- vhold, on 10/11/2007, -4/+46He is parenting them. He's become informed with the online capabilities of the systems and chosen one that he feels provides a good balance of capabilities and online safety. Would you build a house in the middle of the freeway and argue that it's a good idea because the parent could hold the kids' hand constantly and make sure he doesn't get hit by a car? Parents can't watch every single thing a kid does 24/7.
- johnhummel, on 10/11/2007, -14/+47At which point I wouldn't let my kids within 10 feet of it. And don't start with the "Well, I'm an adult, why do they need to put barriers in for me?" Raise your hand if any of you logged into your parents account on the family computer to get around the filters and crap.
Right. Sorry, but I've got kids, and friend codes work just fine. I can let my daughter play Tetris DS online and not worry about Joe Pedophile and her appearing on America's Most Wanted next week.
Yeah, friend codes suck for everybody else, and I'm sure there's a better way of doing them. But for right now, I'll take cautious baby steps with my babies before I'll trust anything that can get them online. - vhold, on 10/11/2007, -2/+29I think Nintendo hasn't -blown- it with online capabilities for the Wii so much as Microsoft has almost absolutely nailed it right on the head with the 360.
Online play is a critical part of Microsoft's market, but I really believe it isn't so critical to Nintendo's customers. Also, Nintendo doesn't have other businesses subsidizing their game business, so they have to focus their resources where it most matters. They have to make money on it or die. This is something they are currently doing the best at. - Sapulator, on 10/11/2007, -0/+25all i care about is if Brawl will be online multiplayer
- iluvatar, on 10/11/2007, -0/+24I wonder if this is related to the Geometry Wars news from yesterday? Anyway, I hope this channel is equipped with a demo feature too.
- eneshelon, on 10/11/2007, -2/+21forget the marketplace, if theyre gonna copy anything copy the friends online features of the 360.
- johnhummel, on 10/11/2007, -4/+19@vhold: I'm afraid I do not agree.
We know the Wii has 512 MB storage space. We also know that it can be expanded through SD cards, and you can redownload what you deleted. Even assuming that an online game is going to be 50 MB in size, that still leaves room for 10 games just to start. Unless you're a pack rat, you can purchase game, play it, delete it, redownload it later, back it up to SD card instead and restore it.
They aren't selling movies which take up 500 MB apiece - these are suppose to be small games. A Windows Geometry Wars/Asteroid clone I downloaded the other day called "Echoes" is only 10 MB in size.
If you want bigger games, then yeah, the Wii has a problem - but odds are, that's about the point Nintendo says "Let's just make this a full fledged Wii game and be done with it." - Dannychico, on 10/11/2007, -1/+16And Strikers. Don't forget about Strikers.
- Buelldozer, on 10/11/2007, -1/+15You're not just a kidding.
I was at the store last night with my son picking up some extras for our Wii. While we were standing there reviewing what was available a random person in the aisle noticed that we were buying Wii accessories. Correctly assuming that we already had one he started asking us questions. We quickly gathered a small crowd of people who were ALL there looking for a Wii to buy!
It's amazing to me that supply is still this constrained 7 months after launch! - dvddesign, on 10/11/2007, -0/+12Xbox 360 Core systems managed just fine with 64MB memory cards until Castlevania: SOTN. Wii has 512 MB internal. What's the problem?
- liwii, on 10/11/2007, -1/+13rstarr: Mario Strikers charged is coming out this Friday to Europe! Pokemon Battle Revolution is coming out one month later to the United States. Both of these games will be online! You can play these games with random people, or if you know someone's 12 digit game friend code, you can play with them. Each copy of each online game has its own code. You can exchange friend codes at sites like http://www.MapWii.com or forums all over the web. It is going to be great!
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+11If they are going to do this, then they need a real progress bar. Having mario jump around is cute for 17k NES games, but when I downloaded Opera, it took a rather long time and I had no idea how much longer it would take. All they need to do is add time left / bytes left. Not this "blocks" concept which is totally meaningless.
- johnhummel, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10Agreed - I think a demo feature would be most appropriate, and give the casual gamers that have been making a Wii hard to find for everybody else get a good idea of what the game is about.
