- Nomadelle, on 03/24/2008, -2/+13How about saving the at least 4,000 Americans and countless Iraqis in this five-year war? This war has caused America to become bankrupt. But guess who is getting rich? Bush, and his oil and weapons buddies.
- wordhugger, on 03/24/2008, -1/+10$500 billion dollars divided by 303,701,496 Americans would give everyone a $1646 paycheck to reimburse us for gasoline...

Way to pander, douche. - klasikahl, on 03/25/2008, -0/+4You wouldn't need the check. Gas was just over a dollar on the day of Bush's inauguration.
Also, remember that illegals are counted in our official population numbers. So divide by 280ish million, instead.
Other than that, this list was a total crock of *****. It lost all credibility when it started to suggest the US govt buy private companies like Google and ExxonMobil. Our flag does not have a sickle and hammer on it. Our government has no business running private companies like the aforementioned. It would have been a much better list if it included figures for things like how long world hunger could be irradiated for. How many schools could we have built? Things that would actually have a lasting impact on the American (and world) population.
Oh and let's not forget that this article underestimated the cost of the Iraq war by FOUR TIMES.
NY times put out an article when the estimated cost was 1.2 TRILLION:
http://www.nytimes.com/2007/01/17/business/17leonh ...
Current cost estimates total the Iraq war at TWO trillion dollars. - inactive, on 03/25/2008, -2/+5Absolutely staggering numbers, half a freaking trillion dollars.
- Tiler, on 03/24/2008, -2/+5Instead, we bought the reputation of not being afraid to change our foreign policy when someone decides to commit terrorism on our largest city.
- SeanRoss, on 03/25/2008, -0/+3We lost precious lives American AND Innocent Iraqis, along with being in the process of going bankrupt. What the hell was Bush thinking?
- rofflewoffle, on 03/24/2008, -1/+4Wow. This is staggering.
- dartmanx, on 03/25/2008, -0/+3Funny how the people griping now about 4,000 dead military members now are the ones who, a decade ago, didn't care that they existed. (Cue someone saying "Hey! My wife's second cousin's girlfriend's dad was in the National Guard! I care very deeply!")
Unfortunately, that still doesn't change the fact that we are now seeing the consequences of paying for the Iraq war on a credit card, and letting Countrywide Financial exist. - soaptray, on 03/25/2008, -0/+2Holy smokes, that's an INSANE amount of money! I think that the biggest loss is of the lives. There are more deaths in this 'war' than the actual terrorist attacks.
- Dasliberdan, on 03/25/2008, -1/+3Exxon Mobil, that's amazing!
- dotlizard, on 03/25/2008, -0/+2And what have we accomplished? Iraq did not have WMDs. It DID have movie theaters and bars and women wearing what they wanted and a significant Christian population and one of the few Arab capitals with an open synagogue. But that's all gone now. Show a movie and you'll be shot in the head. Over a hundred women have been randomly executed for not wearing a scarf.
- Joshuarr, on 03/25/2008, -0/+2That's still not very eloquent.
- Joshuarr, on 03/25/2008, -0/+2A trip to Mars, perhaps?
- inactive, on 03/26/2008, -0/+2Where is the "evidence" for your "Warlord" theory? Source?
You mean "Warlord" as in a Christian fundamentalist leading a superpower in the invasion a defenseless country who had nothing to do with 911 and then called the citizens who stand up against the invaders, insurgents?
Is that what you mean by "Warlord"?? - rsek, on 03/25/2008, -0/+2when you see those numbers and facts, you realise that US need a new prez
- mason215, on 03/25/2008, -0/+2i might get dugg down for this but, i am so tired of these articles with what we could of done with the money we DON'T have. We will never get this money back, so why kid ourselves.
- AriaStar, on 03/25/2008, -0/+2This is stupid. The money spent is serious, and the lives lost even worse. But:
"#3 – Digg
We could have purchased Digg.com!
Digg.com is currently on sale for a fantastically low 300 million, but hey we could afford to pay 500 million right? With the 499.5 Billion left over we could throw a seriously bitchin’ party!"
That, my friends, makes this list someone's low-blow attempt at a front-page article. Pisses me off that someone would write this article with this headline, on a DATEPAD.COM blog, and throw that in. What's been lost in Iraq isn't a joke, and this is an insult to those who've been killed and injured, and those who've lost their homes, families, everything they had. Why not write a real article/list instead of this pathetic attempt for another one up on the front-page count? - Sassmo, on 03/25/2008, -0/+2The other one that talked about what kind of technologies and stuff we could develop was better. It included Mech suites.
- decet, on 03/25/2008, -0/+2I'm appalled. "Purchase". It's such an obscene idea. That's not the way to run a world. Don't you know that "purchasing" means actually G_I_V_I_N_G something for taking something? It's just plain wrong.
- inactive, on 03/26/2008, -0/+2I cited my sources. If you don't like them then publish evidence that challenges it. Otherwise, would you be so kind as to not click "Submit Comment" next time? Thank you.
- Joshuarr, on 03/25/2008, -0/+1...as if they were related.
- zephyear, on 03/25/2008, -0/+1trip to mars is pretty cheap, around 50 billion.
more like trips to every planet in the solar system. - collegedegrees, on 03/25/2008, -0/+1How about an ALTERNATIVE to fossil fuels with all that money!
- lightfighter, on 03/25/2008, -0/+0I think,. i will start calling for my check!
- holzp, on 03/25/2008, -2/+2Inventing numbers to solve intractable historical problems : Priceless
- soaptray, on 03/25/2008, -0/+0Good call. Half a trillion dollars into renewable energy.... my god.
- doctorfungi, on 03/25/2008, -2/+1The $19 billion to stop starvation: Ends up in the hands of greedy war lords.
The $12 billion to provide education to every child on earth: *****. It costs $20 billion a year to provide education to one Australian state alone every year.
The $15 billion to provide access to water and sanitation: Ends up in the hands of greedy war lords.
The $23 billion to reverse the spread of AIDS: Won't happen, it's already been tried. - Nomadelle, on 03/24/2008, -3/+1I meant to say, "How about saving the at least 4,000 Americans and countless Iraqis who died in this five-year war?"
