- brainiac8008, on 03/30/2009, -1/+248Thank you Nintendo, for making a console that can be emulated well within its own lifetime.
- jakash, on 03/30/2009, -25/+134You know your console sucks when emulators are churning out better graphics, only a few years later.
- Claude1971, on 03/30/2009, -11/+110you know your console sucks when you've out sold both of your competitors combined, and people still want it.
Oh wait a minute..... - rothgar, on 03/30/2009, -2/+54I can't wait to see those highly textured Mii characters in 720p! WTF
- SkippyDoorknob, on 03/30/2009, -7/+59Yeah, and it sure came back to bite them. I mean look, they're barely in business anymore!
- doshindude, on 03/30/2009, -11/+59So Nintendo purposely nerfed its own console. Thanks ninty.
- gfxlonghorn, on 03/30/2009, -12/+53I read:
Thank you Nintendo for making a console that barely has enough power to beat the last gen consoles, therefore it makes it easy to emulate because of the lack of complexity. - dagamer34, on 03/30/2009, -2/+38No point in decreasing the price if supply can't meet demand, right?
- mmockett, on 03/30/2009, -6/+39I think that's probably a reason why it doesn't suck, isn't it?
- strictnein, on 03/30/2009, -1/+33"Developing art assets in HD is hideously expensive. That extra 10 bucks is like an HD tax."
No extra art assets were developed here. The emulator simply outputs at a higher res. All art/models/etc are the exact same ones used in the standard game. - NeoTechni, on 03/30/2009, -3/+33It's not upscaling. It's native rendering. Big difference
- geoken, on 03/30/2009, -0/+30"The computer you'd need to run the games through an emulator would cost alot more than the wii console itself"
Luckily some of us already have computers that we use for other purposes and wouldn't need to purchase one specifically for emulating since a single computer can fulfill multiple roles. - Kallius, on 03/30/2009, -10/+39You know your console sucks when the price 2 1/2 years after launch is the SAME or HIGHER than at initial release. Seriously, I understand why Nintendo charges so freaking much for the bare bones console (answer: because they CAN), but there's no way I'm paying launch price for it.
- kingmanic, on 03/30/2009, -3/+30Why wait? most 360 games come out for the PC eventually.
- inactive, on 03/30/2009, -1/+27snes9x
- johnomaz, on 03/30/2009, -4/+28Ya, I have all there consoles. The Wii isn't trying to compete with the PS3 or 360. Its in a class of its own. Is it better, no, but it has a different way of playing games. I play all three consoles differently. Fun entertainment, I play my Wii. I play my 360 for COD4 and other online games and my PS3 for offline games (online may come eventually, but I'm still hooked on COD4).
- Sethbacca, on 03/30/2009, -2/+23Why not, Britney Spears is still going strong. Proof that sales does not equal greatness, and fads can last a while.
- JeddHampton, on 03/30/2009, -3/+23I prefer WiiHD (pronounce "weed").
- OutlawDJ, on 03/30/2009, -2/+22No problem! Head over to any store, and walk out with one. Tell 'em I said it was OK
- inactive, on 03/30/2009, -6/+26The computer you'd need to run the games through an emulator would cost alot more than the wii console itself, and the games will be glitchy as hell (as you can tell if you look on the compatibility page for dolphin, the only games that work 100, most of them you wouldn't want to play, the popular games like ssbb are glitch laden.)
and for those curious the system running the emulator on the video.
System used:
+ E8400 @ 4GHz
+ 4GB Ballistix DDR2 RAM
+ XFX GTX 260 216 Black Edition" - colincornaby, on 03/30/2009, -2/+21If by nerfed, you mean sold a console with a cheaper graphics chip that isn't fast enough to do 720p output, yes, they nerfed the console.
Given that the point was to sell a cheaper console, most people would call that a business decision. You can take any console with 3D graphics and scale it up to do higher resolutions. You can emulate an N64 at 1080p, but no one would claim that Nintendo nerfed the N64 because it can't do 1080p. - BungDiddy, on 03/30/2009, -0/+19and the 360 controller works automatically on Windows without any configuration or calibration required.
- dtfinch, on 03/30/2009, -1/+18I had no idea Wii emulation had advanced so far. Now I feel old again.
- secondwheel2, on 03/30/2009, -1/+17have you ever seen all the ***** Gameboys they have bought out?
- OutlawDJ, on 03/30/2009, -2/+17Or better yet...have the best of all worlds and get all three systems.
- MyNameIsJoe, on 03/30/2009, -0/+14"The computer you'd need to run the games through an emulator would cost alot more than the wii console itself"
Thanks for informing me of that. I was just about to go out and buy a computer for under $250 to try to run this emulator. - dullnation, on 03/30/2009, -0/+14It's mainly because the Wii specs are quite modest compared to all the other current gen consoles.
- evets616, on 03/30/2009, -1/+15Maybe not but it would affect what developers could do with the system if the hardware were more robust. Plenty of good Wii games exist that don't need to look like Crysis or Gears. But plenty also suffer because the game needs power that the Wii can't provide. Dead Rising Wii vs. the 360 version is the most obvious comparison.
