- doshindude, on 12/30/2007, -19/+101Surprisingly, this anti-ergonomic hand cramping design still mostly remains with PlayStation controllers of today....
- Frostman3D, on 12/30/2007, -0/+69That's a high price to pay for a controller that you can't play any games with.
- LetsGoHokies, on 12/30/2007, -1/+61I understand people collect offbeat things, but paying 3k for a controller deserves a cockpunching
- KnockoutNerd, on 12/30/2007, -4/+59good thing it was unreleased, that is one ugly and uncomfortable looking controller
- nymphetamine, on 12/30/2007, -3/+57That's what she said.

Umm...I agree with the first guy in the Q&A. How do we know it's real?
The thing is, it's not the controller that matters, it's getting a hold of the mold and the schematic. Someone could make this by hand and claim it's an original. The fact he's so evasive makes me think that for $3,000 you're actually buying a felony conviction for recieving stolen property if it's real, otherwise you're buying a carefully crafted fake. - doshindude, on 12/30/2007, -0/+47The article didn't give enough of a hint?
- ShamsTron, on 12/30/2007, -1/+35It looks like it would be better if it curved down and not up.
- LocalH, on 12/30/2007, -1/+28To all those screaming "fake", compare to this:
http://www.watch.impress.co.jp/game/docs/20040429/ ... - Fraff5, on 12/30/2007, -3/+28I live like 20 minutes from Cleveland, Ohio, the location of the item. I could steal it.
- thesilvershadow, on 12/30/2007, -0/+25My first thought on looking at the picture was that it had to be fake as it looked so shoddy, so I did a bit of digging and a quick google search finds this article on the history of the SNES CD from May 2006:
http://www.britishgaming.co.uk/?p=897
The article includes pictures of a prototype, the discovery of which is attributed to Game-Rave, who apparently claimed to have “fished [it] out of Sony’s bins”. I haven't been able to verify this with the Game-Rave site, as the page about the SNES CD seems to be missing (see http://www.game-rave.com/psx/playstation_perfect_g ... but the pictures do show a very rough looking metal box connected to a controller that looks the same as this ebay listing, so it seems this controller might be legitimate.
Now, whether or not this box is actually the SNES CD prototype is another question entirely, as it does look very rough around the edges. However, the final picture from the article is supposedly from a classic gaming expo (is the massive Computer Space cabinet too obvious?) which shows the metal box plugged into an American style SNES, with the controller just visible:
http://www.britishgaming.co.uk/wp-content/retrogui ... - zeebo, on 12/30/2007, -1/+23That belongs in a museum!
- IndigoMoss, on 12/30/2007, -4/+24I totally agree. A lot of gamers seem to love them , most likely because it was the standard controller for leading console for more than 11 years. I have always thought it to be very uncomfortable and the pad is the worst pad I've ever used, till the 360's. On a side note, why the ***** do all D-pads have to suck, aside from Nintendo's? Do they have a patent on the non-suck d-pad?
- patm1987, on 12/30/2007, -1/+21actually they do, that's why most 3rd party controllers are even worse (for any console).
- Hurricane, on 12/30/2007, -0/+19I might give him that for the whole system.
- Dumbledorito, on 12/30/2007, -1/+20Twelve "offers" so far. The guy wants three grand for this thing? I've collected some pretty offbeat stuff, but this seems a little steep even for a console fan of the highest nerditude.
- JorgeGT, on 12/30/2007, -1/+19Then see the actual thing: http://www.britishgaming.co.uk/wp-content/retrogui ...
- Satanael, on 12/30/2007, -1/+18Sit DOWN Dr. Jones!
- altodarknight, on 12/30/2007, -2/+19Yes, it is what eventually became the PS1.
- demonsnake69, on 12/30/2007, -0/+15Pffft, look up the word "development" in the dictionary and you'll see Tomchei's face next to it.
- DrunkenSavior, on 12/30/2007, -0/+14You're upside down.
- flamingmb, on 12/30/2007, -1/+15hes being really shady with his answers. Answers like "thats a good question" reek of something thats not legit.
- thefish185, on 12/30/2007, -0/+14I was going to buy it, till I saw that he was going to scorch me on the shipping charges...
Have to watch out for those guys on ebay... - inactive, on 12/30/2007, -0/+14Q: For $2,999, you couldnt throw in free shipping? wtf? Dec-29-07
A: Ok but just for you. - viniciusfontes, on 12/30/2007, -0/+13We have top men working on this.
- solid12345, on 12/30/2007, -1/+13Nintendo's arrogance and belief they were unbeatable led to the rise of the PSX. Ironically it was soon later Sony's arrogance leading to the rise of the Xbox and the Wii.
- SpongeBad, on 12/30/2007, -1/+13Just because I didn't see it close to the top (not sure if it's here or not), here's the eBay auction: http://cgi.ebay.com/SNES-CD-dev-controller-Playsta ...
- DrunkenSavior, on 12/30/2007, -1/+11If this is the real mcCoy, you aren't shelling out 3K to play games with. You are buying a crucial part of gaming history. You are also signing your lifelong 'nerd' card for a lifetime.
- sirdaz, on 12/30/2007, -0/+10And sell it for $5,000?
- inactive, on 12/30/2007, -2/+12You've never worked development before I take it.
At least they had a fabbed piece. They used to be generic boxes and put single switches on them. - therightclique, on 12/30/2007, -0/+10Duke Nukem Forever.
- FluentinSarcasm, on 12/30/2007, -4/+13Did anyone else find the auction to be very vague? Also, what the hell was the deal with that seller answering questions like a sarcastic prick then being so bold as to post the questions and the answers on the auction. I felt positively outraged so I sent him an email expressing those feelings.
Wow buyatari
Talk about unnprofessional. Imagine my excitement when I found this auction... Having the chance to own a piece of gaming...er a very rare piece of gaming history. Then, I ACTUALLY read your auction. I was seriously contemplating making a "very good" offer or maybe even hitting that buy it now button, but after I saw how completely vague your auction was and how sarcastic/unbelievably rude you were to the people asking you questions I am going to pass. I mean come on buddy, if you were serious about this, why would you make yourself look like an idiot and a jerk to boot in your own auction. Some of those people have legit questions about this auction. Oh and here is another pointer, telling someone how you came across an item like this actually would increase the value, why you ask, because it gives it a backstory which makes it more interesting and enticing to the buyer.
Also, charging to hold the controller? That is just despicable. Congrats on a losing a buyer.
So what do you think Digg, did I do the right thing? - ursername180, on 12/30/2007, -1/+10Touche'
- Wolfspirittt, on 12/30/2007, -0/+9You didn't read the article or ebay bid item very clearly then. This was from the 'dev' kit. Not a finished product. More than likely the finished prototype never existed. In fact the console in it's final form probably doesn't exist either, just some gray PC case and the innards of what would have possibly been the SNES CD. I agree with everyone else though, that this is not worth the price.
- celkin, on 12/30/2007, -0/+8That statement wasn't even referring to the PS3. I'm impressed.
- Sabin, on 12/30/2007, -7/+14No, you've learned to love Sonys controller design. It has been surpassed many times (by every console after its release except for the massive original xbox controller IMO) but most people will never notice since playstation is the only console they will ever purchase.
- whiteguysamurai, on 12/30/2007, -0/+6Only that controller was well made and super comfortable, this one is horrid.
- dn11, on 12/30/2007, -0/+6Too bad they don't know you like I do Beloch
- cyrix, on 12/30/2007, -0/+5Looks like blood on the console. This was a brutal break up.....
- Ashura2k, on 12/30/2007, -0/+5Sure he should have elaborated on the backstory a but more, but it seems to be that you've got a pretty big stick up your ass if you are THAT pissed off over the guy acting casual and joking with his buyers.
- Satanael, on 12/30/2007, -1/+6Like Gonzo's nose?
- sv650touring, on 12/30/2007, -0/+5I wonder what the switches did
- EXTER, on 12/30/2007, -0/+5That was a prototype that was found in the trash probably in a Sony or Nintendo HQ.
More info and pics can be found here:
http://web.archive.org/web/20070223174020/www.game ... - Elranzer, on 12/30/2007, -7/+12You mean Nintendo's controller design? (SNES plus handles)
- SmittyJ783, on 12/30/2007, -0/+5what kind of mint? andes, altoids? i'd give half a tin of altoids for that
- s0nicfreak, on 12/30/2007, -0/+5I don't think I'd buy something for $3000 off ebay, especially from someone who doesn't have 100% positive feedback, gives such childish answers to questions, and DOESN'T OFFER SHIPPING INSURANCE. I mean, wtf? (Although if I spent $3000 on something I'd probably go pick it up in person...)
- themastersb, on 12/30/2007, -1/+6It's like they realized it was dumb to have 6 face buttons on the right side and turned 2 of them into trigger buttons later. If only the original Xbox learned to do that.
- HydrogenOxide, on 12/30/2007, -0/+5If that was genuine, do you realize how difficult it would be to actually get ahold of the thing, not even taking into account the illegality of stealing it and auctioning it on ebay?
- Jeffler, on 12/30/2007, -0/+4http://www.watch.impress.co.jp/game/docs/20040429/ ...
- TheTjalian, on 12/30/2007, -2/+6It sold more consoles, but where is the repeatedly awarded best game of the year, Ocarina of Time? Hmm, what's that, N64? Oh, and the best FPS that generation, Goldeneye? What's that? N64?
