- thesteve19, on 04/08/2009, -0/+43Yeah, Metal Gear on the NES was a sad state of affairs. But Metal Gear on the MSX, priceless.
- Jdshald, on 04/09/2009, -2/+38Finally an AVGN episode reached the Digg.com gaming page! He is IMHO much better than The Escapist's Zero Punctuation (I still like Zero Puncuation). I love Metal Gear Solid 4 but this game looks like it was very frustrating.
GO AVGN! - Braxford, on 04/08/2009, -5/+39He's gonna take you back to the past...to play the ***** games that suck WAIT, WAHT?!?! Metal Gear? Is it really that bad?...yeah, i guess it was.
- mrhedges, on 04/09/2009, -1/+27Konami ported it to the NES without involving Hideo Kojima. Kojima himself, also called the NES port "complete garbage". The MSX versions of MG and MG2: Solid Snake is available on MGS3: Subsistance.
- MrFisty, on 04/09/2009, -0/+19"Solid Snake. Might as well be Erect *****." Brilliant.
- inactive, on 04/09/2009, -0/+14Yes, well, the NES was kind of a ***** magnet. Don't get me wrong, it had a lot of really awesome games, but damn, did it ever attract some major *****. Hell, just being vaguely playable was a milestone for many NES games.
- Synn, on 04/09/2009, -0/+13You're so over it that this topic caught your eye and inspired you to add your "insightful" comment to it. You really are over them.
- Sublex, on 04/09/2009, -6/+18He's gonna take you back to the past
to play the ***** games that suck ass. - narutica, on 04/09/2009, -1/+13UH - OH! THE TRUCK HAVE STARTED TO MOVE!
- hideyourlovers, on 04/09/2009, -1/+12Great - I wish i could've heard this in 1991 when this game was handing me my ass
- Lazydriver, on 04/09/2009, -3/+13I love both Yahtzee and AVGN, they just cover two different genres and have a different way of presentation. One focuses on modern games and talks about it with a fast-paced exquisite vocabulary and a couple of *****, the other one focuses on ancient games and talks about it at a reasonably commoner vocabulary and a couple of *****.
I'll happily support both. - zervoslives, on 04/09/2009, -2/+10Metal Gear?!?
- Jdshald, on 04/09/2009, -0/+7There are already thousands of reviewers who review in detail new games. He is going back to the past to bring up old memories of why these games suck so bad. That's the Nerds thing. He will eventually review newer games.
But I agree with your point. I would love for him to review new games. - BrownieMix, on 04/09/2009, -0/+7The original version of Metal Gear was great, like AVGN said. However, the NES ported sucked. HARD.
- eddygoombah, on 04/09/2009, -1/+8I love the the Video Game Nerd! He reminds me of like all my friends when I grew up.
- bigsteve, on 04/09/2009, -0/+5Every time I watch one of his reviews, I realize that a game I just thought was "hard" was actually just poorly designed.
Games like Metroid were -hard-. Not because you were playing against the controller, or against braindead game elements, but because the levels were long, the enemies were tough, and the game actually was challenging. - shiidii, on 04/09/2009, -1/+6Now I want to buy an MSX to play Metal Gear
- Nateon, on 04/09/2009, -0/+5Yea, I loved Metal Gear on Subsistence it was a great bonus feature.
- themastersb, on 04/09/2009, -0/+5SGC? I dunno what that is, but OGC would be much better
- doshindude, on 04/09/2009, -0/+5you're on digg.
- StratoStreak, on 04/09/2009, -1/+5I remember playing this game when it came out and it was horrible. I thought I was the only one who didn't like it.
- djnforce9, on 04/09/2009, -0/+4I agree with you bigsteve. I actually felt the same way about "Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde" for NES (AVGN's most hated game). I used to think that I did badly because I wasn't "playing properly or didn't know HOW to play it right". Little did I know that I was doing badly because it was just an outright horrendous game to begin with. Same goes with "Kid Kool" for NES.
- darcyp, on 04/09/2009, -1/+5I don't think you get the point of AVGN...
- jiveturkeyblues, on 04/09/2009, -1/+5i like how "think for yourselves" in this context means agreeing with you, instead of the nerd in the video
- Jdshald, on 04/09/2009, -2/+6I agree. Dont Bury me until you have watched more that 3 of his reviews of ***** games.

(Click on AVGN to view) - nugz85, on 04/09/2009, -1/+4no it didnt spawn a genre and franchise, the one on the msx did
- volacide, on 04/09/2009, -0/+3Loved playing the MSX versions included with MGS3 Subsistence. Beat them both and enjoyed the hell out of them.
