- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -8/+96"The sky is beautiful and blue and what I want is to enjoy the sun," said Manuel Uribe, who had once been certified by doctors as weighing 1,235 pounds. Though still unable to leave his bed, Uribe has lost 395 pounds since he began a high-protein diet a year ago. He now weights about 840 pounds...He drew worldwide attention when he pleaded for help on national television in January 2006. Afterward, an Italian and a Spanish doctor both visited and offered gastric bypass surgery. But Uribe chose to accept help from Mexican nutritionists working with the Zone diet. He says he will stick to that diet until he reaches his goal of 265 pounds."
While I can't imagine what the hell he did to get upt to 1235 lb. this guy definitely deserves a lot of respect for manning up and losing weight the right way instead of taking the easy surgical way out. Talk about discipline. If only more people would follow his lead and follow and practice a little discipline in their diet (maybe add in a little exercise, but at the very least eat more healthy food) there wouldn't be an "obesity epidemic" spreading across the world. - tkstock, on 10/12/2007, -2/+53Actually, DDR2 might be faster...
- raynar, on 10/12/2007, -3/+50At what point do you sit there and say "*****. I'm fat!"
- bebop717, on 10/12/2007, -0/+38Bart: " I wash myself with a rag on a stick"
- retral, on 10/12/2007, -13/+51See, kids? This, is what WoW does to you!
- Urusai, on 10/12/2007, -1/+36Once you lose sight of your genitalia I think you should consider maybe cutting down on the pork rinds.
- fooboarder, on 10/12/2007, -2/+37"obesity epidemic" = having to weigh 1235 lbs. to start having discipline in your diet.
- norle, on 10/12/2007, -2/+35"Most people have their body composition by default."
Nobody weighs half-a-ton by default. Mother nature may be a cruel bitch, but the Cheetos certainly help. - transeunte, on 10/12/2007, -2/+32BRING ME SOLO AND THE WOOKIE
- j37hr0, on 10/12/2007, -4/+33I disagree with the genetics made me _______ excuse. If you consume more calories than you burn you will gain weight. Genetics isn't responsible for you being fat, alcoholic, drug addict, gambling addict, whatever your problem is. Quit blaming DNA. You are who you choose to be. Burn more calories than you consume, it's a choice.
- vofuse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+26And I feel miserable being 25 pounds overweight.
- aantix, on 10/12/2007, -12/+34It always cracks me up that my skinny friends suggest "just eat less" as they eat a bag of Cheetos playing XBox.
Most people have their body composition by default.
The skinnies look down on the fatties as if they have really done something to obtain their body shape knowing damn well 80% of the populace doesn't exercise regularly.
If you have a normal body, you got genetically lucky, but don't hold yourself above others as if you've worked your ass off for your body type.
Most of you guys are just as lazy as the fat people, Mother Nature just happen to cut you a break. - auxplage, on 10/12/2007, -5/+26That really is commendable. I am impressed that someone has the discipline to lose around 1000 pounds just by dieting (and most likely exercising). It says a lot for most of society who when only needing to lose 50lbs decide to get surgery.
- andycr512, on 10/12/2007, -1/+22doctorsax:
Simple. With more ram, he caches to stomach less. - drmangrum, on 10/12/2007, -2/+21It's nice to see him drop the weight, and do it the right way so it actually lasts. However, how damn big do you have to get before you realize this? I'm sure nearly every Digg user knows how 15-20 pounds sneak up on them, but a 1000?
- DisposableRob, on 10/12/2007, -2/+20We'll see how much discipline he has when he is light enough to stand up and get his own food.
- auxplage, on 10/12/2007, -5/+21@joey
The easy way out is not wrong. This guy if anyone should have surgery IF he wanted it.
I am impressed with his discipline. - Desslok, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18They make it sound like everyone was happy he lost weight. In reality, they came out to see the local freak.
- Ahnteis, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16>>Actually, DDR2 might be faster...
Yeah, but the latency might get in the way. =( - BlkGuyAtThePrty, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17Agreed. I was expecting to read that he had the short-cut surgery, but I'm impressed to find hes taking the hard road. I wonder; how well would this man do on the Wii Workout Plan?
- atbnet, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16It just amazes me that people can get this big. You'd think at a quarter of a ton this person might have said, OH ***** I WEIGH 500 POUNDS MAYBE I SHOULD LAY OFF THE FOOD! It's not like it's a big ***** surprise when you get on the scale and it says you're huge. You can't just say "How the hell did that happen?"
I'm not the picture of perfect weight, but come on now this is just ridiculous. - ketsugi, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16I've eaten goat and lamb, but never ram...
- ronaldst, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16He must have been depressed like no other.
- joeyjojo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15Very true.
And, honestly 'eating less' isn't the solution.
'eating less processed foods' is the solution. Nothing wrong with grazing all day on healthy stuff.
The problem is that american society is full of unhealthy food. The affordable, readily available, easy-to-store foods out there are NOT the healthy ones.
Perhaps if our government stopped subsidizing dairy, corn syrup and sugar and put those subsidies into veggies and fruits, we might all be better off. - benitojuarez, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16That woman has huge *****.
