- NikoKun, on 10/11/2007, -3/+58Although the fitness idea is useful... I'm actually more interested to see what other uses this new device can have... say in a 3rd party game or combined with the wiimote in game... Imagine the added immersion that might provide, when the game knows how your balanced and the extra control that might provide. We'll have to see what the future holds, as it comes...
- PhoenixAvatar2, on 10/11/2007, -5/+56There's potential, but I have a feeling that Nintendo's going to suffer from accessory-itis again. Zelda Four Swords was great when played four-player, but almost no one was ever able to do it because it required four GBAs and four link cables. Then there was the modems, the microphones, the rumble/save packs. Unless Nintendo does some serious packing in with multiple games, most of these addons are barely going to be used.
- Rockout, on 10/11/2007, -9/+51If I wanted to get fit I'd put down the Doritos and actually go outside.
- Bodhesatva, on 10/11/2007, -3/+35It's funny, I remember the days when everyone wanted all the non-gamers to come and play. You know, play games with your girlfriend, or what have you.
Apparently, what they really meant is that they want their girlfriends to play God of War or Killzone with them. Now that it's clear that "bringing in the non gamers" means making games like Nintendogs, Wii Sports and Wii Fit, they're suddenly pissed that they're sharing this space.
Look, adults, as a general rule, are never, EVER going to want to play a game called "Killzone." Even forgetting gameplay for a second, could that name possibly scream "testosterone driven teenage male fantasy" more? No, it could not, and it's only one example -- a symbol -- of the types of games we play. We are not going to get adults and women to play games with this stuff, period.
If we're going to actually include people -- and I hope we can agree that including people who aren't 20 year old males is a good thing -- then we need to make games that don't focus entirely on guns, swords, or cars.
Shooting, slicing, killing, and racing. Guns, swords, and cars, guns swords and cars, guns swords and cars, over and over again. These are the typical young-male toys, and I want you to think, just for a second, how few games there are on the PS3/360 that don't have some combination of those three things -- guns, swords, and cars. - dralezero, on 10/11/2007, -0/+28Maybe you could turn it sideways for a snowboarding/skateboarding game.
- gungaroo22, on 10/11/2007, -1/+19Donkey Konga Bongos, anyone?
- cyberdependent, on 10/11/2007, -0/+18All I know is that when I got home last night, my WIFE wanted to tell *ME* about WiiFit because apparently her and her friends were psyched as hell about it and had been gossiping about it all day. "Maybe it can help me with my tree pose" she wondered aloud watching the yogic examples on the web.
Think about that, my wife, who usually can't be bothered with anything game related, had apparently somehow found out about and gotten excited about WiiFit on the very day it was announced. - She wanted to spill to me about what happened at this year's E3 as opposed to every year in the past where the flow went the other way. (usually to deaf ears)
This is why Nintendo is running away with the market this gen. - walkingdogs, on 10/11/2007, -1/+15Try SSX Blur, Godfather Blackhand Edition, Excite Truck, Tiger Woods, Super Paper Mario, Madden 07, Raving Rabbids, Wario Ware. These are ALL solid titles that use the wiimote very well and go to show that the future of the wii is bright. The few flaws that these games have should be worked out by the next iterations but they certainly don't take away from the first attempts to incorporate new control schemes to traditional games and make for very different gaming experiences.
As for Wii fit, I know you so called "hard core gamers" don't get or like what nintendo is trying to do but this is why the Wii has been sold out everywhere for 33 weeks and will continue to be. Nintendo is the one company that though outside the box with this generation of consoles. They bucked the trend of competing and playing the more power with no new gameplay trend. They decided to try something new and change the interaction with games and hit the nail on the head. So many of you call the Wii a gimmick but it no more so a gimmick than adding an analog stick was or shoulder buttons, or rumble. Besides, over 8 million consoles in 6 months shows it much more than a gimmick and that the vast majority of consumers could care less about the graphics race and value fun and bang for the buck over HD graphics. And maybe that's why the least powerful console each generation has come out the winner of said generation. And finally, if the wii is truly a gimmick then why did Sony add motion controls to create the sixaxis and why is microsoft trying to develop motion controls for the xbox 360? - coheedcollapse, on 10/11/2007, -14/+28Wii needs to stop relying on god damn gimmicks and come out with some good, solid games like Nintendo have always been known for. I love my Wii, but there is a serious lack of good games (consult metacritic if you disagree).
