- MonsterChaOS, on 01/15/2008, -0/+62Personally I wish they'd release it now. I mean, they've delayed the game enough, at least let me get in some good old school N64 smash while I wait for the release of Brawl... Melee just isn't cutting it anymore.
- KingGoonie, on 01/15/2008, -11/+44Thats the stupidest thing I ever heard. Thats like releasing Madden 2003 on VC the day Madden 2009 comes to stores...
I mean for me once the GC version came out, no reason to play the N64... - KingGoonie, on 01/15/2008, -1/+32You know they should do... this thing that some DVD are starting to do. Buy brawl, get a code for a free d/l of the original hit on the VC lol. Like how the DVDs have a free code to download a digital version of the movie.
- samfishercell, on 01/15/2008, -0/+26I'm sure Nintendo thinks its just a grand idea to release these games to coincide with their Wii 'big brothers' but I think it's a horrible idea. Nintendo needs to step up their game and get us some better VC games. Week after week we get crap on Monday mornings, I've pretty much stopped paying attention.
- kiiwii, on 01/15/2008, -0/+24I'd say this is pretty much a given...
Mario 3 was released a week before Mario Galaxy... Super Metroid was released a week before Metroid Prime 3.
I bet we see Super Mario Kart a week before the new Mario Kart game, too.
Now... if only an Earthbound sequel were coming out... - Protoss, on 01/15/2008, -0/+13That would make the delay a lot better. Just like they did in November, delay the game, but give something to make up for it.
- inactive, on 01/15/2008, -1/+13Yah, Nintendo is really known for that.
- Dundasbro, on 01/15/2008, -0/+12*Salivates* Earthbound sequel...
- inactive, on 01/15/2008, -0/+10What, are you saying you wouldn't like to have Smash 64 earlier than Brawl?
I'm just saying it would be cool; you Diggers don't have to pounce on every little thing someone says in an attempt to criticize them. - xXGeechXx, on 01/15/2008, -1/+10Thats the worst idea ever, why would anyone want to play the inferior version of SSB... They would be smart to release it 2-3 weeks prior similar to what they did with Metroid and Super Metroid.
- CurlyMike139125, on 01/15/2008, -1/+10What did they give us then?? "Sonic's in the game!! BUT NOW YOU CAN'T HAVE IT!! AHAHA!!"
- TheRealM3D, on 01/15/2008, -0/+8There is an active and thriving tournament community for Smash Bros. It has a lot of strategy that you just plain aren't seeing. Pro gaming circuits have run smash for 3-4 years now and the top players have made tens of thousands of dollars in prizes. Most battles are 1v1 or 2v2, with limited stage selection and items turned off. It's far more intense than might think.
If you want to see what it looks like, search for "Ken vs. Bombsoldier" or for Wobbles, Chu Dat, Isai, Azen and Mew2King on Youtube and you'll get a ton of great matches. If you want to learn more about the Melee tournament community, go to Smashboards.com. If you want to play Brawl online once you learn about all of this, check out wifiwars.com for strategy guides, online tournaments and leagues. - bigbadgoat, on 01/15/2008, -2/+10those are completely different games though.
smash bros has stayed the same in its two releases, and I dont think this one will be much different. - diggduggDOOM, on 01/15/2008, -0/+7"Nerdies, get a life." says the person taking their precious time to post on a subject they supposedly don't care about.
- crichton101, on 01/15/2008, -0/+7personally I just want them to start releasing more good games on the darn vc. Now they're cutting down to two games a week, and theres no way of knowing whats going to be released and when. And There really haven't been any games I really wanted to play released in a while. wheres TMNT Turtles in Time for the SNES? And it would be nice to see them port in some classic arcade games, and I don't mean just console systems, but real Arcade systems. I know the wii can handel games like the Final Fight arcade, or the Aliens vs Predator arcade game, or Dungeons & Dragons, and with the Wiimote, and having played Ghostsquad, it is pretty darn good for shooters, Imagine getting to play stuff like the Terminator 2 arcade game on the Wii with two players, or the arcade of Lethal Enforcers. I'ld be more then happy to pay for actual arcade ports on the wii.
- Lunarbunny, on 01/15/2008, -0/+7At least it will save on non-volatile memory. My SSB battery save died a few years ago, which is strange because that was pretty short for a battery save.
- directrix13, on 01/15/2008, -0/+6WTF? Smash is far more strategy than any other fighting game. All the other fighting games are twitch / repetition / memorization based.
- inactive, on 01/15/2008, -1/+7They should release it like 2-3 weeks before Brawl comes out.
That way they can build up the hype. - Teh_Psyren, on 01/15/2008, -2/+8That's funny because SMB3 coincided with SMG's release, as did Super Metroid with MP3...
- 232430, on 01/15/2008, -1/+7SB is neither.
- Cdog923, on 01/15/2008, -0/+6Why don't they release it now, as a sort of payment for the 2nd delay of Brawl? It makes more sense to release it now rather than the day of Brawl.
- airwalkery2k, on 01/15/2008, -0/+5I've been saying they should release that on Brawl's original release date ever since they delayed it the first time. I agree, though, they should get the 64 version up to make up for the delay.
- pbaehr, on 01/15/2008, -1/+6That's just silly.
- itseffinkasey, on 01/15/2008, -0/+5For some reason I got excited about this... Then I realized I already own Smash for the N64 AND I get to use my N64 controller while playing it.
