Wii Production at 1.8M Per Month but still can't keep em in stores
1up.com — We all know that Nintendo's little white wunderkind, Wii, is in high demand and short supply. How short that supply is, exactly, has been the product of guesswork and estimation, but the company's outgoing marketing head George Harrison has finally given a definitive answer.

- SkippyDoorknob, on 11/19/2007, -2/+52Not sure what you're trying to say, but the Wii has already surpassed the 360 in worldwide sales.
- Phyltre, on 11/19/2007, -2/+18I'm glad the Wii is keeping competition really strong, and I hope we have a strong (at least) 3-way competition for the foreseeable future. Nintendo is profiting from oodles of hardware sales, Microsoft owns software attach rates, and the PS3...well...I hear it has movies and might cure cancer.
- mem2, on 11/19/2007, -2/+1what competition, all u wiiboys are constantly crying that the Wii isnt aimed @ gamers, so how can it be a win ?

see that point where the 360 goes above the Wii for about two weeks? Halo 3
Other then that the 360 and PS3 can't compete with the Wii and I think at this point its a battle between the two for 2nd. What else do they have that will be able to compete with Galaxy, Brawl and Kart? Not to mention the "casual games" like Wii Fit, Wii Music and such that may be just as popular as Wii Sports itself. Unless some other company comes into this or either Sony or Microsoft come up with something that is truly revolutionary then I don't think the Wii can be stopped. On a side note I think Sony is looking more and more like Sega everyday which can be either a bad thing or a good thing for Sony but will hopefully be a good thing for us.- AuburnTigers, on 11/19/2007, -0/+2What is that huge spike for Sony?
- bCabulon, on 11/19/2007, -5/+1Motorstorm and Oblivion came out around that time.
- skywake, on 11/19/2007, -0/+8that is when it came out in Europe and Australia
- BabyWookie, on 11/19/2007, -3/+1Real next-gen gaming consoles are not really meant to compete with the Wii, any way. It's kind of like expecting Lexus' to compete with Accords... different price-points, different demographics, etc. The 360 and the PS3 appeal to sophisticated, demanding gamers and techies, while the Wii appeals to the masses of Walmart-shopping simpletons.

- tadj, on 11/19/2007, -5/+46Wii sales have been at ~300,000 for the last few weeks now (1.2m per month) - I think they are going to struggle massively to meet demand if they are only going to ship 1.8m for Nov and Dec - especially with Black Friday coming up!!
http://vgchartz.com/hwcomps.php- sanman, on 11/19/2007, -1/+30Retailers are getting smart and selling their Wiis as part of bundles
Makes sense - if they can't raise the prices, then at least they can tack on other stuff that will create wider sales movement in games, etc- Cyber_Akuma, on 11/19/2007, -1/+3Didn't Nintnendo originally want to sell the Wii for $200 in the US but retailers said that was too cheap so Nintendo bundled a $50 game and raised the price to $250?
Now they are STILL saying thats too cheap?
Do they honestly think the Will will sell like it did if they force $400-500 bundles which most likely contain games people do not want on everyone?
- Cyber_Akuma, on 11/19/2007, -1/+3Didn't Nintnendo originally want to sell the Wii for $200 in the US but retailers said that was too cheap so Nintendo bundled a $50 game and raised the price to $250?

- getrealnow, on 11/19/2007, -2/+9I work at compusa, and we run out of wii's every time they get shipped to our store. They are sold out on the 3rd day usually.
- Ruska, on 11/19/2007, -1/+2My brother works at GameStop and people still camp out to get a Wii. Especially within the last couple of weeks.
- ibeetle, on 11/19/2007, -2/+1@getrealnow--
You are saying it takes 3 days to sell 20 or 30 Wii's. 6 months ago it took hours; Now you are saying it takes days. That would mean sales are dramatically slowing.
- ibeetle, on 11/19/2007, -0/+1What does Black Friday have to do with the Wii. Do really think you are going to see some retailer discount the Wii?
- laserdog, on 11/19/2007, -0/+2Black Friday is also known as the "official" beginning of the holiday shopping season.
Which is to say, people buy more stuff than usual. Thus, if they're having problems *before* that point, the Wii will be pretty darn hard to find.

