- charlescheese, on 08/20/2008, -22/+65Those are pretty much the reasons I sold my wii. Not only did 2001 call and want its graphics back, but 2001 graphics stretched on my HDTV look worse than 2001 graphics. In fact, it's like a half step between psx and ps2 to me when you stretch the graphics on HDTV.
I really hate the Wii and all it stands for, and I camped out for one on launch night. What a disappointment that console is. - Brew, on 08/20/2008, -9/+42I was a pretty big Nintendo fan for a long time and the Wii is what has officially made me one no longer. When I bought my Wii I was excited; not only is this Nintendo's latest console outing, but this is something my girlfriend and I can play. And to that I have to give Nintendo credit, my family members actually want to play this more then I do. BUT, that is not very often; them wanting to play the Wii once a week is more then I want to play.
Nintendo gave the middle finger to any hardcore gamer. They blatantly took a Gamecube, added wifi and motion control and called it a day. A "Revolution" they called it at first. Motion control is a good idea and it is pretty fun, but it is not nearly as accurate as anyone hoped. You do not need to be a graphics whore to realize that they are just bad in most cases, there are a few exceptions Mario Galaxy and ummm....I will get back to you. The problem is once you get past the controls you feel like you have played all the games before. Metroid Prime 3... haven't I done this before?..Super Smash Brothers Brawl...more characters are kind of nice...Mario Kart....Ok, this is exactly the same damn game but worse. And those are the Triple A games the games the hardcore Wii zealots say look we are hardcore too, the rest of the games are just shovelware. - inactive, on 08/20/2008, -11/+3311. They lied about the Wiimote's capabilities, it needs another add-on for 1:1 controls.
12. You can't use a GC controller to navigate the menus, not even to start a GC game.
13. You can't exit a GC game without turning off the Wii.
14. VC games are stretched to widescreen if you are in 16:9 mode (widescreen TV), with no option to make it 4:3 original aspect (short of changing the display type back 4:3). FYI: 360 Live Arcade games automatically put bars on the sides when in widescreen mode.
15. You can't see when your friends are online, nor chat with them if you could. But they are going to release this "Wii Speak" to add voice chat, so you'll be playing a game and hear "hooooneeey, time for dinner".
17. No downloadable demos or add-on content, no place to store them even it did.
16. No good core games coming this year.
Thanks again for the clock... - ptsuk, on 08/20/2008, -17/+35Its just a crumedgeon looking for eyes on his site to increase his revenue stream. This should clue you in:
If you have followed my writing over the past few years, yet site was founded in March. Oh he "resigned" as news editor from Ziff Davis and marketing assistant for Gaming Today.
Don't bother going to the site though, I can sum it up in a few points:
He bitches about graphics on the wii (a nicely pixel a great game does not make) And brings up the old tired story of "game cube/duct tape/sensor bar argument, but oh lest we forget xbox and xbo360 upgrade anyone? )
He bitches about 3rd party crappy games (how this is nintendo's fault is beyond me) and whines about how punch out and pilot wings hasn't shown up yet.
He bitches about lack of online play and storage (has 92 on his xbox i'm sure which all he plays every day. games released on xbox live have a months life tops where the game is played over and over then it trails off......)
He nit picks little things like not being able to use a "traditional controller" you know like the xbox or ps3 (though game cube controllers, wavebird work fine.)
Like i said initially he's just pushing for revenue, do yourself a favor and skip the site. - itseffinkasey, on 08/20/2008, -10/+25All I see is another online fad. Hate ps3 love 360. love ron paul hate him. Now the wii? You people are retarded. Nintendo got its ass handed to themselves last gen and they knew they would get there ass handed to them again this gen unless they came up with something that wouldn't compete directly with the 360 and ps3. So Nintendo is very smart and I still love the wii and ds. If you want something for hardcore gaming go ahead and buy a 360 or ps3... or a dumb pc. NOW go ahead an digg me down for not going along with this stupid internet fad just like the rest. You people all fallow in a line.
- philipz78, on 08/20/2008, -9/+23I am really disappointed that there aren't better uses for the Wiimote than pointing or replacing button presses by shaking. 1-1 or not, the Wii remote is better equipped than what Nintendo and 3rd parties have used it for.
Also, why doesn't anybody make a full-blown tennis game? - socivitus, on 08/20/2008, -10/+24It's like this guy can read every PS3 and 360 fanboys' minds...and I like it!
