- Chebsi, on 08/14/2008, -6/+397Awesome! Now I have 8 things that can play DVDs in my apartment!
- DawgMan93, on 08/14/2008, -7/+217So it can play DVDs... just doesn't have the Software?
Why not make a 5$ app for WiiWare or something? - inactive, on 08/14/2008, -10/+131welcome Nintendo....to 2001
- WestonP, on 08/13/2008, -3/+121Direct link: http://hackmii.com/2008/08/libdi-and-the-dvdx-inst ...
- Shirleycakes, on 08/14/2008, -2/+93This is more fun, see?
- diggerbez, on 08/14/2008, -1/+70Great, now can we have some more memory?
- pintomp3, on 08/14/2008, -3/+58i'm waiting for nintendo to release a wii with a built in clock.
- Zamfir, on 08/13/2008, -2/+53I prefer to have as few entertainment devices as possible under my TV. Thanks to the multimedia features of the PS3, I have 3 devices; PS3, Surround Amp, HDTV cable box. Nice and tidy.
- TheTaoOfBill, on 08/14/2008, -3/+49By the time Nintendo puts DVD playback on their systems DVD will be a dead format.
- coheedcollapse, on 08/14/2008, -8/+52Because if I'm going to spend $200 on a device with a DVD player in it it might as well play DVD movies. How hard is it?
Also if everyone thought like you, we wouldn't be playing SNES games on our PSP's.
The only reason you're getting a thumbs up from anyone is because rabid Wii fanboys are pissed that this article suggests that the Wii needs DVD playback and isn't the perfect machine.
All of this is moot for me personally. I have a 360 and a PS3 which both play DVD's already. - PleaseJustDie, on 08/14/2008, -1/+35Then you should buy Twilight Princess because its fun.
- Coercion, on 08/14/2008, -8/+42i have the console and enjoy it. but eh at this point does dvd playback really matter? who doesn't have another way to play dvds already?
- imasuperDOTcom, on 08/14/2008, -9/+42For all the things teh Wii isn't, I still love it.
- arunforce, on 08/14/2008, -4/+36Only 8? WTH, this isn't 1999.
- inactive, on 08/14/2008, -4/+34Seriously, I'd pay
- Manhaxor, on 08/14/2008, -4/+33DVD licensing costs money.
- DeadPlasmaCell, on 08/14/2008, -15/+43That would be logical.. Right now Nintendo is in "STFU we know what's best for you" mode. Just one of the many reasons I sold my Wii.
- BoneheadFarker, on 08/14/2008, -1/+28One less piece of equipment sucking down power. One less piece of equipment cluttering up your TV stand. And most importantly...because we can...
- gilbes, on 08/14/2008, -6/+32This article is BS.
All adding DVD movie playback does is add cost to devices because they need to pay the DVD consortium licesnce fees.
The PS2 and XBox were poor DVD players in a time when good DVD players were cheap.
The 360 manages as a media center extended and the PS3 had to have it buit in to pimp blu-ray.
Nintendo makes no other home entertainment products, so why would they bother adding functionality they have no interet of specialy in. The licensed the Gamecube in Japan to Panasonic for a DVD playing Gamecube and it sold poorly.
So why is this article BS? Instead of announcing a media player for Wii, it takes a stupid shot at functionality the Wii doesn't have because the company that makes the Wii doesn't do anything in that arena. - CletusTSJY, on 08/14/2008, -9/+35You guys don't already have DVD players? They're like $30 at Walmart.
- shutaro, on 08/14/2008, -1/+25D... V... D player? And you say it plays DVDs? Interesting...
- farmerbb, on 08/14/2008, -0/+21You can always just rent it for a day. You don't need to run Twilight Princess and the Twilight Hack every time you want to start homebrew - you really only need to run it once to install the Homebrew Channel directly to your Wii menu.
- CalcProgrammer1, on 08/14/2008, -0/+20They did that last year about this time, remember the 2.2 update?
- synik, on 08/14/2008, -2/+20Who cares.
I have a DVD player, my computer plays DVDs. My Wii is for games. - deaftly, on 08/14/2008, -4/+20Wiidiculous
- TheTaoOfBill, on 08/14/2008, -1/+17Ten I don't recall him saying when he sold his Wii.
