Hope someone leaks the source. - samfishercell, on 01/23/2008, -1/+64It's ok guys, maybe the Blizz just wanted to develop it on their own for the DS.
Welp...see ya in 10 years! - jjgames, on 01/23/2008, -0/+40Although it was homebrew, I would have loved to see any RTS loving on the DS. We need more of it.
- chingy1788, on 01/23/2008, -2/+33digg hates you
- hs112186, on 01/23/2008, -2/+32Blizzard needs to follow Westwood/EA's lead and release starcraft for free and let the starlite devs have their fun.
- DeviantDragon, on 01/23/2008, -0/+29Tell that to Korea.
- gldfshnpcklejar, on 01/23/2008, -1/+22Valve does these things right, allowing fortress forever to compete right along with TF2.
- aywwts4, on 01/23/2008, -0/+20Why don't they just re brand it? Blizzard doesn't own the RTS genera. If they make it a space battle game where you fight robo-nazis and space hitler, and otherwise use every single other starcraft game play element I think they would be on pretty solid legal ground... Because if ripping off a game was illegal, I don't think EA would be around.
- JohnDavis730, on 01/23/2008, -9/+25raise your hand if you surprised. common guys, don't be shy.
- PocketWatch, on 01/23/2008, -0/+12I read the title and teared up a little bit...
- gldfshnpcklejar, on 01/23/2008, -0/+11In other words. Someone else develop it and release it anonymously on bt :/ along with anonymous updates :)
- aceakm, on 01/23/2008, -0/+10Need a light?
- RAEP, on 01/23/2008, -0/+9Enjoy your shiny black ovular doorstop!
- 1337Einstein, on 01/23/2008, -0/+9Actually, with their upcoming merger with the less pc-oriented Activision, it might actually happen.
- wizardfeet, on 01/23/2008, -0/+8You're a bit late on that piece of news - Advance Wars DS was released in mid-2005. The second Advance Wars on the DS is about to come out though, and is called Advance Wars: Days of Ruin
- centran, on 01/23/2008, -0/+8just surprised it being stopped. A lot of times these things just go underground. It was a mistake to go public with it. They should have just released torrents and no website.
- inactive, on 01/23/2008, -0/+7My hopes for carrying starcraft in my pocket are dead.
- jacenat, on 01/23/2008, -0/+7because fortress forever doesn't use ANY media of tfc.
starlight used ALL the media of starcraft.
releasing media of other video games for free is the ONLY reason this was shut down.
look at project revolution: they do use media of starcraft (sounds) but they require starcraft to be installed before you can install pr ... - DeathfireD, on 01/23/2008, -0/+6It's taken them how many years to get StarCraft 2 in the works what makes you think they would work on a DS version this century lol.
- kingmanic, on 01/23/2008, -0/+6Starcraft still has tens of thousands of players still. To put that in context many new games don't have a user base as large.
- chaosium, on 01/23/2008, -1/+6Yes, it would have.
- AsSubtleAsABrik, on 01/23/2008, -0/+5I'm sorry if my pronouns were a bit unclear, but that's exactly what I was saying. Blizzard should leave the developers alone because they aren't hurting anybody. Let the fans do what they will. Blizzard is mostly done making money off of the game.
- DuxDucis, on 01/23/2008, -0/+5I'd buy a DS or any portable gaming handheld if there were more decent RTS's on them... advance wars 2 is the only one I can think of, and it's turn-based.
- statikuz, on 01/23/2008, -0/+5Blizzard has always (since 1998) been owned by Vivendi.
- r0ryb0ryalis, on 01/23/2008, -4/+9Wow, fanboy much?
- jacenat, on 01/23/2008, -0/+5if they use starcraft graphics, they would get shut down again.
if they create all the media for themselfs, they would stay up. - jer2eydevil88, on 01/23/2008, -0/+4Thank you for the share!
- CannedMango, on 01/23/2008, -2/+6Damn you Blizarrrrrrrrrrrrdd!!!
- Unnis, on 01/23/2008, -1/+5This isn't news. StarLight is a direct derivative of Starcraft in both copyright and trademark - don't be suprised.
Legends of Might and Magic (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Legends_of_Might_and_ ... ) did a Counterstrike clone properly - by not copying. - yohnstoppable, on 01/23/2008, -2/+6This wouldn't suck so bad if Blizzard would release their own version of starcraft. This definitely showed that it CAN be done, and will actually have really good controls on the ds. Hopefully it gets released in the future one way or another
- SiNN4R, on 01/23/2008, -1/+5Bastards!
- inactive, on 01/23/2008, -0/+4[Citation Needed]
- kingmanic, on 01/23/2008, -0/+4Fire emblem is good. FFXII: revanant wings is an actual RTS.
- khellendros1984, on 01/23/2008, -0/+4UltraHLE had the right idea. Just appear with a working version of the program one day, without clear indication of the author. Include source code for an extra bonus =)
- Tyrghast, on 01/23/2008, -0/+4Orders cap'n?
