- LittleFishChan, on 02/21/2008, -3/+103It still looks like fun to me.
- slamm71, on 02/21/2008, -3/+89Poor Mario doesn't even have a face.
- dumpyhumpy, on 02/21/2008, -10/+82so did they just record mario and reduce the graphics to that pixel size? it was kind of impressive for a minute. the music and the correct speed of play kinda just makes it look like somebody took all of 2 minutes to change downgrade the resolution... still cool... but not that cool... bury me to hell.
- SkippyDoorknob, on 02/21/2008, -1/+67I think they made it look too good.
The original Mario Bros. came out on the Atari 2600 and looked much worse: http://www.videogamecritic.net/images/2600/mario_b ...
Not to mention Donkey Kong:
http://www.consoleclassix.com/info_img/Donkey_Kong ... - daftfunk1, on 02/21/2008, -1/+64Using a joystick would be frustrating as hell.
- Philmer, on 02/21/2008, -6/+60it's...it's ATARIO!!!
- drlha, on 02/21/2008, -1/+52Too impressive. There's no way the 2600 would have handled side scrolling as smoothly as that. I guess people are too young to remember that "smooth side scrolling" in games was once a major innovation, and that previously games had static screens (e.g. Pitfall) instead of scrolling.

- inactive, on 02/21/2008, -0/+42in case you missed it, here's If Mario Galaxy was on SNES http://www.nintendowiifanboy.com/2008/02/21/what-i ...
- Mr.White, on 02/21/2008, -1/+43While it may look like that on an Atari 2600, it certainly wouldn't play like that. The Atari wouldn't have been able to handle the constant screen scroll (screen draw, whatever you want to call it) that made Super Mario Bros such a breakthrough. Basically Mario would reach the right side of the screen, it would pause for a second, and then the next half would be displayed with Mario now on the far left.
- DirtPile, on 02/21/2008, -1/+30Thank you Mario, but the Princess is in another brown square.
- borez, on 02/21/2008, -0/+29There's no way you'd get that kind of sound from a 2 voice ( 1 square, 1 white noise ) Atari 2600 chip set.
- Lord_oftheTrons, on 02/21/2008, -1/+26You couldn't even run or launch fireballs with only one button. I also think that even at the reduced resolution the poor 2600 would struggle.
- TrevorBelmont, on 02/21/2008, -0/+25My Atari never looked that colorful or animated that smoothly.
- UberNick, on 02/21/2008, -2/+25Oh man, I remember how absolutely amazed I was when my cousin unveiled his new NES in 86. I dreamt of Super Mario for weeks. The bright, shiny colors! The killer tunes! The unbounded side-scrolling world! The incredible power-ups! I begged my parents for weeks to get me NES so I could play SMB.
After resisting, my dad eventually caved and said we could get the Atari version. I didn't believe there was one until he pointed it out at Toys R Us one weekend. The anticipation and excitement was more than I'd ever felt. The 10 minute car ride home was a tortuous, eternity of an experience. Then we popped it in and... that. That terrible terrible picture SkippyDoorKnob posted of dated, disappointing graphics. My crushed hopes and dreams, relived thanks to you. I hate you Skippy. - theaceoffire, on 02/21/2008, -1/+22I know... It feels weird too.
I wonder what Bioshock would look like on the Atari? - haleym, on 02/21/2008, -0/+21Wait... there was a world 1-3 in Super Mario Bros?
- lamprey187, on 02/21/2008, -0/+21nah, I'd have to agree with you. The text at the top would not look that way on a 2600. Still was cool though. I would have failed out of elementary school if that cartridge actually existed.
- evil-doer, on 02/21/2008, -1/+20it wouldnt look this good. it had way more limited colors and pixel size than lots of elements in this
- MScrip, on 02/21/2008, -0/+19Plus the sound would be no where near as good on the Atari either.
- tensaibaka, on 02/21/2008, -6/+20Imagine Mario staring in the face of death as a rectangular pixel flame bears down on him from Bowser. It'd be funny to see the squids from the underwater world, or the hammer brothers on the 2600 as well. "Sorry Mario, but your princess is in another rectangle shaped building."
- inactive, on 02/21/2008, -0/+14You're right. There was no flicker or sprite guides on the sides.
Also, there were way too many objects on screen that the Atari didn't have memory for. - lamprey187, on 02/21/2008, -1/+14pretty cool, I doubt it would even look that good on a 2600, but still would be cool to play.