People STILL can't find Wiis.
That's amazing (in an awesome way)- sanman, on 11/19/2007, -26/+40I agree. If Nintendo hadn't come up with the Wii, then 10 years from now we'd be blindly chasing 5000x8000 resolution, and game designers would be modeling dental cavities and dandruff, bragging about how this would bring "a whole new level of refreshing realism" to the gaming community.
- Coven, on 11/19/2007, -3/+29vertical widescreen now?
- MarkOfTheDead, on 11/19/2007, -0/+9Would make for a sick Ikaruga sequel.
- sanman, on 11/19/2007, -3/+5whatever, man :P
but seriously, thanks to the Wii there's now the possibility that the console race will now expand into a new war for better interfaces. So it'll be about rich controls and not just rich graphics
Maybe in the future we could see a return of a next-gen Nintendo Power glove. You'll just slip it on, and any movement your hands can make will be reproduced by your character onscreen. You'll be able to toss a football, baseball, basketball, grenade, etc. You'll be able to do fist-fighting or sword-fighting combat directly, etc. Play musical instruments, etc.
I think it'll be great to see Moore's Law giving us newer capabilities in this direction.- aywwts4, on 11/19/2007, -0/+2I don't really know what the maximum number of transistors on a circuit increasing exponentialy has to do with a power glove... This has been possible for ages, there were so many "This is teh future!" tech demos back in the 80s showing everything you just talked about, in the end, nobody took advantage of the hardware.
But I agree with your first point, controllers will be the new front of the video game war. When the competition is using the exact same controller they used in 96 but with a few more buttons no rumble and a tilt sensor, and the xbox is using a modified dreamcast controller with an extra analog stick and a couple extra buttons and triggers. (Compare them side by side, they are the exact same form factor)
- aywwts4, on 11/19/2007, -0/+2I don't really know what the maximum number of transistors on a circuit increasing exponentialy has to do with a power glove... - blahtastic, on 11/19/2007, -0/+11Wouldn't that be tallscreen?
- dezman2003, on 11/19/2007, -5/+20The wii is stopping that from happening how exactly?
- Ajajadude, on 11/19/2007, -6/+10What in the hell are you ranting about?
- drjones78, on 11/19/2007, -2/+21Hes saying no one else would have had the creativity or balls to take gaming in a new direction as the wii, on such a fundamental level.
- betterth, on 11/19/2007, -5/+2He's also saying that technological accomplishment is moot, which I think is *****.
- gnick, on 11/19/2007, -1/+6@betterth
No, he's pointing out that Nintendo has made a technological accomplishment far more novel and innovative than simply throwing hardware at the same old stuff and improving specs that add very little to game play.
- drjones78, on 11/19/2007, -2/+21Hes saying no one else would have had the creativity or balls to take gaming in a new direction as the wii, on such a fundamental level.
- AppleGeorge, on 11/19/2007, -3/+1That's worse than using 800x600 on Windows 95 when I had a 13.1in monitor.
- betterth, on 11/19/2007, -4/+4Uhh if the Wii prevents technical accomplishment by introducing new forms of control than I am very, very anti-Wii. I believe the Wii revolutionizes user input, not devolutionizes technical requirements. I also believe the Wii could only be IMPROVED by more powerful hardware, not vice versa.
Then again, we still have to see how many non-Nintendo made games will actually do well on the console. Nintendo does well because they control the whole process from hardware to software, but the jurys still out on third party. - wentwj, on 11/19/2007, -3/+1Yes! Nintendo has freed us from technological advancement! Now instead of getting games with better graphics we can get a gimmicky controller and a string of games that thrive on their ability to import video games of "tilt the control left! now shake it!" (FYI I have all three systems, and slept outside of target to get the Wii on the opening day. I enjoy it, but it's largely just a gimmick)
- wentwj, on 11/19/2007, -0/+1double post :(
- Coven, on 11/19/2007, -3/+29vertical widescreen now?
- RNEMESiS42, on 11/19/2007, -1/+20This sucks, I've been trying to get a damn Wii since it's the only next gen system I can afford, and it's nowhere to be found. Even with those Wii-finder websites! :/
- JazzFlight, on 11/19/2007, -1/+12Even after checking a Toys R Us every Sunday morning at opening?
I just went in today (just for the buy 2 get 1 free on wii games) and there were plenty of systems to go around if you waited on a line for about 10-15 minutes. - ELCad, on 11/19/2007, -0/+10Jazzy's right get up early on Sunday. I was at Toys R Us today also to get the 3 games for the price of 2 Wii games sale and they had what looked like a 100 Wiis. They sold out out in about 30 mins.
I got mine back in March by waiting an hour on a Sunday at a Best Buy and they had only 20 then. Then I had to look for 2 more weeks to find a second Wii-mote.- nicko68, on 11/19/2007, -0/+1Heh, I feel bad about how I got mine. I was grocery shopping in one of those super store kind of places (The Great Canadian Superstore for my fellow Canucks) and I always go to the electronics section to look around before I check out. There was a Wii just sitting there. I passed it up and then kicked myself.
The same thing happened a month later. I picked it up that time.