- Rikkochet, on 08/20/2008, -3/+14I have a new policy of burying any story where the topic is one video gaming *anything* being "better" than another.
Grow the ***** up and let people play what they want to play. Video game evangelists are disgusting. - inactive, on 08/20/2008, -5/+14I probably will get buried for this... but...
10. The length of time it takes for the average gamer to get their hands on a Wii is still shocking. Although it’s much easier now, Nintendo still can’t seem to keep up with demand.
09. Nintendo whores out Mario so often it’s hard to even keep up with how many games he’s in. At the same time, some of the greatest Nintendo games of all-time have yet to re-appear. Where’s the new Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out or the new Pilot Wings?
08. Lack of decent online features combined with a laughable internal HD and SD slot.
07. There are more poorly made games on the Wii than any major system I can think of in the past two generations. I’d estimate that at least 80% of the current Wii games are total rubbish. Games like Ninjabread Man certainly don’t help the system in any way.
06. It’s more or less a Game Cube with a few extras and a sensor bar.
05. The Virtual Console has a long list of truly awesome games, but there’s several problems with the VC. The first problem is that there’s no room to actually download all the games you love. I currently have 92 games downloaded from Microsoft Xbox LIVE. Even though the Virtual Console has better games, I have only bothered downloading 5 of them. The other problem is that VC games don’t support online multiplayer. Without that support, I’d sooner find the old games at a garage sale for a quarter and warm up the old NES.
04. Wii Friend Codes are probably the most retarded thing they came up with. With all the programmers that work for Nintendo, I find it hard to believe that this was the best thing they came up with when it comes to online multiplayer. I can go back as far as the Sony PS2 and SEGA Dreamcast and find better online functionality.
03. Just when we thought Nintendo was improving their third-party relations, we discover at E3 that they kept all developers and publishers in the dark when it came to Wii MotionPlus. Instead of getting some cool games using this technology in the near future, we probably will not see any decent Wii MotionPlus titles until late 2009.
02. With all the crazy peripherals being released by Nintendo, they have yet to release a worthwhile controller for classic style gameplay. I also find that the Wii-mote is a bit small for people with big hands. I feel as if mass appeal continues for Nintendo, they have no plans to fix the little things.
01. 2001 called and said they want their graphics back. - inactive, on 08/20/2008, -5/+14So that's how you get your video game blog on Digg! Tired arguments presented in a lame way.
Truly front page worthy! - maidenforce, on 08/20/2008, -1/+10So, yeah - not even going to give my reasons why this article is pure rubbish, I could care less if you've came up with a million and one reasons Wii is not the best, as a fan of Nintendo I LOVE the Wii. Seriously, if you don't like it - why the hell spend so much effort writing about it. I can only assume you have some affiliation with another gaming platform.
- alishagg, on 08/20/2008, -1/+9I love the Wii. It's just fun! My oldest son also loves playing on the Wii and that was one reason we wanted a Wii.
How many of you enjoyed playing Mario? How many of you STILL enjoy playing Mario? If you still play it, I'm sure you're not even thinking of the graphics. If you don't like the Wii, then don't play it/buy it. Even I knew the graphics wouldn't be the greatest before getting one.
Plus, for some of the games, it gets people up off the couch! - Paranoidmarvin, on 08/20/2008, -1/+9The Wii is fun, I do like it.
But for when I'm sober, I'll stick to the PC - sevenslashfour, on 08/20/2008, -0/+7Why does everything on Digg have to be a ***** contest? Do we really need any more terrible, opinionated lists like this? Honestly?
- threepm, on 08/20/2008, -3/+9mirror? Down already. :(
- KnightMareInc, on 08/20/2008, -2/+8omg but you did you play the game where you can shake the wiimote randomly in the air?
- inactive, on 08/20/2008, -0/+6I disagree also. I actually prefer 360, but after watching my friends fall and bust ass trying to do wii fit, wii has to be up there for me.
- braveryonions, on 08/20/2008, -3/+810. It's in high demand. Is that a problem?
9. What's wrong with Mario? He's the classic Nintendo guy. At least they have a mascot.
8. It has a web browser, and games that support it can play online. Problems? And the HD is just fine. All it really needs to store are game saves, and it's ridiculous if you think you can ditch your N64 to play only on the VC. That's a big expectation.
