- RoroCo, on 01/15/2009, -0/+93I love playing online video games, but the idea of friend codes is inherently wrong. It is easy to remember MyLittlePwny and ImAChick when you are adding a friend. 45544888339990... No so much.
- trdrstv, on 01/15/2009, -1/+58You mean like EA's been doing all along ? Friend Codes are only compulsory if you want Nintendo to manage your online infrastructure. The Online EA games I own (Madden, Tiger Woods) have been using EA Nation the whole time.
- bigNtasty, on 01/17/2009, -0/+42What this article needs is a bigger graphic
- Leezus, on 01/17/2009, -2/+38Yeah, but what if I get Cyber-bullied!? Or Cyber-molested!?
I would much rather have a system restricted to impotency than run those risks! - jakereilly, on 01/17/2009, -0/+26Still don't understand why nintendo chooses a huge ass number you can't remember for friends rather than a simple gamertag. stupid.
- chaosblade77, on 01/15/2009, -0/+26If you think about it, it's incredibly obvious. Who is to say a developer can't use friend codes to access Nintendo's network, but mask the codes on the user end with a username of some sort?
- stridox, on 01/17/2009, -1/+26Dugg for MyLittlePwny
- kenshin128, on 01/17/2009, -2/+27Friend codes are dumb.
- xprojects, on 01/16/2009, -0/+20Nintendo, usually. They have strict guidelines developers must follow or the game won't pass certification, which means no release.
That's not to say they can't do it, EA does it and so does Blast Works, but the guidelines were met, still, in both cases. So there are workarounds that Nintendo will allow. - pclstyle, on 01/17/2009, -3/+20did i say you could give out my code like that?
- xprojects, on 01/16/2009, -1/+18I was going to say the same thing. "Blast Works: Build, Trade, Destroy" also manages to do level sharing without the use of Friend Codes.
- tech42er, on 01/17/2009, -1/+13The reason for friend codes is because Nintendo is trying to restrict who can contact who online as much as possible so they don't get sued by clueless parents. That's why Nintendo doesn't have most of the functions of, say, XBL or PSN.
- twiztidsinz, on 01/17/2009, -1/+11For?
- peestandingup, on 01/17/2009, -7/+17Good. ***** Nintendo & their kiddie friend code *****. I'm an adult, so how does that help me??? Sorry, but I dont wanna go on forums posting my codes waiting for a response.
I sold my Wii recently & friend codes was a big part of why I did it. - ryrocker, on 01/17/2009, -1/+10the worst in terms of friend codes would have to be animal crossing: city folk
it had SOOO much potential in terms of what you could do online...
but its a pain in the ass when you have to go online and find ppl with friend codes and you have to coordinate with them when you can go to their town and when they will be opening their gates so you can get their damn fruit (or chop down all their tree's if you wanna be a dick haha)
but yeah...
xbox live is still to me THE best online community... - Jmorris5ten, on 01/17/2009, -0/+7Actually It Will
- insidius, on 01/17/2009, -3/+10While I agree that friend codes are a pain in the arse can you please explain to me how having a string of digits such as xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx is somehow "kiddie" *****?
I would think it was a fair bit more childish to have a friends list comprised of "MrJiggles" and "pwNzu4L1Fe" but I guess that is just me.
I did not digg you down though cause I do agree that long arse strings of numerical digits blow. - LostOverThere, on 01/17/2009, -1/+8Its Hello Kitty Island Adventure isn't it?
But no really, I guarantee it will be The Conduit. - Sh0rtstak, on 01/16/2009, -1/+7Its about time
- LanEvo, on 01/17/2009, -0/+6Imagine: Instant Messenger
- tomato1324, on 01/17/2009, -1/+7i absolutely love my wii, but it's one downfall is the stupid friend code system. it drives me crazy that they didnt create a unified friend list like sony and microsoft did, its such a pain in the ass to exchange friend codes for every game i get iwth friends that i rarely bother.
- fyreboltx, on 01/17/2009, -2/+8That's great and all.. but most of Wii games I want to play online are made by Nintendo. And even without friend codes, Nintendo's Wifi Connection has a lot of problems (connection issues, no voice chat with most games, lag, etc.) that I simply gave up.
- OrangeTide, on 01/17/2009, -0/+6They didn't learn from ICQ ?
