- AhrenBa, on 10/10/2007, -5/+128Damn, the one's from 2006 better have a "locked" feature like this that can be fixed with a firmware update!
- NikoKun, on 10/10/2007, -13/+82A friend of mine has modified his Wii, to run a homebrew code that plays DVDs just fine... the hardware is capable of doing it, it's just the software and encoding that is needed. I think any Wii, regardless of when it was made, has the ability... just not the software.=/
- amrush4th, on 10/10/2007, -17/+79You might as well come out with tape deck support if your going to be this far behind the game
- charlescheese, on 10/10/2007, -4/+52Actually, you're wrong. They have DVD drives in them, and all it takes is software to unlock them to play dvd's. So yeah, it's really that simple.
- Lyanto, on 10/10/2007, -1/+43Well they DO have the drives. It would probably just require an update to the Wii's OS, not some hardcore modding.
- afterwego, on 10/10/2007, -1/+29This doesn't mean anything. Its basically someone reading too much into the FAQ entry. I would think Nintendo would be smart enough not to release a new Wii with those capabilities, but rather open them up with a firmware update. Honestly they would have a lot of people pissed at them if they released a new one.
- DaveMode, on 10/10/2007, -2/+29Can you enlighten me? I'm not aware of any way to play a DVD movie from a Wii, with or without a modchip installed. Are you sure your friend didn't mean he could burn Wii games on DVD-R media and then play them? If that's the case, then yeah you can do it. The Wii has not yet been hacked to allow homebrew Wii software to run on it. It currently can only do Gamecube homebrew.
- loconet, on 10/10/2007, -2/+28Screw dvd playback. Like most people, I already have a DVD player. This is what i would like instead:
- A way to communicate with other players online - text chat, lobbies, headset.
- External hard drive.
- Better keyboard support (ie, more keys working, more places where the keyboard works)
- Better flash support (ie. more recent version - I know Opera/Adobe will have to come in play here but Nintendo can put some muscle behind this too)
- I'd love to have a "online music" channel where I can select my favorite online radio station (shoutcast, etc) and play it with the option of sending the channel to the background so I can listen to it while I play or do other stuff.
- I want Nintendo to stop with the wii-code sharing paranoia. I can't believe how ***** anal they are about it.
Now, I'm not saying they should release all this tomorrow since it will take some time but hopefully they have these on their "TODO" list :p - skyshock1, on 10/10/2007, -2/+25Same reason you'd use a standard CD/DVD player w/ RCA outs. Most people don't give a ***** about digital audio outs anyway.
- KnockoutNerd, on 10/10/2007, -7/+27So you don't have a DVD player?
- BHSPitMonkey, on 10/10/2007, -4/+21Even if he -had- somehow gotten code running, there isn't any homebrew code out there to run.
Pics or it didn't. - blahtastic, on 10/10/2007, -3/+19The only reason I would really care is if they released a Hard Drive attatchment and it let you rip and store music to play in future games. Then they actually made some games to support that feature. Otherwise, I have a DVD player. And a 360. And tons of CD players. I wouldn't even feel like it would be tempting to get a new one that has DVD capability.
Now how about a first party battery pack/door and charging dock for 2 remotes at a time. Perhaps one that plugs into the USB ports. That would truly be thrilling. I swear they kill batteries when you're not even playing with them. - khedoros, on 07/31/2009, -0/+16There should (theoretically) be no problem in providing a software DVD decoder. The question is if Nintendo wants to put the work into implementing it.
- DivisibleByZero, on 10/10/2007, -0/+15Nintendo was initially advertising the Wii as like a revolution to your TV viewing experience or something. They wanted the Wiimote to look like a standard remote control for that very reason.
So I was completely baffled that it didn't do something so simple as play DVDs. It would have been the perfect fit. - houndeyex, on 10/10/2007, -2/+17Phonograph support, plz. kthxbai
- Scruffydan, on 10/10/2007, -2/+17not everyone has two game consoles.
- cozinator, on 10/10/2007, -2/+16The PS2 hasn't even been out for seven years.
- seanraf, on 10/10/2007, -3/+14Am I the only one who could care less whether the Wii can play CDs and DVDs, at least in its current state? I mean, on the video side of things it should be fine, but who wants to listen to surround sound movies and other digital audio on L/R analog cables in a surround sound setup? I'd be much more interested if Nintendo released an updated Wii with digital audio output in order to potentially get true surround sound out of my games and movies, but as of right now I can't justify using the Wii as my standalone DVD/CD player when there are options on the market that can do progressive scan and digital audio output for less than $30.
- chazuk, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10Every DVD player I've seen plays CD's ffs........
- MioTheGreat, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10While I do that having a dvd player in the Wii would be very convienient, I agree with you. The Wii doesn't support 5.1 sound, which is a huge drawback to using the Wii as your dvd player.
- BHSPitMonkey, on 10/10/2007, -3/+13It would be even worse if they made you go to the store and pick up a $30 DVD player.
- andshewas, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10Seriously. They should be rewarding the pre-orderers that stood in line at midnight.
- Katowitz, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10Pro-Logic isn't Dolby Digital 5.1. Mio is right.
