- ursername180, on 11/04/2007, -19/+114I'm gonna call him Wiill Wright. Ahehhhehooohaha, hehe, aha... aww. :(
- KingGoonie, on 11/04/2007, -12/+77Not really... Next generation doenst necessarily mean horsepower and graphics... it can mean evolution or innovation.
Personally I take the simplest definition. Next-gen to me is the newest generation of consoles. Period. It literally is there next generation of systems... specs don't matter. - dunlop, on 11/03/2007, -43/+98Forget about the last gen graphic/processor for a second, but until they have anything resembling LIVE or PSN this system will not be Next Gen. Online integration is the future. They have inovated how controls will be done in the future which is good. Unfortunately because of their crazy success (I bought one due to the "OMFG the store has one" factor) the XBOX 720 or PS4 will probably be a "budget" machine aimed at the casual market so as a longtime gamer, this is VERY BAD.
- totorototoro, on 11/04/2007, -5/+58"But for him to say his 360 is collecting dust seems a bit much. "
Uh, dude. He said HIS 360 is collecting dust. Why do you have a problem with that? He didn't say YOUR 360 :p - Braingoo, on 11/03/2007, -31/+83Smart man and he is wright!
- N3k74r, on 10/27/2007, -3/+44IT'S CALLED CURRENT-GEN GOD DAMMIT
- sacherjj, on 11/05/2007, -5/+43So if a new car comes out that has 70 mpg, it isn't next generation because it doesn't have a 300+ hp Hemi? Innovation means more than raw horsepower in cars or video games.
- nakani, on 11/04/2007, -3/+38Can we stop throwing around the word "fanboy", already? It just makes you look childish. For god's sake, he's a GURU videogame developer, and obviously Wii/DS are the consoles that are really capturing his imagination right now.
- Paroparo, on 10/31/2007, -5/+39I guess this means we'll be seeing Spore on the Wii after all? =P
- rompom7, on 11/12/2007, -6/+35Nope, wrong. If we look at Nintendo (the original of the three big players in console development), we find the following trend. However, the only trend that can be discerned from looking at Microsoft and Sony's previous consoles, is that they are just adding more memory and speed, and not really innovating at all.
NES (innovation) -> SNES (upgrade) -> N64 (innovation) -> Gamecube (upgrade) -> Wii (innovation) -> ? (upgrade)
(also, realistic graphics don't make a game, look at team fortress 2 for example) - fognozzle, on 10/31/2007, -17/+46He's right. Wii is the only console that actually took a step forward other than a marginal improvement in graphics.
- Klarth, on 11/09/2007, -6/+34Stop dating fatties.
- kpaphysicist, on 11/02/2007, -1/+28Wii definitely needs to expand on its online compatibility. I thought wii sports was supposed to do something with it? It would be so awesome. Just think: Wii Bowling League every Monday night with your buds all across the world.
- hansonc, on 10/31/2007, -2/+24You're a college student you don't "work in the industry" you play video games in your dorm room. You want to work in the industry is what you meant.
What exactly is revolutionary about the 360 or PS3? They use the same control schemes as every previous generation and they have prettier graphics. Better graphics =/= "revolution" you have to make real changes to be revolutionary not just take baby steps in graphics.
The only argument you can make for revolutionary steps in the 360 and PS3 is the Bluray player but that doesn't really make games any better or change the way they're played. - KingBunny, on 10/27/2007, -7/+29"The Sims" was originally rejected by the games industry as "not following the formula"...
...It became the most popular game, ever.
I think I'll trust whatever this guy has to say. - Digibull, on 10/31/2007, -9/+29A console is made purely for entertainment, a game which kicks out state of the art visuals but with lacking game play isn't going to sell where as a game with addictive and decent gameplay but not so great visuals will still sell like hot cakes. The Wii is designed to support the latter and it is also delivering the game in a completely different way to how the 360 and PS3 are.
- xxeyes, on 10/31/2007, -1/+20I agree that online integration is the future, but I sure hope we don't loose split-screen in the process. I still enjoy gaming with my friends in the same room.
- Ashkc88, on 10/29/2007, -0/+19Metroid Prime 3, get it an you'll understand that the controls aren't just "wave my controller around."
Though, I understand that some people don't like to move that much while playing games. - BritishGolgo13, on 10/31/2007, -1/+20Designing houses is fun while listening to the ingame music on a lonely, lonely Friday night...
- asdfuiop, on 10/26/2007, -3/+21Queue spelling Nazis in 3... 2...
- nakani, on 10/27/2007, -3/+20Couldn't you have asked that question without prefacing yourself as a moron?
- BlueSkyfish, on 11/05/2007, -0/+17All of them are technically 7th generation consoles. I think the word you were looking for was "technologically"
Even then, what are the requirements for being next-gen technologically? - AXNJAXN, on 10/29/2007, -0/+17Cue Godwin's Law in 3... 2... 1...
- spawnfree, on 11/05/2007, -3/+19your one of those people who buys FIFA every year to see the new crowd animation or other superficial *****.
Thanks for helping drive the industry into a very pretty and detailed DEAD END. - KingGoonie, on 11/05/2007, -3/+19Brant... have you any idea what a generation is? Generation Y is different then Generation X because they are a different age group... not because they are technologically superior to them. The old generation of systems is over, 3 new systems came out, thats the new generation.
