- coheedcollapse, on 08/14/2008, -9/+42I'm pretty sure that this hack has been disabled by Nintendo. Those of us who caught it early have the "homebrew channel" installed which bypasses this method and immediately allows the execution of code, but from what I understand the newest patch (by newest I mean a month or so old) deletes any save matching the description of this one and disallows the transfer of new ones onto the Wii.
Edit: I guess they've bypassed this problem (and did a while ago). I'll keep the rest of my post so that everyone else can observe my ignorance and because I'm lazy and don't want to write a comment pretending I had something important to say to cover up the fact that I deleted the content of the original post. - scottus0, on 08/15/2008, -1/+22I respect your honesty.

Although future updates for the Wii might brick moded systems, if Nintendo wants to be a dick.
- BlueSkyfish, on 08/15/2008, -1/+11You don't need to open your Wii and install any chips to get this to work. It's purely software. And as far as I know, doesn't void your warranty.
- bigpixl, on 08/15/2008, -0/+10… Grandpa?
- neotype, on 08/15/2008, -1/+10I JUST did this last night, and it was easier than I thought it would be. Most apps have been formatted for the Home Brew Channel so it makes things simpler. I'm waiting to try the Frets on Fire app for the Wii, I just need to get more songs.
- rdvon, on 08/15/2008, -2/+10a 360 with live is like a bunch of 12 year olds screaming obscenities to each oth--
Oh wait. - elitebmo, on 08/15/2008, -0/+8its not a conspiracy, its just ***** hardware that melts when it gets obscenely hot. also, if open the thing up, voiding the warrenty, why the hell would they take it back?
- iofthestorm, on 08/15/2008, -1/+8They worked around this right after Nintendo released the patch, how could you know the first part but not the second?
- jestro, on 08/15/2008, -1/+8Turn on DVD player functionality:
http://www.gemaga.com/2008/08/13/homebrew-enables- ... - aywwts4, on 08/15/2008, -0/+6Yeah, just homebrew, an ISO loader doesn't exist.
Well I guess you could steal virtual console releases, but why bother, there is a full compliment of homebrew emulators already released.
The wii is currently in a very odd state where softmodding is for homebrew and hard modding is for software piracy and there is no middle ground, a hard mod won't make homebrew work, and actually interferes with homebrew loading from DVD at the moment. - coheedcollapse, on 08/14/2008, -1/+7Nope, just homebrew at the moment.
- Shaflugi, on 08/15/2008, -0/+6A lot of people don't. I guess they heard 'Nintendo broke it' and never heard anything else about it. The hackers fixed the Twilight Hack again like 3 days after Nintendo issued their patch :P
- TVarmy, on 08/16/2008, -0/+5How could he have any pudding, if he didn't eat his meat?
- TVarmy, on 08/16/2008, -0/+5Mom?
- coheedcollapse, on 08/15/2008, -0/+4I already had the homebrew channel so the news wasn't big to me in the first place.
- JudgeMonkey, on 08/16/2008, -0/+3Hmm, seems to be the case with PSN just as much, and well if I could ever play a game online on the wii, I have a strong suspicion there would be many kids there too.
- MimoSkater, on 08/16/2008, -0/+3Thanks for the information, now I just have to get Twilight Princess back. (which I traded in to EB games, haha)
- TVarmy, on 08/16/2008, -0/+3It lets you play homebrew. This includes games written by the Wii hackers (There's a Duck Hunt clone, and Tetris and a few others), plays video DVDs thanks to a recent exploit (in addition to any media in a major format on the SD card or a USB HD (USB speed is slow, MP3 only on the HD)), and, most importantly in my mind, run emulators.
This really matters, because it's a whole lot cheaper than the Virtual Console. Who wants to pay $5 for an 8 Bit game? There are many emulators out there, and they all support every major type of Wii controller (WiiMote, classic controller, Gamecube, there's even a balance board driver, although it's not widely used). I have a SNES emulator, a Nintendo emulator, a Gameboy Color/Advance emulator, a SCUMMVM emulator (I guess it's an emulator), and an N64 emulator (Kind of a proof of concept at this point, runs fairly slowly), and there are many more out there. Pretty much every major system the Wii is capable of supporting has an emulator. There's a Turbo-16x emulator, a Sega master system emulator, and many others. Check out the forms at TehSkeen.com or wii-news.DCemu.co.uk.
