- Elranzer, on 05/09/2009, -3/+54The majority of video game console "wars" always go something like this:
Nintendo vs (Atari, Sega, NEC, Sony, Bandai, Microsoft)
Anyone notice who's always there? - Petmc, on 05/09/2009, -0/+25And to think it all started with an Italian plumber and a well dressed ape.
- Khast, on 05/09/2009, -1/+26Yeah, now that I think of it, there actually are a lot of fun games on the TI-85.
There are a few Super Mario clones, an Excite Bike clone, Tetris, Doom, and a ton of puzzle games.
Though the TI-92 is where the gaming really got good. - nasmatic23, on 05/09/2009, -4/+28Its truly unbelievable what Nintendo was able to accomplish in 5 years. Sure the GBA was kicking ass all over the world, but Nintendo's handhelds have always Dominated. The issue was with the Gamecube, and the gradual drop off in sales and interest with each successive Nintendo release after the NES.
During the worst of the Gamecube's drought the majority of people thought the best change Nintendo had would be to continue to secure their niche audience. The sucess of the DS and Wii is astonishing.
Everyone can say what they want, but the environment and sentiment with gamers was NOT in Nintendo's favor a mere few years back and they managed to grab the world by the balls.
Plus they still make the best GAMES bar none. Nintendo FTW. - gunderoo, on 05/09/2009, -0/+22still into tetris...
- yeeaauuh, on 05/09/2009, -0/+20Wow...20 years of Tetris...Where has the time gone?
- thoughtsonthis, on 05/09/2009, -1/+19How about Super Mario. That might be as old as Tetris.
- Supernova36, on 05/09/2009, -1/+19I'm really surprised Microsoft beat Sony.
- MasterGrief, on 05/09/2009, -2/+168008135
- Sabin, on 05/09/2009, -1/+15How so? At least they aren't out there selling millions of defective consoles and then trying to say its ok by extending the warranty on them.
- Elranzer, on 05/09/2009, -0/+14Super Mario Bros - 1985
(Mario since Donkey Kong, 1981)
Tetris ~ 1985 (NES release 1986, Gameboy 1989) - themastersb, on 05/09/2009, -0/+13If you wanted to go further back it all started with some playing cards.
- Misinformant, on 05/09/2009, -22/+35Too bad the Wii is about as fun as a calculator.
- KAMiKAZOW, on 05/09/2009, -0/+12I'm not entirely sure. Not everybody is into WOW and today the Blizzard brand is mostly associated with it.
- apzdsx, on 05/09/2009, -1/+11I think it's odd if you go around shouting "Diablo 3, Starcraft 2!" at random strangers.
- choopie911, on 05/09/2009, -1/+10If only the seal of quality actually meant anything.
- apzdsx, on 05/09/2009, -1/+10Lund, Sweden sounds like a magical place.
- jeremymccurdy, on 05/09/2009, -0/+9The Gamecube might have not been a huge success, but it was my favourite console of that generation. It was a solid system in all respects, it just didn't get the developer support that the PS2 saw.
- TheBlueVulcan, on 05/09/2009, -0/+9" and I would even argue that the N64 was a worse console than the Gamecube"
How? The 64 sold roughly double that of the GameCube. Plus it ushered in some of the most innovative and revolutionary games ever made (Mario 64, Ocarina of Time). - lemur, on 05/09/2009, -1/+10Me too, but in a way I should have seen it coming. Sony is a company with a long history of dropping the ball. Betamax, minidisc, UMD, rootkit scandal--I would wager to say they are even more evil than Microsoft. They make neat, expensive gadgets that are not affordable enough for the masses, and in spite of making high quality units they always seem to suffer from some quality control issue. Microsoft has a long history of giving the consumer exactly what he wants, for better or worse; Sony tends to fight the consumer. In the end, good for Microsoft! I like them better as a game company than an OS/office suite vendor.

- lemur, on 05/09/2009, -0/+8Of course it sold more, but I think overall the Gamecube had a more variety of games and a larger number of good games. The N64 had depressingly few good games, which were admittedly freaking awesome (like Ocarina of Time), but looking back on my N64 days I can't help but feeling a little bit disappointed.
