- xtreme777, on 04/22/2008, -0/+44The Guardian Legend was one of my all time favorite NES games. Easy to remember all powerful password "TGL" followed by a bunch of spaces!
- terrizance, on 04/22/2008, -1/+44Wow, I'm surprised I actually never did play any of these games...I guess I wasn't as cool of an NES owner as I thought...
- killbert24, on 04/22/2008, -0/+41With a name like "PRINCESS TOMATO IN THE SALAD KINGDOM" you'd think that game would have been a best seller.
- xombi242, on 04/22/2008, -1/+13Clash at Demonhead for the win. Loved that game when I was a kid. Looking back, it's probably not as good as I had remembered 18 years ago.
- sgtpppr, on 04/22/2008, -0/+12Metalstorm came out near the end of the NES. I remember Nintendo Power pushing it like mad. I'm pretty sure that issue had the poster for it. Hard to remember specifics, but I remember being able to jump from the floor to the ceiling like a comet. A great game. Clash at Demonhead was also quite good...just really weird.
- Grizza, on 04/22/2008, -0/+12The whole time I was reading that list I was getting more and more anxious because I was worried that they would forget The Guardian Legend. Thank God they gave it its due. It's been way too overlooked through the years. Hopefully someone (whoever has their rights) will start releasing the old Broderbund NES library on the Virtual Console. That's probably my favorite NES game of all time, with only SMB3 and Castlevania III rivaling it in terms of greatness.
- jglaser, on 04/22/2008, -1/+12Dugg for Metal Storm
- xeemo, on 04/22/2008, -2/+12Metal Storm was awesome!
- KaneElson, on 04/22/2008, -0/+9There are at least a few of them on nintendo8 (Web based nes emulator):

- chongli, on 04/22/2008, -0/+9As soon as I saw this post, I said to myself "God, I hope TGL is on it!" When I saw that it was #1, I just had to log in and digg this article.
***** amazing game. I recommend to anyone who has not played it: find this game, either in ROM or cartridge format and play it! - innocentsinner, on 04/22/2008, -0/+7I rented that once way back in the day. Once. It was probably the first 'adventure' game like that I'd ever played, along with Maniac Mansion. And I sucked ass at both of them.
- nathanchase, on 05/06/2009, -1/+7two of my favorites were relatively obscure - Crystalis and Journey to Silius
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crystalis
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Journey_to_Silius
- some of the most memorable music on the NES - Diderotten, on 04/22/2008, -0/+6That was the only one on the list I played. Hard as hell, though.
- Doctype, on 04/22/2008, -0/+5Always loved monster party, no one I knew when I was a kid really had it, I do not believe it is very rare, but it is weird as all *****.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monster_Party - Diddy321, on 04/22/2008, -0/+5Princess Tomato was one of those games that I rented 5 times or so, and each time I remember it being so awesome until I hit somewhere around 3/4ths of the way through it, and then always ended up stuck at the same point. If only the internet was around back then......
- vibrokatana, on 04/22/2008, -0/+5Damn you for forcing me to log in to bury you.
- sychodelix, on 04/22/2008, -0/+5I've played several of those games. Clash at Demonhead was a heck of a lot of fun and so was Metalstorm, but they were pretty damned hard once you got far enough along into them.
- NathanielJ, on 04/22/2008, -0/+5Crystalis wasn't obscure, it just kicked ass.
- GreatOne08, on 04/22/2008, -1/+6Xexyz
- plunderphonics, on 04/22/2008, -2/+7I was hoping to see some much deserved love for River City Ransom
- zinnate, on 04/22/2008, -0/+5River City Ransom was released Monday, April 21, on the virtual console
- xdeliriumx, on 04/22/2008, -3/+8I always really liked Shatterhand.
- Ellipsys, on 04/22/2008, -0/+4I feel compelled to add "Kabuki Quantum Fighter" to the list
- echonull, on 04/22/2008, -0/+4It's good to see TGL get some of its well-deserved recognition. I'd played a few of these back in the day -- Metal Storm, TGL, Demonhead, and Shatterhand -- and Guardian Legend still holds up the best after all these years. I still go through it once every few years and wind up humming the music for months after.
[edit] There're some fine remixes, too: http://www.ocremix.org/game/guardian-legend-nes/re ... - yrtsiger, on 04/22/2008, -0/+4wow i own way more the my share of nes games and i have never seen half of those till now
- bigmacur, on 04/22/2008, -4/+8now how do we know these are the top 10???
