- MrFettuccine, on 08/11/2008, -7/+35So it looks like the hardcore gamers will be screwed by Nintendo next generation too!
- omer209, on 08/11/2008, -5/+33Buried for misleading title :(
- svensksvamp, on 08/11/2008, -2/+29Wii 2 should have:
* Harddrive
* "Next-gen" graphics (what ever that is)
* Better online
* 1:1 motion thingy (wiimote plus built in)
* Less bad for the environment stuff
* Compability for Wii 1-games
* Ability to navigate through menus with Gamecube controller (daaah)
* Partygame-ban (automatically destroys your Carnival Games 2 disc)
That's about it - atomicpoet, on 08/10/2008, -9/+35The incentive is to be ahead of the curve. If Nintendo rests on its laurels, their competitors could be the ones who launce next generation's must-have product.
- Dozernotz, on 08/11/2008, -1/+20Totally. Except everytime I try to solder an SD card slot into my nephew my sister throws a fit.
- madcat033, on 08/11/2008, -3/+21Since when did "hardcore gamer" become synonymous with violence and gore? I got my first NES when I was a toddler and I've played most of the classic videogames on their initial release throughout the years.
And yet, somehow I find Nintendo's games to be fun. Was the super nintendo not for hardcore gamers? I think in that era most of the "hardcore" gamers played SNES. And they didn't need blood or gore or whatever, they were quite content with Super Mario World and Final Fantasy 6 and Chrono Trigger, etc. Give me a break.
Hardcore is not synonymous with gore. That is retarded. Don't get me wrong, I love gory games too, but they aren't all I play. I don't derive my masculinity through my choice of videogames. I enjoy slaughtering hookers in GTA IV as much as I enjoy planet jumping in Super Mario Galaxy.
And I don't think I want to be a "hardcore gamer" anyways. WTF does that mean? From what I've gathered on Digg, "hardcore gamers" are retarded 12 year olds who get way too excited about virtual violence for the sake of violence. And they think they are cool because they reach "general" status on Halo 3.
*****, all the Halo 3 players I know are the LEAST true gamers I've ever met. A bunch of my friends in college were addicted to Halo 3, and I was always bored out of my mind. It's like, their first system was an xbox 360 and it's the first time they've ever played a shooter before. They act like they are cool for playing Halo, like it's the greatest game ever. Meanwhile, I'm bored out of my mind. "yeah, i mean, this would be fun, if I hadn't played goldeneye, or counterstrike, or quake, or team fortress, or tribes, or any other similar FPS that I've been playing for over 10 years..." Oh, and when I mentioned getting Smash Bros. Brawl, they didn't want to play it. The kicker was, I told them it had sonic in it and they said "who's sonic?"
Hardcore gamers are just people who try to be "cool" playing "adult" videogames, which is "lame." - dzw120, on 08/11/2008, -3/+19Maybe it can, but where are you going to get the 1.21 jiggowatts you need to power it?
- Lancer383, on 08/11/2008, -3/+18I would love for someone to tell me with a straight face that they really think the next Nintendo system will interface directly with your brain - that's friggin' ridiculous.
- coheedcollapse, on 08/11/2008, -9/+23If the future is overhyped gimmicky controllers followed by a deluge of subpar remakes and trash games from everyone but Nintendo, probably.
I'd be really happy if Nintendo just went back to their classic controller and updated the internals of the next system to support current-gen games. As much as I like the games that use the Wiimote in an innovative fashion (Zack and Wiki, Boomblox, etc), almost all of the best games on the Wii totally skip over the use of the Wiimote or limit it to menu selection. It also sucks that many of the games that ARE fun with the Wiimote, I've played over and over in the past and already own other iterations of (Okami, RE4).
The sad thing is that now that Nintendo has discovered a veritable money-pit in the casual gaming market, I find it difficult to believe that they will go back to the original method. If they can make billions of dollars more by releasing a novelty control system that appeals to people who haven't played video games while cutting out hardware costs, they are going to do that for as long as they can handle it.
