"Girl, doc claim fingers not chopped off"
"I was cutting spinach in a field. Suddenly, the landlord came and asked me to hand over my sickle. When I refused, he twisted my arm and took it away from me. I don't know how the rumour spread that my fingers were chopped off," she said. Khusboo's father Sukho Ram and mother Dukhni also echoed similar views.

A thousand years of tradition can make people out in the sticks do some really horrendous things... like say picket soldiers' funerals or beat a gay guy to death and drag him behind a truck. Oh wait, that was in America.
- NtroP, on 10/12/2007, -1/+32"Local police have registered a complaint...?"
WTF? They need to register a boot up his ass. - martalli, on 10/12/2007, -2/+32The tsunami affected Tamil Nadu, not Bihar. Bihar has no coastline.

Good find for the more accurate article. - TomP, on 10/12/2007, -5/+17i nominate this guys member to be cut off with a blurnt knife
- martalli, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11The caste system is no longer the law, but unfortunately money still talks. Corruption continues to be a severe problem for India.
- martalli, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Christmas is a national holiday in India, though.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Just another terrible example of "man" treating "man" like *****...sad...
- martalli, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Our American problems of black versus whie pale in comparison the the variety of castes and communities in India. My wife is from a small village in southern Karnataka. In her panchayat (township) alone, there are seven different languages spoken at home, and considerably more groups (castes) of people, including Pariahs, Soligas, Tamil Catholics, Lingayats, Muslims, and Wotus, just to name a few.
There is no majority in India, just thousands of different minorities. - ateoto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6How do you make the assumption that the man is a Muslim? The predominant religion in India is Hindu.
- dbalaski, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1050 years ago, yes -- it doesn't mean that much any more..
- VolatileWhimsy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6This is so sad..
- tpar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6It is in India where money rules. They said that the field was own by upper class landlord. Police cant even touch him.

- enharmonix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@MegaHyster: Concur. Buried inaccurate. Good find, jcembree.
- devindotcom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I wouldn't say it "doesn't mean much." If it guided and restricted their culture for a thousand years it's had some lasting effects, and prejudice against the shudra is still a huge problem (in addition to corruption).
- redneckblues, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3British occupation made Christmas common.

Bihar was once the center of India.
it SUCKS now, and is DIRTY.
Go South! Chennai's where its at. - VolatileWhimsy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I thought they had been moving away from the caste system for awhile now.. :/
- masscrazy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Your country invades and kills half a million people! And many people in your country support your government! Whose sick now?
- iknoritesrsly, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4besides this being fake, look at how much this thing is spun--should be obvious. :p
foraging for edible... foraging? lol
mistakenly, because she would never realize that she was in a farm... right.
entered not trespassed, again, how is someone supposed to tell a farm from a railroad?
removing, not stealing, of course... see above
accidentally strayed instead of, "oh hey look, a farm, i bet they have stuff i can take to eat."
vs. the violent enraged farmer.
give me a break :p
i'm not advocating going around chopping people's fingers off, but this is such typical ***** lazy westerner shock value reporting. in other words, LAME.
of course suggesting that it's wrong for the farmer to do such a thing when it's LEGAL in america to SHOOT AND KILL trespassers seems pretty hypocritical, but you know, who cares about minor things like that. - martalli, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Bihar has been beset by "Buddha's curse". When Buddha was still alive, Patna (the capital of Bihar) was alive with new centers of study and a thriving civilization. One visitor remarked that it truly was the greatest city of the world. I don't have the exact wording, but Buddha responded to the effect that as surely as he stood there, Patna would eventually be the worst city in the world. Now, Bihar is the worst or close to the worst of the states of India in education, health, and other factors. The state government is a virtual banana republic of corruption.
Corruption is rampant everywhere, but most other states at least accomplish varying degrees of generally good government. Pertinent to the above article - caste fears and politics have been preyed on by the corrupt politicians, expecially in Bihar. Fortunately, the story appears to be overblown or simply innaccurate (unless the lrich guy paid off the poor family.)
I agree witht he above poster - if you're going to live in India, move south. Bangalore and Chennai have a much more toleratn and peacceful history than most of the north. - martalli, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Christians are the number one minority (ahead of Muslims) in Tamil Nadu and Kerala. Christianity has long roots there, stretching back to the Apostle Thomas. The long history of Christianity may not hold true for all of India, but in the far South of India, Christianity has a long tradition.
- Briankb68, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4and it didn't really happen.

Sickle taken away because girl was stealing spinach = ZOMG FINGARS SEVERED!!!1 OH THE CRUELTY!! INDIANS ARE BAAAAAAD!! - martalli, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2___
- martalli, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Indians have railed against the injustice of caste for years. Gandhi and Swami Vivekananda argued against it. Even Basava, the founder of the Lingayats, argued abounst castism in the 12th century.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Basava - martalli, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I don't think we are outsourcing our tech jobs to rich Bihari farmers. The educated younger people we are outsouring jobs share a world outlook much closer to the educated young people in America and Europe than they share with the more backward folks like the rich farmer
- mrhaines, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The caste system should be abolished...no religious disrespect intended...
http://www.dalitnetwork.org/ - martalli, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2As long as we are just drawing broad generalizations, Rai is typically a Hindu name, as in Aishwarya Rai.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aishwarya_Rai - kaijunexus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Thank you. Come again.
- martalli, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Gosh, if you are going to equate Hindu Biharis with al-Qaeda, its only fitting for extremists to lump all Americans in with their own misconceptions.
- chatty82, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I don't consider this to be one of the penalties of a "lawless" state. In Islamic society cutting off the hand of the criminal offender is one of the penalties for stealing that is as famous as boiling invaders in vats of oil.
I also consider it paternalistic to have to hide my asprin from an illiterate "Lady Mummy" who breaks, enters, inspects and loots former British colony residences to get all the asprin for herself. - VolatileWhimsy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Christianity did start in the middle east........

- bvnay, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Just a note for people commenting on the Indian caste system - For the most part, it is dying, and eventually it will done with. Just like how the blacks were treated like 3rd class citizens just about 50 years ago. It is just another country like any other which has its own internal issues to deal with.
Btw, the news is a rumor. - microbreak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Pictures or it didn't happen.
- MOJIRA, on 05/17/2008, -0/+1Umm, doesn't money rule, everywhere?
In any case, I'm really glad that this story isn't correct (see above for a comment and link to another article refuting the finger cutting).
[rant] However, worse crimes than this happen all the time. It's always nice to stop and think about what you have instead of what you don't have. There is ALWAYS someone way worse off than you, especially if you're reading this. [/rant] - jaycliche, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1In America, it would have been the 10 year old doing the cutting of someone else's hand....with a gun...in our country many children have been vilified already.
- abibaby, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Even though it was true (I know it was just a rumor), you cannot blame the whole country, for an incident by a person or few. Its like supporting ideas of Bin Laden, Bush and Sarddam.