- lemur, on 05/09/2009, -0/+8@gowjo18 How could they have been worse? If anything the game should have looked exactly the same.
- u8myfoood, on 05/09/2009, -0/+7Okay so what if you sell farm tools?
(it says 'I sell hoes' for those of you too lazy to translate) - HalsMyPal, on 05/09/2009, -0/+6it all depends on what you rate a game by. i couldn't care less about how well a game looks as long as the look doesn't hinder the game play. I personally rate a game on how fun it is to play and accomplish the goals it sets for the player. The story and music can't make the game, it has to be strait up fun. Not that mass effect and bioshock are not fun, but playing those doesnt feel very different from games that are similar to them.
also Zelda TP, Mario Galaxy, and Metroid p3, dont feel thrown "together over the summer."
You can complain all you want about the Wii and its inability to satisfy you visually but you will never be able to deny that the Wii has changed gaming more than any system since the nes. Givin they had to go back a few steps by your scale of gaming to do that, they did.
the 360 and PS3 format of gaming is running dry you cant just throw more visual effects onto the same layout and keep calling it a game.
The wii definitely doesnt have the library that the 360 and ps3 have but the fact is that motion control and accessibility is THE FUTURE and the only difference i see in this generation of Microsoft and Sony versus the last generation are bigger processors, not much else. - lemur, on 05/09/2009, -2/+8Good point. Even in its worst days Nintendo had a strong following. Few people would consider the Gamecube a success, and I would even argue that the N64 was a worse console than the Gamecube, but in spite of that so many people I knew had these consoles and loved them in spite of their flaws. In fact, one of my friends still plays his Gamecube. I can't really say that about any other console.
- SalmonGod, on 05/09/2009, -1/+7Unashamed nintendo fan boy right here. They totally deserve it. Despite their success, they've never stopped being passionate about what they do. They have the most innovations under their belt, too. Most of the standard features of modern console gaming came first from Nintendo, and the wii is just a continuation of that trend.
- MaxMWood, on 05/09/2009, -1/+6It's BOOBS on a calculator. gg.
- OrangeTide, on 05/09/2009, -1/+6Reputable I think means "***** over customers and partners less often"
- Billions, on 05/09/2009, -2/+7Eh... Can you stop retreading that 'FTW' thing?
- SalmonGod, on 05/09/2009, -0/+5I wish more game companies would port/remake old games. There are a lot of classics that really deserve it.
Not that Nintendo really does too much of that. They have a lot of major IP franchises and they're just continuing them, and they change/update more than enough with most of their games to make it worthwhile. There are a couple exceptions, Mario Party comes to mind, but they're easily outnumbered. Mario Galaxy, for instance, is the best platformer I've played since Mario World on the SNES.
The three Game Boys each had significant modifications. I'm with you on the DS systems so far though. I love the DS, but I don't understand why there's three of them already that aren't very different from eachother. Still, I would rather console makers develop updates for existing platforms so that purchasing the upgrade is optional, rather than releasing a completely new system just as often, forcing you to buy it if you want to play the games. - sageerrant, on 05/10/2009, -0/+4Engadget got this from joystick, who got it from 1up, who got it from kotaku.
Why not just link to kotaku or the source? - frygar, on 05/09/2009, -0/+4It's something to consider - Donkey Kong (the original) was our and our previous generation's equivalent to Steam Boat Willie. That's huge.
- lemur, on 05/09/2009, -1/+5Well Nintendo certainly gets my vote. I love my DS; I love the variety of games, especially in the RPG genre. Sometimes I get jealous of the RPG's available for the PSP, but I think the DS manages to hold its own, and the price tags are easier for me to handle. Nintendo owns my wallet more than any other game company, as I find myself buying new DS games regularly and actually being able to afford it.
- lewzer, on 05/09/2009, -4/+8In terms of reputation, I think Blizzard would ***** on Nintendo. But I guess its hard to compare the two with one being a purely software company and the other being more hardware based.