- skywake, on 01/17/2009, -0/+6http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/13/rumor-major-onli ...
not The Conduit.... and if it is I would be surprised. I guess at least The Conduit uses Wii Speak, so thats a definite positive in the online department even if it still uses Friend Codes. - gfunk84, on 01/17/2009, -0/+6Friend Codes are actually 12 digits. The Wii System Number is 16 digits.
- stufflebean, on 01/17/2009, -0/+6Not to disagree, but I still remember my friend's and my ICQ numbers even though I haven't used them in probably a decade. 18427462 and 22230623. I wish I could remember useful things instead :-(
- miralize, on 01/17/2009, -1/+6There is only one word for you, but the Diggers would deem it too offensive,
- Mantice, on 01/17/2009, -2/+7I really must say, the number system sucks. I could told you from day one it was fail.
- gcnaddict, on 01/17/2009, -2/+7@trdrstv: "Friend Codes are only compulsory if you want Nintendo to manage your online infrastructure."
See: "The developers of the title discovered that it was possible to access the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection without them" - juliandunbar11, on 01/17/2009, -3/+8pedobear, I've been meaning to ask - why don't you like other bears that are your own age?
- pyromcr, on 01/17/2009, -0/+4i hope that other developers will do the same...
- gcnaddict, on 01/17/2009, -0/+4*sigh*
The WFC is the matching system Nintendo employs. EA hasn't been using it. - slowmotiony, on 01/17/2009, -0/+4Hi guys, it's David.
- inactive, on 01/17/2009, -1/+4It only took the third party developers a few years, but they are finally doing it. They better endorse the Wii speak add on for voice chat.
- craeyon, on 01/17/2009, -1/+4GOOD cause those things are longer than a 14 digit bar code
- coyote1284, on 01/17/2009, -0/+3The question is: Is it a game anyone actually wants to play or more shovel-ware?
- homerang, on 01/17/2009, -1/+4Great! Now who's going to let me use Hulu?
- foltaggio, on 01/17/2009, -0/+33.14159265358979323846264338327950288419716939937510...?
- carlosos, on 01/17/2009, -0/+3I like the ICQ number system. It is like a phone number and you can always change the name that shows up on the friends list. Even my AIM screenname has my ICQ number included.
- gage006, on 01/17/2009, -2/+5Same. Sold mine last year because Nintendo STILL doesn't understand online functionality.
- OrangeTide, on 01/17/2009, -0/+3yes, 16 digits is more than 14 digits.
- Noit, on 01/17/2009, -0/+2I'm pretty certain that my copy of Medal of Honour: Heroes 2 doesn't use friend codes for it's online service. It uses EA's own thing. I'm surprised more developers haven't done this sooner.
- mr_ziy, on 01/17/2009, -2/+4All I gotta say is....FINALLY!
- OrangeTide, on 01/17/2009, -1/+3if nintendo doesn't sign your content, then nobody can play your game on an unhacked wii. also they will have the courts prevent you from distributing things that contain their trademarks. so much for putting the word "Wii" on your game box or advertising materials. hard to tell retailers where to file the game on their shelves if you can't tell them what it is.
- LostOverThere, on 01/18/2009, -0/+2Lousy joystiq spoiling my fun...
- Renton, on 01/17/2009, -0/+2Yeah, I came in to say just that. Medal of Honor Heroes 2 came out over a year ago and doesn't use friend codes.
- chaosblade77, on 01/18/2009, -0/+2Nintendo doesn't have any sort of content review anymore. Only a tech review. It's questionable which that would fall under, but either way I can't see them preventing a game from being put on the hardware just because the developer masked the friend codes. If EA can use usernames for their online service, I don't see why any other publisher would not be allowed to regardless of the service.
- aurorous, on 01/17/2009, -1/+3This game may well become the best selling 3rd party Wii game just from people buying it in protest of Nintendo's half-assed online implementation.
- inactive, on 01/17/2009, -1/+3lol EA
- veter, on 01/17/2009, -0/+2This is one of the worst articles I have ever read.
Not only is this a one-source article, but its not like the source is an actual source -- its an IGN podcast. A podcast that is freely available right now. Not to mention the fact that the author doesn't bother to go any further than listening to the podcast.
On top of all that, I'm pretty sure they're misinterpreting some information here. I could be wrong, but from what I remember, they never said anything about connecting to NWF, but just that there would not be any friend codes in use -- something EA has been doing forever. -