How about cracking open a dictionary and realizing what a generation is. You say its hardly an upgrade over GC? I would disagree... but lets use that arguement. If a 10 year old boy acts like a hippie, listens to 60's music only, wears tiedye, goes to protests against the government... hes still a damn 10 year old and therefore considered of the same generation as all other 10 year olds, not as part of the 60s generation. - Totalchaos02, on 10/31/2007, -1/+16@theaceoffire
No that would be an evolution in gaming, not a revolution. For it to be revolutionary it would have to be a completely new way to play the game. What you described was the next logical step. - willy3121, on 11/05/2007, -2/+17Apparently building a compact, quiet, reliable, affordable, energy efficient machine has nothing to do with technology if it doesn't have graphics that can burn your house down.
- rojano17, on 10/27/2007, -1/+15BUUURRRRRN
- Yoweigh, on 10/27/2007, -0/+13Who are these Nazis, what are they spelling, and why are we making them stand in a line?
- KingGoonie, on 10/29/2007, -7/+20Um no... its not a fad when its a better play experience then its competitors.
- fognozzle, on 10/29/2007, -6/+19MS didn't innovate anything, they copied what others had done on the PC for years and charge $50 for it.
- theaceoffire, on 11/03/2007, -5/+17Your argument is that it doesn't suck as much as the game cube?
- theaceoffire, on 10/31/2007, -6/+18Oh my god, you are so right... yep.
/tosses PS3 out.
I mean, why buy something for $400 when I can buy something for triple the price and have to replace in a year?
Thanks man, you fixed me right up. - zyklon, on 11/04/2007, -0/+12Exactly. Wright is more about hands-on stuff that you have to learn something new, versus "You know what to do" you get in most other consoles with almost all their games.
- bigbadgoat, on 10/29/2007, -10/+22what do you mean the PS3 doesn't have one fully? it senses motion and its used to control. Thats what motion sensing controls are. It doesnt have an IR unit on it, but that has nothing to do with motion sensing, and everything to do with orientation sensing.
- ELCad, on 10/27/2007, -1/+13get a maid
- Trendecide, on 10/27/2007, -1/+13Just because the Wii CAN wave it's controller around, doesn't mean that's all it's used for. My wife uses the controller quite stationary when playing games off of the Wii Console wheras my kids get a kick out of the boxing and bowling which damn near mimic the actions. The point of "waving your controller" is intuitive to get your lazy ass off the chair... it's not just waving into oblivion. A game that isn't intuitive with the controller clearly isn't going to be a very good game... but that isn't the console's fault. So yeah... I dugg you down :P
- inactive, on 10/27/2007, -6/+17Let me get this straight...you're calling Will Wright a "retard"? I'll listen to you when you've had the impact Will has had on gaming.
- spyrochaete, on 10/31/2007, -5/+16Wright isn't a typical gamer. After he designed The Sims he said that when he plays it he spends most of his time designing houses.
- dafragsta, on 10/27/2007, -1/+12Know what the most popular game was before The Sims? Deer Hunter. I'm not even kidding.
- RunnyBabbit, on 10/27/2007, -3/+14I'm pretty sure that's going to backfire on you, pal.
- pattherat, on 10/27/2007, -1/+12Me, I think I'll make up my own mind on what I like or consider next-gen, instead of listening to someone else tell me what I should...
- thewfirestarter, on 11/04/2007, -1/+11PS3 and 360 sales are exactly the same as the PS2 and original XBox sales, while the Wii is growing the market. I'd say he's right about it being next-gen in regards to it actually having something thats attracting new people. PS3/360 owners are simply buying an upgrade, or enterting the market at the same rate that people are leaving the market.
- saunders45, on 10/28/2007, -16/+26If it's the only "next-Gen" console, then give us some actual games, and include this crazy new feature called multiplayer. It's this new feature that lets you play with friends over the internet. I'm looking at you, Metroid Prime...
- inactive, on 10/27/2007, -3/+13First off it's not a marginal improvement in graphics, second it's a successor not a different console, the wii is not a successor to the gamecube, comparing the wii to the ps3/xbox360 is like comparing apples and oranges.
- inactive, on 10/27/2007, -0/+10The Sims was fine when released, but by now it should just be renamed to "The Expansion Packs".
- EtherGnat, on 11/04/2007, -1/+11"hehe I am so sick of this graphics over gameplay crap. You should expect BOTH"
Gameplay is a must, graphics are nice, but you left out one critical part of the equation: Price! Most people, particularly casual gamers, want an affordable console. Microsoft and Sony both sacrificed price (to some degree) for power. The Wii is a more affordable system, and many people seem to prefer that over having the latest graphics.
"He does not reflect the average gamer."
I think ti's a fallacy that there is anything close to an "average gamer". It seems to me the focus of the gaming community has narrowed to the point of excluding the casual gamer. Hardcore gamers want better graphics, more complex controls, and more involved gameplay, and there's nothing wrong with that. I think the industry followed them because they're the best customers, but they left legions of people behind. The Wii fills in the void left behind, which is a good thing. - aarik111, on 10/27/2007, -8/+18The wii is great. I can actually get my girlfriend to play video games with me..... and it's helping her lose weight!
- fognozzle, on 10/27/2007, -1/+10He's not saying it's great simply because it has a different controller. The Wii created a paradigm shift, not much unlike what he created with Sim City almost 20 years ago.
- inactive, on 10/27/2007, -0/+9Chris Hecker (also a Spore dev) - not Will Wright.
