Wow is cheaper then a 12 pack of good beer, or a carton of smokes, it doesn't require any sort of planning like a party or a date, and can be compared to a large scale chat room with little achievements and multiplayer games...
The source of this online "addiction" is free time and free money, as well as a disproportionate ratio of time needed to effort required. I found out how easy wow is to quit when I quit my job to do school full time. I think I have logged on 3 times in the last 2 months, just to say goodbye to my friends (my guild was super cool) before the expansion pack hits and they all shoot to 80. Once you let all your auctions go null, and lose all your gold, and know that even if you went and got it back, it would be for nothing, because you aren't buying the next expansion pack, it's pretty impossible to get back into.
Just my 2 cents.

I tire of the game after reaching level 20 from grinding (and yeah, I know there's not much grinding involved to get to 20). At least open ended games has one main quest you can beat. MMOs are just a bunch of side quests and it eats up a lot of time.
As for the addiction, the slow and peaceful method is to slowly decrease the time played on WoW and fill that extra time with something else. My friend, who was addicted to WoW, played another game to slowly get rid of his addiction. The violent method would be to put him into a straitjacket and force him to be without WoW. If English isn't the author's native language maybe she should run it through babelfish or something.

If you go out with your friends irl WoW will still be there when you get back.
If you go to college or work a job, WoW will still be there when you're available.
If you spend all your time trying to be the best or win a MMO you fail. Even if you garner respect and reputation it's in an online game and almost all of your fanbase are mentally challenged.
If you can manage to be casual and just use WoW instead of playing 100 different games everytime a new console release comes out and have fun doing it you can actually have a life and play WoW.
