- falstaff, on 09/14/2008, -1/+64It's amazing that more than 10 years after the SNES became commercially obsolete, a list of the best SNES RPGs still reads like a list of the best overall RPGs ever.
- dekuscrub, on 09/14/2008, -1/+64Dugg Dugg Dugg
Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy 2 and 3 (I mean 4 and 6), Secret of Mana, Mario RPG....
Man this system rocked. - QsheiK, on 09/14/2008, -1/+49Mario RPG was incredible....and still is fun to play through till this day.
- Hellman109, on 09/15/2008, -0/+43The SNES is the holy grail of RPGs.
Crono Trigger, Breath of Fire 2, Seiken Densetsu 3, etc. are all gods of the RPG world - ZenAlbatross, on 09/15/2008, -1/+38SNES was, is, and always will be, the best console in history. For RPG's or otherwise.
- joehobbes, on 09/14/2008, -2/+35Holy cow -- even though I've heard of just about all of these, I never realized how awesome the SNES RPG library was.
Excuse me as I go dig up Chrono Trigger.... - highlymodified, on 09/14/2008, -0/+32Super Mario RPG made me the gamer I am today
- inactive, on 09/15/2008, -0/+31Super Mario RPG May be one of the best on any system ever, not just on the SNES!
- triferlinks, on 09/14/2008, -1/+30This is the best of this list ever
- rolandvvv, on 09/15/2008, -0/+26Final Fantasy 6 (AKA 3) is the best game in existence. Few games come close to its story telling ability and the characters are so fleshed out they could be real. I remember playing it 3-4 times all the way through when I was a kid. Now I have emulated on my PSP and I couldn't be happier.
- Haoie, on 09/14/2008, -0/+22It's a real shame so many were never released/localised until many years later.
Examples include Tales of Phantasia, Star Ocean, Seiken Densetsu 3, and many more. - phaseblue, on 09/15/2008, -0/+19I'm always very worried that I'll never be able to like video games as much as I did back in the old SNES RPG era again. Each of these games was like its own important little chapter of my youth ;)
- Isfacat, on 09/14/2008, -1/+17Shadowrun was one of my favorites. Once you get used to the control system, it made for a great game.
Anyone remember having to disarm the bomb in your head once it activates? I was "Oh Shi-" when it happened. - Slashered, on 09/15/2008, -0/+13Secret of Mana is probably my favorite of the bunch, the amount of hours I spent on that game was pretty ridiculous. Level 8 for every spell with every character and every weapon for each character, entirely unnecessary.
- NaziHatinChimp, on 09/15/2008, -0/+10It's a real shame that there are no respectful sequels or rereleases of either the Chronotrigger or Earthbound franchises. Companies are quick to put out the next piece of ***** while those sit on the shelves. No one really want to play Mario Strikers 18 people. It's why my Wii collects dust.
- idavidtang, on 09/15/2008, -1/+10A bit disappointed they didn't mention Secret of Evermore, but still a great list.
- joehobbes, on 09/14/2008, -0/+9Yeah, the PS1 has some good ones too, but I'm more partial to these 16-bit wonders than most of the FMV-stuff.
- Scrappy1850, on 09/15/2008, -0/+8where did you hide her body?
- inactive, on 09/15/2008, -0/+7Great list! The problem these days is that the games leave too little to the imagination. With the SNES era RPGs, the characters were low detail sprites, you didn't have voiceovers and the environments were minimal. This allowed you to use your imagination to fill in the details, like the main character having your voice, what a fire spell looks and sounds like, the way your guy swings his sword, etc... This really helped make the game your own.
I remember thinking how awesome it would be living in each of the different little towns that you came across. Especially in the Breath of Fire series and FF3 - internetcoward, on 09/15/2008, -0/+7illusions of gaia ruuuuuules. before my aunt passed from cancer we would play it all the time.
- AsadM, on 09/15/2008, -0/+7Terranigma was at the top of my list of those games!
- GutterMoo, on 09/15/2008, -0/+7Illusion of Gaia was one of my favorite SNES games, along with MegaMan X, Mario RPG, and Chrono Trigger.
- eshirt, on 09/15/2008, -0/+6Just to echo a few others - Dugg for Chrono Trigger, but sucks that they left out Secret of Evermore.
I want to buy a DS just to get Chrono Trigger again when it comes out... (already out?) - inactive, on 09/15/2008, -0/+6I had totally forgot about Breath of Fire
But no 7th Saga? not even to mention how hard it was? - joehobbes, on 09/14/2008, -0/+6Translated ROMs help at least a bit.
But yeah, it would be great to be able to play them localized on a plan-jane SNES.
