- KingGoonie, on 10/16/2007, -4/+26No one ever really wins the console wars. They win the console battles. I mean look first it was atari, then nintendo, then sega for a while with genesis until SNES beat that out around the time of MK2 so then it was nintendo again. Then it was sony, now it appears it will be nintendo again. Its an ongoing war through the generations where the winners keep changing.
And what will happen? I dunno... hmm... is it because Sony kicked such ass last gen that Nintendo decided to go in this new change of gaming direction? Is it because Sony kicked ass so much that they themselves got too cocky and shot themselves in the foot with the ps3? Or would these things have happened anyway? I think the wii is the first system that could be a huge change in the gaming world in that its a different type of gaming. I mean when the ps1 won... how did that really affect gaming overall? More people were immediatley interested in the ps2 maybe... but really how did it affect it as a whole? - daftfunk1, on 10/16/2007, -3/+21Nintendo was never really out of the race. The Gamecube did not sell as well as planned but it was still a good console. If Microsoft and Sony don't win the war it means nothing. Microsoft is still Microsoft and Sony is still Sony. If Nintendo fails or loses then they really suffer. They are a gaming company, their competitors are huge companies with many products, consoles are just another project. Nintendo is strictly a gaming company. I hope the Wii remains to win the console war.
- hokeywebb22, on 10/15/2007, -3/+12Digg needs a video section.
- gfindlay, on 10/15/2007, -4/+8I can't believe this 25 second video is getting dugg
- atomicpoet, on 10/15/2007, -0/+4If Nintendo wins the console war, Sony and Microsoft will have to realize that they can't rely on brute force to carry them through next time. Both companies will have to justify to their investors the business plan of selling consoles at a loss. They'll have to look at low cost innovations that will decide the fate of their next console. Perhaps Microsoft will exit the console industry. Perhaps Sony will stop trying to use video games to push their formats. Or maybe not. I don't know. He who looks through crystal ball shall later eat glass.
- Travisty2012, on 10/15/2007, -0/+4I HATE console wars. I wish there could be more focus on games and less on shoving new and improved hardware down our throat every couple years. There have been great games on all the systems. I want to see more emphasis on game play and less on hardware advancements. A piece of crap game run on $1000 hardware is still a piece of crap game. I think Nintendo recognized this and now we have the Wii...
- EvanVolm, on 10/15/2007, -2/+5God I hope next-gen won't be all about motion sensing. It's Nintendo's thing. Leave it to Nintendo.
- AJH16, on 10/15/2007, -0/+3You're wrong. Sony owns 4 movie studios, the Blu-ray format, a computer line, TV lines, audio lines, professional camera, etc, etc, etc. Oh and also Sony owns BMG and several other record companies.
- mywhitenoise, on 10/20/2007, -4/+6What the ***** are you talking about? I hate my Wii, I don't even want to waste my time playing any games on it besides Smash Bros. and Galaxy (Metroid is ***** BORRRRRINNGGG), but I'm not stupid enough to make ***** comments like that. It's a well known fact that Wii is outselling the competition.
- tavisjohn, on 10/15/2007, -0/+2There is no Console War. Most people have 2 of the top 3 consoles. And some people have all three!
From the last generation my house has the PS2, The Game Cube, and an XBox!
From this new Generation we have a Wii. The PS3 is out of the running for this house because of the insane pricepoint, the fact that NO game out there uses a majority of the "Power" that it possesses, and there are no games that interest us.
As for the 360, it is a possibility that maybe, eventually, one may find it's way into our home. But we are in no hurry to get one. Maybe when the next generation comes out and I can snag one for under $150.00 and then start playing them. - coheedcollapse, on 10/15/2007, -0/+2But it'll have a gimmicky controller and the same graphics capabilities as the PS3. Also - a 70 to 1 crappy game to good game ratio.
- inactive, on 10/15/2007, -0/+1Life will go on as usual...
- markgl, on 10/15/2007, -0/+1they'll never be a winner, there has never been a winner before. you may say xbox sold x amount but I don't want an xbox. its a matter of opinion. I suppose you can say the winner is determined by the amount of units sold, but who freakin cares??? They all have their uniqueness about them and I can't wait to see the next generation of consoles after Wii, 360 and ps3. There will be a new war then!
- coheedcollapse, on 10/15/2007, -1/+2Although I'm not sure how true Morphine's comment is, I think we're going to have to consider another element during this console war- software sold. We know Wii consoles are being sold like mad, but the fact is, not many of the purchasers are going to pick up more than a few games for the system past Wii Sports.
From what I recall, both the PS3 and the 360 are already beating (or at least very close with) the wii when it comes to game sales.
Not that it matters to Nintendo since they're already making a profit on every console sold. - vertinox, on 10/15/2007, -0/+1@"No one ever really wins the console wars."