- nicko68, on 11/19/2007, -0/+1Heh, I feel bad about how I got mine. - bCabulon, on 11/19/2007, -9/+3An xbox 360 arcade with a second wired controller is only five dollars more than a Wii with a second wiimote and nunchuck. When you compare similar feature sets (in respect to gaming) all three of the new systems are similar in price.
- ELCad, on 11/19/2007, -2/+6You still need a hard drive and WiFi with the 360 Arcade. And wires are so last century.
- bCabulon, on 11/19/2007, -5/+3Wii doesn't have a hard drive. There aren't many Wii games with online play (what else do you need the wifi for?). So, I figured a 360 arcade would be a fair comparison system.
- blahtastic, on 11/19/2007, -1/+2You need the hard drive for xbox backwards compatability and online play though. Both things Wii have (though just barely for the online play).
- CrackaPleeze, on 11/19/2007, -0/+2Message me on this thing. I live in NYC and can go to the Nintendo World for you. They get at least 50 a day, though they sell through those within the first hour of opening.
- JazzFlight, on 11/19/2007, -1/+12Even after checking a Toys R Us every Sunday morning at opening?
- Kelmon, on 11/19/2007, -0/+4I agree but only if the supply is at an appropriate level. Clearly it's not in the best interests of either the retailers or Nintendo to have stock sat on shelves but if the supply is low so that they can, effectively, artificially create an impression of popularity then the news is not so positive.
Personally, I'm trying to buy one but am having much the same problem as everyone else - the things just don't seem to exist. I honestly think I'd have better luck finding the Loch Ness Monster or Lord Lucan at this point in the run up to Christmas. - Cyber_Akuma, on 11/19/2007, -0/+7Makes it hard to believe I was able to get one at launch considering every store is still sold out in my Area.
Actually, before Zack&Wiki and Mario Galaxy came out it was collecting dust a few months after launch, makes me feel like a jerk not playing it when people are dying to get one still... - Naryuu, on 11/19/2007, -4/+1only because nintendo hasnt started making enough...
- smackafiyah, on 11/19/2007, -0/+1I always seem to find one at either walmart or best buy here, just never have the funds to get it right away each time, and are usually gone after about 5-10 minutes
- sanman, on 11/19/2007, -26/+40I agree. - coheedcollapse, on 11/19/2007, -21/+58I swear some Digg users get off on this stuff. It's interesting in moderation, but with something like seven articles per week saying the same thing (Wii is destroying!) it can get a bit old. This is coming from someone who picked one up on the first day.
- AppleGeorge, on 11/19/2007, -11/+22It takes about half a second to scroll up or down or click on another link just so you don't have to complain about seeing it on the front page.
- spudnic, on 11/19/2007, -7/+4But because this article got promoted to the front page, another, potentially new and original article, didn't.
- honeymustardn, on 11/19/2007, -0/+7There isn't a limit of articles that can be put onto the front page...
- spudnic, on 11/19/2007, -7/+4But because this article got promoted to the front page, another, potentially new and original article, didn't.
- sonic2120, on 11/19/2007, -22/+6Its not even really that great of a system. Its cool and all but I haven't played it in months and I was first in line to get it on release day.
- blahtastic, on 11/19/2007, -1/+2I can fix that. Go get RE4 if you haven't played it yet (if it's been awhile maybe think about it anyway, only $30 and awesome), Mario is good and worth the 50 bucks (though i personally don't buy into this game of the millennia business, it's still good), and I hear Metroid is great as well (I haven't gotten around to it myself yet though).
- nicko68, on 11/19/2007, -1/+3I used to think that it's a great system. Then I heard that sonic2120 doesn't play it any more. Now I think it sucks. From now on I will be consulting him/her on all my purchasing decisions.
- ruddy, on 11/19/2007, -12/+27seriously... its like reading "Microsoft Windows outsells OSX 5billion to 1". We get it, congrats, move on.
- MrSteamTank, on 11/19/2007, -1/+2I usually see comments of Windows Vista outselling OSX in in posts where people talk about how great OSX is. Check the Microsoft section under technology. I only see 2 mentions of Vista and both of them are negative. If anything I think it's pretty balanced on digg for the past couple of weeks when it comes to Apple/Microsoft coverage.
- peve00, on 11/19/2007, -18/+5RON PAUL 08!!!!!!!!!!!
- doshindude, on 11/19/2007, -0/+6then take it off your topics to view. Digg is customizeable, didn't you hear?
- skipdog172, on 11/19/2007, -1/+3Odd, I don't recall any Wii stories on the top 10 this week. If you are talking about stories that just "made it to the front page" well then, uh, yeah TONS of stories come up on the front page plenty of times throughout the week. Not sure why you are complaining.
- AppleGeorge, on 11/19/2007, -11/+22It takes about half a second to scroll up or down or click on another link just so you don't have to complain about seeing it on the front page.
- rofflecopter, on 11/19/2007, -5/+18Yeah I got fed up with calling stores and going down and there not been any Wii's in stock, I finally caved and paid 30 bucks extra to buy one off of ebay...
- MorfiusX, on 11/19/2007, -0/+1Same here. Bought one for my wife's birthday. I figured I had more than $30 worth of time running all over the place trying to find one.