It's all a really good deal as you just need a copy of Twilight Princess, an SD card, and an internet connection. No need for a mod chip, or anything else. Mod chips still open up possibilities, such as backups and homebrew from the DVD, but at this stage, I'd say I wouldn't bother with that unless you really want to pirate games. 2GB of SD is enough for most homebrew, at least until more consoles with CDs are supported (There is a Sega Saturn emulator, which isn't playable yet, but is coming along. Also, with some efficient code a PSX emulator is feasible). However, there is also evidence that a homebrew firmware update could open up the console to SDHC support (16 GB SD cards, or even bigger), and USB 2.0. And homebrew can now read files from DVDs with a Homebrew firmware update, but it can't load and run them like games.
Go for it if you've got a Wii. I sent in my Wii to get fixed when my SSBB disc wouldn't run, and they didn't give me any problems. In fact, I remember reading about somebody who sent in a Wii with a modchip installed for a repair, and they sent back the same Wii, sans modchip. I don't think they worry too much about warranty violations on the individual scale. - peaceninja, on 08/15/2008, -0/+3thanks for the links, ive been wanting to find out the gist behind homebrew for a while now
- NikoKun, on 08/15/2008, -1/+3I've been banking on the Wii eventually having DVD playback support for a while now... and I kindof guessed it would happen in the homebrew scene first.
I finally got it working correctly last night, and it's PERFECT, all things considered. And I'm sure future updates will only improve it!
This couldn't be an easier thing to do... I've installed so many different functions, programs, and homebrew games... It's restored my interest in the system again. All that was needed, was an SD card and twilight princess... And it can all be done in a matter of minutes! It's amazing!
Nintendo should embrace this type of thing! - jimmilu, on 08/16/2008, -0/+2It depends on what you're saying "installing" the Twilight Hack means:
First, download the hacked save file (Twilight Hack) and put it on the SD card. At this time _also_ put the Homebrew Channel installer on your SD card (boot.elf). Follow the steps up to where you talk to the man in TP, and the Homebrew Channel will be installed.
The Twilight Hack is a method to run homebrew (non-Nintendo-authorized code), incidentally the only one not involving some kind of hardware mod (or USBGecko? meh). You could technically run all homebrew just using the Twilight Hack, but then you'd have to talk to the man every time you ran anything. Instead, the Homebrew Channel (itself homebrew, installed through the Twilight Hack _once_) lets you run homebrew from its considerably easier-to-access menu. - Shrubber, on 08/15/2008, -1/+3Yeah, just "homebrew."
- aywwts4, on 08/15/2008, -1/+3I don't think you are crazy Paulysan, If I owned a 360 I certainly wouldn't be doing anything to void my warranty, I don't know anyone with a 360 that Hasnt had a RRoD, with one person who has had three.
I'm sure the 360's hardware modding rate is lower than the black xbox's was, that thing was a reliable tank filled with standard replaceable PC hardware. Its certainly anyone who isn't made of money (and most pirates are likely cheapskates) would consider before modding. - trm3446, on 08/15/2008, -0/+2Being serious here....once I install the Twilight Hack, then I install the Homebrew Channel? This is confusing as hell.
- trm3446, on 08/15/2008, -0/+2NikoKun, I'm assuming all you have to do is add the .dol or .elf file into the apps/foldername location? Can't get to hackmii.com from work.....so it's a little difficult to figure out what to do.
- coheedcollapse, on 08/15/2008, -0/+2Only the dishonest ones say that. I own a modchip, but I still buy games that are worth buying. The only stuff that I download I would have never played or bought in any other circumstance anyways.
