- solidwhetstone, on 11/07/2008, -3/+25I guess if there was any question before it can be safely said that Nintendo won this generation's console war.
- farfromsubtl, on 11/07/2008, -0/+15Gamers of all denominations are the real winners here.
- Smwbigboss, on 11/07/2008, -0/+12Basically its saying buy stock in Nintendo.
- internetcoward, on 11/07/2008, -0/+12i thought that was the point.
- Paranoidmarvin, on 11/07/2008, -0/+10Yes, you are reading them incorrectly.
There has been no PSP to DS spankage since 2005. - Atsumori, on 11/07/2008, -0/+9Interesting... I think I'm going to go play my DS now... still can't capture all those damn pokemon
- Smwbigboss, on 11/07/2008, -3/+12Mywhitenoise always trolls Nintendo articles. It probably stems from insecurity due to the fact that his preferred console is in last place.
- evilesttoast, on 11/07/2008, -0/+8If by make money, you mean increase stock value, then yes.
Thats a public companies job. - foofightrs777, on 11/07/2008, -0/+8PR spin if it failed.
- bioviral, on 11/07/2008, -0/+8Pretty awesome how the DS statistics eat up the GBA, often eventually completely whipping off the charts.
What happened to Nintendo's promise to continue the Gameboy? The DS was said to be an alternate system, not one that was going to replace it. - trdrstv, on 11/07/2008, -0/+7Most Money, Largest Install base, best stock performance...
Take your pick. - inactive, on 11/07/2008, -0/+7True that's what they said in till the ds became a HUGE profit for them. I am pretty sure the gba is dead with the DSi coming soon it seams that way.
- aguita, on 11/08/2008, -1/+7Assuming that these graphs are correct, the myth that wii is only selling hardware and not software is blown apart. These graphs clearly indicate that software sales for the wii are outperforming all other consoles.
- niceyuk, on 11/07/2008, -0/+6Theres plenty of good games for the Wii:
Mario Galaxy, Zelda, Smash Brothers, No More Heroes, Ghost Squad, Metroid Prime 3, Pro Evo Soccer, Okami, Boom Blox, Wii Ski, Resident Evil 4, Zack & Wiki, We Love Golf, Mario Kart, Warioware Smooth Moves, Warioland, De Blob, Maboshi, LostWinds, MegaMan, World of Goo
and Shawn White Snowboarding and Skate It due out soon. - onux16, on 11/07/2008, -0/+5What the graph says is ~2mil PSP's were sold in 2008 when the DS sold just shy of 5mil units the same year.
- tobikow, on 11/07/2008, -0/+4well said.
- Namco, on 11/07/2008, -0/+4The sarcasm is strong with this one.
- exnoctem, on 11/08/2008, -0/+3well, considering this article is showing an american tie ratio for the Wii of over 5.5 it seems to be that there ARE more than the 2 games you mentioned out there...
- jcholewa, on 11/08/2008, -0/+3I remember back last ... December, I think, when the Wii started outselling (or at least selling competitively) the 360 in the US in monthly software. I kind of assumed that people would stop with the "Wii doesn't sell" meme shortly thereafter, but it's taking a while to cease. Part of it is because while 3rd party sales *are* strong, they're generally subservient to Nintendo's own game sales. Also, 3rd parties aren't really giving the Wii any giant event titles, so the sales are being spread around among many titles below the Top Ten monthly lists, and the Top Ten is usually all you get in North America. So it looks as if nobody ever buys non-Nintendo Wii games.
- tobikow, on 11/07/2008, -1/+4...And all i got was this lousy t-shirt.
what? - PaperJesus, on 11/07/2008, -5/+86 pages, no.
- jcholewa, on 11/08/2008, -0/+2"tie ratio for the Wii of over 5.5 it seems to be that there ARE more than the 2 games you mentioned"
And since Wii Sports is probably not counted in the tie ratio (at least, not in America, since the numbers are based on NPD, which doesn't count that title), people are have buying on average 4.5 more games than GP suggested. - exnoctem, on 11/08/2008, -0/+2Sweet, thanks for telling me why i bought my wii.
And for all this time i thought i did it because i liked the games... - themastersb, on 11/08/2008, -1/+3When I see 4+ pages filled with text I also think tl;dr.
- jcholewa, on 11/08/2008, -2/+4The "third pillar" marketspeak where DS was just a complement to the Gamecube and GBA was an exit strategy. If it wasn't phenomenally successful, they could just say "okay, here's our real next portable", and nobody would have batted an eye.
- jcholewa, on 11/08/2008, -0/+2Of course, that may be ignoring that a toy is precisely what a console is.
- onux16, on 11/07/2008, -1/+2Red Steel, dammit!