- thebellmaster1x, on 11/19/2007, -4/+5Ha, you got scammed.
- solidus636, on 11/19/2007, -4/+16Well then you are an idiot.
- Cyber_Akuma, on 11/19/2007, -1/+9At least he didn't pay $3000-6000 for a PS3 on ebay on launch day...

- ibeetle, on 11/19/2007, -0/+2I bought mine at Toys R US for $249.99.
- bingobongony, on 11/19/2007, -12/+6IT has not been hard to find them in stores around me for a few months now.
- opnickc, on 11/19/2007, -1/+10IT was not hard a few months ago, in some places. but now that consumermas is ramping up, it has become difficult again, at least from what I've seen/heard.
- bluetytanium, on 11/19/2007, -0/+77It prints money!
- SFX112, on 11/19/2007, -2/+27No, the DS prints money. The Wii is a machine that makes machines that print money.
- Shaflugi, on 11/19/2007, -4/+1Nah, that slot isn't for printing money, it's for taking your credit card.
- 9a3eedi, on 11/19/2007, -3/+2NO! It prints Wii points
- billybob217, on 11/19/2007, -6/+1I hope it isn't printing USD...
I'd much rather have Euros or Pounds...
- Drogoganor, on 11/19/2007, -27/+12Who gives a ***** about production numbers other than those who have stock in the company?
Isn't it a games console? Don't you just play games on it?
How popular my choice of console is doesn't reflect how much fun I have on it.
These articles on Digg need to die.- TheClassic, on 11/19/2007, -0/+11You're half right. How much fun you have on your game console is a function of how popular it is and how much fun I allow you to have.
- opnickc, on 11/19/2007, -0/+8"Who gives a ***** about production numbers other than those who have stock in the company?"
Some of us do have stock in the company. Not me, sadly, but last I checked this was a news site, and these business-y things often qualify as news, whether or not you personally are involved or care. - pirloui, on 11/19/2007, -1/+5I care because I think Nintendo do nice machines and great games, and therefor I'm happy that they are healthy.
I also care because of all the MS and Sony fanboys who's been predicting Nintendo death with joy. (Which I can't see the point of. More players, more variation, more)
I see what you mean though. - MrSteamTank, on 11/19/2007, -1/+15Because unpopular consoles die and games no longer get produced for it. RIP Dreamcast. 8P
- terminal157, on 11/19/2007, -0/+13Actually, it's popularity directly effects how much fun you can have with it, as the system's popularity is a huge factor in how many games come out for it and how much variety there is among those games.
- ELCad, on 11/19/2007, -0/+2Wii need more people to play all the free on-line games with. BWii, Mario Strikers, Medal of Honor 2 are already out and SSBB and Mario Kart will be out soon. The more Wiis in people hands means fun.
- ff4marvel, on 11/19/2007, -4/+70just wait till SSBB comes out if you want to see a REAL shortage of supply
- Coniferous, on 11/19/2007, -22/+0Software is dead easy to produce - there is not a single reason that nintendo would not be able to produce enough games. There will be no shortage of games. There were more copies of zelda then there were wiis when it first came out.
- leonhyral, on 11/19/2007, -0/+24He's referring to SSBB creating a massive need for the Wii; not SSBB having the shortage itself. I found it rather easy to understand.
- spudnic, on 11/19/2007, -3/+6Here, have a sticker.
- leonhyral, on 11/19/2007, -0/+24He's referring to SSBB creating a massive need for the Wii; not SSBB having the shortage itself. I found it rather easy to understand.
- Shaflugi, on 11/19/2007, -0/+1A shortage is a shortage. No matter what games are out for it, there still isn't enough for everybody and it will still be hard to find one. :/
- jer2eydevil88, on 11/19/2007, -0/+3With as many WII's as they have purportedly sold I hope they can stamp out enough game discs for SSBB so that we gamers can get copies.
- Tikkimann, on 11/19/2007, -0/+1I think that at one time (possibly in 2005), Twilight Princess, Metroid Prime 3, Mario Galaxy and Brawl were all said to be launch titles. Can you imagine how totally insane that Christmas would be?! People would be selling thier children to get a Wii. The PS3 would be in a sad state...
- Coniferous, on 11/19/2007, -22/+0Software is dead easy to produce - there is not a single reason that nintendo would not be able to produce enough games. There will be no shortage of games. There were more copies of zelda then there were wiis when it first came out.
- Jorge777, on 11/19/2007, -0/+14I really hope that's not 1.8M globally for November and December otherwise I'm starting to wonder when this shortage is finally going to really give Nintendo some damage and an advantage to the other consoles
- ELCad, on 11/19/2007, -1/+4My brother bought a PS3 because he could never find a Wii. Now he regrets not having built in WiFi.
- Cyber_Akuma, on 11/19/2007, -0/+2At least he has hardware PS2 BC, something nobody buying a new PS3 system can get anymore.
- Tikkimann, on 11/19/2007, -0/+3It has, in some ways. There was an article on Digg just last week on how the PS3 looks to make a big return based on its new cheaper model, better games, and a lack of Wiis.
There hasn't been a lot of criticism though because Nintendo is making more Wiis than more than any other console in history (excluding possibly the PS2 and the Dreamcast at launch) - skipdog172, on 11/19/2007, -0/+2I don't really see that happening. You can spend a measely extra 30-40 bucks and just get one on ebay. It's not like it is this hugely dire situation. Those who really want a Wii, CAN GET A WII. If you want to wait until you are paying retail price, then you are waiting along with the huge clumps of millions of others doing the same.
- laserdog, on 11/19/2007, -0/+2As long as the models they are shipping don't break, they'll do fine.
I know a lot of people who are shy of buying a 360 due to the high failure rate.
- ELCad, on 11/19/2007, -1/+4My brother bought a PS3 because he could never find a Wii. Now he regrets not having built in WiFi.
- SamuraiCal, on 11/19/2007, -32/+2What a piece of ***** system. Have you SEEN the lead singer in guitar hero? I'd actually be interested to see if that's how he looks on the 360, because it seems like they wouldn't allow such madness.
- battletrax, on 11/19/2007, -2/+24
The singer is ugly on all the systems. Besides the point of the game is to play guitar. Your gonna miss alot of notes staring at the band members. - skywake, on 11/19/2007, -0/+9SamuraiCal doesn't realise that everybody loves Nintendo. I bet even Bill Gates has a DS sitting on his table and a Wii sitting between his TV and 360 (Phil Harrison probably doesn't but thats a separate issue). The only people who give half a ***** about the graphics on some multi-platform milked franchise game are the fanboys of the opposing systems. I feel sorry for people like you, when SSBB comes out you will be the person who refuses to play it at a party because its on an "inferior system" while everyone else just has fun. That person has a sad future ahead of them....
- linzichan, on 11/19/2007, -0/+9I'm sorry you judge your video games solely by the graphics. It makes me a little sad.
- battletrax, on 11/19/2007, -2/+24
- ZephyrNinety, on 11/19/2007, -29/+6Who's buying them? I sure as hell don't know. The Wii is starting to shape up but it's nowhere near it's competitors. Admit it.
- Ender008, on 11/19/2007, -15/+6You and I will probably get dugg down, but for the record, I'm with you. It's just not as much fun as the 360 or PS3.
Once they get an actual realistic motion sensor/controller, then it'll work, but as of now it's seriously flawed.- drjones78, on 11/19/2007, -6/+16Console gaming vs PC gaming is like comparing mcdonalds to fine dining.
Get a PC if you want to play real games, vs real players in a multiplayer environment where it actually takes skill to compete.
The Wii is a casual console gaming gimmick system, but thats exactly what the console market is. Id take it over any of the other consoles any day.- Cyber_Akuma, on 11/19/2007, -1/+1People who make thousands in Street Fighter and Xbox Halo tourneys would like to have a word with you...