But you can loose a console war. Take 3DO, Sega, and Atari for example. - whatthefu, on 10/15/2007, -0/+1Nintendo still has all of its first party characters which, even if they lose console battles, will jettison them into the next-gen. Microsoft has been pretty consistent with their console having a large amount good games, so if they keep that reputation they could win this generation of console wars. Sony is a dark cloud looming over both consoles with all of its potential, but right now it's barely in it. So it's between the Wii and 360, and they're both completely different gaming preferences. The 360 is more classic and Xbox Live is a plus, while the Wii is more innovative and partyish.
- freakstyle571, on 10/15/2007, -0/+1I can agree to that actually... I'v owned most of Nintendo's products in the past and to be honest, the console itself has usually ben ugly and underpowered compared to the competition. But the games.... Oooohh the games. They are amazing! Remember the Game Gear? superior to the game boy, Just imagine how cool it would have been to play all the classic gameboy games on it instead of the awkward monochrome screen of the GB? Games is where ninendo excels. They should stick to it.
- IndigoMoss, on 10/15/2007, -0/+1I don't know why you are getting dugg down, you make some great points.
- Jomwilli, on 10/15/2007, -0/+1How would we know, and who would really care? Apparently the only people that do is KingGoonie's company.
- spawnfree, on 10/15/2007, -0/+1there will be a shareholder revolt if the 360 ends its life with a negative profit.
Microsoft are pissing away billions in an attempt to corner the market so they can make the billions back; its an insane business model.
Nintendo make fun games and consoles at a profit, so they will be around for a long time. - IndigoMoss, on 10/15/2007, -0/+1Your first paragraph was pretty much dead on, Nintendo usually never sells at a loss and they still make a crap ton of money either way. I'd also have to agree that N64 was better than PS1, because the only games I can go back to and play on the PS1 are Final Fantasy games and some select other RPG games without wanting to punch myself in the face, but I still have my N64 hooked up and we play Mario 64 and No Mercy all the time.
Your second paragraph was incorrect and AJH16 has the correct statement. - inactive, on 10/15/2007, -0/+1People don't appreciate that the wii has brought more people into the gaming world, much more than the 360 and ps3. It's a business move but just any company couldn't do it. folks who never really played vg are trying it out and that's only the first step, next thing you know some 40 year old dude is pwnorizing you on xbl, or mgsonline, or brawl.
and of course you have to leave out the grannies out of this - Hoffmangler, on 10/15/2007, -0/+0The console wars are a myth. It's only used by news outlets to create controversy and sell advertising time. According to sales figures the PS2 is still winning the "console wars."
- inactive, on 10/15/2007, -1/+1For the 74 of you who dug this, from the time I am posting this comment, are a bunch of moronic, stupid, pointless wastes of conceived sperm on this planet. That was the most pointless video I have ever seen.
- Step1Mark, on 10/15/2007, -2/+2Dumb video but a decent topic to be discussed. If they win does that mean the Xbox 720 will have motion sensing or the Eye toy will be used to play Resistance 2 or 3? We can easily assume the Wii successor will build on the ideas put in place by the Wii but will the competition follow their lead?
- charlescheese, on 10/17/2007, -3/+3I agree, I'm very very tired of motion sensing. I don't mind a little here and there, like the falling part in Ratchet, but swinging the sword in Zelda was unbearable. I hate it when it's a core part of the gameplay. As a neat little added novelty, it can be fun...but I'm really just getting tired of it.
- JasonCox, on 10/15/2007, -2/+2"What if the Wii wins the console wars?"
The PS4 wont cost $900 USD? - KingGoonie, on 10/15/2007, -8/+5Nintendo will never fail. Like you said GC & N64 may not have sold as well as the competitor... but they were great consoles (N64 way better then PSX in my opinion.... PS2 and GC about even) and they sold well enough. And Nintendo still dominates the handheld market so overall I think has always made the most money each generation because of that and they make more profit per hardware sold.
And I know what your saying about Sony & Microsoft having games as just part of their overall company... but correct me if I'm wrong, the Playstations have become the bulk of the Sony company. I know its a huge company with cameras, tvs, dvd players, etc... But I thought I read a few times through the years that the PS1 & PS2 at least are where most of their profit was coming from... - KingGoonie, on 10/16/2007, -5/+1Lol, I know, I watched it yesterday not really paying attention because I figured it was a news article so clicked link, then tabbed over to the nfl scores... and heard the video, so figured oh.. its video... well really no reason to tab back over if its a news report thing...
So 40 seconds later I was like wait... so was that just the preview of a much longer report (like ya know the breakdown they give before history channel documentaries and stuff lol) but no... and I was like... well what was that? That didn't even really say anything... - inactive, on 10/15/2007, -5/+1Truly significant for your genre, yet NOT newsworthy for a Digg
Regrettably all hands
DOWN - Morphine7399, on 10/15/2007, -7/+2Only if you live in japan, currently the 360 is still out selling it around the rest of the world.
- Trat, on 10/15/2007, -9/+4Like it hasn't already won it...
What is Digg?
