- NinjaNato, on 11/08/2008, -16/+111They're number 1 now. http://vgchartz.com/hwcomps.php?cons1=Wii®1=All ...
- digitaldivinci, on 11/08/2008, -11/+100While I agree Nintendo is failing to keep the original market interested, I still think this was a pretty crummy article.
- fyzix, on 11/09/2008, -2/+65Buried for the following quote: "This is why I hate innovation."
- TheGooseyOne, on 11/09/2008, -10/+46Buried for just being a PS3/Xbox fanboy jackoff fest.
Look at the numbers. Nintendo IS #1. - vsujohn2, on 11/09/2008, -9/+40They are number 1. They don't need to do anything. End of discussion.
- mmittimm, on 11/09/2008, -1/+24I absolutely hated this article. Nintendo's doing okay, I say just let the wii do it's thing. The author clearly doesn't understand what the success of the wii is based on and that is the immensely broad demographic that it appeals to. Tone down the mii's? I'll bet 75% of wii users friggen love the mii's. They are unique, somewhat innovative, and really fun to make. (My sister and I just made every Arrested Development character :)
I'm not going to address everything I hated about this article but what it comes down to is that the author clearly has the wrong console. He essentially wants the wii to become a combination of the 360 and PS3 and if that were to happen, well it'd be a goddamn ***** shame because most people like it for what it is: An innovative, nifty console that anyone can play and enjoy.
If someone told me five years ago i'd be playing video games with my 58 year old father I'd have told them they were crazy, but here I am having a weekly golf tournament with the old man. And that's priceless.
/rant - theragu40, on 11/09/2008, -0/+23Who gives a tit? Certainly not Nintendo. If you'll recall, Nintendo is a business. Their console has sold the most units. The Wii is the defacto number one console. This article is silly.
- skywake, on 11/09/2008, -2/+25"in smashbros all you used it for was to select the type of game you would play"
no.... you don't even use it for that... have you even played the game? Plus, its a classic game that is best played with a classic control scheme. What the Wii gives is options and a few little extras that you would otherwise not care about.
and yes, there are games do take advantage of the controller. The ones that use it the best use it in such a way that you don't notice it is being used. The little speaker for instance, most people would have forgotten about the little crappy speaker but it does add a lot. When you are driving on a beach in Mario Kart (for example) and the wheel in your hands is shaking ever so slightly and is also making just enough noise to make it noticeable that you are on sand... you never notice these things, but when you do... that's when you know what the Wii Remote is all about. - Murdats, on 11/09/2008, -2/+22I consider myself a core gamer and I play on the PC, I think most PC gamers look down on their more primitive console brethren because your traditional consoles do what the PC does, but not as well. the wii however does something new altogether.
and I know I am not alone in this thinking. - ZackScott, on 11/09/2008, -5/+24Embarrassment? Which part? Being the only company to not lose money on each console sale? Having the #1 selling console? Having the #1 selling portable system? Having a console that is still sold out in most stores after two years? Having more best-selling first-party titles than the other systems? Having a title (Wii Fit) that is sold out at most stores even after several months?
- c010rb1indusa, on 11/09/2008, -5/+23Uhh they are number 1. I don't care how ***** the games are, fact is, they have a bigger marketshare in the US than the 360 and the PS3, and they're selling every Wii they make, why would Nintendo's Business Office change a damn thing?
- kagebutsu, on 11/09/2008, -6/+24how the ***** aren't they number one? Have you seen sales numbers?
- farfromsubtl, on 11/09/2008, -4/+22He's being buried... why?
- mattcoady, on 11/08/2008, -4/+21They're making recockulous amounts of cash right now. Why would they want to do anything different. It (the wii) is not even considered a part of the current console race because it's completely in a league of it's own.