- sanman, on 11/19/2007, -0/+9Yep, that's why Ken Kutaragi no longer has his job
That's how fun it is- Cyber_Akuma, on 11/19/2007, -0/+1To be fair, the man did design the PS1 and PS2, to me the only console that was ever better than the PS2 in it's time was the SNES.
But yeah, he screwed up royal with the PS3.
Reminds me of the late Gunpei Yokoi. The dude made the incredibly popular "Ultra Hand" which was incresibly popular in Japan before Nintendo become a videogame company, as well as several other toys, made the Game&Watch, and he helped develop games like Kid Icarus, Donkey Kong, Mario Brothers, Metroid, and even designed the Gameboy.
He basically was a major role if not the designer of absolutely everything popular and highly rated at Nintendo before and after they started making videogames...... except he also made the Virtual Boy..... which basically did so bad they "forced" him to quit... nad he died in a car crash before he could inveil the new handheld he was working on in his new company.... which was also a smash hit in Japan.
Why is it that in Japan it dosen't matter if you single-handedly design basically every single popular product ever and basically made your company in the past, if you screw up once you are out the door?
I mean, what, will Shigeru Miyamoto get fired if he ever makes a Zelda title that flops terribly? (And before you bring up the CD-I games, Nintendo did not have any involvement in making those)

- brufleth, on 11/19/2007, -0/+5I was over my sister and brother-in-law's place Saturday night. They had a bunch of friends over. We're all in our mid to late twenties. I would consider myself a "gamer" but the rest of them were largely "non gamers." I would never have believed people would get so into something like Wii Tennis. They ate that ***** up. All you're doing is swinging your controller at the appropriate time. EVERYONE was on their feet playing. What 360 or PS3 game has that kind of mass appeal?
The PS3 and 360 are in different, if overlapping, markets.

- Shaflugi, on 11/19/2007, -0/+8Still bitter about the Sega Vs. Nintendo days, are we?
- brufleth, on 11/19/2007, -0/+9Every Wii sold is money in the bank for Nintendo. They make profit on every unit sold and they're sure to make additional cash on controllers and games. What you're suggesting makes no sense at all. If they could sell every person who wants a Wii they would and they'd just make more money.
- Drakk0n, on 11/19/2007, -3/+2I wonder how many of them being sold at this point are just people hording them to sell right before xmas?
I know in my area I will see people walking out of stores with 3-5 units in their trunk and there seem to be a good supply on ebay.
Its just too bad they can't get to releasing more good use of controller games like Wii sports for the unit yet.- seraph582, on 11/19/2007, -0/+1ick. Too gimmicky. Try mario galaxy or metroid prime corruption.

- tekrat, on 11/19/2007, -16/+8I gave up on Ninitendo until well after the holidays. I'm starting to look at Xbox 360 now. Why should I give my dollars to a company that can't get its act together in over a year? I know fanboys are going to digg me down.
But before you do, can you answer my question?- Coded1, on 11/19/2007, -0/+5Maybe if you don't like what Nintendo has to offer you should just go and buy a 360?
- opnickc, on 11/19/2007, -0/+12I posted this on another story:
"It's selling twice as fast as any other home console ever, therefore, Nintendo was never prepared to build as many units as they are, let alone enough to fully meet demand.
I mean, if you were selling a new blender, and the fastest selling blender in the past sold 50,000 units per month (completely arbitrary number), would you really plan to produce 100,000/month? 200,000/month?"- nappyrootz86, on 11/19/2007, -11/+1But you'd figure they'd be able to pick up on this after a few months and adjust their production numbers accordingly. They're not 'mass producing' them on purpose, so that demand will always exceed supply. My roommate has a wii, and the best game on it is Wii Sports and even that gets old after about 30 minutes. I can play my 360 all day because I have more of a variety of games, and they're truly next gen and not gamecube games with motion sensing. While all that is great, the novelty wears off and I want to be able to gawk at the graphics just as much as the gameplay. But who am I kidding fanboys? Nintendo rocks and Sony and Microsoft are garbage, end of story right?
- ELCad, on 11/19/2007, -0/+111.8 million a month is not 'mass producing'?
- nappyrootz86, on 11/19/2007, -5/+0I'm sorry...they may be producing that many, but it doesn't mean they're shipping that many. It makes total sense what they're doing. You can't tell me with all the money they're making from the Wii and DS that they couldn't put some of that profit into expediting shipping or figure out how to cut down on production time so they could make more.
- Brian48216, on 11/19/2007, -0/+10You try building a new factory, hire new workers, and secure new supplies in a few months.
- kingofthisnight, on 11/19/2007, -0/+3First off Nintendo has increased production on the Wii.
http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20070427-nint ...
When it comes to games I think the Wii has a great deal of variety. Hours of entertainment (Zelda, Mario), ADD style games (Rayman), and some of the best party games (Wii Sports, Guitar Hero). Also on the whole novelty of the Wii controller, well the novelty of impressive graphics have worn off. I have been playing photo realistic games for a while now and well some of those games suck. And yes Nintendo does rock... but I also love my Xbox 360.

- nicko68, on 11/19/2007, -0/+5Well, Nintendo is selling a system that does not have a 30% failure rate, so I figure they're doing something right.