- dafragsta, on 01/15/2008, -0/+5I bet 99% of all internet rumors start with "Hey! Wouldn't it be cool if..."
- Cdog923, on 01/15/2008, -2/+6You fail at life. Go away.
- PhrosTT, on 01/15/2008, -0/+3this is ***** retarded. what is nintendo's logic behind these simultaneous release dates?
release it first so somebody might actually give a *****. - 232430, on 01/15/2008, -3/+5VC = Not online.
- HMTKSteve, on 01/15/2008, -4/+6How do I bury this as "obvious" ???
- chewbacca77, on 01/16/2008, -0/+2Maybe, but its basically my favorite game of all time. Also, its getting harder and harder to find good N64 controllers, and I've already worn through too many of them.
- stubadub, on 01/16/2008, -0/+2I don't think so. If anything it will improve sales. People tend to want to revisit things they love before the next installment comes out. I imagine they will put out the N64 version a week or two before release, and lots of us will pick it up and play it for a week or so until we can get the new one.
With Metroid Prime 3 they released Super Metroid a week or two before Prime came out. I wonder how their sales were for that one. - Typhoon2009, on 01/15/2008, -1/+3I'm surrprised they didn't release it earlier. They would've made some good money.
- SirJackRex, on 01/16/2008, -0/+2It'd be smarter to release it on the VC on Feb. 10th.
- Korexz, on 01/16/2008, -0/+2YES, AGREED! DO IT NOW NINTENDO!
- skywake, on 01/16/2008, -0/+2I think it will improve sales for both. I got Paper Mario on VC a few weeks before Super Paper Mario was out here in Australia. I played through the original after reading reviews and such and then decided that it was a game worth getting. In the end I was disappointed with Super Paper Mario after Paper Mario but I think my point was that Nintendo conned me out of TWO games... *shakes fist*
- crazyhorse13, on 01/15/2008, -0/+2Lol @ "Biff"
- solidus636, on 01/16/2008, -0/+2They should have released it long before, to keep those without Super Smash busy because of all these delays.
- PhrosTT, on 01/15/2008, -0/+2avp arcade was my favorite game ever (well maybe next to x-men)
- Korexz, on 01/16/2008, -0/+1I think it is about time Nintendo rolled it out. Lots of emulators already to "online" play.
- KingGoonie, on 01/16/2008, -0/+1Like others said.... The mario games, the zelda games, the metroid games... those are all different game, because of the type of games they are. How is super metroid like metroid prime? How is Mario 3 like Mario Galaxy? Hell even Majora's Mask is different then Ocarina of Time... maybe pretty much the same graphics and gamestyle, but new story, new features etc... they are different.
Fighting games, sports games... really when you get a new game in those genres they pretty much make the old one obsolete. Thats why I chose Madden. Do you ever go back to an older version of a sports game when you have the newer one? Why bother when you have the much better version now. Brawl is adding so so so much more then Melee had, and that was an incredible game... and Melee added more then brawl had, which was an incredible game... But its obsolete now. Like the old Ipods. Yea they still work and do what needs to be done.... but the new ones do so much more! - bmc152006, on 01/16/2008, -0/+1yeah definately check out smashboards and do some reading.
- fbarbie, on 01/16/2008, -0/+1I'm sure I'm waiting in vain, but I'd love to get Perfect Dark through the VC.
- KingGoonie, on 01/16/2008, -0/+1No they didn't stay the same at all, there is additions and updates and added characters and game modes, etc etc etc...
Which is why I never went back to N64 version - darny, on 01/16/2008, -0/+1your comment was a little obvious, that's all. sheesh.
- Rioracer916, on 01/17/2008, -0/+1Yes because pirating is the answer. DUG DOWN
- samfishercell, on 01/17/2008, -0/+1See? This is my problem with this whole deal. I never flipping played the first Earthbound. I've always wanted to, but I shouldn't have to wait for Nintendo to release a Wii version to get a stab at it. Nintendo should be releasing these games instead of sitting on them.
- samfishercell, on 01/17/2008, -0/+1I think the hype is already high enough. Besides, anyone who wants to could go nab Melee and play it on their Wii already. If I was planning on getting Brawl, there's no way I would pay extra money to get the 64 version a couple weeks in advance. I WOULD, however, buy it now when I don't have much to play.
- samfishercell, on 01/17/2008, -0/+1Hey Pokemon Snap is actually a pretty fun game. Not worth the $60 it cost when it first came out...but good. Regardless, it was definitely a unique and fun experience while it lasted. I would love to see a Wii-based update for it.
- CleverGecko, on 01/15/2008, -0/+1Actually, I find there to be a number of redeeming qualities of the N64 release that SSBM, just didn't have... so it would be nice for a lot of people if SSB was released on the VC at the same time. I don't think its stupid at all... I think its creative marketing, and based on past sales patterns, its going to be quite successful.
- daridave, on 01/16/2008, -0/+1I agree with you (except the "melee just isn't cutting it anymore" part). They may think it's money maker that way, but it would be pretty stupid, because this isn't like playing Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Bros. 1, where both games offer a different experience. Smash Bros. is all fine and dandy in our memories, but I actually replayed it last night when I first read this news story and guess what, after playing Melee, the original SMASH BROS PLAYS LIKE ***** ! Yeah, I said it. There's so many things missing in the N64 version (compared to the GCN one) and once Dojo hits, this will be even more true... so if Nintendo wants to give the classic a breathing chance, they better release it before it gets another "you are clearly inferior" treatment.
