- abddoc, on 03/19/2009, -1/+27Really awesome work. I actually live in Dubai and its more impressive in person.
And to all of you who are amazed at Dubai, here's a heads up. Dubai is like fake gold. Shiny on the outside, hard rock on the inside. The media is Government controlled, therefore you all probably don't know how bad the state of Dubai is right now. People are basically driving to the airport, leaving their cars there, and flying off to other countries. Its estimated that the government is finding around 500+ new cars EVERY DAY being left because no one wants to stay here anymore. The reason I know this? Because so many of my friends have lost their jobs or are just fed up with the lack of human rights here that they take loans and then just leave.
All these high rise apartments you see are mostly deserted. I went for a late night ride the other day to the new high rise apartments area, and it felt like I was in the movie 'I Am Legend'.
In fact Dubai is so broke right now that the airlines Emirates is being sold off. The real estate market/company (yup, you guessed it, Government owned) is in such a hole that its being sold off too. The tallest building being built here is on a hold too. In fact everything is on hold.
Dubai isn't all that amazing as its portrayed to be. You guys should know this from your experiences with FOX. The media is manipulated and it shows the West the things it wants to so that you all come and invest your time and money here. Its fake gold. - sketchstudios, on 03/19/2009, -0/+8Really awesome work by Patrick Hughes. He was born in London in 1939. His contemporary work has been shown in many galleries around the world. His wiki here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patrick_Hughes_(artis ...

Contemporary art, yay! - ChromaVita, on 03/19/2009, -1/+7Once you break down the effect and see what's really going on it's hard to go back to seeing the original illusion.
- lewystud, on 03/19/2009, -2/+7everything I see about Dubai just makes me want to visit more
- StiGUP, on 03/19/2009, -0/+4Yes Dubai is a wonderful place from what I hear...although everything seems overly expensive. I bet that video does nothing compared to looking at that art in person.
- Gruul, on 03/19/2009, -0/+4It needs more 3D-Girls.

- cassaffousth, on 03/19/2009, -0/+33-D art used to be called "sculpture".
Do you remember Michelangelo? - kevinsboy, on 03/19/2009, -1/+3In the first shot there is a shark in a tank, the shark is a real piece of art in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, its this giant rotting putrid shark suspended by wires in a glass and steel tank.
http://tinyurl.com/8bw777 - SolituSneiku, on 03/19/2009, -5/+7Yes visiting the Middle East right now sounds like a swell idea
- jitterbits, on 03/20/2009, -0/+2lol, did you miss the part where media is highly controlled by the government? What do you think the government's going to do? Send out a press release on how badly Dubai sucks?
- abddoc, on 03/19/2009, -0/+2Well the Government reports about 600/month, but once again, the media is filtered via the Government first. The cleaning staff at my office works part-time at the airport as a 'taxi-usherer' and he was telling me that he sees at least a 100 cars being towed away every night during his 4 hour shift.
Rent works differently here. At least for most of the places. Its charged annually, not monthly. So basically the landlord sets an annual rent, and you usually pay a quarter of the years rent at a time. I stay in a 1 bedroom apartment, and my rent works out to about $15,000 USD a year. Its pretty expensive as water, electricity, cable, internet, telephone (ALL of which are Government owned and run) are extra. Not to mention parking in residential areas isn't free either. God, we all love residential pay parking don't we.
The lay-offs and the recession is probably the same as it is everywhere else in the world. But you must realize that Dubai has grown relatively quickly in the past 6-7 years only. Therefore the faster and the higher you climb, the faster you fall. - woofers07, on 03/19/2009, -1/+3Couldn't shoot it with a steady-cam? really?
- centran, on 03/19/2009, -0/+2link post fail!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zIZcl8q0u4Q - robosexy, on 03/19/2009, -2/+4Thank you for that. I sensed that when I visited the airport. Great looking place, but something about it was off, kind of like Vegas, very superficial.
I really liked your analogy: fake gold. - Johnnyhorse, on 03/19/2009, -0/+2And it's made by arguably the most important (hate him or love him) artist in the world right now, Damien Hirst. Usually you hear about the artist before the work when it comes to him.

- ucccft, on 03/19/2009, -1/+1The earliest confirmed 3-D film shown to a paying audience was The Power of Love, which premiered at the Ambassador Hotel Theater in Los Angeles on September 27, 1922.
- ambiguus, on 03/19/2009, -1/+1Taking pyramids, and projecting them in to hallways; reminds me of the paper dragon illusion in reverse (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zIZcl8q0u4Q).
- Steverrific, on 03/19/2009, -1/+1Pretty sure the Ghost busts in the Haunted Mansions at Disney use the same technique, too.
- Thud, on 03/19/2009, -1/+1I was going to say "meh, it's been done."
But then I realized that this was the guy that did it first. - dlite922, on 03/20/2009, -1/+1that's their intention
- RioDJNarrow, on 03/20/2009, -2/+1Just don't have sex out of wedlock there because you will be thrown in jail.
- inactive, on 03/19/2009, -2/+1Ugh... put the camera on a rolling tripod or something. I'm nauseous.
- Fletchnuts, on 03/19/2009, -2/+1It puts the lotion on my skin.
- LiquidIse, on 03/19/2009, -3/+1Nothing really impressive here...
Especially by Dubai's standards - OMGIAMTHEMAN, on 03/19/2009, -2/+0http://www.boingboing.net/2009/02/09/dubai-airport ...
not quite 500 cars a day, more like 500 / month, but yeah, immigrant workers in dubai who get laid off also lose their visas (kind of like immigrants in the united states) so their choices are live illegally or go back to where they came from.
I keep reading comments like yours, but I haven't seen any news that indicates their recession or rates of unemployment / lay-offs are any worse than ours. - Kasatka, on 03/19/2009, -4/+1***** YAWN. cool gimmick for about 4 seconds.