- Megaten, on 11/19/2007, -1/+22Um...it might be that not a single one of these falls into your personal preferences, but for the record let me say that this whole notion of 'no good games' has got to ***** end already. Lemmie name off the games I've loved or intend to play when I get through with my current batch:
Zelda: Twilight Princess
Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn
Battalion Wars 2
Trauma Center: Second Opinion
Donkey Kong Bongo Blast
Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles
Resident Evil 4 (in case you haven't played it yet I suppose)
Super Mario Galaxy
Metroid Prime 3
Zack and Wiki: Quest for Barbados' Treasure
Super Paper Mario
Super Mario Strikers
Trauma Center: New Blood
MLB Power Pros (oh god, no joke - this is the most arcady-awesome baseball game ever)
Elebits
Excite Truck (the lowish ratings this game got still boggle my mind)
Super Monkey Ball
And then, yes...there are some fun party games for it like you just made a jab at:
Mario Party 8
Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games
Warioware: Smooth Moves
Rayman: Raving Rabbids
Wii Sports
Wii Play (maybe not to some, but my friends all love playing Pool and that Laser Pong thing on it, not to mention Tanks)
And on top of that, there are some great games that are either also on console, or are getting good scores but I can't personally say I'd play them (but do indicate that there are plenty of quality games available if they did suite someone's tastes):
Guitar Hero 3
Lego Star Wars the Complete Saga
SSX Blur
Madden '08
Scarface
Godfather: Blackhand Edition
Medal of Honor Heroes 2
Manhunt 2
Naruto: Clash of Ninja Revolution
Dragon Ball Z Budokai Tenkaichi 2
God, and please anyone who reads this and doesn't own a Wii and instead prefers a 360 or PS3 - get your head out of your ass on this whole 'bashing' Wii's good games as well. When I tell my friends that Elebits or Super Monkey Ball are fun games, all I hear are silly little snickers when they tell me how much better the 360's games are. I'm constantly shocked by this, cause it isn't like I don't own a 360 myself. When they start naming games like The Darkness, Dead Rising, Lost Planet, etc...to me and call THOSE quality titles but the Wii's are somehow subpar - I mean seriously, some people need to get a clue about these things. Personally, from the games I own on the 360, all I can say is that the selection lacks any sort of diversity (And I mean, I like some awkward stuff on that thing...Wartech: Senke no Rondo, Bullet Witch, Earth Defense Force...) beyond mostly being a shooter's paradise (don't get me wrong, I love em too). On the Wii though, I have a great Strat RPG in Fire Emblem, a great adventure game in Zelda, good action games like Battalion Wars 2, fun racing games like Excite Truck, sports games with Mario Strikers and Power Pros, a solid RPG with Paper Mario, one of the best platformers ever with Mario Galaxy, and then some games I could only experience on the Wii or DS in games like Trauma Center and Elebits. So to say the console is only showcasing party games - a bit naive.- KrustyTClown, on 11/19/2007, -9/+2That is a very long post defending the Wii, how much do you make at Nintendo.

i was just in a GameStop on Union Square in NYC that had just gotten in exactly 6, and they "needed to keep a couple". The 4 that they could sell i'm sure went pretty damn quickly, as one was sold in the 15 minutes i was in the store.
- DraconWolf, on 11/19/2007, -0/+5Really? Seriously? Can you buy like 10 then? Because there are people all over around who can't find one and are willing to pay $350 for them. I have YET to see one in any of my local stores since release last year.

- archer75, on 11/19/2007, -11/+3I find that everyone I know who has purchased a Wii absolutely love it at first but quickly became bored with it. After all this time Wii Sports is still the best game on it(haven't played mario galaxy yet). Hopefully it will get more great games.
- Jorge777, on 11/19/2007, -0/+5I had a friend who had a Wii and 4 other games, Wii Sports was all he ended up playing and it ended up collecting dust and him playing the 360 and it's stellar lineup this year. Super Mario Galaxy came out and he finally started playing again "SMG is like crack" is how he calls it. If you had a choice of getting XBox's lineup or the Wii's, it's easy to see that 360's is better but... a real gamer would want both :)
- DagMX, on 11/19/2007, -0/+5Thats a mattter of perspective.
As an FPS fan, the wii gives me a lot. metroid is amazing, even the slightly dull CoD2 and MoH:H were really good.
Rayman is addictive too especially as a party game. - ButchersBoy, on 11/19/2007, -0/+4I am a Wii360 owner. TBH I'm a lifelong Ninty fanboy, but I also love my online FPS. Now with my PC a bit out of date I am absolutely loving H3 and CoD4 on the 360, but let me tell you this, SMG is indeed "like crack". The last time I enjoyed a game this much was TOOT. Every moment with SMG is pure unadulterated joy. It is also one of the rare games that my wife is drooling over. I actually don't want it to finish, I am taking my time to pick up all stars without racing to the end. I am already concerned for what is to follow once it is done. Once the initial fervour settles down, once people put it in perspective of other games of its generation, this game is going to go down as an all time classic.

- Gohan5052, on 11/19/2007, -13/+2How can a system with simpler and older parts be so hard to keep in stock? The 360 was pretty easy to find around april 06 how is it still so hard to find a Wii?
- thebellmaster1x, on 11/19/2007, -1/+10Because people buy many more Wiis than 360s? It's not really that hard of an explanation; come on.
- SillyRabbits, on 11/19/2007, -7/+3Because Nintendo keeps the supply artificially low. After this amount of time they could have ramped up to 5,000,000 units a month if they wanted. However, it makes for much better headlines if you are saying that it will be hard to get one for the x-mas season than if you have stacks of 100's of units sitting in every store. Their target audience (non-gamers) will think that this system is super hot, and they should get one too. At this point, it's only marketing.

- minoss, on 11/19/2007, -10/+6Not being able to stock an item over a year after release is in no way a good thing.
- milliamp, on 11/19/2007, -2/+3This is a valid point, at first the company line was "we didn't expect that kind of demand", but a year later?
I guess people will have to find something else to buy this holiday season. - DraconWolf, on 11/19/2007, -0/+10They're making 1.8 million a month and still selling out like crazy. This is up from the 500,000 they were initially producing per month. They're trying but people are just still buying the heck out of them. I don't think people realize that you can't just snap your fingers and out pops a piece of hardware.
- bmartin, on 11/19/2007, -0/+4Honestly, if people bought my product, which I was able to sell at a profit (unlike the Xbox 360 and PS3, which have been sold at losses, so they claim) so quickly that I couldn't keep them in stock and the demand wasn't dwindling, I'd consider that to be a good thing.
The worst part about the demand is that they're so hard to come by, people scalp them. - dood, on 11/20/2007, -0/+0Were I Nintendo, at this point I would be concerned about the third party developers sticking around after we pass a second heavy-buying season with severe shortages.

Just because they have Wii boxes in the window does not mean the consoles are in stock.- Shaflugi, on 11/19/2007, -0/+3Not a bad idea.. if I had a spare $250, I'd buy a Wii and sell it on eBay in December. :P
- skipdog172, on 11/19/2007, -0/+1Maybe you should go pick them up and make a profit on this opportunity?