7. Is it the Wii's fault that game developers aren't making games that you like?
6. "A few extra features and a sensor bar." Oh yeah, motion sensing is just one of "a few extra feature". Not like an entirely new control scheme or anything.
5. Same as #8.
4. You used the word "retarded" like a stupid jock. What's your problem with numerical IDs?
3. You sound like a little five-year-old, "I WANNA PLAY MY GAMES NOW!"
2. You realize that you can plug in a GameCube (that's right, there's no space in there) controller, right?
1. I was in shock for a second from the stupidity. You admit that you like the classics, yet you can't deal with graphics on the Wii?
You have no back-up for any of your opinions. I do respect other people opinions, but ONLY if they can tell me why they have those opinions.
Buried. - revjustin2, on 08/20/2008, -4/+9The Wii concept is a lot more than just hardware. It is an approach to gaming. It was designed to be family friendly, involve people physically, and attract people who AREN'T hardcore gamers. The fact that hardcore gamers don't like the Wii is a reflection that Nintendo's strategy worked. And..for the record, my son and I play our Wii about every day.
- Koushiro, on 08/20/2008, -0/+5Who the hell ever said the Wii was the Greatest System ever? o.O?
- inactive, on 08/20/2008, -0/+5Actually, digg is a site to share CONTENT, not 'news'
But, I'll take 'Topics That Have Been Flogged To Death' for $400, Alex. - inactive, on 08/20/2008, -0/+5Hate to look like a fanboy but 8 and 4 are the same thing and 6 and 1 are also technically the same thing with 5 being a cross over between the two of them and are always the same arguments ps3 and xbox360 fanboys come up with, unfortunately its probably worse than the average fanboy comes up as its mostly the same points rephrased at least they only use the same points once.
- Shiftyeyedgoat, on 08/20/2008, -2/+7What internet fad? People hate things on the internet all the time.
That's what this place is for. - ileftfark, on 08/20/2008, -10/+15I'm not much of a gamer, but I own a Wii and play it a few times a month. As a total gamer circa the early 90's I can see why the Wii just isn't up to snuff, but it's a perfectly respectable system for people with families (I always take it to family functions - the old folks and little kids both like it) or the casual gamer that doesn't want a game that takes two months of constant playing to achieve anything.
Yes, the games selection is weak, the memory is lacking, the graphics are ananchronistic, the online "function" sucks, but it is the only console that anyone can pick up and actually enjoy playing a game. That loses credibility in the eyes of a gamer, but there's a huge demographic of casual players that the Wii is perfect for. Nintendo sucks for not working with vendors to create better games, though.
tl;dr - To each their own - jasmus, on 08/20/2008, -0/+4Wii was built to a price point, so Nintendo could make money on sales of the console, not just the games. That restricted the technology a bit, and we ended up with Gamecube+. Button mashing has been replaced with stick waggling in most games, because developer don't want to bother thinking of new ways to use it. It's easier to port something over and remap waggles to buttons. Instant profit.
Nintendo went after the casual market, and pretty much grabbed it by the balls. It's now in the slow process of pulling downwards, but stopping just before it hurts too much. - HughesAP, on 08/20/2008, -7/+11If you look at the guys site he says Mega Man 9 will suck because it has bad graphics
- ebolaworld, on 08/21/2008, -0/+4You do realize the Wii has a wide screen setting? No need to stretch out the graphics.
- xkingADROCKx, on 08/20/2008, -1/+5No, no it cannot.
- SkippyDoorknob, on 08/20/2008, -0/+3They should appear exactly as they did originally by default. Why would you ever want your games to be distorted?
- spammishking, on 08/20/2008, -0/+3I can read your mind as well....and that's disgusting
- jasmus, on 08/20/2008, -0/+3I have no idea why you're being dugg down. Nintendo's market for this generation is the ignored "casual gamer". They've got that market. Don't like? Don't buy!
- baldboy7, on 08/20/2008, -2/+5I don't think it's name helps it's case.
- inactive, on 08/20/2008, -5/+8now i'm no fanboi but seems to me that #1 and #6 are the same thing
- MoralThreat, on 08/20/2008, -1/+4Fanboys are rampant on this post. Yeesh.
- JeffH, on 08/20/2008, -1/+4I like the Wii, but your examples left out one key thing that kills the Wii so far.
Games like Mario Kart and Smash Bros. are all essentially Gamecube games. The best way to play them is with a Gamecube controller. They're just GC games that Nintendo said; "Oh *****, we have to use the Wiimote in here somewhere". - inactive, on 08/20/2008, -0/+3I think he was just talking about Punch Out in general, which had a remake on the SNES...
