- nsharp, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1936. Write something about the iphone/apple
37. Write "Top 10 (anything)"
38. Title includes HDR
39. Title includes Steven Colbert (actually, I'd digg that) - kcpwnsgman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12I still do everything on the list, and I don't get stories on the front page.
Must mean that my stories suck. - koregaonpark, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14I haven't consciously used a single one. :-)
"1. Make your title say it all" - Hehe. titlesaysitall says make your title say it all. - Suits, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9"Steven Colberts' Top 10 favorite HDR photos of the Iphone with guests, Steve Jobs and Kevin Rose."
Boom! Front page! :p - rafiss, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6"15. Use good grammar – Avoid the use of Caps Lock, too many explanation points and always use the built in spell checker."
I laughed. - titlesaysitall, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Thanks, I tried focusing on giving tips for others to promote themselves (without using anything against Digg's Terms Of Use) because even if you have a great story and are the first to submit it, you can be overshadowed by someone who is ranked higher or more well known.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Are you missing the u key on your keyboard? It's spelled "*****".
- vudicarus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5That's a genuinely great list and covers a wide gamut. Other "how to get to the front page" stories tend to fall into speculation of how diggers may/may not behave.
- vudicarus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4"Are you missing the u key on your keyboard? It's spelled "*****"."
he's ancient roman - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7Great and comprehensive article- it's a great glimpse into the day-to-day workings of a top Digg user(which you obviously are, due in part to some of those tips, even unconsciously).
I want to contribute a few more tips in a similar vein that are a bit more...sneaky, that I HAVE used with great success:
http://neomeme.wordpress.com/2007/01/17/dirty-tricks-to-get-dugg/
Of course a lot of them overlap.
If you don't believe they work, look at my profile. Ten days ago, when I wrote that post, I had 3 front page stories. Now I have 13. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Of course. Anyone who befriends me, I befriend them right back(hint hint).
- bergur1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Yeah digggamer you...I noticed your name in my friendslist and when I notice you on the front page all I could think to myself was that he must have befriended everyone he saw so that way he could get more exposure. I should befriend people more often.
- nsharp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3and the biggest tip?
don't get buried
25% of digg front page submissions are buried.
don't believe me? see this:
http://www.nsharp.org/forum/viewtopic.php?p=20 - rlh1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Just say that you vote Republican,
That will always get you dugg up. - jlove5, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3You have to love #6. "Digg has a great search function".... Yeah, it's great if it works. I can't ever get it to work!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yeah, if you keep spelling "grammar" wrong, you probably will be banned.
- undersky, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2OMG the weirdest tribe EVER, literally populated by naked girls! (PIC)
- Pudifoot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Never be biased
i love that. everyone just just avoid talking about anything that might offend someone else. I am sure the Neutrals from Neutropolis would agree.
If I die, tell my wife "hello" - ostracize, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This is all just common sense. Any digger who doesn't follow these rules shouldn't even be here. Should be like a prerequisite.
Dugg for raising awareness. - blueigloo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2According to http://www.digg.com/about,
"Digg is a user driven social content website".
Sorry not a place to tag and bookmark things... (I.E. digging crap thats down and not mirrored) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Once this story hits the front page, you're going to get pwned by groupthink. Because your comment already has negative votes, many diggers will automatically digg it down further. Just watch...
- MadMan459, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's not always just about groupthink though. I'm what you can call a "Mac Fanboy" (Was a moderator at the MacAddict forums for over 5 years) but have not dugg or even buried Mac-related stories if I find them to be overly-biased or inaccurate.
I dugg this comment down because it is exceedingly negative, humorless and generally abusive. Wouldn't matter to me if he had + or - 100 diggs, I vote with my conscience.
I find when I'm visiting other forums (like the Cubs forum on MLB.com), I'm wishing they had those little green and red buttons too. - TubaTechno, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is the most contradicting list I've ever seen.
8. Cater to Digg’s audience – A vast majority of Digg is Technology/Science Enthusiasts, Gamers, Modders and Apple Junkies. By targeting these people with relative content improves your exposure garnering more Diggs.
9. Never be biased – With endless debates ranging from Apple to Bush joining one side can hurt your credibility. When submitting be fair and neutral keeping a steady flow of variety.
