, or attempt to hijack his positions. I hope that clears everything up for you.
- Strife880, on 05/15/2008, -0/+2Not saying anything willaggs said is correct, however, he said daily death rate (And at the moment, I am unable to find a death rate more recent than 1993, and at which time it was 8.6 per 1000 (per year) and assuming 300 million population, that would be 2,580,000 per year or 7068.493 per day).
But as with all statistics, it is misleading, how many are from natural causes? diseases? etc.... etc...
But we can almost entirely assume all soldiers that died in Iraq died in combat. So until you actually include all the factors, this is the most ***** thing to actually think about.- willaggs, on 05/15/2008, -0/+13,100 died in iraq in combat. 900 died from drowning, vehicle accidents, etc.
- willaggs, on 05/15/2008, -0/+1No I stand by what I said. US DAILY (not annual) death rate is 7k. Therefore, about 255,000 dead each year (12,775,000 for 5 years).
4,000 soldiers have died in Iraq, and over 1 million have been deployed. I'm not sure where you got that ***** statistic of 320,000 soldiers have served. That doesn't make any sense. Before you start calling out my argument, know some basic facts.
- alittleroy101, on 05/15/2008, -1/+3willaggs probably won't even read this, which is sad. I also question the intelligence of the 9 people (so far) that have dugg him up.
- alittleroy101, on 05/15/2008, -1/+2Who is digging up your retarded math?
- willaggs, on 05/15/2008, -0/+1My math is fine. What do you think is wrong with it?
- rebelcommander, on 05/15/2008, -2/+8Someone failed basic math. First of all, peak troop deployment in Iraq was 160k, assuming that each soldier rotated out once, a conservative estimate would say 320,000 soldiers served in Iraq. - computergod, on 05/15/2008, -1/+1FWIK, it is the ppl from places like backwater that do the real fighting. The US militery is mostly support, and fighting form a distance. I don't know what their causality rate is, but I'm sure it's astronomical compared to the US militery.
- Cajole55, on 05/15/2008, -0/+1so should #1 be......being born????
- ryan926, on 05/15/2008, -2/+22wow. the anti-abortionists killing the doctors to stop the doctors from killing a fetus?
wtf is up with these guys? an eye for an eye i guess.- FeartheKnighted, on 05/15/2008, -1/+5Not that I condone this at all, but I believe their logic is that by killing an abortionist, they are saving many lives because the doctor will perform many abortions.
- Lunarbunny, on 05/15/2008, -3/+5I assume their justification is that killing this one person will save tens or hundreds. Personally I think abortion is none of the pro-lifers' ***** business.
- HonestAbe, on 05/15/2008, -0/+3You have heard that it was said, "An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth". But I say to you, do not resist an evildoer. If anyone strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also.
- logosx1, on 05/15/2008, -1/+1Would you have killed Hitler in the 1930s if you had had the chance?
- computergod, on 05/15/2008, -4/+2Eye for an eye from the bible is actually the opposite form what it is interpreted now. Used to be if a member of your tribe gets killed from a member of another then it was perfectly acceptable to kill ALL of them in revenge. Eye for an eye just meant you should kill just one. You know, the whole peace and love hippy ***** that Jesus was always preaching.

- Klisk, on 05/15/2008, -3/+2I'm not sure.. Last I read about it, modern-day Chernobyl is no longer a dangerous place to be at all. People are just terrified because of the former risk and now stigma involved in it, even though the radiation has for the most part passed.

- Gforce20, on 05/15/2008, -1/+6Digg already broke their database. Apparently website management is pretty high up on their list.
- dylster13, on 05/15/2008, -3/+4121 diggs and already down?!?
- radsprack, on 05/15/2008, -0/+2Are you really surprised? Once something goes up on the front page everyone clicks. If they are a smart digger they try to read the article before digging. So you have no clue whether or not the bandwidth can withstand what we here call "The Digg Effect." It's only after everybody has left the site that the diggs will, most likely, go up. But only after people have gotten to the site and back.
- danomagnum, on 05/15/2008, -0/+6I swear to god, digg should put at the very top of the page: "Diggs =/= Views"

- usgovterrorists, on 05/15/2008, -20/+9Being a soldier for the terrorist United States Government can kill you!
If being a soldier doesn't kill you, it can maim you for life.
Depleted Uranium is WMD! Tell the soldier the truth about Depleted Uranium, and the soldier won't go to war. It's too bad the soldier doesn't know, Depleted Uranium kills, and the soldier is expendable. 350 tons used in the first Gulf War, and the current Iraq war has expended an estimated 5 times more tonnage of DU than was used in the first Gulf War. The U.S. has used more depleted uranium since 1991 than the atomicity equivalent of 400,000 Nagasaki bombs. Since 1943 the military has been aware of the extreme toxicity of uranium as a gas. Of the veterans who served in Desert Shield and Desert Storm, more than 300,000 have sought VA healthcare, and more than 200,000 have filed VA disability claims. 518,000 Gulf-era vets in 2004 are now on medical disability. Four reasons why using depleted uranium weapons violates the UN Convention on Human Rights: LEGALITY TEST FOR WEAPONS UNDER INTERNATIONAL LAW Four reasons why using depleted uranium weapons violates the UN Convention on Human Rights: TEMPORAL TEST – Weapons must not continue to act after the battle is over. ENVIRONMENTAL TEST – Weapons must not be unduly harmful to the environment. TERRITORIAL TEST – Weapons must not act off of the battlefield. HUMANENESS TEST – Weapons must not kill or wound inhumanly. BTW: 9-11 Was An Inside Job!- ifire, on 05/15/2008, -1/+6Your last line ruined all credibility you may have had.
- usgovterrorists, on 05/15/2008, -8/+2"Photos of the steel, evidence about how the buildings collapsed, the unexplainable collapse of WTC 7, evidence of thermite in the debris as well as several other red flags, are quite troubling indications of well planned and controlled demolition"
"Why would all 110 stories drop straight down to the ground in about 10 seconds, pulverizing the contents into dust and ash - twice. Why would all 47 stories of WTC 7 fall straight down to the ground in about seven seconds the same day? It was not struck by any aircraft or engulfed in any fire. An independent investigation is justified for all three collapses including the surviving steel samples and the composition of the dust."
"WTC 7 Building could not have collapsed as a result of internal fire and external debris. NO plane hit this building. This is the only case of a steel frame building collapsing through fire in the world. The fire on this building was small & localized therefore what is the cause?"
"In my view, the chances of the three buildings collapsing symmetrically into their own footprint, at freefall speed, by any other means than by controlled demolition, are so remote that there is no other plausible explanation!"

