- fishbeef33, on 07/15/2008, -5/+109I happen to be the kind of player who can sort of seamlessly shift from the more "hardcore" games to the casual ones. It's nice to have a variety so that I can have something when I want to kill things, or when I just want to chuck a frisbee (as I will apparently soon be able to do on my Wii.).
However, I think Nintendo made a serious error here. EVERYTHING they discussed was casual. The games are so light and airy that it's like eating nothing but marshmallows for dinner. It's a very odd strategy to completely alienate the gaming crowd that made you famous, just because you figured out how to get the gamers' moms to play too.
I was at the point where I was going to purchase an Xbox 360 to go along with my Wii. But if this is what Nintendo continues to do, and if they don't make serious use out of this new 1:1 wiimote attachment, I may consider getting rid of the wii. Or just let it collect dust like so many of my other old systems. - magnusbe, on 07/15/2008, -6/+74Extremely underwhelming from Nintendo.
- outToLunch, on 07/15/2008, -5/+70Maybe Animal Crossing will have a hardcore mode ...
- inactive, on 07/15/2008, -4/+55Didn't Reggie say earlier that there would be big announcements for core gamers? After the show G4 asked him about where the hardcore games like Kid Icarus were, he said 'how could you say that? Animal Crossing WAS for hardcore gamers' WTF?!!?! Clueless!
And WiiSpeak is their sorry excuse for voice chat? Reggie said on G4 that Nintendo feels that they don't believe gaming is a one-to-one experience. Reiterating that Friend Codes are here to stay.
That was the most embarrassing press conference EVER!
Did anything work right? The drummer's motions were way off, and when everyone played the Mario song together... so out of tune. And you play music why exactly? Is it even a game? - daftfunk1, on 07/16/2008, -4/+49As a life long Nintendo fan it was very hard to swallow what I witnessed today. Nintendo has truly abandoned its loyal fans. I will stand by Nintendo but I am still very unhappy with the direction the wii has drifted. I purchased over 15 wii games in 2007 and in 2008 I have given almost no attention to my wii and all of my attention to my ps3. I was very excited for the conference today and Nintendo was more than disappointing. I don't see Nintendo giving to the hardcore audience anytime soon, after all wii play sold over 13 million copies... best selling game this generation. It's a shame they created this new fan base. I loved my wii for the first year and now my mom plays it more than I do. What a ***** let down.
- Trifold, on 07/16/2008, -0/+44EXTREME FURNITURE COLLECTION!
- sobe86, on 07/16/2008, -6/+45Owning a Wii reminds me of when I was in college and used to go to drunken house parties. Sometimes you'd show up, and it would be a bit quiet; everyone's sitting down, not much is happening. You'd consider leaving; but everyone there would be like, 'nah man, just wait a bit, things are gonna kick off as soon as Lucy and her group get here'. Or 'just wait till Dave gets drunk, seriously, its gonna get crazy'. So you wait and wait for things to get started, but then they just don't. Anyway, I'm pretty sure I'm gonna bail on this party soon. I feel like I was duped into coming.
- ultimate_ed, on 07/16/2008, -4/+34It wasn't too long ago that Nintendo was being written off - that it would be shoved out of the market by Microsoft and Sony. Since the "hard core" gamers had apparently given up on Nintendo, Nintendo wisely found itself a new market. Judging by the numbers, it looks like they made the right move.
- mrelusive, on 07/16/2008, -0/+29Completing Animal Crossing on Nightmare unlocks the Hell difficulty.
- MasterPlayer, on 07/16/2008, -1/+27That Wii Music demo at Nintendo's conference was so embarrassing.
- inotocracy, on 07/16/2008, -2/+27Wii's future is casual? So was it's past. The Wii is casual.
- tizzleG, on 07/16/2008, -2/+27Stop ***** Reggie then.
- Borgcube636, on 07/16/2008, -1/+23Who's down for Links Ocarina Sing-Along?!?!!
