LucasArts' Talks Wii Lightsaber Game - approved and in development!
gamasutra.com — The president of LucasArts and senior VP at Lucasfilm has expressed delight at the thought of a Wii lightsaber game by stating "we're all over that". He claims that they have already played such a game on the Wii and it's a lot of fun. He also added that the concept was in place and there'll be more information out this fall.

- Tserk, on 10/11/2007, -10/+4Is stabbing someone in Manhunt 2 any different then Lightsabering off someone's arm/leg/head in this game?
- hockey, on 10/11/2007, -1/+13The difference isn't just the stabbing. For one there's the blood (or the lack of it which is probably a given in the lightsaber game) and two there's the fact that after you chop of an appendage in the lightsaber game you probably won't be able to use your wiimote to grab their testicles and run them through with a chainsaw. . .
- NerdyNinja, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Yes. Because you have a lightsaber, not a sword or whatever. Jeez.
- xerus, on 10/11/2007, -2/+13That makes me wonder... why dont Jedi just force choke or force grab somebody's testicles rather than their throats? It seems like it would be 20 times more effective.

- acu8509, on 10/11/2007, -8/+3You want to use proper grammar.
You understand that apostrophes go after the "s" in a plural possessive noun.
Bring me a taco.- skinnytie, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Not in proper names they don't. I'd like a chalupa, please.
- crushfan, on 10/11/2007, -1/+0Hehe, nice one.
- skinnytie, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6As well, there are no plural possessive nouns in the headline. Neither a conjunction, which invalidates it as a sentence... The list, it just goes on and on...
- petemcfraser, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3"OOoooh if it's supposed to be possessive, it's just i-t-s, and if it's supposed to be a contraction, then it's i-t-apostrophe-s.... scallawag."

- Burguois, on 10/11/2007, -0/+22I wonder if it will be possible to hack off your own limbs. I hope so to stop the ridiculous ***** flailing that is going to occur.
A true Jedi is one with his weapon.- bjs3171, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3that would be a very good idea as an option you could turn on and off.
- Modizzle, on 10/11/2007, -7/+1Wait, instead of digging me down, answer or let someone answer whether the wii is even able to do this with a high level of accuracy.
- engarak, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Yes it can
- dunlop, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Just got the Wii, but it doesn't seem like it can handle "real time" swinging. The motion sensing is nice but I am doubting it can track people flailing wildly about with any degree of accuracy.
I hope I'm wrong, is there any game on the Wii that does anything similar to this?- bjs3171, on 10/11/2007, -1/+0i know this isn't exactly parallel, but in monkey ball the board moves at a perfect 1:1 ratio with your remote. if they can handle that i don't see why with some careful programming they couldn't simulate a sword movement.
- jedi924, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2The bat in Wii baseball is 1:1. You can swing it around like crazy and it keeps up with it.
- roneewong, on 10/11/2007, -3/+4they are only developing now? I mean, shouldn't a game like that have come out along with the Wii.
The first game I thought about when I heard about the wiimote was a Star Wars Lightsaber game for god sakes!!- crushfan, on 10/11/2007, -4/+3You're a god.
- agalis, on 10/11/2007, -4/+4Check this out. http://www.petitiononline.com/jedi_wii/petition.html It's a petition in order for the game to not suck. Well, at least they are concerned. I'm excited.
- likeus, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1Sweet, I hope they do develop it. The only thing that might be scary down the road is if they start creating controllers for game specific releases, that will be annoying.I see it coming for specific game titles. Cool post Halo thanks for Digging
- dheaddy, on 10/11/2007, -1/+32Meh, hokey religions and ancient weapons are no match for a good blaster at your side.
- CheckPlease, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5So, you're holding out for the Han Solo game?

- Vicujozobenaxod, on 10/11/2007, -7/+0Uh oh, somebody's a little butt hurt! Don't feel bad that Nintendo represents kiddies and the "adults-in-diapers" demographic, it's a good market!

