- gl77, on 03/31/2008, -1/+161"There will be miles of TUBULAR highways!" is he talking about the interwebz?
- mrivorey, on 12/19/2007, -0/+156All that progress, and mom still goes shopping while dad goes to work.
- Wemblea, on 12/19/2007, -2/+123...so we haven't created a superhighway but we have lolcats...possibly we need to rethink our decision making paradigm?
- Bviper, on 12/19/2007, -2/+88Cargo rocket!!! LMAO that has to seriously be the worst idea in the history of "future" predictions.
They did in fact get five things right, mentioning of a GPS like system, rear view camera screens, decentralized cities, planned housing, and under ocean highways (although not as glamorous)
I want a sun powered electro suspension car :( Oh and apparently "father" still makes the decisions in the future. - ricksite, on 12/19/2007, -0/+79The technology exists to have a car drive itself but it gets its instructions from a punchcard? LOL
- adamlewen, on 12/19/2007, -0/+63I love the analog futuristic traffic density radar!
- gpcprog, on 12/19/2007, -6/+64And obesity kills 1 in every 1 Americans.
- nigh7dagger, on 12/19/2007, -1/+56Sure about that? Take aviation. If World War 2, the Cold War, etc. hadn't come along, we would be quite a bit less advanced. Hell, if the military hadn't wanted to connect a bunch of computers together, they wouldn't have developed ARPANET and then had that evolve into the internet.
- tmyprod, on 12/19/2007, -4/+55This describes absolute hell. There could be nothing worse than bland, endless suburban sprawl. The world would lose any and all character. This sounds terrible.
- Thundercat1971, on 12/19/2007, -0/+42Ahh, brings back fond memories of the Horizons ride at Epcot. This was looped on one of the screens in the ride.
By the way, it costs enough to heat my house. Could you imagine the amount of energy to heat a highway?!?!?!? - potterboy, on 12/19/2007, -2/+41About 50% True and about 50% Jetsons.
- Zoshchenko, on 12/19/2007, -7/+44The Disney writers and animators mistakenly assumed people would overcome their differences and move forward in their desire for world peace and economic growth. Instead we are on a backward course fueled by religious intolerance and greed. The roads of the future are going to be dirt trails traversed by gangs who steal gas and food from anyone they encounter. Mad Max is where we're headed. Not the idealized vision of Disney in 1958.
- Delusionist, on 12/19/2007, -10/+45I know, what a shame. Bitch should stay in the kitchen where she belongs.
- ieatsmurfs, on 12/19/2007, -1/+33I actually remember watching this as a kid back in the early 90's. I had no idea it was from the 50's. Very cool to see it again.
- spoodigity, on 12/19/2007, -3/+35Translation: Americans of the future will be lazy bastards who won't even have to walk 3 feet to accomplish anything.
Oh wait... somehow this is somewhat accurate. - philthetechie, on 12/19/2007, -18/+50oddly enough, some of those things we have already have today... maybe we'd have more if we weren't too busy fighting wars
- inactive, on 12/19/2007, -1/+31Lawyer: So Mr. Mickey Mouse.. you want to divorce your wife Minnie because she is going crazy?
Mickey: NO.. how many times do I have to tell you she is *****' goofy?! - metalkiwi, on 12/19/2007, -0/+30Tex Avery FTW

- Gillos, on 12/19/2007, -0/+25Actually wars drive technological advancement, they don't slow it down. Look at all the amazing inventions to come from WW2. Radar, the microwave, jet engines, advances in computers, communications, and rocketry come to mind. Without WW2 and the sacrifices and hardwork of that generation would we have cellphones, the internet, or satellite TV? Maybe not.
- mrivorey, on 12/19/2007, -0/+24Actually, all UPS trucks and most new FedEx trucks have a rear view monitor in it so they can see directly behind them when they're backing. Some trash trucks use 'em too. Kinda pointless on a Honda Civic though.
- WootZoot, on 12/19/2007, -3/+26I prefer lolcats
- pilot3033, on 12/19/2007, -3/+24That is until the buisness that owns the roadways decides that its more profitable scale down maintenance work, and increase toll fares repeatably until the roads are un-drivable, and there is no incentive to actually do anything, because that company owns all the local motorways.
If you think you have too many pot holes in your town, petition the local government (a la City Council, the Mayor's Office, etc.) to devote more tax money to roads and highways. Get signatures from neighbors, vote for representatives who intend to listen to you (hell, just start voting in local elections period).
So many people are short sighted in their thinking about "the government", as if the Federal government has everything to do with it. Here's the reality: there are multiple levels of our government, and its much easier, and much more effective to fix and change things at your local level, than it is the Federal. And furthermore, many of the issues that we bitch about can be resolved at the local and state levels. More than that, change at the local and then state level, effects change on the Federal level.