My Lovely Wife (MLW), for example, loves Luxio and Tetris (though she probably won't care for Geometry Wars that much) - if the games were $10, she'd probably think about picking them up. - carbon12, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8Japan: since launch (Pokemon Battle Revolution)
Europe: in 3 days (Mario Strikers)
North America: in 1 month (probably Pokemon) - emjaymj, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Judging by the fact that they currently use SD cards, a non-proprietary technology where you can get 2GB of storage for the same price as an XBOX 360 64mb memory card, it would be logical to assume that if they were to enable hard drive expansions, they would allow standard USB external hard drives.
- Lancer383, on 10/11/2007, -12/+17While I would love a demo feature and all the other cool things that XBLA does, the Wii's tiny internal memory will become an issue quickly. Demos on XBLA would be way too big to fit on the Wii's memory, and nearly fill up an entire 1 gig SD card.
Hate to say it, but Nintendo has really blown it with regard to online capabilities for the Wii. - Snowy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Like Madaznboi said. It is not arbitrary. He actually collects 100 coins (I counted) until the end where he is just collecting coins until the screen fades. It is not a typical progress bar but it also isn't just random.
- rstarr, on 10/11/2007, -2/+7So when do we get the online multiplayer games again?
- yugiohdan6, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4I think that there may actually be an external hard drive for the wii eventually.
http://digg.com/gaming_news/Nintendo_News_Official_Mass_Storage_USB_for_Wii - madaznboi, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4I believe it is implemented already, Mario stops hitting the first block after 33%, stops hitting the second block after 66% and stops hitting the last block as it finishes the job. The more coins he hits, the closer he reaches to the 33/66/complete markers.
- LunarOcean, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5"Ok, so we've got 2.
And then what...?"
And then you've been answered. You asked for multipalyer online games and someone posted a couple. There's your answer. Also, you only need to look at future releases to see which ones are perfect for an online setup. - NinjaBoy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3*Please let it be user programmable games*
- LunarOcean, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3ragsmaloy,
From my experience, yes. You can't copy a game onto an SD card and use it on a different Wii, but I want to say my suitemate tried it the day he downloaded Super Mario 64. Couldn't play it on mine, but he was able to transfer it back to his with his SD card. - spyrochaete, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3I believe the Wii supports up to 2GB SD cards. It'll take a while to fill one of those up. Eventually another solution might be required since swapping SD cards is pretty annoying.
You'd think they'd make some kind of PC backup system since the system has built-in WiFi. - kennyGS13, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3yeah we really do need a demo channel
- JimmyJJWalker, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Amazing, the ability to play Commodore 64 and Amiga games at home!
Now that's playing with POWER... - Bokista, on 10/11/2007, -6/+8I know what would compliment the Virtual Console really well: being able to find the physical console on store shelves. I still can't find a Wii in the D.C. Metro area.
- Exhaust, on 10/11/2007, -5/+7There are all kinds of parental blocks on the 360. You can put your kids Live accounts in the "kiddie" zone so they can only match up with other people in the kiddie zone. You cuss or say anything offensive you're banded.
You don't need to nerf the entire online offering to "protect the kids" when there are multiple ways to achieve the same thing. If you setup parental blocks and make sure your kids don't play mature games there won't be a problem. Be a parent instead of buying electronic "babysitter" devices to occupy your kids time.
All you ever hear these days is "protect the kids" blah blah blah. ***** the kids. No one gave a ***** about kids when I was growing up... Stick a fork in the light socket, see how that hurts bet you won't do that again. - FrostRaven, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3First they announce Geometry Wars is coming to the wii, now a possible marketplace? Looks like somebody likes what Microsoft has done with the 360.
- SkippyDoorknob, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Actually the marketplace was hinted at before the Geometry Wars announcement. Recently when there was talk of an updated Impossible Mission game coming to the Wii, they said it wouldn't be through the regular Virtual Console, but something else - presumably this marketplace.
