- mowe, on 01/20/2008, -3/+40Love it or hate it, Wii Fit is still gonna sell like "hotcakes in a colony of hotcake addicts during a hotcake shortage".
- terminalpariah, on 01/20/2008, -4/+30Then don't buy it.
- jawngee, on 01/20/2008, -2/+19I actually have Wii Fit (one of the many joys of having a Japanese wife). My wife is challenging me to use it for 20 minutes every day for 3 months to see what kind of impact it has, if any. I'll be blogging about it at http://wiifatty.com in the coming week.
For the two days I've had it, I can say that it's fun and it can be a serious work out as well, specifically the power training exercises and the jogging. You do need a relatively large work area though and a workout mat is helpful for some of the exercises.
Like it or not, this is a glimpse of the future. After using it, it's hard not to imagine physical trainers being replaced with monitoring electronics and computers to guide you through the process. I think one of the cooler features of Wii Fit is the way that it tracks and applauds your progress. When I worked out at the gym, with a trainer, I never really had a grasp on my progress but this spells it out in ways that make it easy to understand which I think will have a huge impact. - xtc46, on 01/20/2008, -1/+18anything that gets lazy people moving is good. Disguise exercise into a game and people will do it, why is it a bad thing? A lot of people use wii sports and other wii games for exercise. Others just think they are having fun and playing a game, and inadvertently are getting a work out. It would be fantastic if everyone went jogging or went to the gym, but it will never happen, so why cant we just be happy that Nintendo has come up with a way to get people moving around more. Ill be getting one. I have a gym membership, and try to exercise when I have time (I work 80-100 hour weeks and go to school) and having something fun like this at home would be great (I live in a small apartment so a tredmill/bike or weight set just isn't an option...hence the gym membership. I could go jogging but have a bad knee so running on the street hurts like hell.
- vancanucksfan, on 01/20/2008, -3/+15you'd burn more calories playing with yourself, and it's far mor enjoyable than a video game.
masturbation FTW - Darkhacker, on 01/20/2008, -10/+21Wii Fit's amazing new ad - http://youtube.com/watch?v=_iYBmAVuBns
- drakelord, on 01/20/2008, -0/+10But you can go jogging with Hitler!
- hadiz, on 01/20/2008, -6/+15And in other news, bicycling, walking, push-ups and other means of personal exercise have been released for hundreds, and in some cases thousands of years and do not require an extraneous board to measure weight and BMI and to perform said exercises. Come on people, this is like getting excited over a new bowflex or treadmill.
- KaiUno, on 01/20/2008, -1/+10Though I can already hear the sighs of countless obese kids whose Wii will turn against them this summer as their parents rush out to buy the exercise board.
"No Galaxies or Metroid 'till after your workout, sonny boy! Now finish your carrots." - inactive, on 01/20/2008, -12/+20I'm sorry but the Wii Fit it just dumb. Maybe when a fun game for it comes out, but using it as an exercise tool? Are you kidding me?
Besides, how much exercise can you possible get using a ~2 foot x 1 foot pad? There are only so many ways you can lift this leg up, step off with this leg, etc.
If you actually use this to get exercise, you're a ***** tool. - Phendrana, on 01/20/2008, -4/+12It beats the gym in fun factor. I'd rather be playing some minigames that keep me interested than running on a treadmill for 30 minutes. I don't really care if they're not as effective because I don't workout anyways.
- sanman, on 01/21/2008, -0/+7I like the idea of mixing videogames and exercise. Why not be more efficient and do those 2 things together? It's like somebody saying they don't like brain-games because they already read books separately. Hey, if something can be entertaining and good for you at the same time, then what's wrong with that?
Also, I like the idea of designers trying to break new ground with new controllers. When the mouse was popularly introduced through the Macintosh, there were nerd-skeptics who said, "WTF? Is this for people without real keyboarding skills?" But now the mouse is a popular fixture on our desktops, because it works. I hope that game platform producers will still continue to look for the next "mouse", because if they come up with a hit, we'll all be better off for it. Nothing ventured, nothing gained. Stagnation leads nowhere but down. - LogitechG15, on 01/20/2008, -22/+29Please tell me I'm not the only one who is not even remotely excited for "Wii fit". I mean come on, I'm just a slanky white man; however, I do workout at a gym (well at least try), and it sure as hell beats anything "Wii Fit" will have to offer.
- Jones82, on 01/21/2008, -0/+7Yeah, I'm sure a digger in a gym "meets hotties"
- chrislee149, on 01/20/2008, -0/+6Please visit a local sarcasm detector repairman.
- jason5190, on 01/20/2008, -5/+11and parents of fat children around the country rejoice for false hope
- inactive, on 01/20/2008, -0/+5WTF is this article talking about. Americas obesity rate is higher than ever how can that possibly qualify as under control.
- smacksaw, on 01/20/2008, -0/+4Many Wii Nunchuk movements have directly translated into improved masturbation techniques for me. I can't wait to see what Nintendo does with exercise.
- RTPMatt, on 01/21/2008, -0/+4im hoping for a arcade style shooting game that allow you to duck behind stuff and whatnot. the dave and busters here has one, it would be sweet on the wii.
- andymate, on 01/20/2008, -0/+4Maybe they should make wii food, where it teaches you how to cook a healthy meal.
Then Nintendo could really cash in on all these fat morons. - Fireinthedisco, on 01/20/2008, -2/+5just like the wii itself right?