There is no need to resort to giving away our country to corperations, when your pothole problem can be easily remidied with a little action.
Put simply, your local government can do many things for you, you just need to work on it. And remember, the government can have departments run at a loss, corporations can't. - inactive, on 12/19/2007, -1/+22Way back, in the infancy of rocket science, they tried to use rockets here to deliver mail between the US and Mexico. They figured it'd be faster if they just launched the mail over the Rio Grande. Yeah, that didn't work out so well. A few lost mail bags and a burned down saloon later, they gave up on that.
- joshtj, on 12/19/2007, -0/+21Dugg for oldschool Disney music. I think modern animation has lost a little something without those scores.
- phlll, on 12/19/2007, -0/+20Dugg for the Punch Cards.
- slothlovechunk, on 12/19/2007, -0/+19Not to mention mom isn't a fat cow from not having to walk anywhere.
- Awspire, on 12/19/2007, -0/+17WTF? They had the foresight to predict rear view mirrors would be replaced with cctv, yet they figured puchcards were a lasting technology. The predictions were up and down on this video.
- noahhoward, on 12/19/2007, -3/+20They got 5 out of 54.
- Better Visibility
- Video rear view
- Higher speeds = more readable signs
- Commuters range increased
-"GPS" - aquadude, on 12/19/2007, -4/+21Look! It's the NAFTA super highway plans!
- MoosaofND, on 12/19/2007, -0/+16In the real future, mom goes shopping on her way home from work... I wish families could get by on one income these days.
- RawOysters, on 12/19/2007, -0/+16How come the ambulance service and the road builders have flying cars, but the people are still ground bound?
- joshuaer, on 12/19/2007, -1/+17Well they did get allot right for a carton.
1. Radiant heated roads - not in use all over but some places have them.
2. radar screens showing the road well not radar but they do some test cars that have that feature.
3. Rear view video.
4. With people expanding outside of urban areas the commuter will have to travel many more miles ( but not at much faster speeds )
5. electronic selector takes over the driving - not out yet but many companies have been testing it out for year.
6. synchronized scanning map = in car GPS ( man i wish mine had that bunch card system LOL )
7. Wifi internet in cars.
8. TV in cars.
9. moving sidewalks in malls.
but i guess is you say 1,000,000 thing at least 1000 will be right. - Error601, on 12/19/2007, -0/+15Interesting stuff. Too bad they didn't include a list of contributors. You'll probably find a number of big name Science Fiction writers in there.
- wilf_brim, on 12/19/2007, -0/+14I was wondering what their batting average is. Now I know. Glad somebody has less of a life than I do. I can sleep well tonight with that thought.
- Computer_Kid, on 12/19/2007, -0/+14mmm... I'm going to get a degree in Imagineering!
- potterboy, on 12/19/2007, -0/+14http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6S18LCISRm4
- ieatsmurfs, on 12/19/2007, -0/+13well father may have to walk from his private parking spot to his desk.
- noahhoward, on 12/19/2007, -0/+13Nope, we'd still be laughing at the idea of the cargo rocket.
- loqqq, on 12/19/2007, -0/+1185? Zippity-doo-dah!
- thecheatah, on 12/19/2007, -0/+11I think they were close enough
- IbraAlYahud, on 12/19/2007, -0/+11Just because it hasn't happened doesn't mean it won't. Don't go crushing my dreams.
- FTLJohnson, on 12/19/2007, -0/+10I mentioned this article to a friend and he pointed out that this sort of innovation is in fact happening, but that exactly like I was saying above - we are only seeing the major innovations IN the cars... The external stuff isn't happening because there is no competition. Most of the stuff that Disney predicted IN the cars, rear veiw camera displays, safety devices, and heads up displays HAVE actually been developed....
- yomamaisfat, on 12/19/2007, -1/+11Wow. The future looks a lot like Star Wars: Episode I Racer.
- inactive, on 12/19/2007, -0/+10I think that I saw those jerks in pod 6 around the end.
- sparced, on 12/19/2007, -4/+14Only Americans would think of placing a glorified highway next to the great pyramids of Egypt .
- patthew, on 12/19/2007, -0/+9You missed one: people conduct business meetings from their cars too now, although sans the hands-free driving.
- KingGorilla, on 12/19/2007, -0/+9We need to bring back punch cards
- bmystry, on 12/19/2007, -0/+9Did you see the part where they become one with the mountains, that was cool.
- gllopc, on 12/19/2007, -3/+12Nice summary. My thoughts exactly. And now for the painful part:
Allot: 1. To parcel out; distribute or apportion: allotting land to homesteaders; allot blame., 2. To assign as a portion; allocate: allotted 20 minutes to each speaker.
"A lot" is two words. -
