- WWWoody, on 01/17/2008, -2/+16Make it quick, please. If it does take a while, make it something epic; something the aliens will go "remember when that one planet was covered in giant erupting volcanoes that shot out bats and lightning instead of lava exploded?" "Oh yeah, didn't the bats impregnate all the women and the babies in turn ate the mothers or something?" "Yeah lol!"

- MattnJax, on 01/17/2008, -2/+14See I see it the other way. By electing an Evangelical Christian AGAIN, we are electing an idiot that believes in the Apocalypse as told by the Bible, and just like GWB, believes that the end of World and the return of Christ is coming. And these people would love nothing more than to speed up that whole process because they believe it would validate their ***** belief system.

- latrosicarius, on 01/17/2008, -1/+10The Omega Point is a crackpot philosopher's idea.
The first clue that this article is full of nonsense is the very first sentence: "Physicists have long theorized that particle accelerators could destroy the earth".
Wrong, it's a common fear from people who don't have a clue about physics. The sentence would be more accurate if re-written: "Physicists have long had to put up with idiots who, contrary to well supported scientific evidence, irrationally believe that, for some reason, particle accelerators could destroy the earth". - HiddenCanuck, on 01/17/2008, -0/+8Buried for lack of robot uprising.
- ieataquacrayons, on 01/17/2008, -0/+8If I knew the world was ending I would have so much fun. If I didn't I would end up dieing at work doing daily routines.
- tyywebb, on 01/17/2008, -0/+8The guy who thought it up was a Jesuit priest trying to justify the existence of God. I think it's a pretty cool idea and it's the only god that I could justify believing in although it's by no means a necessity. Basically sentient evolution and evolution of all life in general would be teleological in that it is developing toward higher and higher complexity and as we surpass human intelligence, become a giant hive-mind etc, the end result is and intelligence so vast and powerful that the closest word we have to describe it is God. Then this god looks around and creates the universe in reverse time and everything goes back to the big bang. He also thought up a way to justify heaven as being a simulation of beings that ever lived during the Omega Point. Anyway I thought it was pretty interesting, here's the Wikipedia if you want to read more: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Omega_point

- mediaspree, on 01/17/2008, -1/+7Man, either read digg or not. If more people want to see the content it appears on the front page. If more bury it, its off. Everyone is wrong, I know. I illustrate this point by showing anger at your post. Long live the internet.
- doshindude, on 01/17/2008, -0/+6which doesn't seem possible at this point.
- latrosicarius, on 01/17/2008, -0/+6If the sun magically turned into a black hole, it would not suck us in. It would not affect the earth's orbit. It's mass and gravity would remain unchanged. Unless you crossed the event horizon. Black holes only weigh as much as the mass of the original star and everything they have enveloped since their formation. They don't magically have "infinite gravity", which seems to be a common fear.
Think of how many stars there are in the galaxy which do not collide. Even when galaxies "collide", there are hardly any actual collisions. Black holes would act the same as a star. It would be incredibly unlikely that a black hole would be headed so perfectly straight for our sun that it would collide. This is a case, where you can actually say "it's a matter of 'if', not 'when'."
Still, when any two stars come close to one another, they will each affect the other's path, and it could potentially disrupt the orbits of the planets in our solar system. - ae357em, on 01/17/2008, -1/+7I think an invasion of ginger kids is the worst case scenario.
- fartmungerer, on 01/17/2008, -0/+6there's a twilight zone where the earth deviates from it's orbit path and slowly gets pulled in by the sun; people see the sun get larger and larger as the temperatures get hotter and all water evaporates. that would suck

- moskaudancer, on 01/17/2008, -0/+5Is it just me, or does the "Omega Point" thing seem to violate the Second Law of Thermodynamics? Because it sounds like it describes an overall *decrease* in entropy.
- noahhoward, on 01/17/2008, -1/+5"It is hoped that if black holes are produced they will be small enough to evaporate, but only time will tell."

- solidsnake1298, on 01/17/2008, -0/+4Indeed. There was a thing about this on the Discovery channel, the black holes created by the accelerator specifically. These particle accelerators do indeed make black holes. And by black holes I mean microscopic black holes that last no more then microseconds before they dissipate.

- tyywebb, on 01/17/2008, -0/+3Well I think the key to it is communication between localized decreases in entropy. Overall the entire universe would still be increasing in entropy but I don't think this violates the second law because, well, after all just look at the evolution of life.