- TehProphet, on 08/15/2008, -1/+3I have mine hacked it's nice, I didn't really feel like paying for SF64 and pokemon snap again since I already own those games, and there is some pretty cool homebrew, I look forward to seeing what they can do with the ocarina cheat engine and some of these media players.
- Elranzer, on 08/15/2008, -2/+3Hello, Warren Buffet. Is that you?
- TVarmy, on 08/16/2008, -0/+1Forgot to mention, there is a Genesis emulator.
- inactive, on 08/15/2008, -0/+1I did it last night also. On wiki they have a homebrew- http://www.wiibrew.org/wiki/Setting_up_your_Wii_fo ...
download the all in one file. It will be set up ready on your SD Card. - bloodredxxx, on 08/30/2008, -0/+1oooh... wii homebrew! wish those homebrewers can come up with unique wii apps/games (like maybe something involving human anatomy *wink wink*) http://webfindr.net/cat/nintendo-wii/
- TVarmy, on 08/16/2008, -0/+1It doesn't do piracy, although it's said that it could if a dedicated team were to code support for it. All the major homebrew teams are antipiracy, though, and they do it partly out of pragmatism, as Nintendo would rush to patch them if they did release a Homebrew Channel which played backups, which would kill the homebrew scene after Nintendo releases a majorly repressive patch.
- andreo, on 08/16/2008, -0/+1I modded my Wii when the first chip came out. The console died about a year later (not sure if it was because of the chip though). I took the chip out and sent it in for repair. But you could tell that someone had been in the console doing things that they shouldn't have been doing.
I paid the 80 bucks since it was out of warranty. They simply sent back a replacement console.
I won't be modding the replacement, not worth the hassle. But I will be installing the homebrew channel. - chadsterrr, on 08/15/2008, -1/+2Will someone please tell me what exactly this thing does?
- inactive, on 08/15/2008, -2/+2You must be a college student.
If you have a real job, it's trivial to save up another $250. - onlinelogic, on 05/27/2009, -0/+0I also used the twilight hack before I used the method explained on http://www.morewiifun.com which was a lot easier.
- BlueSkyfish, on 08/15/2008, -2/+2Or ever. The authentication is through the DVD drive's firmware, which can't be accessed through the system OS. You're always going to need a modchip to pirate games.
- purzzzell, on 08/15/2008, -9/+8No thanks - I don't run mods on my "current generation" consoles - it's a constant race - stealth chip, smart update that disables online capabilities, stealthier chip, smarter update.
***** that. My Wii is worth too much to risk not being able to go online to play Smash Br...errrr...Mario Kart and other great games that work well online.
and a 360 without live is like a puppy mill without bitches, it just doesn't work the way it's supposed to. - Rockkybox, on 08/28/2008, -1/+0No-one in their right mind is going to buy a separate wii just for the homebrew available now
- Elranzer, on 08/15/2008, -2/+1Many modchip enthusiasts insists that they only want to play homebrew, not illegal back-ups. Well, here we are with a solution that DOES allow homebrew, but not illegal back-ups. So this should be good enough, eh?
That said, this apparently does allow you to play "backups" of WiiWare and VC games. - CFFL23, on 08/15/2008, -2/+0how the hell do you play the dvd the sight says not to ask and i cant find a guide! please help!
- inactive, on 08/15/2008, -5/+2Just save up and buy a second one then.
Keep one stock, and keep the other off the network. - Dunnion, on 08/15/2008, -9/+5That whole post was just jibber jabber to me. I was hoping it was about beer.
- inactive, on 08/15/2008, -6/+2so can I also play pirated games with this
- ImpoliteAndEvil, on 04/06/2009, -6/+2How about for Mac?
- paulysan, on 08/15/2008, -10/+5Wii has online? Are you serial?
PS: Also, I thought up a conspiracy. Maybe Microsoft deliberately sabotaged their units to fail every so often, in order to have them sent in and checked to discourage piracy, because if you mod your console your warranty is void. Hmmm.... I wonder..... - wisedude, on 08/14/2008, -10/+3Can I play "backups" with this?
- IamKrAzE, on 08/16/2008, -9/+1But can it play crisis?
