- cusoman, on 11/15/2007, -0/+44"Coaster Mode"? You'd think a gaming site would read the manual a little more carefully - it's called "Co-Star Mode". You know, Mario, stars, co-STAR?
- loginname, on 11/14/2007, -0/+39My son will be 3 in December. I bought this game yesterday and he had an absolute BLAST playing along side of me collecting "star bits" and helping Mario jump by clicking on him. He got to be part of the experience and it didn't bother me one bit while he was clicking around the screen and having fun being part of the game.
I have to say, this was a wonderful surprise addition to the game and I knew that my son was going to be thrilled that he could play too!
The only problem I see with it is that he can hit the trigger and shoot star pieces, and sometimes he just holds down the trigger and wastes all the ammo, but hey, he's only 2. I'll cut him some slack... for now. ;) - GunbladeVIII, on 11/14/2007, -0/+34Parent and child mode? First of all, it's actually called co-star mode, not coaster mode, and not parent and child mode. And who the heck says it has to be parent and child? It's fantastic for couples too.
- freakon, on 11/15/2007, -5/+38I want to see Jack Thompson playing this with his 10-year old son...
- f3l1x, on 11/14/2007, -2/+34BREAKING: Deranged Lawyer Punches 10 yr Old Son In The Face Over Video Game Dispute.
FTA: "You're doing it wrong!" *slap* - Lixie, on 11/15/2007, -3/+32Coincidently, the parent gets the easy part and the child gets the tough part.
- Jeffler, on 11/15/2007, -0/+25This is actually a really cool idea, video games would be a lot more popular if more of them had this.
- tagtomlin, on 11/14/2007, -0/+21This is a really under-represented part of the market. All those gamers who have now grown up and have kids want to play games with them. There just aren't enough games that provide this and there is a big market opp for those who get it right. A rare example of it being done properly is Lego Star Wars. My daughter and I spent many fun hours playing together (much to the wife's annoyance) and I would buy any game that lets us play together in coop mode.
More please. - Ndiggnation, on 11/14/2007, -0/+17I discovered this by accident last night. I have a near 3 year old that loves Mario, but can't quite play many video games yet (other than games designed for his age). He loves to watch me play any Mario game, so I immediately showed him Galaxy when I got it. He always likes to sit down next to me with a Wii controller and feel like he's part of the game, so last night he did the same thing and we figured out that he could actually do some things in the game while I play..like collecting the star bits and coins (he calls them "munny" :) ). We played until late into the evening, as he was having so much fun because he knew he was helping me on screen and he wouldn't let me stop playing.
Thanks, Nintendo.. - loginname, on 11/14/2007, -0/+16I agree... although that only lasts for about the 1st galaxy. After that, you really do just get used to it and just expect it to work that way.
- Archmagus, on 11/14/2007, -0/+15I think a better term for this would be "Married Couple Mode". AKA, I get to play a game, and the wife gets to have some fun helping. And the best part is that it counts as together time!
- kiiwii, on 11/14/2007, -0/+14Parent and child mode? I played last night with my wife! It was a lot of fun. Added some interactivity for the other person instead of just sitting there watching. We'd switch controllers after each star.
- MCGrunge1, on 11/14/2007, -0/+13He's referring to the game called Portal.
- vtsvenjob, on 11/14/2007, -0/+13Mario Kart: Double Dash had something very similar to this. One player could drive while the other managed the simple power-ups. They only had to press one button. Aiming (forwards or backwards) was optional. This worked out very well.
- wtfgeekuk, on 11/14/2007, -0/+12Am I the only one not a girlfriend nor a child who's played Co-Star mode? My friend bought the game Monday afternoon and we've been enjoying ourselves a ton. Instead of just watching the game I get to help out; which consists of collecting star-bits, holding enemies, deflecting projectiles, and helping Mario Jump (which is a lifesaver quite often).