- DiFosfor, on 01/23/2008, -0/+3Dugg for the image.
- chingy1788, on 01/23/2008, -0/+3well you don't have to play at 640x480 anymore so thats a plus
and a more powerful map editor is promised - ChicagoDS, on 01/23/2008, -0/+3If were released on ds by blizzard it be the new ds killer ap
- tdous, on 01/23/2008, -0/+3Then you sir/ma'am, are a fool.
- zonk3r, on 01/23/2008, -0/+3Gee... didn't see that one coming. Too bad.
- Jibberwalk, on 01/23/2008, -0/+3Dude... I /just/ played Brood War between classes yesterday.
- kingmanic, on 01/23/2008, -0/+3"These draconian IP laws MUST BE CHANGED.. Blizzard are making ridiculous amounts of money with the crack gaming that they are currently selling at the moment, would it REALLY hurt their pocket to give something back to their loyal customers.."
For somebody like EA or the RIAA maybe, but blizz actually makes good stuff. They put effort in making stuff. They don;t just churn ***** out.
"even an old OUT OF DATE game like this, especially as THEY have absolutely no intentions of doing a ds port themselves"
IP or no IP. Even with the original copy right term SC would still be under copy right. The Startcraft facsimile was a home brew RTS which used SC graphics. It wasn't a SC port just a project getting some press because it used SC sprites. As well Stracraft is a trade mark and they need to protect it or lose it. I' am anit-DRM anti 99 year copyright but this one was pretty blatantly dumb on the starlite side.
"AND even if they did make the IP open to this modification, if they brought out their own we'd still buy it."
There are 2 extreme. One is the highly litigious insanity fo the US and 2 is the IP free china, where getting a legit copy is harder then getting a pirated hacked copy. On both ends Blizzard could not produce the same game. If the current US IP laws had existed for the last 60 years Blizz would have got sued by the estate of Heinlien for IP violations. A lot of the story elements are lifted from Heiliens book star ship troopers. If the nearly lawless Chinese laws were around Blizz could not make enough money to fund it. They would have made Warcraft 1 and it would have been massively pirated and they would have closed shop. You have to find a happy medium. At the moment what Blizz did was a happy medium. Did the starlite developers lose their house? no they were asked to stop. Is blizz using that IP? yes SC2 is coming out. This is the intended application of the original IP laws. To help a creator make money off a idea for a while. Ideally ~28 years after the original the IP's creation. the copyright lapses and it's up the company to make new IP, the only IP having now entered the public domain. Thats how it was. The 99 years is ridiculous. However we aren't at 28 years yet. Thus far blizz has used it as it was intended. - gldfshnpcklejar, on 01/23/2008, -0/+3I suppose you're right. I sort of ignored the artwork and just focused on the fact that they are almost identical games. I guess if they re-did all the artwork etc it might be allowed to go? Who knows. oh well, on can always hope. I feel bad for all the people who went out and bout R4's just to play this...
- Drood, on 01/23/2008, -0/+2I'm sorry dude, but you obviously know nothing. The game is still IMMENSELY popular. The Battle Chest is always going out of stock at my two local game stores. I mean *****, the only game Blizz have that's bigger than Starcraft is WOW.
- DavidGX, on 01/23/2008, -0/+2Goddamnit, why did they have to say anything before it was done? At least then they could have released it and no amount of C&D letters or legal threats would ever purge it from the internet....
- tdous, on 01/23/2008, -0/+2WoW players. They whine and whine, but keep paying and paying.
- iofthestorm, on 01/23/2008, -1/+3Seriously, it wasn't really that good and in fact incredibly buggy. The only thing it had going for it was the starcraft name and media.
- diggitySC, on 01/23/2008, -0/+2Not to be a link whore but Starcraft is still very much alive in Korea (and pro games are played all the time)
www.youtube.com/moletrap, http://www.youtube.com/diggitysc http://www.youtube.com/klazartsc - jacenat, on 01/23/2008, -0/+2what the ... ?
none of their released games since starcraft had any severe quality issues.
and all of them continue to keep up quite large communities.
starcraft: aside from balance issues prior to 1.04, a damn ***** great game. runs on os from win95 to vista without any problem
diablo 2: the kickass coop action rpg ... still. randomized environments and constant balance tuning made each character class and build worth playing
warcraft 3: a few technical issues due to agressive ram accessing in early patches, but since then the game has been a blast. it's the only game of which a "fun" map has ever made it to a major competitive tournament (dota is featured in the upcomming eswc 2008)
wow: somewhere around 10 mio active subscribers. the game is perfect even if you invest LARGE ammounts of time. their support is still overwhelmed by the continuous growth of the game, but since about a year or so, they can keep up pretty good.
so what game are you exactly referring to? - hardcorerikki, on 01/23/2008, -1/+3Blizzard did it?
Zerg rush them then !! LEROYY JENKINS !! -