There's nothing wrong with Nintendo wanting to escape the masterbatory graphics race but that doesn't let them opt out of provide the specs to allow developers to do exciting things for gameplay. Dead Rising is a game that just wasn't possible 10 years ago. The premise is rather obvious considering the source material but the execution of the gameplay wasn't possible before. And even on the Wii, the gameplay suffers for its lack of power.
The games just need to look good enough. Gameplay shouldn't suffer because the developers spent all their time on graphics. It also shouldn't suffer because the console doesn't have the spec to support new, innovative gameplay.
sorry for the rant. - kd420, on 03/30/2009, -5/+18That is the some of the most retarded logic I have ever heard. If I sell a car, and continue manufacturing the same car over several years, and still am selling out even after raising the price (slightly)... I must have a ***** product? I would say the 360 is crappy since they die at atrocious rates. I say the Wii sucks because it has limited 3rd party games, or the hardware is underpowered. But the prices, that is a complement to the quality of the product if anything.
- themastersb, on 03/30/2009, -0/+13Holy crap. I didn't know that it was already able to be emulated so well. The Gamecube still has problems when I see it emulated.
- klane, on 03/31/2009, -0/+13"a sad fact for audio/visual connoisseurs"
Yes, because games sound so much better in 720p. - EvolvedAnt, on 03/30/2009, -2/+15A computer could render a scene from the Xbox 360 or PS3 at even greater than 1080p. Does that mean those consoles were also nerfed? You fail at understanding how emulation works.
- Hybred1234, on 03/31/2009, -1/+13You're one of those idiots who think they're being witty but don't know about the [HD] button, aren't you?
- sirjoebob, on 03/30/2009, -0/+12You should *give* it to me...
- kalvinb, on 03/30/2009, -4/+16The Wii was "nerfed" so that the price would be low. I'd rather be able to afford a 480p system than look at a nice 720p system in the store. Most people are still using cheaper TVs which only support 480p anyway. It doesn't make sense to increase the price of the system to support something that the vast majority of users won't be able to take advantage of.
No doubt the Wii2 will mostly be a Wii with a faster processor and faster graphics chip. Which means it will be 100% compatible with your existing library of games and actually make the games look better. So even if you don't have money to spend on new games there's still an incentive to buy it.
And since you can put your downloaded VC games on an SD card there's a good chance you'll be able to transfer those to your new system. - farfromsubtl, on 03/30/2009, -2/+14You really have to wonder... is it possible that Nintendo could release a "Wii HD" in the future? I mean... if the games are capable of being turned up like this, it is certainly a possibility, albeit really their style.
- RyeBrye, on 03/31/2009, -0/+12I emulate N64 in 1080p. The gigantic polygons are rather annoying, but some scenes look pretty cool.
- matt.rubin, on 03/30/2009, -0/+12you haven't lived until you have played LOZ: ocarina of time in Wide screen 1920x1200 16x AA with High res textures. Then get a USB n64 controller or make one yourself, They are USB just different form factor, I think.
- kalvinb, on 03/30/2009, -0/+11upscaling takes the 480p image and increases it to 720p or whatever. It's like a digital zoom. You're just doing calculations to guess what the missing pixels would be.
Rendering at 720p is like an optical zoom. You're actually getting more image information.
Take an image that's 720 pixels high and resize it to 480 pixels high. Then resize it back to 720 pixels and compare it to the original. - sadisticmind, on 03/30/2009, -0/+11OMG
- KidSinister, on 03/30/2009, -2/+13Remember the Game Boy Advance? Back then Nintendo had an emulator for the system released BEFORE the system itself.
- inactive, on 03/30/2009, -3/+14FTW
- sonofabiscuit, on 03/30/2009, -0/+11@potterboy
Yeah, but compare that with the actual specs of PS2. Isn't it a bit ridiculous? - inactive, on 03/30/2009, -0/+10the computer used in the video
System used:
+ E8400 @ 4GHz
+ 4GB Ballistix DDR2 RAM
+ XFX GTX 260 216 Black Edition
(from the original video link) - directedition, on 03/30/2009, -4/+14Hell yeah, because the value of a console is purely in the resolution of the graphics it puts out. Controller mechanics, energy usage, and price certainly don't mean *****.
- superflydugg, on 03/30/2009, -1/+11oh you have to click the little HD button on the bottom...
- Charlotte_Web, on 03/30/2009, -0/+10Atari nerfed the 2600...
- freehunter, on 03/30/2009, -0/+10It's not their style to release new versions of their hardware that include support for things that were somewhat obvious? DS Lite? GBA SP? Game Boy Color/Pocket? Granted, they usually only do it for the handhelds, but it is still within their business model.
- chazuk, on 03/30/2009, -0/+10Puts Pentium III powered computer back into the cupboard! :(
- SkippyDoorknob, on 03/30/2009, -1/+11Of course it helps out the game industry.
Don't assume that all casual gamers will remain casual gamers. Some of them will move up to more hard-core games, but even if they don't it means that there's a larger base of people to sell casual games to. Profiting off of easy casual sales can help provide funds for the development of the big expensive AAA games that only appeal to the hard-core gamer. -