- astrobrights, on 10/11/2007, -5/+19I think it's great what Nintendo is doing. They are always finding ways to capture an audience that the other consoles are not concerned with and rightfully so. I try to not compare the Wii to the 360 or PS3, because it's a different kind of system for different kinds of gamers.
- gungaroo22, on 10/11/2007, -2/+15Um, according to *BREAKING* scientific research - everyone needs exercise.
Is there a larger sect of people they should be targeting? "Everyone" is a pretty good audience for Nintendo to target. - Mlasky, on 10/11/2007, -3/+16You could always... not buy it perhaps?
- eatmyshorts, on 10/11/2007, -1/+14You know, with a name like "Fit", I think they *are* marketing it as workout equipment. Nintendo isn't trying to market it otherwise. It is a fitness device that is intended to make working out more fun. But, with a name like "Fit", I think they know exactly what it is, and are marketing it accurately.
- kravex, on 10/11/2007, -0/+12Brain-Age game's showed that people who come back the next day to beat the score they were given (a major driving force behind playing most games), combining that with exercise is a master stroke as not everyone can afford a personal trainer to keep telling us to do better.
- peacebyanymeans, on 10/11/2007, -1/+13Then don't play this game.
- munzer321, on 10/11/2007, -4/+16My wife can't take our 5 month old baby to the gym. Enter Wii-fit! The perfect solution for those who can't access/afford the gym. It surely has a place in our unfit society. And let's face it, not all gamers regularly attend the gym to 'bulk up'. Anyone disagree?
- bnl771, on 10/11/2007, -0/+11You must not live in Texas. Sometimes it's too hot when I get out of work and if I wait till the sun goes down, I'm useless. It would be great to come home and jump right into this in the comfort of my air conditioned home. Plus then I would have energy to take a walk after it cools off.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10Well then they're just cheating themselves by spending $60+ on a fitness game and then not doing it properly. That's about as smart as paying for a gym membership and standing there watching everyone else work out... what's the point? Wii Fit isn't really a "game" so much as an exercise program, so I see little incentive for anyone to "cheat" when they'd only be screwing themselves over.
- richpav, on 10/11/2007, -4/+13Let me take a wild guess--you're not married. Or maybe you're married but not to a woman who loathes and detests video games, and seethes every time she discovers you geek bonding with the kids in front of the TV. The way I see it, if there's an uber-lame yoga "game" available for the WII, then there's at least a slight chance I might be able to by one without my wife coming totally unspooled.
Man, imagine how much exercise you'd get if you had to run in place to move around in a first person shooter bloodbath. Just possibly, I might finally lose this unsightly middle-aged gut of mine. - DEADB33F, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9I believe a nunchuck which isn't attached to another one is called a stick.
- Recoil, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10FINALLY something constructive and intelligent. You've earned a digg, my friend.
- saralk, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8Oh man, they could remake paperboy.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9Yeah, or just go play some tennis...Wii tennis that is.
- shiftless, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9This is just the worst peripheral ever! I can't cheat at Track & Field on this!!! ;)
- elvenseven, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8Ah man, does it mean I have to stand up?
- Bluntman4000, on 10/11/2007, -2/+10For some reason this reminds me of the Power Glove... "I love the Power Glove...it's so bad." :P
- chrisinsocalif, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8I have an idea. The wii virtual bicycle ride. Its a stationary bike you ride through a wii city, who knows maybe you can shoot turtles off it like you would on mariocart. Maybe even have a multiplayer bike ride/race.
- blaze03, on 10/11/2007, -5/+12It's a good idea on paper, but according to the video there's not much to it except yoga, pushups, and perhaps some very light aerobics. There are no weights involved and you can't do any strenuous exercises such as jogging or biking.
Yoga and pushups you can very easily do without the Wii, so it basically amounts to an instructional video that tracks your reps.
It's not really revolutionary nor should it really be considered a "game", although clever marketing by nintendo will probably disguise it well as a game. - pathy, on 10/11/2007, -14/+21It's happening. It's happening far too soon. Those old ***** that insist Asteroids is the greatest game ever and nothing will ever touch it, and games today are just sliding down away from what made them great and blah blah blah...