- skipdog172, on 07/16/2008, -1/+19After playing super mario galaxy, I was really expecting there to be a lot more great games coming that used the same controller scheme. The nunchuck+wiimote IMHO works just as well as any controller. I cannot fathom how a controller, is in any way "better". I sure expected a lot more "kick-ass" games. Apparently graphics are all that matters anymore. I could care less about graphics. I guess I just expected more from game developers.
- phinn, on 07/16/2008, -0/+16This conference was absolutely terrible. The Wii has the most systems out there yet no one is making games for it? Glad I own a PS3, but the Wii is still a cool system. It's a shame. Oh well I can always use the Wii for all the emulators I have on it (Snex, Genesis, NES, Quake Wii, etc) cause the Wii Homebrew Channel makes it worth owning.
- mediaspree, on 07/16/2008, -0/+15To other games credit, Wii Play came with a wiimote, that was pretty much its only merit.
- Trifold, on 07/16/2008, -0/+14Think the Sims but everyone's an animal. Also you work for a raccoon who's an *****, and if you reset you get yelled at. That's basically about it.
- NeoCortex, on 07/16/2008, -0/+12Tom Nook tried to collect from the wrong guy. Now it's payback time. Take down Nook and the rest of his animal mafia organization in "Animal Crossing: Roadkill". Coming this fall from the first true partnership of Nintendo and Rockstar Games.
- Boohickey11, on 07/16/2008, -6/+18Are we forgetting that Nintendo usually has weak E3 appearances? They always ramp up for the Tokyo Game Show. It's where they introduced the WiiMote.
- dsmith78, on 07/16/2008, -0/+12Ill digg you up because its the truth but even for Nintendo this was weak. I was hoping for at least a confirmation on a new Zelda or Kid Icarus.
- NiGHTSChao, on 07/16/2008, -5/+17I hate ***** Reggie, he pulled the same ***** he did last time at E3, "OH WE HAVE THE MOST GAMES!!!" Yeah well 90% of those are either ports or ***** bargain bin games that no one has heard of
- lpferris, on 07/16/2008, -4/+16As a casual gamer myself, I appreciate what Nintendo is doing. I know I'm a Digg minority, but the thought of sitting down and playing any video game for more than 30 to 60 minutes is NOT appealing. I like Nintendo's Wii offerings because they let me sit down and play for a few minutes, then go back to what I was doing.
For some of you hardcore gamers though, perhaps your disdain over Nintendo's announcement will be quelled by this new game: http://tinyurl.com/2bxk85 - trdrstv, on 07/16/2008, -2/+13"That was the most embarrassing press conference EVER!"
Apparently, you missed the E3 where Nintendo showed off the GBA to Gamecube link cable, and Pacman as their big innovation. - inactive, on 07/16/2008, -2/+13Nah dude, the ps3 is like the rich kids party
- candafilm, on 07/16/2008, -2/+13Animal Crossing: Open Season?
- mogebier, on 07/16/2008, -2/+13If the "hardcore" gamers were really the best way to make money, then the Wii wouldn't be outselling the ***** out of the PS3 and the 360 all over the world, more than a year after it's launch. But it is. The DS too. Nintendo had found a forgotten niche that the other consoles pissed on - the casual gamer.
- KaiUno, on 07/16/2008, -1/+11Thing is, why can't they be both. I saw the entire presentation live yesterday and I was a little disappointed as well. I was hoping the Motion+ would get some sweet sweet Zelda loving when Shigeru got on stage, but he was doing the same thing as last time, fiddling around with tech-demos I don't really care for. This made the entire WWII shooter bit (Call of Duty was it) look rediculously out of place. Going from frisbee throwing to a puppy to flametorching germans seemed a bit off.
I want my hardcore fix. There was no 1st party showing at all. That was a kick in the face. More Samus, more Mario, more Link, more Pikmin! Heck, I'd even settle for Kid Icarus. (I know, it's way too soon for them to release another polished gem like Galaxy, Twilight Princess, Prime or Smah. They don't do a new one every year with a teeny tiny patch like Electronic Arts, but they could've shown something, even if it was only a pre-rendered trailer or just a slight hint.) - elpohl, on 07/16/2008, -10/+20No no no. With New Wii Sports & Wii Music, the Wii's future is *****. I mean, seriously. Both games look retarded.
/fanboy mode - NYCowboy, on 07/16/2008, -3/+13I think Nintendo is going in a direction that keeps most of us gamers scared as to what is going to happen with our favorite company. We all grew up playing NES and SNES so to see the wii targeting my Mom and Grandmother is kinda weird. But while Nintendo itself is looking beyond the normal niche or gamers many other companies have come in to fill the hole. look at No More Heroes, Fire Emblem, Okami, Dead Rising, and a hand full of other games that are targeted more to regular gamers. So while Nintendo might be producing the hardware we need to look at other developers to create the games.
Nintendo did mention they had their zelda working on new stuff
I don't think Nintendo ever wanted the wii to be the sole system. I think it was designed to compliment the other two. for hardcore gamers. - enclaved, on 07/16/2008, -3/+12And the PS3 should have come with a 1tb hd and whatever controller updates they've done. The original xbox should have come with a less gigantic controller and the specs of the 360, genesis should have come with 32x built in, and included a 72" HDTV with the price of the purchase and the original nintendo should have been super from the start and come with 1:1 motion sensing and a built in wifi, and give out blow jobs and have a built in screen.
Technology is progressive, get the ***** over it, every single one of you whiny ***** needs to shut the ***** up about it 'should have been done at launch'
Since you're going to eventually die, lets just assume that feature should have been implemented at birth and go jump off a ***** cliff to compensate for the delay in implementation. - erad222, on 07/16/2008, -1/+10The casual crowd is going to make them the most money. That's obviously what they want and probably need after suffering two generations of disappointment. Yes the Nintendo 64 and Gamecube were really fun systems but financially they didn't help Nintendo much at all. Had it not been for the Game Boy, Nintendo would have probably been in serious jeopardy. So they want more money, and there's nothing wrong with that. There's nothing wrong with trying to keep your company on top.
But Nintendo has to realize that they have another crowd that craves something new and exciting. This crowd can completely sway public opinion through the Internet if they are very unsatisfied. I'm not saying the Internet is going to effect what your Mom thinks of the Wii, but I think the anti-PS3 sentiment we saw at the launch is what has partially contributed to Sony's struggles with the PS3. It could just as easily happen to the Wii.
Nintendo, you've single handedly defeated Genesis, 3DO, Jaguar, and just about every other console that came out in the late 80s to early 90s. You appealed to the hardcore gamer AND had something for the casual crowd to chew on. Is it so hard for you to emulate that again? - AROERS, on 07/16/2008, -0/+8Fun enough to buy, not hard core enough to waste all your time inside. Win/Win in my book.
- Snuff99, on 07/16/2008, -5/+12It is not a shame they created this new fan base, it may have saved the entire industry. The videogame market HAS to grow because there are only so many hardcore gamer dollars out there.
It hurts me too man. But I see the bigger picture, this has to happen and it must be successful. Imagine if they only made movies for hardcore film junkies or only made music for Rap & Rock lovers. That would suck ballz but Hollywood & the Music industry expanded and videogames must do the same to survive. - ejhdigdug, on 07/16/2008, -3/+10Wii is saving the video game industry. If you don't attract the kids, then it will die with the adults. (Just like comic books)
- fishbeef33, on 07/16/2008, -0/+7But...the outdoors...is scary! And the sunlight burns!
- Coffeedemon, on 07/16/2008, -2/+9Has to grow? It was already outpacing most of the other entertainment industries (music and movies) dollar for dollar. Growth that only encompasses garbage that can be made for a minimum of effort and sold for a premium profit will lead us to another crash.
For your consideration I present the Atari 2600 and its Co-conspirator ET the Game. - NYCowboy, on 07/16/2008, -0/+7you play no more heroes?
- mlvassallo, on 07/16/2008, -3/+10All three had ***** showings.
- fani, on 07/16/2008, -5/+12*spoiler* - don't read if you like Nintendo. Just bury my rant.