- djpray2k, on 11/10/2008, -0/+1Really? seriously if you are looking for decent games and not a child (or buying for a child) how does the Wii beat a 360 or PS3?
- Browzer, on 11/07/2008, -4/+4The key measure will be how well Wii software sales keep up. There has to be something more than WiiSports and WiiFit.
- alsouno, on 11/07/2008, -2/+1yeah seems like its gained ground on hardware but not in software sales. xbox should dominate software sales for another two quarters and these figures don't reflect the price cuts either.
i think the ps3 should see a huge increase in hardware sales with their lineup of games but it will be interesting to see how the xbox price cuts effects it. - djpray2k, on 11/08/2008, -3/+2Most of the people buying a Wii don't know about the game line up or how poor the current list is. They see movie -tie ins with films their kids love and games that involve them moving not just holding a pad. In all, most Wii buyers don't see it as buying a console but buying a toy.
- mywhitenoise, on 11/07/2008, -8/+7And with a killer line up of games coming out for Wii and DS this holiday season (such as Wii Music, Wii Sports Resort, Kung Fu Panda 2, Cooking Mama, and Animal Crossing) they'll only sell more!
- Namco, on 11/07/2008, -8/+7Nintendo is the "RE: FW: FW: FW: FW: FW: Check this out!!!!" of this hardware generation. They got around to the masses and appealed to the most amount of people.
While MS and Sony towed the line eschewing innovation and paid dearly giving away marketshare to Nintendo and their shiny plastic toys. - vassar, on 11/08/2008, -3/+2Check back in a year, after the iPhone/Touch has had some traction.
- djpray2k, on 11/08/2008, -3/+2You don't get what I mean. When I bought my 360 U was deciding between games consoles, so PS3 (when it was due to come out) ot the 360. When parents shop for a Wii they are not looking at the 360 or PS3 as options, they compare it with other toys, kids toys and because of this game line up, graphics etc means jack, they want it because its the in thing and you move with it to do stuff.
- RobbleRobble, on 11/07/2008, -12/+10Ahh, my favorite part about video games: mind-numbing graphs and statistics.
tl;dr: tl;dr - djpray2k, on 11/08/2008, -5/+3This old topic again? Well the Wii has sold more buts its games are crap and won't be taken seriously as a console but as it has made crap loads of money I don't think Nintendo will care.
- 13tongimp, on 11/08/2008, -4/+2The portable gaming market is TOTALLY different in Japan/Europe vs the US and that is a huge difference in the market. The main reason is public transportation. More people in Japan and Europe use public transportation to get to work and therefore the portable gaming market inculdes those people because they need something to do while riding trains and whatnot. In the US we all have cars so the market is dominated by kids. Without a keen understanding of that difference these charts and numbers are meaningless.
- damndj, on 11/07/2008, -5/+2[What?]
- yamaneko721, on 11/08/2008, -3/+0I think its terrible that Nintendo is doing so well financially. I used to love Nintendo... But the Wii. Wow it's been a huge disappointment. The motion sensing controls are a HUGE gimmick, and there are only a handful of quality games on the system. I just hope that the developers that are actually trying and succeeding in doing new and innovative things on the other better consoles, don't jump over to Nintendo's side. I don't want to see more crappy games on a crappy console, but most of all I don't want good developers making crappy games when I know that they could be making awesome ones.
- cougar618, on 11/07/2008, -6/+3Buried as Inaccurate simply because the graphs are completely useless, and gives no information on the subject. The overly graph works when you configure it correctly, and not try to 'Add' it to the top. It would be much easier to convey the same information with 4 sperate bars, 3 for each of the systems compared, and a 4th for total sales. Or better yet, a pie chart.
Seriously, you get to page 3 and then he has 6 game systems and it looks like the wii is being outsold every year. Then he has a line graph that says different...! - nrox653, on 11/08/2008, -5/+2GC sales were that small? Complete nonsense. There aren't even any sources for this, and considering the number of people who have a Wii nowadays the sales numbers should be quite a bit more.
- inactive, on 11/07/2008, -8/+4I hope that was sarcasm , damnded internet means I can't tell.
But those games all look like trash to me.
Regardless they will only sell more... - mywhitenoise, on 11/07/2008, -7/+3No ***** it was sarcasm, haha.
- gaapgod, on 11/07/2008, -9/+4Buried as spam. Also, buried for referencing "amazing graphs" when they look like they were made with Excel 95.
- specialK16, on 11/07/2008, -11/+5All I got was PS3 is now better than Xbox360.
- TheRedDarren, on 11/07/2008, -7/+1So am I reading the first graphs incorrectly or is the PSP still spanking the DS?
