- GroundIsSound, on 03/25/2009, -2/+66It only took 3 years!
- DKII, on 03/25/2009, -5/+52Wow 32GB, that's more than most 360's out there have! ;)
- iateyourpie, on 03/25/2009, -1/+43Finally! I actually like this way of memory instead of having to buy a huge external hardrive, I can just save what I need on a SD card, and use it like a memory card. I'm content.
- Splutterbug, on 03/25/2009, -1/+34and SDHC cards up to 32GB are supported :-) may actually give me an excuse to upgrade
- chaosblade77, on 03/25/2009, -1/+26SDHC was the only surprise here (the solution was announced last year).
Anything over 8GB is overkill though since the maximum filesize limit for a Wiiware game is 40MB (and few N64 games were bigger than that as well). With an 8GB card you will run out of channels before you run out of space unless that limit changes. - inactive, on 03/25/2009, -1/+24It's good that Nintendo realized that the Wii's limited flash memory was preventing people from buying more games from the Shop Channel.
- michelsonmorley, on 03/25/2009, -1/+17You'd think they would've implemented it earlier. I stopped downloading Wiiware/VC games a year ago simply because I had to delete a game every time I got a new one.
- UnaClocker, on 03/26/2009, -1/+16At the moment. But so did the 32meg cards at one point.
- SkippyDoorknob, on 03/25/2009, -1/+16I think they were caught off guard by the success of the Virtual Console and wasn't originally expecting people to start running out of space.
- iateyourpie, on 03/25/2009, -2/+16Better late than never.
- Maynza, on 03/25/2009, -4/+18THIS IS THE GREATEST THING SINCE CUT AND PASTE!
/s - LoveWidescreen, on 03/26/2009, -2/+16o_0 Hold *****! I never thought about that. Even people who took advantage of the 360 Arcade upgrade only had the option of a 20 GB hard drive. That's really weird to think that the Wii can have a bigger "hard drive" than a lot of 360s.
- inactive, on 03/25/2009, -0/+14You're a little late to the show there buddy, There's already been hacking/free wiiware - though if you haven't hacked your Wii yet, it looks like this new update makes it a little trickier.
- barc0001, on 03/26/2009, -1/+14That's still in the same ballpark for what MS is charging for a 20GB hard drive for the 360. $119 for 20GB, $150 for 32GB. Similar.
- zeebo, on 03/26/2009, -1/+12Yeah, but 16gig cards are significantly cheaper.
- inactive, on 03/25/2009, -1/+12Not if someone developed a decent media player for the Wii. I mean, there are homebrew media players out there, but for some reason they have trouble with some movie files. Hell, Nintendo oughta release a media player channel, come to think of it.
- SkippyDoorknob, on 03/25/2009, -0/+11I don't see how this makes anything easier. The VC/WiiWare downloads are already tied to the console they were purchased from. Even before if you copied them to an SD card and took them to another Wii, you couldn't play them. I don't see this new system being any different in that regard.
- TheBlueVulcan, on 03/25/2009, -1/+12That's the limit now, let's not forget XBLA also had a 50MB limit for over a year. With this new storage solution, odds are file sizes will increase.
- laserpilot, on 03/25/2009, -3/+13let the hacking/free wiiware games commence!
- DJMattB241, on 03/26/2009, -0/+1016Gb SD card = $30. You'll be fine with that.
- inactive, on 03/25/2009, -0/+9But 2 1/2 years of testing? For one single, simple feature?
- tgrokz, on 03/25/2009, -1/+9for those of you with the homebrew channel installed, you can update to 4.0 without losing the HBC. you can't, however, run the twilight hack with 4.0 yet, making installation of the HBC impossible (for now). also, as long as you have the proper cIOS files installed, you can still install WADs and keep your backup launcher (if you have it). it's still not recommended that you update yet, as there are some problems with VC and wiiware games installed through the WAD manager. some are reporting that they no longer work.
some forums say these problems should be fixed in a few days - LogitechG15, on 03/26/2009, -0/+8Thankfully the fine folks at Nintendo have entered the world of modern console technology. Now just get rid of friend codes and the Wii may be even better!
- allisonaxe, on 03/26/2009, -0/+7maybe some people are just honest? I mean, I have an R4, and i still buy DS games, because i want to support the developers and I enjoy having a hard copy.
- KirbyMeister, on 03/26/2009, -1/+8The Wii's software architecture wasn't designed for substantial updates. Note how games don't actually run off the SD card but simply get copied to the Wii flash chip; this is because games have exclusive control over the SD card (the game is where the FAT fs driver is stored) by the way the IOS/Game interface is defined.
- DJMattB241, on 03/26/2009, -0/+7Unless I'm doing the math wrong, 12 channels per page * 20 pages * 40mb = 9600mb
So... 16 would be overkill, but not 8. :) - SkippyDoorknob, on 03/25/2009, -1/+8Don't underestimate the amount of testing needed for something like this. They want it to work for everyone and not suddenly kill a bunch of consoles or break existing SD card functionality.
- Acqua206, on 03/26/2009, -0/+6? I read 32. You should RTFA.
- zeebo, on 03/26/2009, -0/+6What could you put on it from the wii that would actually fill up that amount of space? 16gig cards can be had for ~$30. That's probably good enough for anything Nintendo decides to throw at us.