- andregriffin, on 04/22/2008, -0/+4Yes! In all the other digg stories about "Best NES games blah blah blah", I mentioned Metal Storm, and people didn't have a clue what the hell I was talking about. I'm glad to see it get some well deserved respect.
- humanerror, on 04/22/2008, -0/+4I'm glad I saw this article. I've been trying to remember the name of THE GUARDIAN LEGEND for years now. It was one of my favorite games, along with CLASH AT DEMONHEAD and one other where you were a guy with wings flying over weird sand statues in the shape of giant heads who shoot rings at you. Sometimes you could fly into their mouths.
I still don't remember the name of that one. - inactive, on 04/22/2008, -1/+5Clash at Demonhead.....I've been trying to remember the name of that game for decades. Dugg.
- phaseblue, on 04/22/2008, -0/+3Guardian Legend was seriously one of the best games on the NES. Glad to see it topping the list here. (Also Vice: Project Doom and Metal Storm were both spectacular)
- hashmoney, on 04/22/2008, -1/+4Gun Nac ftw
- 81v3d07g0d, on 04/22/2008, -0/+3I couldn't believe that the guardian legend was number one it was one of the most fantastic games I ever played and have looked for it many times with now luck.
- argonlightray, on 04/22/2008, -0/+3Clash at Demonhead was an awesome game. I think I still own it. The music stuck in my head for years.
- echonull, on 04/22/2008, -0/+3That'd be Legendary Wings.
Bloody hard game. - MrTito, on 04/22/2008, -0/+3Yeah, I'm pretty sure you're right about Nintendo Power and Metal Storm. I think they pushed Clash at Demonhead too, because I seem to remember that hype for the game led me to rent it. [Aside: wasn't renting NES games made out to be scandalous by the industry when the practice first started?] Anyway, like the article says, Demonhead was kind of overwhelming for a kid. Seems like I've got some deeply buried memories of Guardian Legend also.
- Philbert, on 04/22/2008, -0/+3Seeing this game there frustrates me. The box art looks really really familiar and it sounds like a game I would've liked, but I don't recognize the screenshot at all. It even looks like something I would like based on the screenshot.
- Bilabrin, on 04/22/2008, -0/+2Think shadowgate with tomatoes.
- Bilabrin, on 04/22/2008, -0/+2I remeber Star Tropics well. Good game.
What about Karnov? That game ruled and I assume it's pretty obscure as well. - brufleth, on 04/22/2008, -0/+2You're describing one of the power-ups (you could only have one at a time) which made you invulnerable when you did your gravity switch move. It was probably the dumbest power up. The one that made your blasts wider and stronger was the only one worth having.
- shiftless, on 04/22/2008, -0/+2Kickle Cubicle. Best puzzle game on the NES!
- tapeworm77, on 04/22/2008, -0/+2Rygar FTW!
- inactive, on 04/22/2008, -0/+2why emulators as a last resort? theyve come so far since the days of nesticle. im firing up nesterj on my psp to play a couple of these right now. what better options do you want anyways? id say its pretty remarkable that mostly every game ever made has a rom dump on the internet and you can play all of them right on your PC, DS, PSP or whatever
- duggdowncatisad, on 04/22/2008, -0/+2Ricoroll alert!
- wimmers, on 04/22/2008, -0/+2Bible Adventures - Vintage black cartridge - 3 games in one!
- KamikazeeDriver, on 04/22/2008, -0/+2Truly one of the best gaming experiences I've ever had.
- inactive, on 04/22/2008, -0/+2whoa and i thought for sure the list was gonna be dumb and obvious, ive never even heard of at least half of these. thank you IndianaJonz for submitting this
- anjinash, on 04/22/2008, -0/+2I'll admit that I haven't heard of about 2/3rds of these games.. but any list like this containing Clash at Demonhead means instant credibility. I can't count how many hours of my life I gave to that game as a kid. Totally underrated and under-loved. Looks like I'll be cracking out the ol' emulators after work!
- Bilabrin, on 04/22/2008, -0/+2XeXyz was weird though...I think there was this major cheat code too...
- cerealjynx, on 04/22/2008, -0/+2I like the option of playing them on my PSP