- cyoder, on 04/09/2009, -0/+3I jumped on what I thought was a great deal for MGS3 at TrU...only to find out that Subsistence had just been released with MGO and the original MSX ports of the first two games. Of course, Subsistence only lives on in the form of the Metal Gear Collection, and without the second disc (which I believe had MGO and the original games), so the only way you're getting your hands on that version of the game is to pay "new" prices for used copies online.
My "Metal Gear" experience is limited to the NES version...and that version sucks. I'm left to enjoy the MGS series without really experiencing its roots... - LethalGeek, on 04/09/2009, -1/+4I'm sorry, I've played the game and the review is right: It's broken. There's ***** in there that's just bad design. Respawning enemies from going into the MENU? Looping screens for no good reason?
If a modern game did this we'd string the developers up by their fingers and flog them with SNES controllers. Yes the series has plenty of great games, but the this one on the NES isn't one of them. - KiSA, on 04/09/2009, -3/+6Yahtzee's got it covered
- Tanker940, on 04/10/2009, -0/+3I wish he would have mentioned that all the other Metal Gear (Metal Gear Solid) games were awesome.
- Shadic, on 04/09/2009, -1/+4And you invalidate any opinion you may have offered by using the word "Sheeple." Congrats!
- hokeywebb22, on 04/09/2009, -5/+8He'd rather have a buffalo take a diarrhea dump in his ear
He'd rather eat the rotten ***** of a road-kill skunk & down it with beer. - Synn, on 04/09/2009, -1/+3Whereas you are already fat.
- everlast88, on 04/09/2009, -1/+3perhaps you're over living as well, i can fix that for you...
- inactive, on 04/09/2009, -3/+5He's the angriest gamer you ever heard
- RobbleRobble, on 04/09/2009, -1/+3!
- StolenLamp, on 04/09/2009, -2/+4PICK YOUR POISON *****!
- novalux, on 04/12/2009, -0/+2Emulator my man. It's great. I bought a Playstation 2 controller to USB adapter on Ebay a couple years ago and played Metal Gear 1 and 2 on an MSX emulator. Definitely recommend.
- novalux, on 04/12/2009, -0/+2You knew?
- Elranzer, on 04/09/2009, -0/+2Though it never would have reached American shores if it wasn't ported outside the MSX.
- Shenaniganz08, on 04/09/2009, -0/+2yeah one of the hardest ***** games ever
- CoreyHalliwell, on 04/09/2009, -2/+3I love James Rolfe. But i think his reviews would do much better with current games. Because current games suck balls too...
- hagfish70, on 04/11/2009, -1/+2Oh I get it the point, doesn't mean I have to like it.
- brambley, on 04/09/2009, -1/+2hahah yeah, i thought the same. you are already fat.
- FreckleEars, on 04/09/2009, -2/+3You can't really compare Yahtzee and the AVGN. They are both critics but in different senses. The AVGN purposely plays ***** games from the past because he knows they suck. He picks out what major game design flaws older generation console games had. Yahtzee on the other hand, picks any modern game and criticizes its general failures when compared to a desirable modern market.
Both are great though in their respective field. I like the fact that Yahtzee has a weekly release of popular titles. It helps me gauge what I could and could not buy. I take his opinion in high regard because his opinions and obersvations are par on what I think about games. Basing it on the fact that he review games after I played them. I have a common taste with him I guess =).
I like the AVGN because his videos are longer and show game footage to prove the flaws he describes. He also have that nostalgia feel. One can really relate to what annoyed them as a kid, but was more acceptable in game developments infancy. Either way... your opinion is valid saying that you like one more than the other. I am merely saying how they are not really the same thing. You can't compare a Yaris and a Civic even though they are both cars.
Awesome video though =) - butterz730, on 05/06/2009, -0/+1SGC is screwattack gaming convention.
- CoreyHalliwell, on 04/09/2009, -2/+3This is also to you guys below. Yahtzee is good but his delivery method, while funny, is kind of fast and pretentious in the wrong ways. What rolfe does is really backs up his words with specific examples and his reviews are much more in depth and give you a second to look around the game and get a better feel for what playing it is like. I realize yahtzee does give examples but i think his "zero punctuation" delivery is too much of a gimmick. Also, why not let there be another reviewer out there? I know that if rolfe started doing new games i'd switch from yahtzee to him in a second.
- chokeaduck, on 04/09/2009, -1/+2I wish he would review bad point and click adventure games like Victor Vector & Yondo