- seanpicli, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3bet they announce a nintendo themed HD add on - what else are those USB ports for.... hopefully they do, then people can mod cheaper HD's to work :-)
- exscind, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Hopefully this will signal the introduction arcade-perfect ports for the Wii/VC. One problem with a number of VC games is that they are watered-down NES ports of stand-up arcade titles. Many of these are readily available in their better form via XBL or in one of the many Namco/Midway/Capcom/Taito/Tecmo arcade collection titles that have been released over the last few years. (Why would someone buy NES version of Pac-Man, for example?). I'd like to see Nintendo focus more on releasing their exclusives or platform specific titles for the VC and introducing new options for arcade ports or new titles.
- aywwts4, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4perhaps, but really, if a game takes up more space than two gigs, (which can easily be found in SD storage) it should be shipped on DVD. Something tells me nintendo would probably be the type to put in a 100mb limit of some sort.
I bet they will enable generic usb support in the future though (hard drives, usb drives, etc) - kravex, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1@ theineffablebob
I think you'll find it's Microsoft and Sony who are making 'gimicky' Wii-motes now, as they put it. - juan23, on 10/11/2007, -5/+6That's cool...but...we need the memory to put it in, and memory cards ain't gonna cut it.
- MechaZain, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1@exhaust
Next time you play on Live check the Zones of your fellow users. If you can manage to get half of them to match up with yours then you can talk about their benefits... - ragsmaloy, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3Is it possible to copy data over from your sd card to a pc and then move it back to the same wii later? If so you could keep a reasonable selection in the wii at any one time and then just copy the new ones from your pc when you feel like a change.
- muffinmanpoo, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1@snowy: It's still silly.
And if you wander off while it's downloading, or get distracted and lose count of the coins, then you suddenly have no idea how long it'll be. - muffinmanpoo, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1@fatdog789, Shortage? Still? I don't know where you are, but there's certainly no shortage here.
- jtwilkins, on 04/03/2009, -2/+3I just want to be able to walk into Target and buy an actual Wii console.
- MindStalker, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1lunarocean: Yea, any data put on an SD card can be backed up to a computer or other device. They are just encrypted and useless on any other device. As long as there is no corruption though they can be put back on your original Wii with no problems.
- MatttK, on 10/11/2007, -3/+3@johnhummel: The rest of the world shouldn't be inconvenienced just because you are too lazy to use the parental controls features. As a poster said above, the 360 has plenty of control you can use so that you don't have to worry about Joe Pedophile. In the end, if you can't trust your child not to hack through the security or whatever, it's up to you to take the console away from him, rather than have Nintendo take the functionality away from the rest of us.
- DarkSora09, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0I want Strikers now...damn Europeans...
- puppetj, on 10/11/2007, -1/+0Sweet can't wait to play those classic Commodore 64 and Amiga games on my Wii, when i finally get one!
- Janus67, on 10/11/2007, -4/+3The whole problem with this is that there isn't enough space on the Wii and the memory card system is a joke (it is a backup device and not readable/playable with savegames, etc).
- sUGArDawg, on 10/11/2007, -1/+0This just in!
Nintendo researching new-fangled concept destined to blow away the competition: online gaming! They have many years left to work on it, but look out Microsoft and Sony!
/sarcasm - fatdog789, on 10/11/2007, -5/+3Hows about they focus on making the damn things, too?
It's been almost a year and they still have a shortage. That's incompetence. - thewebguy, on 10/11/2007, -5/+3GOOD
- ragsmaloy, on 10/11/2007, -2/+0If you're wanting the online play wait till friday and some mario strikers which should be damm fine. Anyway i think nintendo will probably do better with small downloadable games which good be pretty basic but good fun to complement their main games. Though i would enjoy a demo feature to test out some disk based games which probably would take up a reasonable amout of SD space.
- onimusha115, on 10/11/2007, -6/+3While I like the idea of more downloadable games, and the possibility of side by side retail and download options, one question comes to mind. Where the hell am I going to save all this stuff? the 360 and PS3 are more capable with thier harddrives, the Wii has a small amount of memory and even using a SD card is limited. As much as I hate add ons, we are going to need external drive support.