- MacHarborGuy, on 03/26/2009, -1/+7it already did. the hackers discovered, SHOCK, that it was just a ROM file anyway with some additional files for instructions and such,
- LostOverThere, on 03/26/2009, -2/+8No one ever congratulates Nintendo when they do something well.
Good Work Ninty. :) - inactive, on 03/25/2009, -0/+6Easier? How?
- Albaster, on 03/25/2009, -2/+8Actually, the biggest surprise (at least for me) has been the SD Card channel addition which, at least from the articles I have read on the issue, hadn't been mentioned at all before.
Until today, I thought that they were just going to allow you to download content from the Wiishop directly into your SD card, but you'd still have to copy such content to the internal memory of your Wii in order to play it.
SDHC was kind of a no-brainer for Nintendo to include it at last, given that the Homebrew scene has been adding support for it since a long time ago already... - LoveWidescreen, on 03/26/2009, -1/+7Huh? According to people on Destructoid, they were able to move their games over to an SD/SDHC card but the *save game* file has to be left on the console intself.
- jeremymccurdy, on 03/26/2009, -3/+9Too bad a 32GB card costs about $150.
- bcassner, on 03/26/2009, -1/+7Awesome news. My kids like the Wii for the new games, some of which are really fun, but I mostly use it to download all the old games.
- smoger, on 03/26/2009, -0/+5agree with allisonaxe and blaycor.
i too own an R4 and NEVER have i put a commercial rom on it(though I may put some roms of games i ALREADY OWN on it the next time i travel). i own more DS games than any other console i own.
i also have homebrew running on Wii.. i use it to play emulated games that I already actually own, or in some cases, games that i would like to buy that aren't available on the VC or at retail.
ive also installed a WiiWare game.. Dr. Mario.. that was only because it wasnt yet available in the US. when it became available here, I deleted the pirate copy, and purchased the proper one.
it doesnt make you "cool" or "smart" to pirate software. it just makes you dishonest. and kind of a douchebag - inactive, on 03/25/2009, -2/+7This is all well and good, but oh my ***** God, now I have to go and redownload half of my VC/Wiiware library. Why couldn't they just do this from the start so we could've avoided the whole "constantly juggling things around, especially when you want to get a new game" thing.
- maduin, on 03/26/2009, -0/+5well, consider the fact that an standard SD card has a read rate of 3MB/s, or less, they're doing the right thing. Unless you want them to make a standardized Wii SD card that has a faster read rate, which means they'll charge you extra for it, this is the best solution they have at the moment, and it's not that bad at all. I have a hacked Wii as well, homebrew channel installed, custom channels, starfall, cIOS, and I install the updated from 3.2U to 4.0U without a hitch. I can now finally redownload the 200 dollars worth of VC and WiiWare titles I have and have them instantly accessible without having re-download them ever again, or having to using wadmanager to install a game.
your loss. - EtherGnat, on 03/26/2009, -0/+5Your math is right, but not every game is going to be anywhere close to 40MB.
- liquisoft, on 03/25/2009, -0/+5It's about damn time. What took so freaking long?
- Albaster, on 03/26/2009, -0/+4@macweirdo42
When it was first announced that Nintendo was working on a storage solution for the Wii, all it was mentioned was that you were going to be able to download games directly to your SD card, but nothing about an SD Channel was talked. I just followed the news about it during the first couple weeks, but seeing how Nintendo was taking its time to implement it, I just shrugged it off, forgot about it, and hadn't checked any fresher news on the matter until today. - STKD, on 03/26/2009, -0/+4"They" have had "something completely different" for a long time. Still, don't count out the Twilight Hack yet.
- inactive, on 03/26/2009, -0/+4I suspect it has something to do with their solution to the Twilight Hack - just prevent save game files from being transferred from the SD card.
- PhoenixAvatar2, on 03/26/2009, -2/+6FYI: This doesn't work for Rock Band or Guitar Hero. The two games that could use it the most.
- blaydcor, on 03/26/2009, -0/+4I never know whether to be disgusted or amused when people think they're smart/special/clever because, unlike honest people, they pirate their games. Wait, actually I do: I'm disgusted.
IT'S NOT HARD TO PIRATE GAMES, we just choose to support the developers, ESPECIALLY Wiiware where oftentimes the games are shoe string budget indie games. - smoger, on 03/26/2009, -0/+3also remember there are TurboGrafx CD games on there.. they have to be in the hundreds of mb right? dont most of them have cd-quality audio?
but then again,.. NES games are like 80kb so all in all im sure it would even out for most users
davidjunit: if you're a neo geo fan, you should probably check out the various disc based collections on the Wii.. theres a general Neo Geo one, a Metal Slug one, and I believe a Fatal Fury(or all fighting series) one. they're all like 20-30 bucks each.. much cheaper than buying them all on VC - dvd101x, on 03/26/2009, -0/+3you mean SDHC?
Iwata said that it's up to 32 GB - graemee, on 03/26/2009, -0/+3@barc0001 - No, While they are too expensive they are not that much. A refurbed 20GB is $30.00 while a 120GB is about $120.00
An 8GB SD card is $19.99 and you can buy a few for the price of a 32. - ofenza, on 03/26/2009, -0/+3Still missing some Mega Drive games on virtual console. Where's Strider; Road Rash and Micro Machines?
