- Tikkimann, on 10/11/2007, -4/+95I still think Nintendo needs to tighten up the graphics on level 3.
- MackPrime, on 10/11/2007, -3/+82i see very little difference.
- maduin, on 10/11/2007, -2/+79"Another game that had a lot of things changed was Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out. The game has been changed a lot and instead of Mike Tyson they have “Mr.Dream”. So, if they would go to all the trouble to re-program a game then why not go through the trouble of fixing up the graphics?"
There were two punch out games released for the NES. The VC version (featuring Mr. Dream) wasn't reprogrammed for the VC, that's just how Nintendo sold it on the NES after their contract with Mike Tyson ran out. - ryanonfire, on 10/11/2007, -4/+65i hate slippy
- grumbel, on 10/11/2007, -2/+59Complete ***** speculation without a hint of a proof. That N64 games run in 480p on the virtual console has been known ever since the first N64 game was released, this is nothing special, in fact its how basically all N64 emulators out there work, i.e. they don't emulate all low level aspects of the hardware, but try to capture higher level function calls and thus are able to render things at higher resolution and visual quality. So its clear that things end up looking a bit better. That however has nothing to do with game specific graphical improvements. It all happens at emulator level and is nothing new.
- Splitt3rxx, on 10/11/2007, -1/+56oh yeah, nothing like a low quality youtube video to compare graphics... well I can still see a difference, and I loved SF64 so I will probably download it.
- defectDS, on 10/11/2007, -0/+51Why the heck does he use youtube to compare specific details in graphics?
- arcadely, on 10/11/2007, -1/+28This article is really lame and inaccurate, this is a wild dream by a lamester.
Lamest obvious explanation - the difference in the video comes from N64 capture via 480i versus progressive capture from Wii.
Real explatnation. Nintendo is using N64 emulator from GameCube edition of N64 Zelda compilation (bonus disk for Wind Waker). This emulator got widely hacked on GC and used to load any other games there. Hacked GC model 001 with progressive output via component cables would look the same as Wii version so this would prove that Wii VC version is the same as original.
Now, let's assume they would have to improve the graphics. Let's take the first N64 emulator out there, UltraaHLE that used Voodoo/Glide video cards. It was able to output N64 games without some effects at higher resolution and different looking aliasing. Did it improve image on PC? Yes, as the monitor could output higher than NTSC resolution. Will it improve resolution on Wii? No, as it's only able to output 480p.
Let's assume that download size for N64 game would explode -- that would mean some of the textures got replaced. This was possible on PC with Rice plugin for N64 emulators that could replace textures (google Rice Video HiRez). But, it's highly unlikely, as filtering some of the textures makes other textures suck so they would have to replace whole modules of stuff.
Now, big N, you owe me money for consulting. - Aldhelm, on 10/11/2007, -2/+28They are trying to make a point about quality...... by showing videos in Youtube. It's not exactly known for good quality videos.
- xerus, on 10/11/2007, -0/+20Mr. Dream framed Tyson so he could get a spot in the game.
- samdu, on 10/11/2007, -0/+18I didn't see much difference, either. YouTube SUCKS for this kind of thing.
- crash331, on 10/11/2007, -4/+21Yeah, Nintendo totally reprogrammed Mike Tyson's Punch Out just for the Wii.
Or...it's a game called Punch Out that never had Tyson in it to begin with. - daridave, on 10/11/2007, -0/+17"Another game that had a lot of things changed was Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out. The game has been changed a lot and instead of Mike Tyson they have “Mr.Dream”."
He obviously doesn't know *****, if he thinks that's actually a VC mod... - liposome, on 10/11/2007, -1/+15Totally inaccurate and uninformed.
- aschocobo, on 10/11/2007, -1/+14yeah neither did i, but it may just be the quality of the video.
i know that if you compare super mario 64 to the virtual console version, the difference becomes a bit more clear.
http://pix.blakespot.com/view/computers/screenshots/SM64_N64vsWii/ - jamesey, on 10/11/2007, -3/+14actually, after mike tyson raped a woman, they took him out and put in mr. dream.
- nav1, on 10/11/2007, -0/+11I find this article really lame. It doesn't show any "revelations", just barely speculations. And if someone doesn't know that there were two versions of PunchOut for the NES, he shouldn't be posting Nintendo articles.
But N64 VC games indeed benefit from either the hardware or better emulation than the actual machine, I don't know. If you play Mario 64, the worlds load faster, and textures in all games look more detailed and the colors more bright. In any event, I doubt a Youtube video is the best way to notice this things. - specialK16, on 10/11/2007, -0/+11Still, YouTube really doesn't work for this.
- Skotlake, on 10/11/2007, -1/+11do a barrel roll!
- JEWestbrookJR, on 10/11/2007, -5/+15yawwwwwn big deal. why is this getting so many diggs?
- OwlFlavored, on 10/11/2007, -2/+11"But, another reason could be the fact that there isn’t exactly the largest library of games for the Nintendo 64, it wasn’t the most popular system in the world."
Hmm.
It was the #2 selling gaming system for it's generation, with a 40% market share (behind Playstation), and 396 titles. Many of the games have cult followings (Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, Smash Bros, Conker's Bad Fur Day, Donkey Kong 64, Killer Instinct Gold, Blast Corps, Majora's Mask, Banjo-Kazooie, Bomberman 64, Pilot Wings 64, Diddy Kong Racing, Paper Mario, Turok: Dinosaur Hunter, to name a few).
How does he figure? - nav1, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10No, It was mainly the contract that ran out. The whole raping thing just gave Nintendo less reasons to renew it.
- MatttK, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9I'm monkey food if I don't leave.