What?
Oh, sorry the pink shirt threw me off. - CalipsoII, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14Seriously, the only ones with time to eat on raid nights are the AFK hunters, amirite
- drmangrum, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13I'd think i would rather have the 1200 pounds than have Richard Simmons intervene.
- kludwick, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15In Soviet Russia, fork lifts you!
- codesuidae, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14I don't know if he was depressed, but his bed surely was.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13@auxplage
Yeah, I'm sure it takes a substantial amount of discipline to gain that much weight. - BigPapi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Everyone's natural metabolism is different, but this guy obviously ate too much damn food!
I remember watching a show on TLC about heavy people and there was one guy who was so large that they had to knock down a wall in his house just to get him out. He said he'd eat 15 pork chops for lunch on a typical day. 15! You can't blame genetics if you eat 10 times more food than a normal person. - longboarder543, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12Wow, it'd take a level 3 agent in Crackdown to pick up this guy.
- fxspec06, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12"With dozens of reporters and photographers in tow, Uribe traveled along, passing the town's plaza and church and waving at clusters of people eager to get a glimpse of him."
How could you not get a glimpse of him? - atbnet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10I suppose we should all strive to become an enormous blob of fat just so we can lose it all and brag about losing it.
- markusfarkus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9I hope he keeps it up and loses all that weight. I'd love to hear him in future conversations about dieting...
"Check it out. I've lost 20 pounds in the past 6 months!"
"Oh yeah, well I lost a thousand. Talk to me when you lose a thousand." - shosterman, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11"Sir, you can't park your van here"
- Pilot85, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9"oocha biichii nipple pinchee, ohh ohh ohh..."
- Desslok, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12"Uribe said he plans to start a foundation to help overweight people get medical assistance and teach them about healthy eating habits."
Yes, because I trust the words of a guy who let himself explode up to 1,235 pounds. - tkstock, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9@raynar
Hell, I do that now and I'm only 200lbs! :)
Kudos to the guy for getting the will to do this... I think that's the hardest part sometimes! - StrawberryFrog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8If he can't leave the house, then some bastard's got to be feeding him. New mind the user, get the supplier.
- offspring06, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8I'm 250 lbs and feel like I need to lose some weight but I can't imagine adding another 1000 lbs to my frame. I would start speaking the language of the Hutts.
- hode, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Good for you. Your heart will thank you for it later in life.
Make sure you have a high quality pad and use it on carpet so you don't hurt your knees. - guitarh3ro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Dear idiots,
a half ton is not 500 pounds, it's 1000.
Thanks!
Love,
guitarh3ro - atbnet, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10I agree that it's just a cop out to blame it on DNA. You don't get fat eating good foods. You get fat eating a pan of brownies in one sitting and then playing video games all day.
Those of us with lower metabolism just need to realize that we can't be lazy, we need to put forth more effort to stay fit. - UrbanVoyeur, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9"f you have a normal body, you got genetically lucky, but don't hold yourself above others as if you've worked your ass off for your body type.
Most of you guys are just as lazy as the fat people, Mother Nature just happen to cut you a break."
Umm, no. You have to eat professionally, 10-12 hour a day reach his weight and maintain it.
Wanna get fat and stay fat? Eat foolishly and don't exercise. It's not rocket science. - arbulus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8@celestial and rexCo
Grow up. This cat is trying to do the right thing and he's going what he can. There's nothing wrong with the way he's going about his exercise regime. Who says DDR isn't as good or as effective as a treadmill? It's definitely one hell of a workout and it's definitely alot more fun.
People like you make me sick. I was overweight as a child (but lost weight later due to playing sports) and I was miserable. I was taunted and teased and treated like a piece of ***** by ***** like you for as long as I can remember. No one deserves that. No 10 year old child deserves being brutally beaten up just because of his weight, and no one regardless of age needs to be made to feel inferior because of it either.
@davidkeithjones: I commend you. You, sir, deserve a digg up. - fatlip, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8did you just call mexico fat?
- theroyalweman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8@aantix:
*****.
if you know your body requires additional effort to maintain your weight, and you don't go through that additional effort, then YOU are lazy. don't bemoan the fact that people with more slender builds have to do less to maintain their weight than the obese. there is a huge difference between obesity (which is normally the result of lifestyle decisions - no exercise and poor diet), and people who are naturally predisposed to have a larger build. this guy weighted nearly 1300 *POUNDS* - he was obese because he allowed himself to be.
you are correct when you say that everyone has to deal with their genetics, but obesity on this level is not genetic - it is a choice. it may not be the most PC thing to say, but it's a fact. - n00bst3r, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9BMI is such BS anyways. Last year when I was in the best shape of my life for wrestling and had 8% body fat, it said that I was overweight.
- tkstock, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9The thing that gets me - this should be a self-correcting situation.
Once he becomes bed-ridden, he can't go get more food, so who is bringing it to him? Stop bringing him Big Macs, pizzas, and soda and start bringing him salads and water!! -