- Rupan, on 11/19/2007, -20/+5Wii is only good for 2 things:
Super Mario Galaxy
and
Legend of Zelda Twilight Princess
Everything else sucks. Now digg me down diggers; digg me down.- stellarceltic, on 11/19/2007, -1/+82 things more than you're good for
- KrustyTClown, on 11/19/2007, -2/+1ooooooooooooooo
- DagMX, on 11/19/2007, -0/+12Metroid Prime 3?
Rayman Raving Rabbids?
Warioware?
Super paper Mario?- KrustyTClown, on 11/19/2007, -2/+1Point?
- MJDub, on 11/19/2007, -4/+2Considering that's still twice as many worthy games as both PS3 and 360, I'll digg you for that.
- thatcrazycommie, on 11/19/2007, -0/+3Corruption? SSBB? Super Paper Mario? A million awesome VC games?
- xlar54, on 11/19/2007, -0/+1Bowling is kinda fun... for awhile anyway...?
- R3Dirkulous, on 11/19/2007, -0/+2ill add zak and wiki in addiion to he titles already mentioned from other repliers
- brufleth, on 11/19/2007, -0/+1Strange. Get a group of people who range in age from 20-60 and they won't enjoy either of those games. They'll play other Wii games for hours though.
- DraconWolf, on 11/19/2007, -0/+1I'm almost 30 and my fiancee and myself have been playing Mario Galaxy like crazy as have our friends. Your logic is flawed.
- stellarceltic, on 11/19/2007, -1/+82 things more than you're good for
- DagMX, on 11/19/2007, -0/+4Sigh...over here in india, the wii is abundant in stock at the shop I go to...primarily because everyone here only knows of the 360 and ps3...
- wyrdness, on 11/19/2007, -0/+5I've heard that the Wii is in plentiful supply in some countries. So why don't Nintendo ship fewer to those countries and more to places where it's in real demand.
- wentwj, on 11/19/2007, -0/+1I would assume they are already doing this.
- dood, on 11/20/2007, -0/+0When I was in Brazil, I saw a Wii for R$1999, which is about US$800. That was a few months back, and was the first Wii I had ever seen for sale anywhere "in the world" (ok, Rio and Seattle)

- imightbewrong, on 11/19/2007, -2/+3they should raise the price and sell where supply hits demand for optimum profits.
...jk keep it cheap!!!- hockey, on 11/19/2007, -2/+1If they do that then it won't sell as much regardless of how "innovative" it is.
- wentwj, on 11/19/2007, -0/+1The point is if they raised the price to a point that they JUST sold out of every shipment by the time the next one came in, they wouldn't lose any sales (still selling out), and they'd make more profit per machine.
Of course they'd get the worst PR in history when they RAISE the price on a console... so they won't do this, but sti..

Your welcome.- linzichan, on 11/19/2007, -1/+10My welcome is what?
- xlar54, on 11/19/2007, -0/+34Here's why you cant get one...
Bob unloads the truck at Walmart. Bob is a good employee. But Bob has alot of friends, and Bob has a cell phone. So the moment a shipment comes in, Bob calls his friends, and doesnt ...quite... put the stock on the shelves just yet.....
***** Bob.- brufleth, on 11/19/2007, -0/+13And then Bob's friends put those Wiis on Ebay and buy Bob a case of beer.
- Hypermarkalan, on 11/19/2007, -0/+5I hope a drunken Bob gets syphilis from a one-eyed tranny hooker.
- xlar54, on 11/20/2007, -0/+1Hear hear! Bob should die a slow, painful death.
- Hypermarkalan, on 11/19/2007, -0/+5I hope a drunken Bob gets syphilis from a one-eyed tranny hooker.
- dorkino, on 11/19/2007, -1/+1So go buy one off eBay then if you want it that badly.
- bmartin, on 11/19/2007, -0/+3This happened to my brother (he's 11). We were in a GameStop w/ my parents and asked if they had a Wii. One of the employees said no, then another one said yes. They went in the back room and started arguing. A couple minutes later, one of them came back out and sold a Wii to my father.
This was in August. Unfortunately for my brother, my parents decided it would be an Xmas present, so he's playing Battle for Wesnoth these days on none other than Ubuntu. It's so easy that an 11-yr-old can use it.- atomicpoet, on 11/19/2007, -0/+2That's how I got my Wii, actually. I'm friends with a GameStop employee.
- xlar54, on 11/21/2007, -0/+1Its BOB!!!! ;)