Co-Star mode is actually more fun than what some commenters seem to think. Although I will say, going into it I thought it was an addition to appease neglected girlfriends, but it helps include any bystander. - apetrie, on 11/14/2007, -0/+11Link it you lazy mofo! http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2007/11/12
- Meekus, on 11/14/2007, -0/+11This is actually pretty awesome for gamer dads and their kids. Anything that allows father and son time gets an A+ in my book. Great for a cold winter or rainy day when you can't make it outside. (Being in the not so greatest shape myself, I am determined my youngen doesn't make the same mistakes I did and makes physical activity a priority.)
- ripstuntz, on 11/14/2007, -0/+11This is such a great idea, allowing the 2nd player to help you but not hurt you significantly!!
I mean cmon, who hasnt pulled the "Oh ok little cousin you can play with this controller (that just so happens not to be plugged in) while I play!"
+1 Wii - inactive, on 11/14/2007, -0/+9This is actually great for my girlfriend as well. Shes bloody horrible at games but loves to play them. We often play sonic 3 and she play as tails while i run through the game.
- Ikon, on 11/14/2007, -0/+8I wish Super Mario Bros. had Co-Op when I was a kid :(
- GreyICE, on 11/14/2007, -0/+8Actually, they also had the ability to control powerslides. When the game got too easy (which it did pretty quickly) you could up the difficulty level by trying to complete a course while your copilot deliberately tried to kill you with items and powerslides. That was fun.
- Ndiggnation, on 11/14/2007, -0/+7I've thought about that quite alot too. I'm a dad, who is also an pretty big gamer. My 2.5+ year old son loves to watch me play games, but I always feel bad that the most involvement he can have is to sit next to me with a controller, (he can really only actually play Wii Sports Golf or Baseball, or Boxing). I've been wondering for a while if there are any other games he could actually play with me. I would definitely buy more games for the Wii if there were, so I can indoctrinate him in the ways of gaming. :)
- loginname, on 11/14/2007, -0/+6I agree, I had my wife playing along yesterday helping my by collecting star bits and shooting enemies.
- xler8, on 11/14/2007, -0/+6I had a blast playing in costar mode with my male buddies last night. It was great helping/interfering with them. There was a great point where p1 needed 100 star bits to advance, but p2 can shoot them out as stunners. So I kept shooting out exactly 1 too many star bits - thwarting p1 from completing that section. Good times. The holding/freezing of enemies/bullet bills/boulders is awesome too. This mode is a huge addition to the game.
- TheClassic, on 11/14/2007, -2/+7It may be lame and known to some, but it was news to me
- eyeWired, on 11/14/2007, -0/+5Heh.They've always had a co-op mode in games for younger players....it's called plugging in the second player controller and giving it to the kid while you play. I used this trick on my sister all the time when I was a kid...she'd think she was playing. Kids are so easily amused!
- reknaps, on 11/14/2007, -0/+5This is perfect for me. My 4 year old is playing all the original marios via virtual console. The wifey and I talked about getting galaxy, but I know for a fact that a 3d world like this will be too much for him. This would be a great way to help him out.
- jun2san, on 11/14/2007, -5/+9I just bought this game yesterday and while it's really fun, it's also one of the most disorienting games I've ever played. I felt dizzy playing it.
- NeoCortex, on 11/14/2007, -0/+4SMB3 was co-op. Granted, you had to take turns, but both players worked towards clearing the same map.
- tuxidomasx, on 11/14/2007, -2/+6if you can get through Portal, Galaxy is a cinch
- MissingScrews, on 11/14/2007, -0/+4You mean like Tails in Sonic 2 and 3? It is about time they made co-op for the lazy man!
- grumbel, on 11/14/2007, -0/+4Wind Waker had something similar as well, a second player could attach a GBA and then view a minimap, throw bombs and other stuff from the GBA.
- nickj6282, on 11/14/2007, -0/+4My 5 year old son and I play Lego Star Wars together all the time. It is his very favorite game. I get too frustrated trying to play with him though, since he is so finnicky and some parts of the game get him stuck. We still have fun with it though. This article makes me want Super Mario Galaxy even more not. I'm going to get it this weekend so we can play the hell out of it!
