- Smwbigboss, on 01/14/2008, -9/+118Playing Wii does not burn a signifigant amount of calories. The interactivity in games like Wii Sports is just meant to be fun and enhance gameplay. Wii fit can probably help for stretching, but that's about it.
Go get some actual exercise Fatty McFatfat. - Mellowman999, on 01/14/2008, -3/+48That is one out of shape mother *****, "I was sore all over from playing the Wii"? P.S.- I teach gym, do you wonder why your kid is a fat-ass? Other than the ***** you feed them I mean.
- lardoandkeg, on 01/14/2008, -7/+51haha. dugg for the headline.
- h4mx0r, on 01/14/2008, -1/+23DDR probably gets you more calories burned, except DDR is a little less dignifying.
- schavira, on 01/14/2008, -1/+18Male reproductive organs sure are funny!
- lololololol, on 01/14/2008, -0/+14My old high school now offers DDR in P.E.
- Scira, on 01/14/2008, -0/+12Capslock is cruise control for cool.
- redoctane, on 01/14/2008, -2/+13I'll take the balls.
- directive0, on 01/14/2008, -3/+13Well then you're just hopelessly rebellious aren't you? Gosh! You should just get a leather jacket and hang out down at the harbor.
- rainyman, on 01/14/2008, -3/+13Some people play Wii sports with the full motion of the sport. Doing so would burn more calories than flicking your wrist like a pussy.
- akatherder, on 01/14/2008, -0/+10Gasp it's a gateway console!
- inactive, on 01/14/2008, -0/+9I'll play with the balls. NO WAIT I MEAN THE WII OH GOD MY FACE
- serverdown, on 01/14/2008, -0/+9hopefully this will lead to kids playing actual sports
- MadTom, on 01/14/2008, -1/+10Agree, Yet I don't see how a person could seriously think to use the small amount of movement as an excuse for a workout.
- ryodoan, on 01/14/2008, -4/+12You must not have played the Wii with a large group of people... While only a small movement is required, you should see how 90% of people use the controllers, they act like they are swinging a tennis racket, they act like they are boxing, its pretty awesome... you need to get some real life friends to play with their wiis.
/Sorry, could not resist that last sentence, let the burying begin. - Akraz, on 01/14/2008, -2/+9D: maybe i Will!
- wbeavis, on 01/14/2008, -2/+8A Phys. Ed. teacher has a degree and experience to back him up, how about you?
- KloroFormd, on 01/14/2008, -1/+7And it's a helluvalot more fun that way.
- Dgen_X, on 01/14/2008, -0/+6so, you are the one person that liked that movie....I thought I'd never get a chance to meet you!
- Cutter20, on 01/14/2008, -2/+7You mean they didn't get really Billy Bob to hold the Wii in his Mr. Woodcock costume? What an astute observation. Are you some kind of detective?
- ledguitar, on 01/14/2008, -0/+5Read your comment before you post it.
- vibrokatana, on 01/14/2008, -7/+12buried: because the wii is not actual exercise
- LoveWidescreen, on 01/14/2008, -2/+7You and all of the other naysayers have obviously not played Wii Sports for substantial amounts of time.
When we first bought our, I'd spend three or four hours at a time with Wii Sports -- the gamer in me never being satisfied with the score that I just got. 48 hours later, I could barely move my arms because the shoulder muscles and upper arms were in pain.
Try playing several reps of Tennis in Wii Sports and actually going through all of the motions as though you were playing the game, complete with full arm strokes. Eventually, you'll even find yourself moving (or at least leaning) to the left and right even though there is absolutely no reason to do so. If I play Wii Tennis and allow myself to do complete swings, I start sweating after the third or fourth game. Everyone has this image of that lazy ass who was playing Wii Sports by laying on his couch and flicking his wrist. Frankly, he's a complete jackass.
No, the Wii can't replace the real thing. But if you play Wii Sports for any substantial length of time and you swing as though you were playing the real game I most definitely WILL get a respectable workout and perhaps even a good sweat going. Anyone who says otherwise is an ignorant fool who just wants yet another excuse to bash the Wii because it's not some powerhouse like the "oh-so-cool-you-re-not-really-a-gamer-unless-you-own-it" 360 or PS3. - Littleedgitt, on 01/14/2008, -0/+4I heard holding the shift key does too...
- Gogogo111, on 01/14/2008, -2/+6So basically, the Wii is selling well.
- sgtpppr, on 01/14/2008, -2/+6That might be the dumbest thing i've ever heard here.
- affanjam, on 01/14/2008, -0/+3I don't know maybe playing it since in came out
- akimbo, on 01/14/2008, -0/+3Thats the spirit!
- grumbel, on 01/14/2008, -0/+3For DDR you at least have to move a bit, Wii Sports can be done with flicking your wrist. Sport in schools should simply be about real sport, not video games.
- jasondragon, on 01/14/2008, -0/+3http://www.bmj.com/cgi/content/full/335/7633/1282
He has a degree, I guess he neglected to read this article perhaps? Small amount of subjects, but conclusion was that playing the real sport as opposed to the wii version burns more calories. Although if kids are sedentary, getting them to burn calories with wii sports would be better than playing a game without the active movements/controls I suppose. - soulpiercer7, on 01/14/2008, -0/+2the true calorie burn comes from using arm weights while playing Wii Sports Boxing. It doesn't sound like it, but holy crap that's tiring. I wouldn't advocate using this as your only excercise but it works pretty well.
DDR though burns some calories. holy crap. following that same line of thinking as before, get some weighted ankle bracelets and you got yourself one hell of a workout - freetyme, on 01/14/2008, -0/+2You might think this is bad but listen to my gym class story. I'm a sophmore in high school--yes a teenager on digg, the scum of the earth, the one who is ruining digg's community etc. etc.-- moving on. In gym class we had a bowling unit that included a plastic ball that couldn't have weighed more than 3 pounds (in fact it bounced when you rolled it) and super light-weight pins. All we did was "bowl" the whole class. I bowled for fun in a recreation league for four years when I was younger, back then I used a 14 pound ball. I couldn't help but think, "You know I could get just as much excercise playing Wii Sports Bowling with my mom what is the point of this. So this is not the only thing that is easy in at least some gym classes.
I'm happy to report though our next unit, Badmitton was harder. Stupid birdie. - LusikkaMage, on 01/14/2008, -0/+2Hopefully this doesn't get as much bad comments like the Dance Dance Revolution machines at school did. "They won't develop any social interaction! They'll just play the game and be isolated!"
- SLockhart, on 01/14/2008, -1/+3Buried for juvenile tittle.
- shakin, on 01/14/2008, -0/+2They should make a game where you strap a controller to each foot, then to move your character you actually have to run on the spot.
- aduzik, on 01/16/2008, -0/+1In the past 24 hours, I've played Wii and gone on a five mile run. One felt like a workout. One did not.
- wawilli, on 01/14/2008, -9/+10That picture was so shopped.
- LusikkaMage, on 01/16/2008, -0/+1DDR can be a real workout once you get to heavy.
But that might take a year or two. =p - UberCoolCam, on 01/15/2008, -0/+1Fail.
- topace3000, on 01/14/2008, -4/+5Fatty located.
- gansito87, on 01/14/2008, -3/+4Is Wii Sports the only ***** game for the Wii? Jesus Christ!
The kids are going to waste time whining about wanting to make Miis. - ferose333, on 01/14/2008, -1/+2Not likely, it will probably just get them addicted to Wii and possible other video games.
- djclay, on 01/14/2008, -0/+1Well, I believe that statement is a little oxymoron and answers itself. The PS3 is expensive, therefore fewer people purchase and creates surplus. The Wii is half the cost and seems pretty popular in the public's opinion and are purchased more rapidly, creating a shortage.
- AwsmGy, on 01/14/2008, -1/+2My guess is the gym teacher is some 500 pound fat ass that gets winded from waking up in the morning. No surprise he would get tired playing Wii.
- wawilli, on 01/14/2008, -1/+2wth?
- nightmare1228, on 01/14/2008, -0/+1While the kids play the wii, they will also be sitting in lounge chairs and drinking soda. Popcorn will also be supplied.
- Gravey9, on 01/14/2008, -0/+1dugg for the final line
- Mellowman999, on 01/17/2008, -0/+0Not a teacher *****, I was joking from that dudes point of view. But whatever.
- skaldicpoet9, on 01/15/2008, -0/+0Well, I think the point is that it is motivating kids who usually wouldn't be active in Gym class to get active and perhaps they will take a more vested interest in the activities displayed in the game.
- Itspeople, on 01/14/2008, -0/+0I think what a lot of people don't realize is that non-gaming adults try to play Wii sports like it's the real sport.
For example, instead of swinging a little bit in wii tennis, they swing the remote like they are actually playing tennis.
Or in bowling, where it looks like they are actually trying to bowl.
It's a lot more intensive if you play like that.
For kids...not so much. -