- paulysan, on 08/20/2008, -1/+4Yes, I love Mario and Zelda and Samus and all those other guys. Unfortunately, I haven't gotten to see much of them, because Nintendo is more focused on freaking Wii music, which is supposed to be the shizznit! /sarcasm
- Aadain, on 08/20/2008, -1/+4But the problem is that hardcore gamers are the bedrock of stable income. They will keep buying the games, year after year, for a system leading to a certain level of reliable income over the lifetime of the console. And they will usually follow you to your next console and the next, etc.
While the casual gamers are more numerous, they are also more fickle. They won't devote massive amounts of time to playing games or spend too much money on buying new games. And when their time/attention is taken up by other activities, games fall by the wayside. And when the next console comes out, few will buy it because the current one works just fine for them.
Nintento really hit the lottery with the Wii, but they really need to do something to insure long term income and future growth potential. Once everyone has a Wii that wants one, their income will start to shrink very quickly and won't recover for a long time. When the Wii2 comes out, do you think all the parents and grandparents who own Wii's will run out to get it? Most likely not. Nor will the hardcore gamers since they have been snubbed by Nintento this round, so they'll stick with MS or Sony which cater to them. - Garofoli, on 08/20/2008, -0/+2Diggs do not mean the number of page hits... But hits ~∝ diggs (in theory).
- YME1280, on 08/20/2008, -0/+2I think you meant to say sexist for "Nintendo fanboys sometimes remind me of women..." But we get it.
- ptsuk, on 08/20/2008, -0/+2I own both a wii and a xbox 360. No bias here, I'd own a ps3 except for the expense and the overlap of 360 games.
For party games when i'm entertaining I whip out the wii.
For solo "console" gaming when playing halo, gta lost cities, etc. I play the 360.
However i also play many many pc games including MMO's(WOW, DAOC, EQ, UO, and soon WAR), and sim games such as casear, pharaoh, emperor but also include the regular shooters such as battlefield, TF, Call of Duty, etc, or mech sim like mercenaries, mechwarrior, etc.
I'm a gamer who enjoys all aspects of gaming and find it rather retarded people attacking ANY gaming for the sheer fact of driving revenue. No matter what a game needs good gameplay at its core or people will hate it, if graphics come along with that great, this also goes with board games, no matter how much you bling the bits and pieces in a board game if the game sucks people won't play it. same goes for video games. - SkippyDoorknob, on 08/20/2008, -0/+2"08. Lack of decent online features combined with a laughable internal HD and SD slot."
Technically this is incorrect. There's no internal hard drive at all. It's flash memory. - SpongeBad, on 08/20/2008, -0/+2Agreed. I haven't seen this many ***** games on one console since the Atari 2600. Why does Nintendo have an approval process if they'll just let things through?
- tyme, on 08/20/2008, -1/+3what's a wome?
- mohsenxp, on 08/20/2008, -1/+3The Mario-Kart Wii playing machine - or as I have heard some call it, the Wii - needs quality games. It can be a great console. But a console is pretty much dependent on the games that are made for it.
Upon release the Wii was a cash-cow. It was easy to program for and many low-budget developers jumped on the opportunity. The result? 100s of rubbish games which have severely tarnished the Wii's name.
I will carry on calling it the Mario-Kart Wii playing machine because that is the only game that it plays in this household. - inactive, on 08/20/2008, -1/+3no cod4 = FAIL
- hudy23, on 08/20/2008, -1/+3i own all 3 systems and a good pc...needless to say i use my pc more than anything unless you count my ps3
the ps3 is the best, and i mean best, DVD player i have ever owned, it has a 1.5 speed option and clearly was worth the money i invested in it.
My 360 is the only system i play alone and when i have company we might bust out the wii
in short, i hate my ps3 save for the sweet 1.5 feature, the wii is meh its nice to have, the 360 and my pc are what I personally play games on. - inactive, on 08/20/2008, -0/+2Good points, tired argument. Hell, this debate has been made by Yahtzee twice now (repost)
Can we please move on? - paulysan, on 08/20/2008, -3/+5I enjoyed his article, and he raised quite of the few of the things I had been annoyed about.
- h0ly, on 08/20/2008, -0/+2Funny thing is, it can actually host a website:
