- atomicpoet, on 11/16/2007, -11/+83Good on Sony. I mean that. My roommate and I, the other day, were contemplating getting either an Xbox 360 or a PS3 due to him recently acquiring a 1080p HDTV, but neither of us are comfortable with the 360s failure rate and the uncertainty of Blu Ray winning the format war. More and more, though, I think we are leaning towards the PS3 due to built-in wireless, free online service, and less of a failure rate.
Still, I hope the other guys will learn some lessons from the Wii. Not all gamers enjoy FPS, sports, and RPGs. Maybe some of us like light gun, platformers, shmups. Bring them back, I say. - amrush4th, on 11/16/2007, -8/+61When you get a ps3 you already have every feature you could want out of the box. Now with the price cut it has made the choice to pick one up that much easier.
- mywhitenoise, on 11/16/2007, -10/+50I still don't see why people would not buy a PS3 because the blu-ray format might not win. I mean besides the fact blu-ray is selling 3:! more in software, the games will always be on blu-ray discs. On top of that, the movies aren't going to suddenly turn ***** and downscale if HD-DVD for some reason won.
- DatVillain83, on 11/16/2007, -14/+47Did anyone else notice that the word "Blu-Ray" was mentioned 7 times in this article while "Games" was only included 5 times?
/*Sign* - charlescheese, on 11/16/2007, -9/+41That was my thought process too. Also, for $50 more than the premium you get a bluray player. Hell, $50 is worth it to watch most of the movies that are coming out in all of their 1080p glory. You owe it to yourself. My wife and I spend $30 going to just ONE movie. We watch BluRay movies every weekend. So the $50 extra is well worth it in my book, that's less than two trips to the movies for us and the movies look significantly better than dvd.
So you get a bluray player, Wifi, 20gigs more space, bluetooth controllers that don't require line of sight, hard drives built into all consoles so devs can use them in games, and free online...all for $50. Your first year of live will cost you $50, so to me it's a no brainer now. Plus the PS3 library is plenty good now. If you go PS3 go out and buy Ratchet, Uncharted (I pick up my copy tomorrow!), Heavenly Sword, Resistance, and COD4. That should last you until next month when UT3 and the orange box come out. - dekuscrub, on 11/16/2007, -4/+30I really don't think the Wii shortages have anything to do with Sony's increased sales. There have been Wii shortages since its release, and the PS3 only recently had a spike in sales (right after the price cut).
I'd say it's the price cut alone. The Wii is really a different market. - MeatBiProduct, on 11/16/2007, -2/+24The only thing that sucked about it was the price and lack of games. The price point is gone and the games are here. Not that many exclusives but still - PS3 is worth the $400 for that setup - no question about it. I still don't have one but will be getting one shortly.
- cygnus183, on 11/16/2007, -7/+29PS3 outsells Wii in Japan last week! Granted it's due to a combination of factors, and it'll probably not last. But every time the XBox has a sale spike it gets like a billion Diggs.
http://www.vgchartz.com/ - VictoryCube, on 11/16/2007, -6/+28why the ***** are there still wii shortages?
- charlescheese, on 11/16/2007, -3/+24I thought that Spiderman 3 on BluRay was outselling Transformers? I'm 99% sure you're wrong about the Transformers thing. It may be the best selling HD DVD, but I believe there are a lot of BluRay movies that have sold better than that.
- exomni, on 11/16/2007, -7/+25Demand.
- mywhitenoise, on 11/16/2007, -3/+19Yeah, and how exactly would you succeed with a 360 in terms of movies, though? It doesn't have a built in HDDVD drive, and the external drive costs as much as some of the old Toshiba players. And like I said before those "profound lack of movies" will still output in 1080p.
I think computers are stepping away from the format wars right now, the only computers that will ship with HDDVD drives to my knowledge are Toshiba, Apple has stated they want to go with blu-ray. There's been rumors that Warner might shift to blu-ray only (by the way things have been going, I wouldn't be surprised if this takes 2 more years). And if Fox decides to put out Star Wars on Blu-ray that's an instant win...that and whenever Disney decides to release their classics. - directive0, on 11/16/2007, -1/+17No...you know what, I'm tired of that attitude. I've played it MS's way and got a broken 360 sitting here for my troubles. I'm ready to hear what Sony is willing to do to save face and redeem themselves. Personally, this is exactly what I was afraid of when the first Xbox dropped: MS cornering the market and making a 1 in 3 failure rate acceptable to the public. As someone affected by it I can tell you its NOT ACCEPTABLE.
Step up your game Sony, I'm listening! - KrustyTClown, on 11/16/2007, -1/+14You are wrong, Spiderman 3 out sold Transformers, and thats not including the copies that came with the PS3.
- jacksons98, on 11/16/2007, -2/+15Yes you do.
- cygnus183, on 11/16/2007, -2/+15Time Crisis 4 will be on the PS3 with GunCon 3
- Harrison88, on 11/16/2007, -2/+15In what way does it "suck"?
- ApokalypseNow, on 11/16/2007, -1/+13Indeed, the price was one of the biggest barriers to market penetration, especially when combined with the slow game release rate and the increasing lack of system-exclusive titles. It is sort of a catch-22 situation - fewer developers making PS3 games because of low adoption rate among gamers, and few gamers picking it up because of the lack of games. This situation is, of course, being remedied, but it certainly made for a slow start.
- goldfenix, on 11/16/2007, -0/+11Out of curiosity, are they still losing money on each system sale, or have they evened that out pretty well at this point?
- PhoenixAvatar2, on 11/16/2007, -4/+15You mean if you like FPS's, go PC, assuming you have the money for a good one. A game pad could never compare to mouse and keyboard.
- drlha, on 11/16/2007, -0/+11Exactly, just like I still enjoy my PSP despite UMD movies being an abject failure in the marketplace. Its for: you know, games.
- krische, on 11/16/2007, -2/+13I think what they are trying to say is they go hand in hand. People see the Wii out of stock, then see the now cheaper PS3 and pick it up instead.
- JackondaRocks, on 11/16/2007, -2/+13One more price drop and I'll get one (if I still can't find a damn Wii at retail).
- adventchild08, on 11/16/2007, -3/+13Wow a smarmy gamestop employee...never thought I'd see the day...
- Seidoger, on 11/16/2007, -2/+11Besides who's stupid enough to be like: "Oh they don't have what I came here for, let me buy something else just for the sake of it."
- Shawn4168, on 11/16/2007, -0/+9They won't be turning a profit on those systems for a few more years.
- staticneuron, on 11/16/2007, -0/+9Both of the companies are spinning numbers but it still seems as if blu ray is going to clean up.
http://bluray.highdefdigest.com/news/show/Paramoun ... - krische, on 11/16/2007, -2/+10So after 1 year of LIVE, you are paying more than the PS3. And I don't think you are too familiar with the PS3's online. It's not that different than LIVE.
- felman87, on 11/16/2007, -4/+12I like BC, but I guess Sony is still keeping the 80gb
- directive0, on 11/16/2007, -3/+11Sitting here with a broken 360 waiting to go back, wishing the PS3 had the same amount of games and I had bought one....
- Fallout911, on 11/16/2007, -0/+8I just got the 360 elite with the 360hddvd drive and I'm having a blast.
I also have a Wii
I will also get the PS3 now that the price is going down.
End fanboyism it sucks. - Sniper, on 11/16/2007, -4/+12Your right, it is stupid. PS3 is being sold as an entertainment center, use it as such.
- Misanthrope, on 11/16/2007, -8/+16I'll admit, I've gone from wanting a PS3 some day when it's cheap...to making it my next console purchase. Sony has really turned things around.
- krische, on 11/16/2007, -5/+13How is blu-ray any more proprietary than say DVD or HD-DVD?
"Blu-ray Disc was started by Hitachi, LG, Panasonic, Pioneer, Philips, Samsung, Sharp, Sony, and Thomson in February 19, 2002, with Panasonic, Sony, Pioneer, and Philips as the back-bone of the foundation." ~ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blu-ray#Corporate_sup ...
