- BenSerwa, on 08/30/2008, -23/+275No. Wrong.
- t3hmyth, on 08/30/2008, -6/+129To say that Mario should permanently retire from Nintendo's lineup is, I think, too much. Instead, Nintendo should be making MORE FRANCHISES. If Nintendo just tried to produce a new franchise after new franchise, with the minds they have working there, something should stick to the wall and last. Sure, they'd get their share of failures, but another great character could also emerge as well. After all, nobody remembers mediocrity.
- Ooddiey, on 08/30/2008, -14/+125People should retire trying to retire Mario.
- dekuscrub, on 08/30/2008, -11/+98That would be like Disney retiring Mickey. Not going to happen.
- PhantomChicken, on 08/30/2008, -7/+87Face it Microsoft: Master Chief will never be as lovable as Mario.
- ibroketheserver, on 08/30/2008, -3/+591.) Write an intentionally asinine, flame-bait story.
2.) Wait seven paragraphs for people to get pissed off.
3.) Annoyingly and insistently tell people to vent their frustrations on your message boards.
4.) Watch traffic to the message boards go up.
5.) Get a raise.
***** bastards. - inactive, on 08/30/2008, -10/+55Mario will go on forever and ever and ever until the world explodes.
Sidenote: Please stop begging people to digg up the ***** you submit. It's not manly. You're born and island, you die an island. - chaosblade77, on 08/30/2008, -4/+39"The Wii was the first console that didn't have a Mario game as the headline act."
Not true, the GCN didn't get a Mario game at launch either, and even though they aren't home consoles, we didn't see a Mario game for the DS and GBA at launch either. In fact, the GBA never even had a true Mario game, the closest thing was the "Mario Advance" series which was just ports of NES and SNES Mario games.
I'm just tired of the spin-offs, which make up like 9/10 of the "Mario games" released now. If Nintendo wants to run a sports line of games, they can do it without Mario. If they can't make a game worth buying without slapping one of their well-known mascots on it, it's probably not a good game anyway. I think they should just put a franchise together for those kind of games specifically. Mario Party is really the only one that wouldn't work too well, but as far as I know it's dying anyway. - inactive, on 08/30/2008, -8/+42Completely agree. :)
- badenglishihave, on 08/30/2008, -1/+33rtfa: "Take a company like Disney. Even though Mickey Mouse is still the company’s mascot and a worldwide megabrand, he no longer stars in their headline films."
- BlaqReaper, on 08/30/2008, -0/+31Clearly KSUdesigner was saying that Mario doesn't star in Disney's headline films.
- inactive, on 08/30/2008, -4/+33I think the author of this article should retire from writing pointless and stupid drivel.
- Tippx, on 08/30/2008, -5/+33and does anyone realize this is MSN? owned by M$? Nintendos competitor? And they should never retire mario, the only sub-par 3-d mario Platformer was sunshine.
- adventis, on 08/30/2008, -2/+29I like how this was an article published on MSN.com - unbiased I'm certain of it.
- lostotaku, on 08/30/2008, -1/+25Hahaha MSN. No bias there.
- YME1280, on 08/30/2008, -9/+31Made of fail
- Davoidbot, on 08/30/2008, -5/+22Super Paper Mario on the DS?
- sweeneyowns, on 08/30/2008, -2/+18anyone else notice who this guy really is?
"Patrick Goss is employed on a freelance basis by Microsoft. The views in this column are those of the author and not of MSN or Microsoft. "
he's just mad nintendo won't port mario games to his part time employer's console.
side note: i just met an 18 yo kid who had NEVER played mario bros. or even touched an NES. i shed a tear for old school gaming. - sebastianbr, on 08/30/2008, -2/+18There is no Super Paper Mario on the DS...
- inactive, on 08/30/2008, -1/+15Sub-par for Mario maybe, but it was still an excellent game.
- inactive, on 08/30/2008, -1/+15wii sports is not the best game on the wii. Super Mario Galaxy was the best game of 2007, hands down. The only game close to SMG is CoD4, and CoD4 had a flawed single-player. SMG had a unique story (the storybook) and an amazing, new unique gameplay. If Nintendo can make near-perfect games like that, why would they ***** retire MARIO! It's like pokemon without pikachu.
- inactive, on 08/30/2008, -1/+15I was agreeing that Mario shouldn't retire. Don't want him to.
Just found the article interesting and wanted to see what others think about it. :) - doshindude, on 08/30/2008, -4/+17Masterofhyrule, stop submitting crap stories like this. They're lame.
- Meccabilly, on 08/30/2008, -1/+141. To much money - never gonna kill the cash cow.