- diggmeyoubitch, on 05/15/2008, -0/+1I guess you could argue that a bullet to the head is humane because the person felt no pain, but what's the humane way of wounding someone? Do you have to cut someone with a disinfected knife in a clean environment after providing local anesthesia and then promptly stitch them up?
- ouzome, on 05/15/2008, -0/+0yup, I was trying to keeping an open mind until the last line. Sorry 'bout your craziness!

Unless you rather get shot at, end up homeless or have any more urges to kill yourself, rip up your ***** ***** military contract now. The US government and military don't give a flying F about you. They have no problem sending you into an obvious suicide mission. You can get out for your mom now, and live, or you can keep on plugging away at it and play the Russian Roulette probabilities over and over, but eventually you're going to catch a bullet. I'm not going to give an F about you if you do, my neighbor's not, the man on the street is not, and the VAH isn't going to do a hell of a lot for you.
You're just going to be another cripple in a wheelchair on the sideline of life, GAME OVER. For what? A ***** medal? You find that crap at gunshows, tons of them, for a couple of dollars, they are worthless ribbon and metal trinkets.
Somebody comes up to me and tells me they deserted, I'm like, holy ***** *****, you are the bravest ***** I know... and someone who got some sense.... finally. Someone sticking in taking the crap and slaving away because they are afraid of the ***** above them yelling at them... no... I have no respect for them... just another spineless peon in the military... and its full of those enlisted jokers.- ouzome, on 05/15/2008, -0/+8Man, I can kinda see what you're saying...but calling the military spineless peons and jokes and you have no respect for them, come on now. ALL of them voluntarily signed up for the military, and believe it or not, there are many soldiers who want to go back to Iraq again and again. They are fighting for their country, whether you believe in the mission or not. For you to show them that kind of disrespect and name calling is not cool. The fact that you currently have +1 digg is sad for digg.com and the majority of it's liberal American hating users.
- Naturalistic, on 05/15/2008, -2/+3If there was no volunteers for the military then they would just draft people like you lielly you ***** imbecile.
- kroni, on 05/15/2008, -2/+1the thing is, the only people that respect USA military are rednecks from USA. The rest of the world is tired of looking how USA wages war all across the world. Your military ain't better than the "terrorists" (that are defending their invaded country). Yankees, go home. Like you did in Vietnam. Go home, and stay there, remove all your mercenaries from all over the ***** world. When others kill people is called racism (WW2), genocide (WW2), terrorism, etc. but when USA does genocides is a great action. *****. Putos yankis mueranse
- ouzome, on 05/16/2008, -0/+0You guys are ***** racist - the only people that respect USA military are rednecks? Twisted, racist, hateful view on the country that has helped more countries than any other in the ***** world.
- active1x0, on 05/15/2008, -0/+1I don't really know why I bother to respond to crap like this. Maybe I hope you will listen and better your own life because of it. But - a lot of people enlist, myself included, for numerous reasons. Not all of us want to go out and kill people. But we're prepared to do so. I can also tell you that I personally know quite a few NCO's and Officers alike who have sent men into combat and watched only some of them come back alive. They do not take it lightly whatsoever. Many of them are never the same, and spend the rest of their lives in regret, blaming themselves and trying to cope with the loss of friends and fellow soldiers.
All of us die sometime, some before we really even get a chance to appreciate life. I imagine you really don't grasp the gravity of the gift you were given - your life - and why you should make use of it while you can. Those of us in the military spend our lives ready to die for something or someone, instead of living for nothing or no one.
I suggest you lay off the drugs, disconnect your internet, go outside, and do something worthwhile. Living on the Internet thinking you're better, or even smarter, than those in the military is a really, really low life to lead. I pity you for having no idea what it's like to live and stand for something greater than yourself.
Buried.- ouzome, on 05/16/2008, -0/+1Thank you for your service and great words.
- ouzome, on 05/15/2008, -0/+8Man, I can kinda see what you're saying...but calling the military spineless peons and jokes and you have no respect for them, come on now.

This list is kind of disapointing, although there seem to be many threats not that many doctors have died. So the WILL kill you is kind of over stated.- psykiv, on 05/15/2008, -1/+4#4 - Head of Anti-Mafia Taskforce, Sicily

- passedoutghost, on 05/15/2008, -0/+0Actually I've been doing a course on terrorism and the statistics for the deaths of abortion doctors were surprisingly low, the attacks however numbered in the hundreds. No doubt might will get you killed, but I don't think it's as risky as being a suicide bomber. [I haven't read the article btw]
