When they're 3, give them a puppy. Let them keep the puppy till they're about 6, then take them out in the yard and shoot it. They'll have a healthy respect for guns and will know exactly what they're capable of. You can bet they'll never take one to school.

I was strictly supervised the whole time and he emphasized safe handling. Never point it at anything you aren't willing to shoot, pay attention to where the bullet will go if you miss and keep your finger off the trigger until you're ready to shoot. The only loaded one he kept around the house was a 12 ga pump shotgun. He let me shoot it when I was 7. Stoked with full up 3 1/2" magnum loads. I wanted nothing else to do with that thing until well after I turned 10!

Too many parents are afraid of their children knowing they have a gun and getting hurt or hurting someone else with it, so they never tell their child about it.

Depends. I know what you are thinking, but think about if that were a law.
Teenager robs house. Handgun is not kept in gun safe. Teenager steals gun. Teenager shoots two people for drug money. Man whose house was robbed gets in trouble for not having handgun locked up. A locked up handgun does nothing for self-defense or deterrence, making it useless.
I think there should be evidence that someone's gross negligence were the reason someone (like this child) got a hold of a gun in the first place.
In this case, I think the gun owner should be investigated, and hopefully charges brought up. - InfernoX, on 04/29/2009, -0/+3Unfortunately I disagree with that analogy but I agree with the sentiment. People who aren't already predisposed to it won't pick up a random kid and sexually abuse them. People have been known to commit second degree murder on the other hand.