I'm turning in to one of them.
I don't want gaming to open up and embrace everyone. Nintendo, while making a great stroke as a business, is killing gaming for me. It's a slew of mini-games, things that I don't enjoy anymore and are stretching their arms open to embrace more people but as that happens the hug they were giving me means less and less... Selfish? Yeap.
I didn't see it as clearly until now. The DS first... Oh sure, it's just the handheld. It doesn't *really* matter that games like Nintendogs, Brain Age, and other little things which could barely be considered 'games' are pushed on to the device. It has quite a few good adventure titles on it after all... Then the Wii... Oh sure, it's a new controller! There's no harm in it. It's letting old people play games with it, and getting the family involved! Well, that's not too bad I suppose, there's still potential for great games there even if a whole lot of them haven't started to pop up yet, I mean, it's not as if they're totally ditching the gamers... Ah, and now we have an officialy designed yoga game... Which took up a considerable chunk of their E3 presentation...Great.
It's not just Nintendo either. Maybe for this generation of the consoles, but you damn well know Microsoft and Sony will jump on it next time around, fighting for the 'casual' gamers just as Nintendo caught on to this generation...
Bleh.
Don't get me wrong now, this is great for the industry itself. It's getting bigger. More popular. Expanding... It's just shifting from what I enjoy and want.. - Ellipsys, on 10/11/2007, -2/+9This sort of thing is over all good for the Wii - it will increase their installed base. It will hopefully bring third party developers to the system. Do I want them to make a Wii Contra? Or a Wii Metal Gear Solid? Dear god, I want Xenogears Wii! I want "serious" games for "serious" gamers too. I want obscure Japanese RPGs that have metaphors for god personified in giant robots. However, the fact that Wii Sports, Wii Play, and Wii Fit exist doesn't detract from the ability of the system to have traditional games. Think about this: Okay, so you remember the warm fuzzy feelings from your favorite NES, SNES, PS1 etc... games? Before you criticize the Wii, think if the X360 and PS3 are able to give you games with the same feeling of quality? Maybe the answer is yes for you, but not for I. Why worry about some "casual" games. Its not like X360 is putting out the next Chrono Trigger. Just "Testoster-blast 1: The Shooting" "Generic sports game 2008" and "Cars go Fast now". These aren't classics either. So give Nintendo some time. Smash Brother Brawl is on the way, as is Metroid, more Resident Evil, and I hope...some decent J-RPGs. Maybe they'll do something great with that Wii Zapper. In the mean time, don't begrudge them creating games that are fun for most involved. Try Wii Fit before you dismiss it. And besides... they have the only decently moddable console these days. That's reason enough to keep it around :)
- estvir, on 10/11/2007, -2/+9+1
I mean, aside from Zelda:TP what solid, actual games are there? Please suggest some for me to try. Don't get me wrong, this looks fun in short bursts but that's it. - Ignathius, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7can't wait to see the new tony hawk games after this thing comes out :)
- blinkfink182, on 10/11/2007, -2/+9Your wife sounds like a viper-bitch. My wife understands that I've been a geek since well before I met her and doesn't mind if I take 20 or 30 minutes to run through some stuff on the Wii or my PC. She understands that games are one of the ways that I relax myself from my day. Just like I don't mind if she is busy making a cake literally all day that's not even for me (she runs a side business), because I know that's what she enjoys and it helps relax her. Tell your ball and chain to take a chill pill.
- SkippyDoorknob, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Where do you store your Guitar Hero and Rock Band controllers?
- Shanobi, on 10/11/2007, -6/+12I think it was brilliant to show yet another way that Wii is going to change everything. We all know what else is in the pipeline, showing this off though is going to showcase Nintendo to every non-gamer who's looking to keep fit or lose weight.
This is instant cash, and one hell of an idea. - Recoil, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5I think a lot of people who have never touched a Wii game have this misconception that all you do is shake the Wii remote around. Far from the truth.
- kravex, on 10/11/2007, -2/+7No, but a lot of people need motivation to do it, you could just do a crossword everyday instead of Brain-age games but then no one gives you a rating at the end of a crossword that you want to beat. Isn't that why people play games to beat them and get a better score? It's a shock it took them this long to combine them together.
- DTJunkie07, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5you are not their target audience.