I sold mine during the holiday season. Got 350 dollars for it when it was used. Then sold Wii Sports separate for another 45 dollars.
Suckers... lol - beesaretasty, on 08/14/2008, -1/+15I would think that the better news is that it could possibly play media off SD cards.
- AeonTorpor, on 08/15/2008, -0/+14Duh... hence, make an app that you pay for (cost of licensing).
- inactive, on 08/14/2008, -1/+15Um, yes... I use my PS2 for DVD playback.
- iofthestorm, on 08/14/2008, -0/+13Nah, it plays the DVD movies, I don't know what's wrong with your DVDs or Wii.
- jks52086, on 08/14/2008, -0/+13Under my TV I have a Wii, a DVD player, and a DVR. If my Wii could play DVD's . . . I would have less clutter. This is why having a Wii that plays DVD's is a good thing, not because I don't have any other devices in my house that play DVD's.
- inactive, on 08/14/2008, -0/+13don't most tvs built in the last 10 years have more than 1 input?, my tvs about 15 years old and there's a normal round socket, 2 scart inputs and theres a svideo and 3 phono inputs (red yellow and white at the front), want to change from playing dvds to gaming or vice versa, press the AV button on the tv remote.
- Rikushix, on 08/14/2008, -5/+18Because every "freaking electronic" that connects to a TV can play Brawl, right? Right!
- Dgen_X, on 08/14/2008, -2/+15Exactly, I'll stick with my up scaling DVD player with optical audio output for DVD playback.
- inactive, on 08/14/2008, -3/+15You're an idiot. Some of us are sick of dealing with tangled wires and everything.
- taterpeel, on 08/14/2008, -3/+15that always blinks 12:00:00 AM
- inactive, on 08/15/2008, -0/+12My coffemaker plays dvd's too.
- CalcProgrammer1, on 08/14/2008, -0/+12SMG (or any Wii/GC game with surround sound) uses Dolby Pro Logic II, NOT Dolby Digital. Pro Logic II uses some sort of matrix encoding to combine the surround channels into a stereo analog feed, which the receiver then decodes into surround sound.
Dolby Digital sends 6 discrete channels using an all digital connection (optical or coaxial) which is decoded into 6 discrete analog channels (5 speakers and one subwoofer) by the receiver's electronics. - Cwo655321, on 08/14/2008, -0/+11people that dont own a 360/ps3?
- Kimberlyyan, on 08/14/2008, -2/+13I suppose it's good for putting in the kids room, one less component to have in there...
- whoomp123, on 08/14/2008, -1/+12then you download the newest system update and the wii bricks
- inactive, on 08/14/2008, -9/+20Because we hate having to deal with the tangle of wires and constantly having to unhook/rehook stuff up because we want to switch from playing games to watching a movie. I have a PS2. It handles my DVD needs just fine. Nonetheless, it'd be convenient if I could watch a DVD after playing Wii games without having to dig behind the TV and having to mess with the jungle of cables back there.
- Pr0v0st, on 08/15/2008, -8/+19you mean your ps3?
- inactive, on 08/14/2008, -0/+11Because I wouldn't have to switch my input plugs around. Derr
- Crabsinmypants, on 08/15/2008, -3/+13LESS CLUTTER!
It's cool that you like to have 10 to 30 wires behind your t.v. stand, but some of us like to have as few things hooked up to a power outlet and sitting on the stand taking up space. Why have both a dvd player and a Wii hooked up when you can only have just a Wii? - mogebier, on 08/14/2008, -45/+55I have a little thing next to my Wii that I can play movies on.
It's called a DVD player.
It cost me about $30 and it's hooked into my surround system and works juuuuuust fine.
Why are people so obsessed about making systems do things they were not designed to do?? "Oh look at me, I installed Linux on my Wii, aren't I cool???" - BoneheadFarker, on 08/14/2008, -0/+10That's a simple problem to fix. Just buy 4 TVs.
- Namesbond, on 08/14/2008, -1/+11Have you ever read about why the PS2 stomped the Dreamcast?
- Rikkochet, on 08/14/2008, -1/+10NO! BAD MEME! NO MORE!
- inactive, on 08/15/2008, -0/+9I would like to have sex with my Wii.