We need some DS re-issues like Square Enix is doing with Chrono Trigger... - PueSi, on 09/15/2008, -0/+6Final Fantasy 6, Earthbound and Super Mario RPG are the games I've enjoyed the most playing. Recent games don't even come close to feel as good as those three, such a shame.
If they don't release an Earthbound sequel this generation I'm going to go crazy. - Valyn, on 09/15/2008, -0/+5Chrono was kind of easy, but man it was fun. I love the music in that game. You can find a lot of it now fully composed etc.
- Battletoadz, on 09/15/2008, -1/+6Chrono trigger is my absolute favorite. All of the characters were memorable in their own different way, the battle system was kickass, and its musical score is my favorite of any game. I can't die happy unless I see a true sequel or remake of that game.
- racketboy, on 09/15/2008, -0/+5Only not quite as expensive :)
A compilation would be awesome, actually....
I'm not holding my breath, but it would be incredible to have a Mother Trilogy on the DS :) - mojoel, on 09/15/2008, -0/+4Don't forget: don't use the slap patch on yourself, chummer. You need it later.
- swicken, on 09/15/2008, -0/+4I'd sooner sit down any day with FF6 then FF7.
I just enjoyed the games more. - HerzeleidSP, on 09/15/2008, -6/+10No Secret of Evermore = No digg.
- inactive, on 09/15/2008, -0/+4On the bright side, this could be a good reason for me to play on the Wii - download these games on the virtual console?
- racketboy, on 09/15/2008, -0/+4Except Square Enix doesn't like to bring theirs to the VC as they like to change more for them.
Like the $40 they want for Chrono Trigger DS. - racketboy, on 09/15/2008, -2/+6Um... you're missing the point.
- inactive, on 09/15/2008, -0/+4It rocks and I envy you for having yet to experience it!!! :D
- statrick, on 09/15/2008, -1/+5earthbound is my all time favorite game...
pops always kept my ATM full of cash...love it - xtothepowerofx, on 09/15/2008, -0/+4agreed.. it should have been on the list if only for the reason that (if i recall correctly) it was one of few games that would let you have a sensible number of letters in your name
- ParaSwarm, on 09/15/2008, -0/+4Not really an RPG.
- inactive, on 09/15/2008, -2/+6The only other consoles to give even a tiny bit of competition, RPG wise, to the SNES would be the PS and PS2. I tended to lean more towards the quirky titles, like Mario RPG and Earthbound. I just remember sitting in my room during the summer until 4 in the morning, until my eyes felt like they were going to roll out of my head, playing those games. This was in like, 2000 too, so I jumped on the bandwagon a little late and had a taste of the PS RPGs (Final Fantasy 7, and the absolutely asskickingly perfect Wild Arms 1 + 2) and yet SNES RPGs have both the simplicity and depth that made RPGs enjoyable. Nowadays, they layer too much stuff onto them, with crazy battle systems (For ***** sake, if I ever accidentally rent another card based RPG, I'm going to ninja-star the guy at the counter of Blockbuster with the disc) and too much.... junk. People may think that turn based RPGs need to die out, but I'm saying that they need to make more. Well, ones that don't suck, at least.
- Vectorkov, on 09/15/2008, -0/+4Indeed, SNES had the best RPGs hands down.
- ParaSwarm, on 09/15/2008, -0/+4I would hardly call Chrono Cross a worthy sequel to Chrono Trigger. Not by a long shot.
- xtothepowerofx, on 09/15/2008, -0/+4i used to think about FF3 all day when i was in school... couldn't get home fast enough to play it
- rolandvvv, on 09/15/2008, -0/+3when I was in graphic design in high school, I found a SNES emulator and played it during class.
- Starstryker, on 09/15/2008, -0/+3Indeed it was, but it's not an RPG.
- lead2thehead, on 09/15/2008, -0/+3Zelda??? A Link to the Past was freaking awesome.
- Ljay90, on 09/15/2008, -0/+3http://kotaku.com/5044185/weekly-wii-update-+-supe ...
THANK YOU GOD - SteveMax, on 09/15/2008, -0/+3Chrono Cross was a good game, but it wasn't good enough to be a worthy sequel to Chrono Trigger. A respectful sequel for Chrono Trigger would have to be the best RPG on whatever console it was released, the best RPG on the console market at the time, and remain on that position for years. Chrono Cross didn't deliver any of this.
- racketboy, on 09/15/2008, -0/+3If you are happy with those lists with next to no descriptions, be my guest.
I personally think Ack did an awesome job explaining why each of them was so special.
That alone makes it worthy of being on Digg. - statrick, on 09/15/2008, -0/+3cool, i played this game with my aunt also..she had all these great games at here house..
good times i bet
sorry to hear of your loss. -