- Murdats, on 11/09/2008, -0/+14when you have microsoft and sony coming out saying buy our console as well as a wii, then yes, you have won.
when you have the most successful console and handheld on the market then I would say you are currently number 1. - 33PercentGod, on 11/09/2008, -6/+19This is the problem. They are number one in sales, but not in gamer mindshare. Us people who went out and bought games like Bioshock,Orange Box,Fallout 3,Gears of War 2,GTA4,etc are the same ones who have our Wii's collecting dust on our entertainment centers. Nintendo has found it's market and it's casual gamers like soccer moms and old people, not us gamers anymore. They are rolling in the cash with their Wii Sports Machine and could give a ***** less about stuff that matters to real gamers like 3rd party support, online gaming, voice chat, and more. Look at the Wii software sales compared to the hardware sales. How many of these moms are buying actual games? Probably none. Which only adds to the lack of 3rd party support because of how terrible software sells on the Wii (not to mention the crippled Wii versions of games like Rock Band,TNA Impact, and others).
They'll find out the hard way next console cycle when all the casuals see no reason to buy the next Nintendo console because their Wii has Wii Sports/Fitness already and the actual gamers have moved on. Here's to another generation of Metroid/Zelda/Mario/Donkey Kong/F Zero/Mario Party ZzZzzzzZZZ *****. - Rockkybox, on 11/09/2008, -2/+15Ahahahhahaha, 'They aren't Nintendo fans. Because if they were true Nintendo fans, they would accept whatever Nintendo gives them, which is exactly what I do'
That doesn't make you a Nintendo fan, that makes you Nintendo's bitch - inactive, on 11/09/2008, -6/+19Again? AGIAN?!?!
Do you know anything about the industry? Judging by the article you do not. Do you keep track of the numbers? They are KILLING.
I am not a Nintendo fanboy, but just look at any of the recent market data!
If you decide to make a website about a certain industry, gaming, auto, pets or anything, make sure you study its mechanics! - hadiz, on 11/08/2008, -5/+16That's because it's screwattack. All their content is crap, except the AVGN which is only associated with and not created by them.
- bacon_skoda, on 11/09/2008, -0/+11the wii just shows how tiny and insignificant the "hard core gamer" sector is compared to the rest of the world.
- mmittimm, on 11/09/2008, -0/+11Do you understand what motion controls would do to Smash Bros? People would get hurt.
- inactive, on 11/09/2008, -0/+10You didn't read the article, I don't think he complained about the hardware or the graphics once. RTFA!
- inactive, on 11/09/2008, -1/+11Sony was number 1 and they didn't think of doing anything either. Now look at them.
- vsujohn2, on 11/09/2008, -0/+9Actually they did a lot different, just didn't help them. I mean having a 500-600 dollar console out of the gates isn't going to keep you #1 in the console race. I doubt Nintendo would be stupid enough to do that. They are about mainstream appeal and low cost. Sony was an ***** for thinking everyone should pony up for their excessive console splurge.
- MaTT2011, on 11/09/2008, -2/+11I'm a core gamer, and while im not constantly playing the wii the term "Quality over quantity" should be prevalent in everyones minds.
I have all the fancy 360, pc titles and whatnot and while they are great they still dont come close to the fun i've had with Mario Galaxy, Smash Bros, Wii Sports with friends, metroid prime 3, resident evil 4 (so much better with wiimote) and mario kart.
Being a core gamer doesnt mean "Has to be playing video games at all times" , being a core gamer concerns HOW you play rather than HOW MUCH. I seriously wish the gaming media would consider more than the current two, and false, extremes of "hardcore" and "casual" because its embarrassing, uninformative, useless and all around inadequate. - quasipolymath, on 11/09/2008, -2/+11No real gamer? Hmm, why does that sound ... familiar?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/No_true_Scotsman - domdunc, on 11/09/2008, -0/+9If you don't like the Wii don't buy one. Nintendo clearly doesn't need your custom. They were incredibly smart this generation in that they aimed their product at everyone and didn't just cater to the hardcore technophiles who want everything they buy to be bleeding-edge. If you are a 'hardcore' gamer you still have two options to choose from. The idea that the Wii 'hurts gamers' is utter *****.
- Ismith988, on 11/08/2008, -3/+122d games > 3d games
- nshady, on 11/09/2008, -0/+9While I sympathise with what this guy is feeling, his points are stupid. Bitching about the Castlevania fighter? That's not Nintendo, *****. Nintendo didn't port RE4. Factor 5 are making a new Kid Icarus. Suda 51 is making a No More Heroes sequel. I don't think they've really missed out on much by selling off Rare. Viewtiful Joe is Capcom, and was on PS2 too... it's not one of "their franchises". Clover Studios has been disbanded anyway, though I agree that a third game would rock.