Nintendo sold more systems on hype of shortage. Pretty much everyone I know was super hyped to buy the Nintendo and finally bought one just because it was cool to them.
Now, after getting their systems, a week later, it was done. Those folks are just not playing it anymore. There's no appeal after novelty wears off. Games look like crap compared to other systems. yes, some games are good but not most. They're asking me how they can play Fight Night Round 3 or Top Spin or Halo or Bioshock or Rainbow Six on the Wii. I'm at a loss to explain to them. They want the Xbox360 games. When they come over, all they do is talk about Xbox360 and play it. They don't care about the Wii anymore.
The console is underpowered for this gen. They cannot get good hardcore games as they will look pathetic. Even try a little bit more graphical goody and the wii will fail. see the spiderman game. I mean its good that Nintendo is alive and kicking and will last another round, but this E3 showed it has no ammunition. MS and Sony are launching ICBMs while Nintendo is chucking pebbles at them. Animal Crossing is their highlight ? Seriously ?
They shot themselves in the foot by targetting only 9 yr old girls who will go crazy for Nintendo now.
Ok. now bury me. Your blood is boiling and mine is calm now. - markross, on 07/16/2008, -1/+7Well I guess there's that lightsaber game that's supposedly coming.
- ejhdigdug, on 07/16/2008, -6/+12"...it sounds like something that Wiimote should have done at launch..."
Says it all right there. They should call it the "Wii Band-Aid" - Synn, on 07/16/2008, -3/+9Yeah, but for how long? Casuals get bored easily and move on. The hardcore does not. Nintendo maybe making a mistake here in the long run.
- Brew, on 07/16/2008, -4/+10I am a Nintendo fan from way back, And I have enjoyed their console offerings all they way up to the Wii. As a hardcore gamer, I feel completely alienated. I own a 360 and a Wii and the only reason I bought the Wii is because I am in college, and lets face it playing the Wii drunk with your buddies is classic. But the problem is when I am not drunk with my friends I have absolutely no desire to power on my Wii (contrastingly I play my 360 everyday). It just is not fun, the games feel archaic and stiff, and the killer app is the bundled Wii Sports. It doesn't help that 90 percent of the games for the Wii would best be suited with a classic controller.
- TVarmy, on 07/16/2008, -1/+7I liked Wii Sports because it was a fun way to get used to the controller and it was free. If the rumors are true that Wii Sports Resort costs $50, and if the add-on itself isn't under $20 and/or big games don't use it and it doesn't retroactively enhance sensitivity in older games, I'm not going to bother.
What Nintendo needs to do is make the controllers cheaper. Wii is an accessible system loved by everyone, but when I have pals over and they wanna play, they can't play it because I'm not going to spend 60 bucks a head to get everyone a controller and nunchuck. - erad222, on 07/16/2008, -0/+6To be fair, Kid Icarus has been MIA for a really long time.
- trdrstv, on 07/16/2008, -0/+6The hardcore games also have higher production costs and a shorter shelf life.
The profitability is HUGE on their "evergreen" titles like Brain Age, or Nintendogs. - inactive, on 07/16/2008, -0/+5I want to know if the Motion+ Wiimote add on will improve control in current games. Will it improve putting in the current Wii Sports?
- fishbeef33, on 07/16/2008, -1/+6Somehow the combination of the words "animal" and "hardcore" made me think of a very different kind of game, one that would end up in the Hentai section of your local GameStop (wait, what? GameStop doesn't HAVE a Hentai section?? Well, damn.).
- btgoss, on 07/16/2008, -1/+6I was not happy they didn't mention some sort of storage solution. I think we need this more then "hardcore" games. Maye something that could also help to up the memory available to the system so we can have a more functional browser.
Oh and more games where I can shoot things... - Snuff99, on 07/16/2008, -0/+5Nintendo made it clear before the Gamecubes death that they were not looking to directly compete with their competitors. They knew they'd make less money getting involved in the fray. Just look how Microsoft and Sony are ripping each others throats out and Nintendo skips gleefully by them both.