2. Why? It would be like 'retiring' Batman, Spiderman or Bond - if it all gets a bit stale then go for re-invention - I think Mario 64 and Galaxy, as well as Paper Mario etc were all good examples of this. - Myonosken, on 08/30/2008, -3/+16@ksu: What the ***** are you talking about? Just for the Wii so far we've got Super Mario Galaxy, Mario Kart, Super Paper Mario, Mario Party 8, Mario Strikers Charged, Mario Super Sluggers, Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games...etc
- JRW5061, on 08/30/2008, -0/+12They are developing new franchises one step at a time. I, for one, think that Pikmin is a wonderful addition to the Nintendo legacy. These familiar characters are what makes nintendo, nintendo. I grew up playing the old nintendo games like zelda, metroid, mario, etc. I love the fact that they are keeping these classic franchises alive. Also, a game like smash bros would never be possible on another system because they lack the library of classic characters that nintendo has.
- daridave, on 08/30/2008, -3/+15The day Mario retires, I stop playing. Started with Mario, will stop with Mario. NOT that there's nothing else out there, in fact I'm going crazy on how many good games there are out there, but ... never mind the spin-offs for a second ... actual "Super Mario" games are absolutely amazing. If there are people actually wishing for those games to stop, something is seriously wrong in the world of gaming.
- SSUK, on 08/30/2008, -0/+11Sonic has ***** blown over the last few years. In the 90's, he was ***** awesome. Now he's just a ***** joke. Same goes for most major SEGA franchises including the once illustrious NiGHTS.
SEGA needs to either fix Sonic or let our childhood hero die with a bit of dignity intact. ***** you, SEGA. - katjas, on 08/30/2008, -1/+12Completely agree. I grew up with Mario. He can retire when you pry him from my cold dead hands.
Also that "Should Mario retire? Let us know what you think on the message boards" pissed me off so ***** much.
Just to note this is also from the people who make the xbox. - anagoge, on 08/30/2008, -0/+11"Join Mario in his latest adventure to stop the world exploding!"
- Butters757, on 08/30/2008, -2/+13Super Mario Sunshine?
- Davoidbot, on 08/30/2008, -11/+22Just another example of why MSN isn't a reliable news source.
- gfunk84, on 08/30/2008, -0/+11Didn't the DS launch with Super Mario 64 DS?
- S1L3NTC, on 08/30/2008, -1/+11How many time did he have to include the link "Should Mario retire? Let us know what you think on the message boards." in his article?
Is the author really starving for attention that much?
My take on the repetitive question is:
No. Mario's fine.
However, we shouldn't see him in every title that Nintendo produces and they should put more effort into creting new characters. - ebolaworld, on 08/30/2008, -4/+13FOUR MORE YEARS!
- NotYourProdigy, on 08/30/2008, -4/+13Why you should pick up a hobby and stop giving me your 2 cents...
- unclejimbo88, on 08/30/2008, -3/+12This article is from a microsoft site. Coincidence?
- angel0, on 08/30/2008, -0/+9want me to kill myself?
- acanaday, on 08/30/2008, -2/+10This is a dumb article. I loved Mario when I was a kid, and my kids will love Mario too. Its as simple as that.
It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out why Nintendo keep making Mario games. There is always a new generation of younger players. - fantasyflamz, on 08/30/2008, -2/+10exactly... Nintendo should be making some new franchises... some new ideas!
Oh, and roodammy, I have played both of those games and I thought mario kart was fun (but not much different from the older ones, and granted I loved the old ones).
What you don't understand is that I enjoyed playing mario games and I love playing mario kart, but that doesn't mean that they should create more of the same thing, just changing one or two gameplay issues.
I'd rather see nintendo come up with something new. - KSUdesigner, on 08/30/2008, -0/+8Mario will live on even after the world explodes. He has the ability to travel through space.
- mockidol, on 08/30/2008, -2/+9No. No. No. No... No.
The "New Super Mario Brothes" restored all faith I had in Mario. - KingGorilla, on 08/30/2008, -1/+8I dunno. Those grunts are pretty darn adorable
- Ericdigital, on 08/30/2008, -0/+7I don't think they need to retire them, however they do need to get some more creative people to think up the next big face, it would just be nice to see some new creativity instead of constantly reinventing the wheel every console
- ALink2ThePast, on 08/30/2008, -0/+7And I'm sure he owes much of that raise to digg
- inactive, on 08/30/2008, -2/+8@KSUdesigner
Seriously? http://www.gamespot.com/wii/action/supermario128/i ... there's plenty more too. - rhinopig, on 08/30/2008, -4/+10"Nor is Mario in any danger of needing a new challenge. He's not going to do a Michael Jordan and try his hand at professional baseball or follow Vinnie Jones into acting, for instance."
Yeah... http://digg.com/nintendo/A_Swing_and_A_Miss_For_Ma ... - Armanese, on 08/30/2008, -3/+9This is the most ridiculous thing I have ever read! Why the ***** would Nintendo stop making Mario games? Why would anybody even want to stop playing Mario games? Ever since your coming of age into video games, there has been a major Mario game for you to enjoy. It doesn't make sense on both sides, the gamers, or the BIG N!!! This complete ***** doesn't know what he's talking about, and just wants attention and to be "controversial" by stirring up *****.
- BronxBartoni, on 08/30/2008, -3/+9Mario?
Retire?
What are you retarded? -