- threeboy, on 11/14/2007, -0/+4If only I could actually buy a freakin' Wii.
- scojerroc, on 11/14/2007, -0/+4my girlfriend LOVES helping me. it really is well done.
- jgoodstein, on 11/14/2007, -0/+3Its Great, My 5 year old feels like he's playing and I'm able to guide him and play myself. I hope more games take note for an additional mode for young and up and coming gamers.
- kete00, on 11/14/2007, -0/+3I wish they would do this more often in games. I am constantly trying to find games that are fun for my four year old daughter and I to play together. Lego Star Wars is great for this, but you can only play it so many times.
- Dukaso, on 11/14/2007, -0/+3Do any of you remember Kirby SuperStar? Recall the Milkyway Wishes game mode with its co-op play? I loved that game. My brother and I spent countless hours playing it.
- supernova08, on 11/14/2007, -0/+3When I first read about this mode I was quite disappointed in Nintendo. When are we going to get a true co-op mode like in Contra.
Well after trying yesterday, I can tell you is genious. My five year old loves to watch me play, but now she feels like she is helping. But the biggest surprise was my wife who quickly adopted to it and it was quite helpful, specially in deflecting fire balls from Bowser.
Way to go Nintendo, you manage to still surprise me. - Shawn4168, on 11/14/2007, -0/+3Kirby Super Star remains one of my favorite SNES games to date...very few games have such a great co-op mode.
- Ndiggnation, on 11/14/2007, -0/+3Haha, mine let all the star bits go that I needed to use to get into the Sweet Galaxy, all 400 or so star bits. He was thrilled to hear about a level made of candy, but I didn't have the heart to tell him he let all the star bits go. It was just "broken", so we'll have to do a "do-over".
- foofightrs777, on 11/14/2007, -0/+2The co-op mode reminds me of playing Sonic 2 and 3 cooperatively with my brother back in the 90s. I plan on buying my two younger cousins who are brothers this game for Christmas and I hope they can get even half the enjoyment out of that mode as my brother and I did when we were kids.
Good times...I wish this was a feature more games would include. - Toupee, on 11/14/2007, -0/+2Hell, I had fun playing with my roommates. When I was Mario they could really help out by holding enemies like Bullet Bills, shooting enemies off ledges, or saving my falling ass by giving me a little hop boost. As long as they don't make me hop right into black holes...
- hitdrumhard, on 11/14/2007, -0/+2must have been a phone interview...
- BenKenobi88, on 11/14/2007, -0/+2Yeah, great for parents and kids, but equally good for friends or couples too...Mario has always been a single player game...but the added co-op features make sitting on the couch less boring for the person not controlling Mario.
And of course, it lets them try to screw me up by making me jump at the wrong times hehe. - Ndiggnation, on 11/14/2007, -0/+2Good way to get your child or significant other into games, have them play games so difficult to play that they lose constantly, and never pick up games again.
You really think that *everyone* wants to play Bioshock, Mass Effect and Halo3 like the goofy 360 commercial says? (I have a 360, but that commercial bugs the piss out of me). - chewbaccapits, on 11/14/2007, -0/+2Been playing with my wife as well...Keep her interested...We switch playing at different point..great job Nintendo....
- RainNIU, on 11/14/2007, -0/+2I've never seen my girlfriend so engrossed in a video game as she was with Super Mario Galaxy. Usually she doesn't care to play them and sticks with Mario Kart if I bust that out.
- Shaflugi, on 11/14/2007, -0/+1It's really annoying in practice, because player two can force you to jump and spin in the air, completely throwing off any insane jumps player 1 may be trying. It just makes the game HARDER to play. It's an interesting concept either way, though.
- monkeyswitch, on 11/14/2007, -1/+2I would just like to say that I am a girlfriend, and I play the video games in my house.