- Shawn4168, on 11/20/2007, -1/+1Are you trying to sell Male Enhancement pills or what?
- brufleth, on 11/19/2007, -0/+13And then Bob's friends put those Wiis on Ebay and buy Bob a case of beer.
- fluffyturtle, on 11/19/2007, -1/+5This is great for Nintendo since they are making money off the hardware.
In my area I can get a hold of one with enough searching but it is far from easy. The remotes though are actually in stock thankfully, at one point I could find the console but not the controller.
I have been an avid Nintendo fan since the NES but honestly, why is the Wii doing so well? There aren't that many good games out for it, like a poster above pretty much just Zelda, Galaxy and Prime are it.
Nintendo would be on an unstoppable rampage if they just had some good games out for the system, what is the hold up? Nintendo used to saturate the market with good/great games, now there is hardly anything and one of their consoles is finally selling like gangbusters.
I just don’t get it. I don’t get why Nintendo/third parties aren’t releasing and why people are all over it when they know they won’t hardly have anything to play.
Ah well, more money for Nintendo means continuation of the franchises I love so I can’t complain.- xlar54, on 11/19/2007, -0/+5I wouldnt complain about this too much. Its because people were putting out trash games that caused the console gaming crash of the 80s. Nintendo had the brains to recover, and force the concept of licensed development. They dont want to tarnish their systems with crap games, so they are very selective. We have a Wii, and Im giving Nintendo time . The big hurdle they will have is finding ways to use the Wiimote in interesting ways. Id really hate to see the console end up going backwards to the usual controllers.
- ButchersBoy, on 11/19/2007, -0/+1Apart from the obvious big 3 (SMG is truly awesome) everyone should have Wario Ware - at least for the sight of your drunken grandmother gaming for the first time in her life at Christmas -, Mercury Meltdown Revolution is a cracking little game in the Super Monky Ball mould (but a definite improvement. I haven't Zack & Wiki but it seems to have some pretty good reviews.
- atomicpoet, on 11/19/2007, -0/+2Mercury Meltdown Revolution is the most underrated game out right now.
- skipdog172, on 11/19/2007, -0/+2It is popular because anybody can even just play some Wii sports and want to buy one immediately. That has been my experience at least!
- atomicpoet, on 11/19/2007, -0/+2It sells because the people who buy the Wii aren't stereotypical gamers. They aren't into Zelda, MP3, or SMG. They are into Cooking Mama, MySims, and Carnival Games. And you know what? If they think those games are fun, more power to them.
- Vanor, on 11/19/2007, -0/+0Not like there were a buch of stellar games for the NES, either. But once No More Heroes comes out and Monster Hunter 3, I'll be getting a Wii.
- ELCad, on 11/19/2007, -1/+9If Sony or MS made as many consoles as Nintendo has made Wiis per month then there would be no room left in any game store because of all the excess stock laying around.
- icsbase, on 11/19/2007, -0/+3In Finland, we have Wii's in store shelves. You can simply go and get one if there is a store near you that actually SELLS those... situation has been like this for like over a month now. Even price has dropped on some places from 269e to 249e. Perhaps it's already a christmas offer, or something but i know situation is not like this everywhere. Even i had to wait for my own Wii for 3 months before i got it back in spring.
PS: This console is a must get because of Super Mario Galaxy. - HRF1, on 11/19/2007, -0/+3If you walk into any store selling Nintendo products in Japan, you can walk out with a Wii without a problem. Maybe they are prioritizing Japan first?
- sremick, on 11/19/2007, -0/+3It's almost as if Nintendo had some sort of connection or relationship with Japan. Who would've thought!
- tyros8000, on 11/19/2007, -4/+11.8m is nothing worldwide. for god sake nintendo, get a grip!! people are now looking to buy a console for an xmas present and if it isn't in stock goodbye nintendo and hello xbox!
- chingy1788, on 11/19/2007, -2/+3some guy has 3 PS3s
another has 4
but I have yet to see a guy with 3 Wiis let alone 4- linzichan, on 11/19/2007, -0/+5Must...not...make....awful....pun....
- cowboy86, on 11/19/2007, -0/+1Maybe because you only need one.
- dilpil1, on 11/19/2007, -1/+1...well that proves it. PS3, and by extension you, win the console war.
- chingy1788, on 11/19/2007, -0/+2ahh no ones getting it
i must have phrased it badly
im saying
PS3 is so abundant that getting one, three or four is little effort (excluding money)
the Wii on the other and has such a high demand that getting 3 let alone 1 is a tough job- wentwj, on 11/19/2007, -0/+1If you've got the money to buy 4 PS3s you could buy 4 Wiis on Ebay.
The reason nobody's done it is because owning multiple of the same console is stupid.
- wentwj, on 11/19/2007, -0/+1If you've got the money to buy 4 PS3s you could buy 4 Wiis on Ebay.
- Naryuu, on 11/19/2007, -1/+1its all nintendo fanboys. mentioning sony anything gets you buried. dont worry about it :/
i like sony and nintendo. having both consoles is a good balance of serious gaming and casual fun with friends
- linzichan, on 11/19/2007, -0/+5Must...not...make....awful....pun....
- HiddenLYNX, on 11/19/2007, -0/+3I have walked into target on numerous occasions in the last few months to find 2-6 wiis in stock. I have stood contemplating the price tag. Damn camera lenses for costing so much more. Id probably say, with out trying, I've had maybe 6 opportunities to buy one. I've never found necessity, especially since my roommate has one.
- RezzedOut, on 11/19/2007, -0/+2"I tried to walk into Target, but I missed..."---MH
- skipdog172, on 11/19/2007, -0/+1Consider yourself lucky. You DO know that you can simply buy those Wiis and sell them on ebay for a $30-50 profit on EACH ONE? If you are bored and want to make extra money, JUMP ON THE WII TRAIN!
- dodgyd55, on 11/19/2007, -0/+1with demand So high im surprised they never started off with a slightly higher price cause it was guaranteed to sell big at stores
- wentwj, on 11/19/2007, -0/+1It wasn't guaranteed. A lot of people thought it was just pure gimmick (it most is, but it appeals to a wide audience), and wouldn't sell well. I bet they wish now they would ahve started at 300. However they can't RAISE the prices after launch, it'd be disastrous to their image.
- fLUx1337, on 11/19/2007, -1/+7Idea. Turn Sony factorys into Nintendo factorys, as Sony only needs to make 3 PS3s a day, they can have a small area in the corner.
Sorted, Wiis for everybody!! - indyGuy, on 11/19/2007, -0/+3Look on ebay - they're selling at nearly 1 PER MINUTE. Call your local retailer - they'll tell you when the next shipment is coming in and what time to be there. Look at all the asshats in line with you. I guarantee several of them will be turning a profit on ebay within hours.
- Khoji, on 11/19/2007, -0/+3There doesn't appear to be a Wii shortage here in Germany where I live -- all electronics stores now have ample supplies of Wiis. They are selling like hotcakes but they don't appear to be running out. All the shops I've visited recently have big stacks of them, at least as big as the stacks of XBox 360s. Maybe Nintendo has decided that it's time for the American market to take second place, for whatever reason... ;)