- AndrewDB, on 01/20/2008, -3/+6I'll probably get it due to the fact I've got almost every single Nintendo console / accessory known to man (including the ill fated/still born Virtua Boy).. but I'll stick to my gym and DDR for an hour a day to lose weight.
- withoutashovel, on 01/21/2008, -0/+3Yeah, a Digger at a gym will only find "hotties" buffer than they are.
- sanman, on 01/21/2008, -0/+3Again, it's a new way of doing things. Videogames can provide an immersive world, storyline and atmosphere that can motivate you to exert yourself harder. Besides, it only takes 30 secs to power up a Wii and get playing. You can't jog alongside your sister on the other side of the country, but with motion-sensitive gaming and an internet connection you can do that.
- rarson, on 01/21/2008, -0/+2I would probably work out more if it was a bit more fun. I think that's part of the draw here. Jogging, biking, etc. with an iPod are okay, I guess (though I am probably the only person on Earth without an mp3 player), but certainly not fun.
- dadioflex, on 01/20/2008, -0/+2You work 16 hours a day, six days a week AND you go to school AND you have time to go to the gym ever? You're an inspiration to all those shiftless layabouts who sleep 8 hours a night.
- xptoast, on 01/21/2008, -0/+2Why do you want to jog next to your sister? Unless you are female that seems to me to not make much sense. Just curious:)
- daborg, on 01/21/2008, -0/+2Sounds good. Maybe if the 360 had this there would be fewer screaming retards on Live.
- withoutashovel, on 01/21/2008, -0/+2Oh, I'm sorry you're too wealthy to buy a Wii. Time will tell if the hype will last, but there's no need to be jealous that you're not a part of it.
- ibeetle, on 01/20/2008, -1/+3You cannot apply Japanese buying market to U.S. buying markets. The Sega Saturn, Dreamcast and NEC Turbo Duo out sold everything they competed against in Japan... including any of Nintendo manufactured competing systems.
You ever heard of the Neo Geo Pocket Color? They lasted about 6 months here in the U.S. However, in Japan they are the second best selling hand held game system.
And yet, all those systems failed miserably here in the U.S. - JasonCox, on 01/20/2008, -0/+2Wii would like to buy a treadmill, it'll cost Mii less. Plus it's in stock everywhere.
- xtc46, on 01/21/2008, -0/+2spring time with hitler?
- rarson, on 01/21/2008, -0/+2Cooking Mama is to teaching cooking as Trauma Center is to teaching medical skills.
- smacksaw, on 01/20/2008, -0/+2I like how it said that it isn't made for people over 300 lbs. I think "Trauma Center: Wii Gastric Bypass Edition" is coming next.
- orangetiki, on 01/21/2008, -0/+2Forget Wii fit, I wanna see a skateboarding / surfing game with the balance board.
T&C Surf Design for the 21st century? Wow I just showed my age - jigga, on 01/21/2008, -1/+3I'm in your boat. I could care less for WiiFit. If I want to exercise for real, I'll go to the gym
- NecroSexy, on 01/21/2008, -0/+2y hello thar hindsight bias
- BlueSkyfish, on 01/20/2008, -8/+10I couldn't give two ***** about an exercise game, it's the board that interests me. In the game, there's this little skiing tech demo, imagine that being incorporated into the next SSX.
- xtc46, on 01/21/2008, -1/+3yet has sold significantly more...strange.
- jawdog, on 01/21/2008, -0/+1http://digg.com/people/Spamming_Spammer_is_Spammin ...
- rarson, on 01/21/2008, -0/+1Yeah, for someone who supposedly owns one, you think you'd know that.
I personally still think the Virtual Boy is a lot of fun, but then I never got any headaches despite the fact that I would spend hours at a time using mine (sometimes with Autopause turned off). Coming out of an hour of that can actually feel like pulling out of a virtual reality world sometimes. It's a rather strange feeling. - xtc46, on 01/21/2008, -0/+1the dave and busters game relies on visual sensors to track your body's motion, not the pad it self. In order for the wii to do that, the kind of already can do it (in wii boxing you will notice your character moves when you lean left or right) and does so by the wiimote interpreting the position it is in related to the sensor bar and the accelerameter in the controller. I dont think this is accurate enough to make an FPS yet, but the potential for design is there. Maybe in conjunction with the weight distribution system in the balance board they could, but it wont be for some time.
- InternetRules, on 01/22/2008, -0/+1The plate is now made from adamantium for the americans
- MatttK, on 01/21/2008, -2/+3Seriously, why is it that people think every game must appeal to them? Get it through your heads - the Wii is not for you. That's why you own a 360 or a PS3 already.
- rarson, on 01/21/2008, -0/+1The Wii is a completely different gaming experience than the PS3, and its target audience is different as well. It's pretty pointless to compare the Wii to the other two consoles... they just aren't comparative gaming experiences.
- Heymann, on 01/21/2008, -1/+2this might just boost Wii sales even more!!!!
- inactive, on 01/21/2008, -0/+1Better than being too poor and 3rd world to play video games
- rarson, on 01/21/2008, -0/+1You mean NEC PC-Engine. There was no such thing as a Turbo anything in Japan. And those consoles didn't outsell their rivals, they simply matched them in sales, which is something they couldn't do in the US.
The Wonderswan was another handheld that did pretty well in Japan. Sometimes I think consoles sell well in Japan because Japanese people just like buying every damn console that Japan makes (but not the consoles that the US makes). - rarson, on 01/21/2008, -0/+1Sleep time isn't free time.
- Ellipsys, on 01/21/2008, -0/+1Look out Europe! We're going - on tour!