I just hope that the 360 and the PS3 don't follow that route next generation because developers have pretty much given up on the PC market and I don't want to be playing a bunch of games that look like what I'm playing on the consoles now but with wacky controllers next generation. - Merp08, on 08/11/2008, -4/+17There is NO excuse for their lack of online play. It's freaking 2008!
- daveisfera, on 08/10/2008, -11/+23This makes no sense. The Wii is still selling well, so what incentive is there for Nintendo to do something like this?
- inactive, on 08/11/2008, -1/+12it's a Back to the Future reference u tool.
- pocketveto, on 08/11/2008, -0/+10But how will I button mash if the controller's on my brain?
- ChairShot83, on 08/11/2008, -0/+9By the time Wii 2 is release, you can find this at any corner drug store but in 2008 it's a little hard to come by...
- erichw1504, on 08/11/2008, -1/+10As long as it's got decent storage space, graphics that at least match it's competition, more than a hand full of awesome games, and a little something new to the table then I'm sold.
- Yimyack, on 08/11/2008, -1/+10Maybe they should worry about delivering the first one before we contemplate the 2nd edition. I can't even find the first one in stores.
- Eezyville, on 08/11/2008, -1/+10madcat033, well ***** said
- SubjectiveC, on 08/11/2008, -1/+9How can I bury something as "stupid"?
- cesclaveria, on 08/11/2008, -4/+12people keep telling themselves that nintendo always mades the same games, but I think they are only superficially similar, for example:
Mario 64 is pretty different from Sunshine, and both of them share little things with Galaxy. They all have mario, princess peach and bowser, but the gameplay is pretty different.
Same goes with Zelda, although Twilight Princess felt a lot like Ocarina of Time (and there is nothing wrong with it) - trdrstv, on 08/11/2008, -0/+7Wii 2 should have:
I'll go with you on this with a few alterations.
Wii 2 should have:
* Larger integrated Storage. In general I think HDD's a re a bad idea, and am fine with the Solid State approach, but something in the 10's of Gigs by the time Wii2 comes out.
* At least 720p
* Integrated, unified, online system complete with system level VoIP support (like the 360 has, and the PS3 has yet to get), and since I'm talking crazy to begin with add in "Clan support". Something like what MS announced for "XBL Party" (to debut this fall) would work.
* 1:1 motion (wiimote plus built in) - Hopefully they'll do that this Gen. I'll buy a "Wiimote2" if it's integrated, even if it's longer and costs more.
* Less bad for the environment stuff - Not sure what you mean. Rechargeable batteries included? Only if they are user replaceable.
* Compability for Wii 1-games - Absolutely.
* System Level calibration tool for pointer functionality. Let me show the Wii, EXACTLY how big my TV is, and where the edges are, and throw in a tool (like there was in Zelda) that helps me center the sensor bar.
* Ability to navigate through menus with Gamecube controller (daaah) - I Love the GC controller over the "Classic controller", why don't they just offer a Wireless version of this?
* Partygame-ban (automatically destroys your Carnival Games 2 disc) - I feel your pain on this one, but the market dictates this. Make sure you buy "The Conduit" and "Madworld" this year to show your support for 3rd party Hard core games.
* an actual antialiasing chip in the system.
* I'd also take 802.11n support. - kalvinb, on 08/11/2008, -0/+7They need to maintain compatibility. One of the big reasons for buying a Wii was that it supported GameCube games and I can download classic games from the NES, SNES and N64 to play on it. After shelling out $250 for the system and a hundred in accessories it's nice to be able to get quality bargain bin games like all the original Super Mario Bros, Donkey Kong Country, etc. I don't have to continue pilaging my bank account just to have a decent game library.
I like the DS for the same reason; I can play the older games which are much cheaper to purchase. I can then wait for the new games to drop in price.
A boost in processor speed and an upgraded graphics chip should be possible without losing any of the current system abilities. - Coffeedemon, on 08/11/2008, -0/+7Call me a graphics whore if you will but they need to up the power of the GPU and CPU without a doubt. If not for shiny graphics then for calculations that will allow for even more immersive environments with great physical manipulations of the world.
Otherwise one of the other two is going to copy the controller. They already have the processing power and who knows how much power will be in the next iterations of them.