It's also not necessarily true that it's cheaper to do things in real life than on Wii. Gym memberships are expensive, and it takes time to go there. Yes, it's not a weights set or anything, but it's a start. Clearly Wii Music isn't teaching you how to play an instrument, it's letting you pretend to be a musician. Learning to play and buying an instrument can be costly.
The reason they're ignoring you, Elmo 3000, is because a) you're a whiny no-name blogger (literally) and b) they ARE number one. They have no reason to change what they're doing. I have a lot of issues with Nintendo's business model too, but this article is just crap. - Brododium, on 11/09/2008, -0/+87) Stop porting games!
I loved both RE:4 port and FFIV (to DS)... they're perfect (if not better) re-creations of already awesome games. - TheTjalian, on 11/09/2008, -0/+8What the hell, this guy knows nothing.
"10) Tone down the Miis"
Uhh, they're not really that used much you know. They're used as an optional extra in Mario Kart Wii, and then in a few Nintendo channels, but that's it. All of the other uses are pretty much done by other 3rd parties. If they whore it out, not Nintendo's problem.
"9) Stop forcing technology on us"
Big WTF at this. The Wii Remote, while new in the gaming space, is hardly new tech and to be honest, if anything, they're *downplaying* technololgy. Wii Specs, anyone? Also, his rant about wireless fails, as all 3 consoles' controllers are wireless by default.
"8) Give us a challenge!"
Fair point, but then again, this a problem with the industry in general. Most games these days are *not* hard. You want hard? Play MM9.
"7) Stop porting games!"
Say what? Outside of a few "Play it on Wii" ports, Nintendo hasn't really ported any game since Ocarina of Time for the N64 (TP doesn't count, it was a multi-plat release). The Virtual Console is there because those pirating guys gave Nintendo the idea that the demand is there for online distribution of retro games. Simple as. The examples such as "CT DS" and "Resident Evil 4" are NOT NINTENDO'S GAMES. I don't even think they're published by them, nevermind actually developed.
"6) Get some exclusives!"
Uhh.... Trauma Center, Zack and Wiki, Madworld, Disaster, Conduit, anyone? I'm also sure there's more. Besides, exclusivity is hard to do for any company. In this day and age, it's too expensive to keep it to one console. 360 and PS3 have exclusivity issues.
"5) Get new third-party game manufacturers"
Uhh, you can't just "get new ones" out of no where. The majority of the industry is working on the Wii.
"4) Don't ignore your franchises"
They're not? Their casual titles are easier to make then their core ones, it's a fact. If they started pumping out Zelda every year, all the fans would bitch fit that they're not good enough. Hell, this was proven when they released a new Zelda every year from 2003 to 2007, and everyone said "Wasn't as good as Ocarina!" which was in development for FIVE YEARS. Get the point?
Also, author has no ***** clue what the definition of a third party is. You can't force Konami to make a new proper castlevania on Wii (even though they are considering it), you ass.
"3) Sort out your online play"
The only bloody decent point here. About time.
"2) We have enough casual games for now. Don't make more!"
Nintendo aren't really pumping them out by the truck load. This all the third parties fault.
"1) Shut up and listen to us"
It's a give and take relationship. Some fair points are made though, but then again, it's more of reiteration of point 4, which is lame. - Murdats, on 11/09/2008, -0/+8just because its there doesn't mean you have to use it, thats what shovelware does.
and one of the things I love is using the wiimote as a traditional controller, but without having my hands stuck together, oh and that speaker is quite cool, when reloading and you hear your controller go kchk as you load in your next clip does add to the immersion. - ladylarissa, on 11/09/2008, -1/+9They are supposed to come out with a new Wii adapter and controllers that allows for perfect one to one movement, so that when (for instance, Zelda) you move your arm, Link moves his arm in exactly the same way, instead of any sort of movement causing a standard movement (those of you who've played the Wii will understand).
I agree with this article though....They need more games like Brawl, with better game play and better internet game play.