(Skip to about 4 minutes in to where it gets good)
There had better be force moves as well...something similar to Jedi Knight/Jedi Academy would be awesome.- bjs3171, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0i hope the new game is not just jedi knight with a remote. that woudln't be 1:1 saber movements, and therefore would just be tacked on controls.
- c0ldfusi0n, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8This is when i wish the Wii would include a wireless Glove-like controller like the Nintendo had back in the days.
Imagine force-pushing your enemy with the thud of a hand! Or force-gripping his neck by emulating the movement, then throwing him away! Or using Mind Trick just by waving!- Miso117, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1That is actually an amazing effing idea.
Nintendo - Write that down! - texpundit, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6"This is when i wish the Wii would include a wireless Glove-like controller like the Nintendo had back in the days."
Dude... nunchuck. You could do a force push just like dealing with the grapple ray in Metroid Prime 3. Actually, I could see this game having a *very* similar control scheme.
- Miso117, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1That is actually an amazing effing idea.
- 1807, on 10/11/2007, -4/+1So...They made a Wii Light saber game? All, I can say is that it sure did take them long enough...people have only been talking about it since..I'd say the Wii's remote's conception. The thing is, you KNOW how they say when something sounds too good to be true it probably is? Well......
- DarKnight90, on 10/11/2007, -3/+2The force tells their gonna ***** it up.
- BIGBISON, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4NOW I AM GONNA HAVE TO GO BUY A WII! This would be too good to pass up!
- Nohj, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Don't get me wrong, it is a very good idea. But what's to stop people from just swinging around their saber like a madman? Couldn't that hurt the gameplay?
- Sparkster185, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3The same thing that stops people from button mashing in any other fighter. Unless you're Eddy Gordo, you can't win like that.
- bjs3171, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5as someone suggested already, make it possible to hack off your own limbs.
- joshboese, on 10/11/2007, -1/+13STAR WARS KID eagerly awaits the release.
- Goombellaofgoom, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Patience, young padawan. Your time will come.
- WalkerBurgin, on 10/11/2007, -0/+14This is what the Wii was made for. It is your destiny...
- ARob, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I was thinking this verbatim.
- Snuff99, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3They didn't say it'd be in first person...that's the way I'd wait it. I want to weld that bitch...hummm...hummm....
- punchinelli, on 10/11/2007, -0/+22As long as they make it motion-sensitive, instead of "swing it vertical, the character does a pre-defined lightsaber swing, slash horizontal, the character does a pre-defined lightsaber cut" Make it real-time, please! The lightsaber should follow where you move the Wiimote. That would be beyond badass......
- Tahiri, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4They cant do like the bat due to collision detection
- SteveMax, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1That would be a reason good enough for Bill Gates to get a Wii. A freestyle lightsaber game would be THE biggest console mover ever.
- daveisfera, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5He never stated that it was a direct mapping of motion in real life to motion in game, so I think that everyone is reading too much into the statements.
- Goombellaofgoom, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Yes, all he said was that they were making a Wii Star Wars game with lightsabers in it. Nothing more specific.
We'll probably have to wait until E3 for more details.
- Goombellaofgoom, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Yes, all he said was that they were making a Wii Star Wars game with lightsabers in it. Nothing more specific.
- hydroplane, on 10/11/2007, -1/+25The question is will Star Wars Kid be a playable character?
- chesscat, on 10/11/2007, -3/+0That's great news. Maybe now all the fat bastards will get out of their parent's basement and get some freakin' exercise for once.
- Goombellaofgoom, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1One out of two isn't bad...
- PhantomRogue, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10Sounds fun, but when you 'clash' swords with the other player. Yer motion is still going forward. How can you effectively parry and counter moves if you dont get the true movement of the lightsaber? I mean, if I block an attack or my attack gets blocked, kind of odd having my Onscreen Saber be totally off-kilter for where my hands actually are.
- ticklemeister, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Use the vibrate function for force feedback, when the saber clashes with an object (e.g. another saber), lock the saber position on-screen and continue the on-screen movement with a 'ghost' saber. The 'real' saber then moves once you move the ghost saber back into an area that the real saber can occupy. If the location you move the saber to doesn't relate to the current position of the 'real' saber (relative to the wiimote), then the 'real' saber moves on-screen to align with the location transmitted by the wiimote. Well, it makes sense to me anyway even if it is hard to describe the way I visualise it :)
- o0joshua0o, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Wow, you're a genius! (No sarcasm there)
- Fraff5, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Gentlemen... this is LucasArts. Let's not worry.
- ticklemeister, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0Well, I'd like not to worry, but there are a few reasons to be concerned. Firstly, like it or not but the Wii's main market is the so-called 'casual gamer' - this means that control schemes are generally dumbed down for the masses. Secondly, the quality of Lucasarts games can be a bit hit-and-miss - remember Force Commander (no I didn't think so ; ) Thirdly, a complex 1:1 control input method like the Wiimote takes a lot of time and resources to implement and fine-tune, given that an Autumn (Fall) release for this game has been hinted, I'm not sure enough time will have been spent on getting this kind of control method right - it would be very tempting from a dev point of view to approximate motions. What I am hoping though, is that the Lucasarts team have taken note of the reception of games like Red Steel, where the canned sword motions have been widely criticised. Also, I hope they understand how much gamers want the kind of freedom of control you get from a direct mapping of Wiimote movements to the on-screen action. There is the potential here to have one the greatest game experiences ever, or one of the most frustrating...

- brainboy77, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Oh, the horror! I was chasing someone when my controller went whack and just shot up everywhere. next second, i got blown to pieces while i shot up at ceiling. after that, i stopped playing and bought the DBZ game for the Wii.
- OwdenBowden, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1In related news William Asher president of Vivid Entertainment Group says that they will be launching a few new games for the Wii...
- StriferDiem, on 10/11/2007, -1/+0I'm sure it will be as quality as all other Star Wars games.
- Goombellaofgoom, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Which ones? Some Star Wars games are awesome, some are... not so good.
- grumpyrain, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Did anyone look at the Wii Remote and ever imagine that it would NOT be a Lightsaber in some game?

- jaej, on 10/11/2007, -1/+0What I don't get, and I think it was the same issue with red steel, is how to make the user think the blade is being stopped by another blade. Dilemma, lucasarts?
E3 was cancelled last year. - Beerduck, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1On the third day, Lucasarts announced a Wii lightsaber game, and there was joy.
Yes, this is as old as the stars themselves. OLD i say! - Sirhctopher, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1This better not be hype for lego star wars, or im gonna be pissed.