- Charron, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5And, as has been stated before, that's not always a practical solution, with weather, safety, or other concerns. Jogging outside in sub-freezing temperatures can suck.
What I want to see is a WiiFit bundle. $300 or so, contains the console, Wii Sports, WiiFit, and the Balance Board. Sell that at Dick's or other places that sell exercise equipment, marketed as such. $300 for a game console creates hesitation, but it's easier to swallow for exercise equipment- especially if it reacts visually like WiiFit and contains all sorts of other "cool down" entertainment options.
Also, as for why gamers should care... it's been said before by others, but Tony Hawk. American Gladiators. SSX. This can work for existing, "true" games just as well, adding yet another layer of immersion and interaction. - STKD, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6The Zelda method was an optional quirk. The modems (at least the NES and SNES ones) were a lasting success in Japan.
Questioning the success of rumble and save pak's though? That's just silly. A lot of what we have today comes DIRECTLY from those two innovations. - peacebyanymeans, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Wow, you sound like a smart, informative, cool dude.
- Miche1987, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Try to shoot some shells while you're doing that, try to hit other people on bikes...let me know how that turns out, k?
- BillDoE, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Screw that workout *****. I do however see the Skateboard controller of the future..hehe
- ShrimpBoy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Have you imagined the possibilities?
A snowboard game, a skate game, a surf game, something on a magic carpet ride, etc.
Combined with a Wiimote and a nunchuck, it can become something great.. - meatmcguffin, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Any technical reason that Nintendo couldn't make a additional bluetooth module for a free USB slot? I can't wait for wireless nunchucks :)
- Greatmatt, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5I agree. They are most certainly marketing it as workout equipment.
@ silverwolfe
If you, as a gamer, don't care about WiiFit, then don't buy it. I'm sure that millions of other people would gladly pay a reasonable amount for this game to have a more enjoyable workout than walking on a treadmill, which can cost up to thousands of dollars, for an hour. Besides, a couple of the mini-games looked fun.
People seem to think about themselves to much. So this isn't for you. Fine, it's not Nintendo's goal to try and satisfy "your" specific needs. They are catering it to the large number of non-gamers and gamers who are interested in something like this. And as I mentioned, they will probably sell millions of copies of this "game". - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6And what exactly would you call the announcements for Metroid Prime 3, Smash Bros Brawl, Super Mario Galaxy and Fire Emblem, then? None of those are dumbed-down games aimed at casual gamers, and they're ALL coming out this year.
And this isn't a gimmick anymore than the Wii remote or the DS touch screen are "gimmicks". It all comes down to how well developers take advantage of them. - SiliconRain, on 10/11/2007, -3/+7I think I agree with you, Pathy. At first, I was excited about Nintendo's idea to 'return' gaming to what it used to be about: fun, addictive game-play, rather than cutting-edge graphics and AI. But, I'm starting to get the feeling that Nintendo have not returned to what games used to be - they don't have the feel at all that you got playing Mario, Sonic, Toejam and Earl etc etc. In fact, one of the main draws video-games had on me at least, was the sheer geekiness of it. No one else I knew could play like I did. No one else knew about how the games were put together. Most people didn't care.
Now, like you say, everyone from your Grandmother to you 5-year old sister are playing, and that's cheapening it somewhat. It reminds me of the advent of mass-market digital cameras. At first, my sentiments were: "Great. Now everyone can enjoy photography without having to spend years learning about light-metering, aperture settings, film types, polarizing filters etc. and without having to spend serious amounts of money either.". But, in the end, it turns out that I felt sore from two things: Firstly, the geeky knowledge that I had is devalued by the new accessibility of it all. Secondly, the charm that photos had when you got an envelope of them back from the chemist after coming back from your holidays is lost in the deluge of enumerable, free and (ultimately) low-quality digital photos that everyone has filling up their hard-drives.
I think this analogy holds for what the Wii has done with video-games. I don't think it's a *bad thing* exactly, but it makes long-time players (pre-1990) feel that something special about video-games has been lost. - Konklone, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5This is going to sell like crazy, and lots of hardcore gamers like us are going to find out that it's really fun. Are you afraid that you're going to find out you've overweight, or have no sense of balance? Rise to the challenge!
- STKD, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Apparently Reggie could...