- grumpyrain, on 10/10/2007, -2/+11Dear Nintendo,
Please let me watch DVDs and listen to CDs. Make me buy it through the shopping channel if you like. - HappyScrappy, on 10/10/2007, -4/+13That's quite a reach.
Why would you use your Wii to play DVDs and CDs anyway? It doesn't have digital audio out. - thanassius, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8Wasn't it already revealed announced sometime last year, that the Japanese systems would be gaining DVD playback functionality sometime in 2007 or 2008, or was that just a rumor?
My Sega Saturn could play audio CDs, and it was freakin awesome with that little space shuttle animation back in 1996, but I have a DVD player with digital audio out, and an assortment of other ways to play CDs.
I wouldn't want my DVD player to suddently gain the ability to play games. Remember what happened when we tried THAT?!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CD-i - msarge, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8Yeah just like a was pissed when I got an original GBA, and then they release the GBA SP. Not to mention when I got a DS, and then they released a DS Lite.
- louiedog, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9You use CDs?
- bioret2, on 10/10/2007, -4/+12you dont have a friggin dvd player?
- BHSPitMonkey, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7The Wii, to date, hasn't been sold with DVD licensing fees factored into the cost. They could release the update in the Shop channel for Wii points, but it'd be a hackish situation at best.
- djh816, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8maybe not the os but the actual firmware of the drive itself. the firmware is what blocked backups from being read on the original xbox at least.
- dw2005, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Would be great if it had XViD playback support
- Junrin, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7yeah, some of us have seven!
- DivisibleByZero, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7I'm not saying I trust the guy, but I have to point out how bad your argument is. You're basically saying that once he got his Wii to run homebrew, it would be useless because there's nothing he can go download from the internet. Ever think that maybe he could have written the code himself? Somebody has to. It doesn't just magically appear.
Even so, he'd be a hardcore jackass for not sharing. - MrSidnet, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7troll much?
- dxprog, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6And what would be the point of that? It'd be stupid to alienate the already 6+ million Wii owners (Probably more around 8+ million by the time those games are released).
- HolyChimp, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Because if there's one thing the Wii needs right now it's a boost to its failing sales...
- shikkaba, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6That's not Nintendo's new "thing." They've always done it. Think about it. There were a couple versions of the original Nintendo, a couple of SNES, Gameboy had 3, Gameboy Advance had 3, Nintendo DS had 2 so far. The only things that never had another version were the N64, Gamecube and Virtual Boy.
ALL game system manufacturers have done this. - tanameyer, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5I play DivX, XviD, DVDs, etc. on my Wii all the time. Just use MFE (Media Front End); it's some homebrew made for the Gamecube. The tutorial site that I used is offline, but Google still has it in the cache. Just search for "cache:http://modyawii.tehskeen.com/mfe.html" in Google or do a Google search for "MFE Player". There's new Wii homebrew coming out soon that is easier to use than MFE Player, but for now MFE Player (and all the old Gamecube homebrew) does the trick.
Don't click the above link... you have to manually type "cache:http://modyawii.tehskeen.com/mfe.html" into the Google search box. (Stupid digg comment URL parsing...) - DivisibleByZero, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6Upon further googling. Maybe it's this guy?
http://wiihacks.blogspot.com/2007/05/region-free-wii-dvd-player-for-wii.html - xSEED, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5they also need the dvd movie css key and decoder
- blahtastic, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4At least you have a backlight in that thing. I was burned with a GBA original. Actually I prefer the design, just...you know, not the springy light doodle I had to carry around to play the damn thing in the dark.
- andshewas, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Nobody cared about your comment about his list.
- Drewsufer, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5I vote for GAMES!
- JoeDiggsIt, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Ah, the clear purple springy light doodle, I missed the eye strain you caused while playing Dragon Warrior: Monsters.
- foxingworth, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Did you even read the wikipedia that you linked to? Nintendo didn't make the Panasonic Q, Pansonic did (go figure). They licensed the gamecube technology to Panasonic in trade for Panasonic making the optical drives for the standard gamecube.
- MacHarborGuy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3The spec may require a digital audio out, but I have seen cheap-o DVD players at walmart without digital audio outputs, just the standard RCA red/white jacks, so I doubt that would be an issue. As long as it has the red/white jacks, it can output Pro-Logic (like the GameCube and Wii both can output). My old Regeant 5.1 speaker system (now under the Walmart sold brand called Durabrand) only has RCA audio inputs and it decodes Pro-Logic just fine.
- shikkaba, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3See, now that doesn't make sense. The GBA SP didn't alienate anyone. The system could play all previous games. It just improved on the system.
What dxprog was saying is that to change the type of media used to play the games would mean that everyone who had the theoretical older Wii hardware would be stuck with a system that wouldn't play the theoretical new format games, which really would be a stupid move.
The GBA SP wasn't a stupid move on Nintendo's part because it allowed them to gain more money while not alienating anyone. - shikkaba, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3If they have a headset for the DS (which they do now), they will more than likely come out with one for the wii eventually.
- cozinator, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Using hyperbole when you're trying to prove a point usually just lends credence to the other side of argument (especially when you're called on it).