- LocalDocal, on 05/09/2009, -0/+4@BlueVulcan
Double? My friend, the GCN sold 21-22 million while the N64 sold 31-32 million. That's about 10 million more.
Anyway, there seems to have been some debate recently about whether the GCN was better than the N64. From my perspective, both were pretty equal. The GCN had more good games (RE, Eternal Darkness, Animal Crossing, Pikmin, etc) than the N64, but the few good games the N64 had were mind-blowing (GE007, SM64, OOT, Majora's Mask, Paper Mario, Banjo Kazooie, etc). - sageerrant, on 05/10/2009, -0/+3It means that your console won't burst into flame.
Does that count for nothing these days?
Although you might be tempted to burn it after playing some of the trashier shovelware. - TheBlueVulcan, on 05/09/2009, -1/+4Because they force you to buy all that? What?
- Radan, on 05/09/2009, -1/+4It's actually rather accepted here in Lund, Sweden. Of course that may be the natural progression in a city almost entirely inhabited by University students, professors and hairdressers.
- gcnaddict, on 05/09/2009, -0/+3I'm not surprised that Google dropped (search monopoly, privacy, etc.), nor am I surprised that Microsoft improved (Windows 7 news, Vista's improving consumer image, etc.), but seeing Christian Dior right below Nintendo blew my mind. It looks like they're the only actual fashion house on this list as well.
- Mullinator, on 05/11/2009, -0/+3Anyone who can make a home console system (N64 in this case) durable enough to fall four feet onto a hardwood floor and still play as if nothing happened gets my vote.
- peasant1337, on 05/09/2009, -1/+3Seriously I think Valve has to be the most reputable non-hardware game company.
I rarely buy games and it's to the point now where I don't even have to think twice about buying a Valve game.
Any other company I usually read reviews/watch gameplay footage, but not for Valve. - chaosblade77, on 05/11/2009, -0/+2Maybe it's just me, but I find that hard to believe since the SNES is the greatest console ever... /opinion?
- sageerrant, on 05/10/2009, -0/+2gowjo18, you're being stupid.
I bought my Wii for Twilight Princess (and later NMH, SSBB, SMG, World of Goo, Mega Man 9...), and with component cables and a decent TV, it looks significantly better than any Gamecube game. - chaosblade77, on 05/11/2009, -0/+2I like how you and some others only make note of the one, single DS feature that was dropped (GBA Slot) but completely ignore the dozen or so new features the system has.
I also don't see why you are complaining about a company making a profit, since that's the entire reason they are in the business in the first place. It seems Microsoft and Sony have led people to believe companies should bleed money to make consumers happy. Why would Nintendo drop the price of the system when they are still selling at near-record-breaking paces?
Aside from that, I agree with your general points even though I disagree with specifics and your conclusion ("screw them"). - sageerrant, on 05/10/2009, -0/+2Eh, three DS's is cool, especially when they're cheap(-ish). Bought a Lite at launch, and just traded it in ($70!) for a DSi.
Yes, the DSi is mostly pointless, but it also doesn't have that streak that appeared on my screen, can run homebrew just as well (maybe better in the future), comes with a convenient if weak web browser, and has buttons that might well outlive me.
That last feature is the most important. It'll be a while before the DS can be properly and cheaply emulated (with spot-on controls, requiring a device with buttons and a touch screen), so this thing has to survive for a while. - sageerrant, on 05/10/2009, -0/+2You're being buried for it, but Wii homebrew couldn't be much easier. The most recent system update breaks the ability to add the homebrew channel, though, so be careful!
There's just something satisfying about playing old Nintendo games with a sideways remote, especially when they take so long to add things to the virtual console. - Trent0090, on 05/14/2009, -0/+2Or you could just click the Nintendo logo on the page and have it go directly to the list. I guess both ways work.
- kimonrecords, on 05/14/2009, -0/+2I thought the exact same thing!? this is the first time I've picked up on 6 degrees of separation (digg, engadget, joystiq, 1up, kotaku, forbes, reputation institute)...if nothing else, props for clear source referencing
- sageerrant, on 05/10/2009, -0/+2Should be Nintendo's slogan.
