Every list summed up. - kent1146, on 10/11/2007, -0/+14Because companies make money by leveraging an inequity of resource (ie, knowledge, capability, access) over their customers. A "Confessions of..." piece attempts to neutralize the advantage of information inequity, and that benefits the consumer. I don't know about you, but I like to have as much knowledge as I can reasonably have before entering into a financial transaction.
- bittermang, on 10/11/2007, -7/+20Also, did you know...
Dell's use Volume License Keys, special Windows discs with answer files, and a preinstalled activation file.
What does all this mean? It means I can take a Dell Windows XP CD (Home or Pro) and install it on any Dell (the requirement seems to be the motherboard, from my experience), and I'm done. No entering the key from the side of the case. No activation. Done. Quick and painless. And you know, this is really handy because hardly anyone seems to know where their discs are, and there was a period where Dell wasn't sending the "Recovery" discs at all. I think they stopped because they know people figured out the trick.
Chalk that up for One confession of a small town PC tech. - Klowner, on 10/11/2007, -0/+12holy crap nostoppingus, he's like.. half 16 and half 61
- NoStoppingUs, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8way off topic, but have you ever seen the CEO of Abercrombie and Fitch? hes like a real life ken doll, except..not so..realistic..
like whoa
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Mikejeffriesceo.jpg - stev, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5I don't get this part. I work for tech support for Dell and if a customer needs their hard drive replaced and does not have their OS cd, we're required to send it with the hard drive. If you call in just to say that you want a windows xp cd and you're still in warranty and xp was purchased with your system - you're getting an xp cd.
- GawtMilk, on 10/11/2007, -2/+7If you think Michael Dell is ugly, you've got issues. He's just an average guy. He's not "ugly"...but I don't see why you care about the visual appeal of CEOs.
- meatmcguffin, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4A company hires someone to act like a normal shopper, but they're secretly a double agent and report what kind of service they receive back to the company for staff evaluation.
- seanc6610, on 10/11/2007, -3/+6I came to this thread to say the exact same thing, you beat me to it. It's really getting tiring reading all of these "confessions" about things that I'll probably never remember when I buy my next product from Dell / Best Buy / Circuit City / wherever the next confessional comes from.
With a quick Google search for the definition of "confession," I got "an admission of misdeeds or faults." Where are the misdeeds and faults? - MikeSobe, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3I work at a Dell kiosk.... refuse to lose is no longer available and in fact has been gone for some time now.
- Klowner, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3is lol the new period? And can your uncle summon laptops from the ether?
- whiskeysquared, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Where's Brad Burns with his input about Dell?
- tdawson2012, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I do the same, but for my notebook I went to Dell and I couldn't be happier with it. I did look at HP and their operation was pretty sub standard to Dell's, not to mention less options and more money. This was of course almost a year ago so I suppose things may have changed.
- sdcarter, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I also used to work one. This is definitely true. Also, don't take your laptop to the kiosks for repair. The reps aren't even allowed to touch your systems. As for what legendxx says, digg him down all you want; but he's right... to an extent. Dells offer the customization options and the XPS line is pretty good, depending on what you're doing. But if you know anything about computers you're better off just building your own... unless you want a warranty.
The warranties are totally worth it on the laptops and I wouldn't recommend anything lower than 3 years. There's just no point to getting anything lower. It's a different story with desktops. Make sure you get the customer-care/warranties if you have morons in your house. If you aren't "blessed" with the technology impaired then don't bother.
The only time the DPA is worth it is when things are interest free. And if the rep doesn't tell you, you should know that if you haven't paid off the entire balance of what you're buying interest free you will be charged full interest for the whole time you had. (TV interest free for 12mos. = 12mos. of interest at 29.99% charged to you all at once) - Catchpen, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I assumed Dell would have much higher ratings with their customers. I looked them up after they sold me a GPU that was out of stock and not available for 2 more months.
http://www.resellerratings.com/seller_rating_history.pl?id=1867 - Anidzuki, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1It's called WPA, on all retail computers as long as your have the right mobo, you can install your WPA Windows XP on any PC, regardless of brand.
- eddieo, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3When I read the heading I bet to myself that it was from the consumerist. Well what do ya know, I was right. I mean, what are the odds that this story (or any other one like it) would appear anywhere else.
- mgainor, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3Why the hell do people ever think we care about their previous lives in ***** retail jobs?
- Dumbledorito, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2You can get some pretty good deals from the Dell outlet (ordered but then not picked up, scratch & dent, refurb). 710s are looking like a decent alternative to building it completely, and I can add on whatever is missing.
- ThePict, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2@nostoppingus
Now that's ugly! - thpntofsngUlrty, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Joy! Another confession for us to read!
- evanrousso, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1The thing I hate about the consumerist is that they seem less concerned about consumer empowerment and more concerned with eeevvviiilll companies that *gasp* turn a profit. You notice they always go after the same companies with dubious stories about "that one time when one customer out of millions had a bad experience returning their xbox, which they themselves broke, and the eevvviill Best Buy employees refused and threw them into a snake pit."
- aserer511, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1that's pretty cool, dell dealer with some haggling....
- kd1s, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1His thing about laptop warranties is *****. I've got an Inspiron 4100 that's going on five years old and it still works. I've had to replace the power supply because of a stupid connector design, but other than that it's been good.
And there are two XPS M140's in the family. Mine has no warranty coverage because I couldn't see the point. I know how to take apart a laptop and replace a keyboard, motherboard, etc. if need be. I also know where to get the parts inexpensively if need be, since I have a very good relationship with Dell. But for the SO, I got the two year because I don't want to deal with it.
I'm going into my second year on mine and the only complaint I have is that the letters on the keyboard are mostly worn off. No biggie really. I have had to tighten the display panel hinges on the SO's laptop though. - Richardpa, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1thought you would be interested in the Dell response here:

- themoose, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1It doesn't even need to be a dell; I've put it on a custom built PC without activation or anything like that.

what's going on here? is digg editing our posts? - deasterly, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0Tightening the screws on the bottom of pretty much ANY notebook is just routine maintenance, no different than regular oil changes or rotating and balancing the tires on your car. And I couldn't agree more about the durability of their notebooks! I've got an old Inspiron 4000 and an Inspiron 8200 that both still chug along without a problem in the world. The old 4000 finally had a hard drive give up the ghost after many years of faithful service. Replacement 2.5" 40GB drive was less than an evening out on the town, too! Most of my keyboard letters are worn off, too, but that's just normal wear and tear for someone who types as much as I do. :)

"Apparently we're all confessing to things now." - lsatkins, on 10/11/2007, -4/+2"For over a year now, Dell has required you to purchase your Backup/Reinstall Disk. Order this with your machine. Once your Dell is delivered, it is a pain to get the disk at all, much less at a sensible price. If you do not have this disk and your hard drive dies, at home warranty repair will not be able to get your PC running once the drive is swapped without selling you a new copy of your OS."
So does that mean Dell doesn't give you a copy of the OS that is installed on your machine when you buy it? - flessa, on 10/11/2007, -11/+8Dell is hurting. HP is much more profitable right now. However, I just build my own PCs. Tech support? Your looking at him.
- compgeek, on 10/11/2007, -5/+1never bought a boxed pc never will build em all myself. same for friends and family me and my uncle are tech support lol
- thebe0wulf, on 10/11/2007, -5/+0In my opinion...Hp is only really beating dell because all of the public schools (atleast where I live) are cluttered with Compaqs and Hp's.