- ogore, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8get the one behind me
- dinostabOMG, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8This article raises an interesting question. It's too bad there are basically no conclusions on this site, and that it's pretty hard to see differences in video quality via youtube. "Shocking revelations?" buried as inaccurate.
- spiffyfitz, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8I got one!
- origin, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7Buried for being written by someone who either flunked out of, or is currently in, an American High School. As an avid gamer for well over 20 years (Favorite game at age 3? Pitfall on the Mattel Intellivision). I am offended by your apathetic, hands off "Fact Finding" style. Citing Youtube videos as proof of comparative graphics quality is laughable. Why don't you try critiquing music via two cans connected by a string? Please do the world a favor: Get off the net and go read a book. It's a better look for you. Trust me...
- Arramol, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7The only way I could see a difference was by clicking directly from one segment to the next. The water did look a little bluer, but other than that, the only difference I could see was that he had the wimpy green lasers in the second clip.
- Angmar, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Aquas was slow even in the original.
- Colony, on 10/11/2007, -2/+8That guy was a moron. The reason the game looks better is that the pre-expansion pak N64 games rendered in 320x240, while the Wii renders in 640x480, or 853x480. That's the only reason.
- Dgen_X, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6exactly...I love embedded video as much as the next guy...but videogame videos/trailers (especially games that will be played in HD) should not be youtube quality
- slunktoday, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Buried. YouTube sucks to show graphics differences, and there's no information other than speculation
- voidx, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5http://duggmirror.com/nintendo_wii/Wii_s_Virtual_Console_With_secret_improvements/
- MrSidnet, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5rorrim
- AssProphet, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5I've noticed that the water level Aquas the game is horribly slow, and multiplayer is lagged too. It seems like it's really taxing the emulator.
- khellendros1984, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4GBA was 2d rasterized graphics. 3d models are vector-based, that is, they are mathematically defined polygons rather than set, pixel-by-pixel images. Something like the n64's 3d graphics can be calculated at higher resolution (although the textures will look blurrier). Something like the GBA (or a DVD movie being upscaled) gains a more limited improvement since the extra data doesn't exist in the image.
- cambob76, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4"Aim for the open spot!". That's what she said.
- TychoQuad, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4That is the most stupid article I have ever read, and that's saying something. There is not some huge conspiracy from Nintendo to beef up old N64 game graphics, and emulation is far from "easy" The only reason why there is so few N64 games is this. Money. That is also the reason why some of the older games (He mentioned Kid Icarus and Punch Out) have been modified. N64 games are probably the most sought after on the VC because they are the most modern, and withholding them makes you consider the other titles available, including N64 games you probably already own or never would have purchased otherwise. As for Kid and PO, they were changed because of unique hardware in the cart and licensing issues respectively. No mystery, just common sense.
- origin, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Yes I was harsh, but only to call attention to how someone with a basically invalid opinion and incredibly poor language and reporting skills can put a shiny boarder around text with a hip font and get hundreds of people to take them seriously. Drivel like this makes the internet less useful IMO.
- rabidsnail, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4I would expect the graphics of the virtual console version to be better because it's using the wii's gpu. The n64 has a coprocessor (like nearly all consoles and modern PCs) that takes vertex commands from the main processor and converts them to pixels, which are sent to the screen. A decent n64 emulator (which virtual console is) takes those commands, converts them into whatever format the modern gpu wants, and has it render them. Since modern gpus are much higher resolution and are more sophisticated (having features like ant-aliasing), the graphics in the emulator look better. This is why n64 games look so much better in Project64. It uses DirectX to render the vertices, with anti-aliasing running at your computer's native resolution.
- petard, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4No, that is not how emulation works. It wouldn't be called emulation if it were recompiled.
The Wii is emulating the N64/NES/SNES and whatever else they have. Nintendo just takes the image of the cartridge, wraps it in DRM, and sells it.
They do not modify it.
What they COULD modify is the virtual console to make it run some games better. - DarthBrady, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4People should really stop digging this one.
The only reason it looks better is the emulation running on stronger hardware. All the better graphics you see on VC exist in the original game carts. Its just that the N64 couldn't render those great textures without using a low level anisotropic filter without getting any better than 25-30 FPS at best. Just take one the same old version ROM and play it on Project 64 or 1964, and crank up the anisotropic and anti-aliasing and see for yourself.
Although I must say, I still downloaded for the wii and I'm glad I did. just too bad Nintendo had to screw us out of rumble support.... - scabbers, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3It's a bit more than running it through a filter. The virtual console is probably rendering the textures internally at a much higher resolution than the n64 could, as well as applying filtering techniques to them.
- Psykus2, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Looks the same to me, just slightly darker.
Here's a direct link to the Youtube video shownin the article (since the site is dead now):

- nav1, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5Damn you, new comment system.
- revidium, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4I love all the facts in that article.
- ThinkBox, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3yeah, for Irony I'd hope they were Jpegs
- sneakerelph, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3"so now, someone has to go thru all that code and change it."
Not necessarily true. Have you ever used an N64 Emulator on PC? All the games you can download for them are not remade for the PC.
"I don't know if they use some kind of interpreter that takes the raw N64 code and spits out VC code automatically"
That's what emulation is. - warplayer, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2This article is really pointless, it is purely a hardware boon. Regardless, the fact that it is being dugg this much should show Nintendo how much of a demand there is for N64 on the VC. I personally have bought all 64 roms on there except for Ocarina because I still own my GC Wind Waker bonus disc of Ocarina plus Master Quest. Popping that baby in my Wii makes my Wii love me.
Oh, and hey let's all start calling the Virtual Console games by what they are: ROMs. Just like an emulator uses, we are just buying them with digital manuals from Nintendo. -