Just cause Sony was ONE of the FOUR companies that help make it, does not make it proprietary. - Derrelicte, on 11/16/2007, -0/+7Uhh...only two of those 360 titles you mentioned are 360 exclusive. By the same token, all three Wii games you mentioned are exclusive to the Wii itself.
Every other game you mentioned is available on PS3 (CoD:4, The Orange Box, Assassin's Creed, The Darkness) or PC (CoD:4, The Orange Box, Bioshock), and arguably has a better gaming experience overall on the two other platforms (more concretely, all FPS PC titles).
Yours really isn't a compelling argument to get a Wii60. The WiiS3 that you mentioned, on the other hand, will have a built-in BluRay player, and two guaranteed kickass exclusives (MGS:4 and FFXIII). That post sounds like it was unintentionally a plug for the PS3 and Wii combination... - zengonzo, on 11/16/2007, -0/+7I picked up one of the $300 KMart PS3s while my 360 has been sitting in the shop without a status change for a week. Going into the biggest month for game releases since before summer, no less.
Microsoft lost my exclusive attention in not offering immediate cross-shipments to anyone with an RRoD. - jacksons98, on 11/16/2007, -4/+11Actually you are more likely to see people with PS3s online. Last I heard only 40% of X360 owners pay to play online. What that means is even if your friend has an X360 there is a pretty big chance they aren't online. With PS3 everybody I know is online with it, why?? Because it's free. I honestly believe it's only going to be a short amount of time before Playstation Network eclipses the Xbox network in the amount of users.
- gabdewulf, on 11/16/2007, -0/+7In all fairness, ps1 and ps2 went through a slow software growth in the beginning.
- beters, on 11/16/2007, -0/+7They are still losing money.
- KrustyTClown, on 11/16/2007, -0/+7You forgot to say less likely to break.
- Erowid, on 11/16/2007, -2/+8Media Center PC/Blu-Ray player/Next-gen gaming consel for $400? Well worth it imo. Just got one last week and I'm very happy with it... Was thinking of building a media center PC, but, with the ability to stream video to the PS3, well... No need :) .... Still, it would be nice to be able to get MythTV front end working well on it, hopefully that will come :)
- krische, on 11/16/2007, -2/+8Resistance, Motorstorm, Heavenly Sword, Warhawk, Ratchet and Clank, Uncharted, all out for this Christmas season.
- jacksons98, on 11/16/2007, -2/+8Blu-ray is used for both games and movies. So that makes sense.
- Firehed, on 11/16/2007, -1/+6That's only true if you're in the market for a Blu-ray player. I couldn't care less about that feature (nor could I care about the HD-DVD addon for the 360), so its inclusion is completely irrelevant to me when considering the price of the machine. If you're in the market or would even have a use then yes, it's a fantastic value; if all you want is a game console, all it becomes is something that raises the cost of the system in order to prevent games spanning multiple discs anytime in the near future.
- krische, on 11/16/2007, -0/+5I'm sure they are still losing money. Does anyone know if the 360 has reached its profit margin yet?
- onimusha115, on 11/16/2007, -2/+7Highly, highly recommend Ratchet and Clank Future, its a great game, fun the whole way through. Plus if you really want to see what HD gaming should look like, that is the game to showcase it. It has to be one of the best looking games I have seen yet. Also, dont forget warhawk, that game is fun as hell.
- Microdot, on 11/16/2007, -1/+6.... and the gamecube went through a massive sales run... then died off almost instantly. tick-tock.
- sint4x, on 11/16/2007, -1/+6Yeah I agree its kinda hard when it says Now Playing: Warhawk
Found YOU - Butros, on 11/16/2007, -1/+6he's the consumer, he can use whatever criteria he wants to make his decision...
- krische, on 11/16/2007, -2/+7It's actually not that hard. There's actually a menu option that lists like thast 50 people you played a online game with. Just hit Triangle and Select Add as Friend and there you go!