Personally I would like to see a game similar to Halo online on the Wii, with perfect one-to-one motion and fighting people online that way. Mortal Kombat? - KingBabi, on 11/09/2008, -0/+8I'm afraid the Wii attach rate is fairly equal to that of the other consoles.
Source: http://www.gamasutra.com/view/feature/3841/the_mus ... - DarkStryke, on 11/09/2008, -0/+7There's this thing called the DS, it's the best selling console of anything out there. It also has games that are worth playing, unlike the ports or fps_clone #1010120121829182 that reside on the 360 and ps3.
- inactive, on 11/09/2008, -0/+7ALL I WANT IS ***** ONLINE WII SPORTS BOWLING.....
- darienphoenix, on 11/09/2008, -0/+7How have they 'sold their soul' if they're bringing more people into gaming than ever before?
Gaming isn't just your exclusive hobby. - scorpst, on 11/09/2008, -0/+7If Nintendo wants to be #1... Wait, they already are, aren't they?
- douglasr007, on 11/09/2008, -1/+7I love wireless keyboards and mouses. ***** you,
- coldmolasses, on 11/08/2008, -16/+22Buried because screwattack sucks!
- inactive, on 11/08/2008, -18/+24My Wii makes me sad. It sits quietly next to my 360 and my dvr. One lonely red light, will it ever turn green again? I don't even know where the controllers are anymore.
I would sell it but I'm sure that if I did, it would be announced the next day that a new 2D metroid would be released, a new donkey kong or castlevania, Mega Man X9 or a proper Mario game, none of this daft 3D lark. Sure Mario 64 was novel but it wasn't "really" a Mario game was it?
I know its a cliche, but my SNES really does get more use than my Wii.
"Nintendo... You've changed... You broke my heart..."
*Sheds a single lonely tear while sitting in a darkened room, clutching his NES tightly to his chest* - Noit, on 11/09/2008, -4/+10But he has such valid points! Points like "I THINK YOR CONROLR SUX LOL" and "STOP SELLING POPULAR GAMES YOU SELLOUTS". And him going on about the N64 days? I love the N64 as much as the next bloke, but with hindsight there were only about ten games that anybody ever played on it. I think the Wii is the most entertaining of the next gen consoles right now. Just a shame it doesn't do HD.
- FirstSnowJ, on 11/08/2008, -13/+19I haven't played a Wii yet, but I'm not really interested in playing one. I use to love Nintendo...Man, the days of N64 and Gamecube are long gone but I've never forget playing Mario Party 2 for long periods at a time, or playing Resident Evil Zero late at night. Those were fun times. Times when I would be motivated to go out and purchase those games because they interested me.
Now, I'm not even interested in buying a Wii...not one bit of it really makes me think "I really gotta save up for a Wii". I'll stick with my Xbox 360. - zacharytelschow, on 11/09/2008, -0/+6Amen. Nintendo was smart enough to realize that splitting 1/3 of the hard core gaming population wasn't going to sell many consoles, so they geared their console to be fun for a broader audience and hit a home run. If you're a hard core gamer and don't like it, tough beans.
- BradOFarrell, on 11/09/2008, -2/+8Nintendo already is 'number one' in system sales, both for Wii and DS in their respective markets. And this list is basically telling it to do the OPPOSITE of the changes it's made that have brought it back on top. Screw Attack is terrible and it feels like Digg(ers) will post/digg/feature any listacle about video games no matter how inane the actual content of the article is.
- FriedTurkey, on 11/09/2008, -3/+9Regurgitated crap from ScrewAttack. Has anyone at that site ever come up with an original thought?
- Projektorboy, on 11/09/2008, -2/+7Mario 64 was one of the most bad-ass thing to ever come from Nintendo. I wish I could go back and re-live the sense of wonder and amazement that game gave me. That was one of my most favorite moments as a gamer.
- crazyhorse13, on 11/09/2008, -0/+5If by selling your wii, you could make all that happen, I would buy it from you.
- mr138, on 11/09/2008, -2/+7Murdats nailed it. I had a nice long reply to why I agree, but he pretty much has it all summed up.
- retral, on 11/09/2008, -5/+10With the way nintendo has been going lately ("MOAR CASUAL, NAO!!") I'm not sure I want to see nintendo as "#1"..