Maybe if the Wii2 has the processors of the current competitors or something similar - it might allow them to maintain the same price point as well as have perfectly suitable graphics/physics. - ricksite, on 08/11/2008, -0/+7Why do we even have to use the Gamecube controller in the first place? I wish I could play GC games with the Classic Controller.
- kd420, on 08/11/2008, -2/+8Whatever they do, they MUST put in better hardware, at least more storage. Lacking online play and DLC are terrible, especially for games like rock band. I think a Wii with better specs and maybe slightly better Wiimote is the way to go.
- fani, on 08/11/2008, -2/+7The next Wii will be called the Nintendo Pussy
- djpray2k, on 08/11/2008, -0/+5Dr. Emmett Brown: Marty, I'm sorry. But the only power source capable of generating 1.21 gigawatts of electricity is a bolt of lightning.
Marty McFly: [startled] What did you say?
Dr. Emmett Brown: A bolt of lighting. Unfortunately, you never know when or where it's ever gonna strike.
Marty McFly: We do now.
[hands Doc the "Save the Clock Tower" flyer] - SkippyDoorknob, on 08/11/2008, -7/+12If only I could get my Wii up to 88 miles per hour...
- zadadka, on 08/11/2008, -0/+5Ahem : manifold / many fold.
- spatty, on 08/11/2008, -0/+4they should use brain activity for the next Wii, but call it the "Wii: Crystal Skull"
- chaosblade77, on 08/12/2008, -0/+4Figures you'd be dugg down. The graphics are fine for SD. Not HD, but it's more than capable of good looking games if more developers would actually try to make something that looked half decent.
Besides, art style is more important than graphics anyway. - floejoe, on 08/11/2008, -0/+4The next Nintendo system will interface directly with your brain.
- fafnir314, on 08/11/2008, -2/+6Will tomorrow take us into the future?
- coheedcollapse, on 08/11/2008, -0/+4I don't know if that's sarcasm, but I'd say that paying $5 for a 20 year old game is still pillaging your bank account. Especially when you can go to a thrift store and pick up these "bargain bin" (your phrase not mine) games for 40 cents each. What I'd REALLY like to see Nintendo do is actually spend money on allowing us to play something that hasn't been played before. Pay out to the guys doing the Mother 3 translation and charge us $10 to play the damn thing. Now that's something I'd pay for.
Also, backwards compatibility is available on all consoles if you're thinking of it in that manner. There are plenty of classics on XBLA and PSN as well as tons of innovative new stuff. Also, both consoles play games of their previous iterations (although Xbox is incomplete emulation and the PS3 doesn't have that feature in the cheapest model.) - darkjolt, on 08/12/2008, -0/+3That's friggin' ridiculous!
- Darkangel754, on 08/11/2008, -0/+3I think that the only reason the wii doesn't get games like COD4, Bioshock, ect... is because of the lack in power, not developers not wanting to. It's a lot easier to port stuff to similar hardware.

"In the film's script the word "gigawatt" is spelled and pronounced "jigowatt"" - UnknownTarget, on 08/12/2008, -0/+3Wasn't there this same sort of stupid OMGNINTENDOLOLOLOLOL before the Wii came out? And then they threw away all the promise that the new system had when they decided to make ***** games for kids?
Seriously, I don't want to play Mario's Super Happy Adventure Land XIV. I want to play a ***** new game. Metroid was going in the right direction, it was something different and it really used the Wii's motion controls. And then that was it. ***** you Nintendo, you overhyped punk. - seavers, on 08/11/2008, -0/+3Nintendo likes their profit margins nice and fat. Wii's successor probably won't be very powerful hardware wise.
- V3NOM, on 08/11/2008, -0/+3They already have three cores in the 360. I could see the next Xbox having anywhere from five to seven, if not more. The first Core 2 Quads only came out in early 2007, but the 360 was packing three cores more than a year before that.
- mikephimikephi, on 08/11/2008, -0/+3Fortunately, within the next 2 years single-core chips will probably be relegated to mobile devices.
So it should be a forgone conclusion that the processing power of the Wii2 will be noticeably better,
especially in regard to AI and visuals.