By the hundreds of articles I've seen make the front, a lot of them cater to the audience by being bias. Most of the World and Business news cater to the liberal left by having ultra left wing articles submitted. Its ridiculous. - MadMan459, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@titlesaysitall - which brings up another point... it seems a quick way to get dugg down in the comments section is to pop in and complain "I posted this story first!!!" I guess another guideline would be that if you get beat out like that, simply deal with it and move on.
- Neo189, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1#36 - Don't be anicejew
- PaulOwen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Tip number 36:
"Become friends with the unofficial editors of Digg. If you don't know who they are, well that's too bad. By the way did you know that Digg is a user driven site? No really, it is. Yes it is." - nsharp, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3diggamer. pls be my friend :) :)
- infimprob, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3"don't be biased"
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1My gut tells me... maybe.
- MadMan459, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I only have 2 friends on my list, and diggamer is one of them. :-) (*sniff* thanks man *sniff*)
I like to spend time on digg, but most of the time when I do try to submit a story, it's already been submitted. I've only submitted three stories, but have had one get to the front page. I'm pretty content to just digg stories, make comments (and engage in some discussions), but I just don't have the time to make a huge effort to submit stories. I'll keep trying here and there though, maybe I'll get lucky again. When I do, I'll be sure to keep these tips in mind.
And yeah, if anyone likes my digg history and wants to befriend me, I'll return the favor. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1So True:
1. Be a Machead
2. Love Stephen Colbert (In a homosexual way)
3. Run Firefox
4. Be a Democrat
5. Love Google
6. Curse enough to seem opinionated, but not so much that the message is buried (haha pun) beneath the cursing
7. Be a Wii fanboy - vudicarus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1but even if your front page story gets buried, it still counts in your profile.
- sicc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Actually, I think the whole top 10 list idea is dead. It doesn't work very well anymore.
= - kcpwnsgman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1@capekid:
title sucks - gback2000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0A perfect Digg headline would be: On his way to Walmart to buy an evil Microsoft product Dick Cheney smirks at the "Mom and Pop" stores that he hopes will go under.
- CapeKid, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I tried that, didn't work:
http://digg.com/offbeat_news/The_Perfect_Digg_Story_It_can_t_fail - steepdecline, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0very very good point..
my little video clip about dig got 200+ in the last 2 days
and was even dugg by Kevin 'cameltoes' Rose himself
yet never got front page love...
why is that you think?
here's the proof...http://bigbignews.net/2007/01/special-report-digg-this.html - orientis, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1@titlesaysitall "By spamming, trolling or Digging blindly prompts users to block you and having your account getting banned."
This sentence is one of the worst I've ever seen. Especially considering your tip 15. Your grammar is terrible! Your ideas, however, are sound. - vikinghammer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Not only will that probably not work, it will definitely get you banned. But if you want to try it, I suppose I don't have the power to stop you.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0...and the #1 tip on how to promote yourself.... make sure your digg name isn't Schestowitz *dgg dgg, tshhht*
- flair1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Here are other ideas.
1) Set up 30 user names and have them all Digg your story even though it is a dupe and not that good.
2) Get 10 friends to do the same with their user names
You are on the front page. - vikinghammer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I have no strong feelings one way or the other!
- silylady, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Very interesting, although a few of them are pretty much common sense.
- Universal, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2This is a little off topic...
titlesaysitall:
I just noticed your blog "Tech Blot" has the same name as a blog I used to have called "TechBlot" which I made way back in 2004 (I don't use it anymore).
Awesome! - drjekelmrhyde, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Fvck that eveyone on here know if you're PRO-Mac, Wii, Google, Kevin Rose, and Linux you go right to the front page
you people might digg me down but its the fvcking truth - drjekelmrhyde, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1If I swear on here I might get banned say the politically correct /grammer-nazis Gods on digg
- ldavid, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2^^ lame
- shadowstorm, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0way to kill a joke.
- drjekelmrhyde, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1@zerocomm
Exactly but man dont you know the truth hurt people on Digg - Lososaurus, on 10/12/2007, -8/+240. Become a Mac fanboy
