- scubasteve11, on 10/10/2007, -4/+123I'm a cop, and love things like these. The more people that know their rights, the better. The only way we can get rid of the corrupt cops, is for people to speak up. The people who are making the news are the very, very small minority of police officers.

I think I'm going to build that rocket to Mars soon... - MassiveTaTas, on 10/10/2007, -4/+27Don't make comments like "I wanted to be a police officer once but I decided to graduate from high school." Or, "bad cop, no doughnut."

- melandersen, on 10/10/2007, -0/+16Believe it or not...people are often arrested without committing a crime...calmly talking to a police officer has become a crime in some places, and for those people who refuse to allow cops to be above the law and are concerned with the protection of civil rights, I think this is a very important piece of knowledge. Unfortunately, most people don't care about civil rights until theirs have been violated.
- wittyname, on 10/10/2007, -1/+16Even simpler: Use common sense.
- tehpwnrate, on 10/10/2007, -2/+16I'm glad you posted, because this will help to bring together Diggers and good cops. Thanks for doing a dangerous job and doing it the way you're supposed to.
- tehpwnrate, on 10/10/2007, -0/+13Common sense and shutting up can take you a long way in this world.
- xstarsprinklesx, on 10/10/2007, -1/+11Maybe you shouldn't be driving if you're over the legal limit.

- melandersen, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9I agree with DukeMojo--the concentration of corrupt cops is much higher in many places--and not necessarily urban areas. I moved from Detroit to Lincoln, NE--where cops run the city on fear and get away with a lot of unjust behavior because the judicial system fully supports them...
- tekirkedicik, on 10/10/2007, -2/+11this guide is just made for u.s.a
- xstarsprinklesx, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7FYI: Opening your statement with "I get arrested all of the time" with no further explanation is probably not the best way to gain credibility.
- HHP2K, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Canadian law (at least, don't know about U.S) states that if you arrest someone, you are legally allowed to search their body. In fact, it's mandatory.
- maz2331, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Don't let them find your *****.
- Gerbil_Juice, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8How about you brush up on the Bill of Rights.
- REBELinBLUE, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Crazy idea then, don't go over the speed limit ;)
- Kahnza, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Useless blogspam.
Not everyone is like you. I for one had no problems the one time I was in a holding cell. I was only in there for about an hour and a half. And I slept for almost an hour. How did I know how long I was in there? I looked at the clock when I went in, and looked at it again when they let me out. - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Curious: Why are you arrested all the time?
- raynar, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5"No Searching."
Well yea, they cant just search without your consent. But they can hold you at wherever you're stopped at until they get a verbal warrant from a judge to search. So you dont have to be a dick if you're not worried, then just let them do it. They're going to anyway. - jeuhrn, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7That's right. I'm from Norway, and most of these things are safe to do here in confrontation with a cop. They don't have guns, so they can't shoot you. They don't have tasers, so they can't electrocute you. They probably have batons, but it would be a ***** of paperwork for them to do if they used it on you, so generally you can be your drunk self, as long as you don't try to run or get too physical with them.
The US public has been sold down the river, you shouldn't have to act like subdued dogs around police in order not get THE TAZER or even a pistol shot through the hip whenever the cop grabs the wrong gun. - bones09, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6#11 - Their first album was Outlandos d'Amour

- skyfire1, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Talking implies that a conversation is taking place. Saying "I want a lawyer" over and over again is not a conversation.

Then STFU - sremick, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4True story:
I was once passed by two town cops blowing past me at a high rate of speed, very much over the speed limit (since I never drive below it myself) and dangerous enough that a lowly citizen like myself would pay hundreds of dollars in fines for doing so. They didn't have their lights on, but that's not unusual around here. Assuming they must be off to some emergency, I didn't think much of it... until I passed them myself later, stopped at the local 24h Mobil-Mart, known to be the "cop hangout" where they get food and stuff and just chill. - ViktorsD, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5http://www.flexyourrights.org discusses this topic in depth. The organization is dedicated to educating people about what they should and should not do during police encounters. The site includes an FAQ, videos, a quiz, and a blog relating to this topic. With all the recent tazer-happy cops, it'd probably be a good idea for everyone to know their rights.
- invertedtangent, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6Ive always thought high school needs a compulsory class 'How to talk to police officers'
i remember walking home one night ..at about ..lets say 2am
a van full of boozed up 20ish kids was making a lot of noise parked at a traffic light
one of the guys in the back thought it would be a good idea to shine his torch out of the back window into the eyes of the police officer who happened to be behind the van .....so they were pulled over obviously.
I caught up to them and was walking past right when the officer was speaking to the driver through the window
the drivers excuse was 'Yeah he's a bit of a F*cking smart c*nt'
Bear in mind this is New Zealand I'm talking about and the police are perhaps ...a little less tense than what most of you are used to (they do not carry firearms here) ..but how hard would it to have said ' i am sorry officer , he has had a bit too much to drink'
Honestly , causes so much less trouble for yourself... - Ghoztt, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4It's sad that lists like these are needed. Dark times indeed.... "Protect and serve" - yeah right. Many cops remind me of Black Widow spiders. Just waiting to catch you and eat you alive.
- resplence, on 10/10/2007, -3/+6"The people who are making the news are the very, very small minority of police officers."
I'm no cop, but I've just been fighting off an allegation that "most cops are bad" on a related thread ( http://tinyurl.com/3cs3qm ) based simply on the logical grounds that the bad cops who make the news and youtube videos are an abysmally small and skewed sample of the police force, and therefore simply cannot represent it.
Glad to hear from someone from inside that this is really the case (even though the "haters" will gladly point out that you're simply lying, as bad cops do). - datastorageguy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3In the US, if someone is under arrest, probable cause is met by the fact that they have already been arrested (legally that is) and a search of their person would be warranted.
- capiCrimm, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4it depends. It's better to know your local statues. Legally, you are required to say certain things as long as they aren't incriminating. Stop and Identify statutes are the most common example. Common sense rarely applies in law.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5***** that movie kicks ass
- vanlawrence, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3that's terribly sad
- themoors, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3A similar list has been floating around for years. Obiviously this doesn't work in all situations, I mean if you have have 10 pounds of coke and a dead body in your car it really is better to shoot the cop in the face and make a run for it.

- DestroyPoseurs, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5I think this guide assumes that you have actually done something reasonably bad. Don't do any of that don't talk stuff if you honestly haven't done anything that bad. If you are speeding 10 over the limit and you get pulled over and do that whole not saying a word thing all you are going to do is really piss off a cop that would have probably just given you a warning or at most a ticket. And despite what every one of these legal defense websites say if you piss a cop off they CAN find a whole bunch of ***** things to jack up a ticket for. I remember once I was coming back from a closed off beach and I tried that whole shut up and don't talk thing and all it got me was a 115 dollar ticket for parking with my car about an inch (or possibly not at all) beyond a yellow curb. That said if you are doing something really bad shutting up is probably a good idea.
- Jonsblckhwk, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Scuba steve thank god for people like you. I love to rag on cops but i will admit that there are a few good ones. Thank you for serving the public.