I know Sony is committed to their whole '10 year lifespan' for PS3, but god only knows how many cell processors
the PS4 will be packing. I think Microsoft will have at least a quad-core machine in the next gen. - larryboymi, on 08/11/2008, -1/+4It *might* be a time machine though.
- wbowen05, on 08/11/2008, -0/+3Shocked no one mentioned this yet:

Hey it would not be the first time a concept of a failed Atari product worked:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wii_Balance_Board
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joyboard - alexforcefive, on 08/11/2008, -0/+3also less reliance on the wiimote. the best games (imo) have used the extra features sparingly and tastefully (think resident evil).
I'm not concerned at all, to be honest. Everyone knows what's good and bad about the Wii. The next nintendo console is going to take all that stuff and fix it, probably. I'd be very surprised if they have brain controlled games, that is a ridiculous idea for numerous reasons - pixelfox, on 08/11/2008, -4/+7Screw increased horsepower and brain interface, just give the kids more memory via SD and you'll sell that much more.
- volacide, on 08/12/2008, -0/+3I think everyone needs to slow the ***** down. I'm very fond of long console life cycles. I'm not ready for another XBOX or PlayStation or Nintendo console. Seriously, I hope these companies wait, there's absolutely no reason even Gears 3 shouldn't be on the 360.
There's still so damn much untapped potential in all the consoles, developers and game console companies alike have to start being more patient. It's starting to look like the PC hardware industry, and don't get me wrong, I have a kick ass gaming PC and love keeping up with things, but I don't want console gaming to become so similar to it. Keep it separate for a reason. - clickwir, on 08/11/2008, -0/+3Here's my list...
Wii 2 needs:
1) Better graphics. The jaggies in Wii Sports is awful. It really needs to be smoothed out, a LOT! HD 720/1080 output would help this, but it also needs 2x or 4x Anti aliasing.
2) Internal storage. Hard drives that would be more than big enough for a Wii are plenty affordable. I won't buy a 360 or PS3, but I want to play Rock Band, but without downloadable content, the actual list of songs that I want to play are able to be counted on one hand.
3) Wii Motion Plus built into the new Wii Remotes.
4) Backwards compatability for current Wii Remotes and hardware and also games.
5) More internal RAM/CPU.
6) DVD playback. Ummm.... why doesn't this already have it? Imagine the data they could silently collect on peoples movie watching habbits!
7) Community support. Let people mod it more. Don't try to hide things, open up. Let people run Linux on it, it will help move units if people can use the hardware for other things that just what you think they should use it for. Let me or the next guy come up with something to run on it.
8) Firefox > Opera. It's nice to have a webbrowser... but I really don't like the way Opera works. There's just some weird things with it, I avoid using the browser just beause it's weird and odd. I would just perfer Firefox on there.
9) MP3/OGG playback. Let me map the Wii to a Samba share and stream some party music. Hell, while at it, lets have the ability to stream some videos too! Divx/Xvid support would rock!
10) IM support. ALA Pidgin. I would use my Wii more if I could do a lot of the above functions. They would all get me to have my Wii on longer and have it more of the GOTO point rather than my computer. Another big one would be instant messaging. AIM/Jabber/MSN/Yahoo/etc etc. - Dustin00, on 08/11/2008, -0/+2Netflix on Xbox
Song downloads for GH and RB... hopefully for DDR games and others soon.
Mini/casual games from console online services.
Surfing the web/browsing YouTube videos (or trying to)
Wii needs a MUCH bigger hard drive. - tendonut, on 08/11/2008, -0/+2I agree with good games (which is has if you stay away from the party games) but good graphics? Come on, are you one of THOSE people?
I won't touch Crysis, but I love me some awesome Half-Life 2, and that is definitely last-gen. - greatblackowl, on 08/11/2008, -0/+2I think that there's the potential for great games to be made using the Wiimote. Mario Kart, for instance, is MADE by the remote, and from what I've heard (haven't played it) Metroid Prime is supposed to have the best console controls for a shooter ever. What game makers need to do is not make gimmicky controls. If you (a game developer) want a game with normal controls, the wiimote and nunchuk are perfectly capable of doing that (without having to resort to gimmickyness).