- 8ight, on 02/21/2008, -1/+13Isn't this a hacked rom that's been floating around this cloud for years? I've had this thing for a long, long time. And no, the 2600 wouldn't play it near that well... and I'd hate to hear the music and sound effects. Fun rom to call up and mess with your friends though.
- 60effects, on 02/21/2008, -0/+11i think the dude from Adventure would give Mario a run for his money. he gets a weapon (if he can find it)
- Sneakernets, on 02/21/2008, -1/+11As someone that has programmed for the atari 2600, I can say that this=*****. yes, it could have been possible, platformers have been done before, and some adventurous man is attempting to port megaman to the 2600. The 2600 isn't THAT bad, people. After all, the NES and 2600 both used variants of the 6502 chip.
- Yodzilla, on 02/21/2008, -1/+10But there was a version of the original Mario Brothers on the 2600
http://www.videogamecritic.net/images/2600/mario_b ... - chewbacca77, on 02/21/2008, -2/+11Wow. That looks incredibly accurate and really fun.
- smackafiyah, on 02/21/2008, -1/+9Some reason from watching this I kept on expecting a Mooninites cameo
- trc0, on 02/21/2008, -0/+8http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CvriTGbmp4Q
Mario where are you? - Spuy767, on 02/21/2008, -1/+9This is a NES rom hacked. It's called 2600 Bros.nes.
- theaceoffire, on 02/21/2008, -0/+7It would be a very bizarre version of pong, where there is only one player (The ground), and gravity is your opponent.
- magiclava, on 02/21/2008, -12/+19That pretty impressive!
- grimward, on 02/21/2008, -1/+8ye gods, i'd love to play that one!
- merdiesel, on 02/21/2008, -0/+7gameplay>>>>graphics
- brewno2k, on 02/21/2008, -0/+7He didn't go through the Warp Zone. :/
- nukemunky, on 02/21/2008, -0/+6It was made by rom hacking group called "The Elite Hacking Force" and it was created around the year of 1998.
- Lasereth, on 02/21/2008, -5/+11Yeah this is BS. The 2600 wouldn't run it that well. They simply took a video of Mario and downgraded the resolution.
- MaynardJK, on 02/21/2008, -0/+6Mario Bros was a game for the Atari, not Super Mario Bros.
- theaceoffire, on 02/21/2008, -1/+7Can you do portal?
- levitron, on 02/21/2008, -0/+6Anybody know who made this?
- Nooze2k, on 02/21/2008, -0/+5Push up to jump, and always run fast, with the button still shooting the fireballs... this is how they did it on Giana Sisters for the Commodore 64.
- nukemunky, on 02/21/2008, -0/+5Its a rom hack called Atario Bros. Each of the sprites in the game were edited to look like Atari graphics. This game patch was available on Zophars domain for quite some time, but it looks like the site is down.
http://209.85.165.104/search?q=cache:JoFnSwO7dmIJ: ... - Kurlumbenus, on 02/21/2008, -0/+5Just like real life.
- tuffy, on 02/21/2008, -1/+6It wouldn't look that good on an Atari 2600. A background layer, with stuff on it, scrolling along with the foreground was rarely seen. A layer with letters on it (for the timer and such) with stuff scrolling behind it wasn't done either. Blitting was expensive, so 2600 games consisted mostly of single color backgrounds and rarely had scrolling at all.
Simply making the pixels bigger and blockier doesn't make a game look like they really did on the Atari. - JettaMan, on 02/21/2008, -1/+6I think the 2600 couldn't do those colors. They look too nice. Also, sound wouldn't be nearly as good. And the speed of scrolling and animations like when the bricks fly are a bit too smooth. Nice experiment though, but probably not accurate.
- kingmanic, on 02/21/2008, -0/+5Looks like SMB with a graphic filter or a graphics hack on the NES version. The 2600 wouldn't be able to handle so many moving elements as smoothly and isn't that responsive.
- wicketr, on 02/21/2008, -4/+8How is Mario running fast??? You can't have that feature, because there is the directional pad and one button which I'm guessing is "jump". And how would he shoot fireballs? Which button is that? There's only one button on the controller people.
- monkeyangst, on 02/21/2008, -0/+4Ah, yes, that's what I was wondering. I (mis)remembered Pitfall as having side-scrolling action, but now that I read your comment I remember that's exactly how it behaved. It was always screen-by-screen.
