NEVER....NEVER..........EVER tell diggers that a company is making money....... ***** now Nintendo and the Wii are evil too. - bigdsinferno, on 10/10/2007, -4/+49why would nintendo lower their price when these things are still sold out everywhere?

Systems sold:
3.59M Japan
4.69M America
3.36M Others
---------------------
Money Made:
$46,670,000 Japan.
$229,810,000 USA
$248,640,000 Others
----------------------
All together:
$525,120,000 - IanPatterson, on 10/10/2007, -0/+32It prints money
- AwesomeMonster, on 10/10/2007, -8/+35It was well worth my $250... I have no clue what you're talking about.
- cygnus2112, on 10/10/2007, -2/+29Nintendo made the Wii to profit from oil!
- mrboratsagdiev, on 10/10/2007, -2/+28"No excuse to not add an HD chip. you aren't SUPPOSED to make money when you sell the console, it is supposed to be a loss leader."
I pretty much can't stop laughing at Mr. Armchair CEO right now. - weaselfingers, on 10/10/2007, -0/+26He's right, you know. Exchanging goods and services at a price that allows you to make a profit destroys the economy.
- nights0223, on 10/10/2007, -1/+25They don't make 100% profit on those.
- isunktheship, on 10/10/2007, -1/+24Says the guy who's user name is "mewtwo" a pokemon from NINTENDO.
- grumpyrain, on 10/10/2007, -0/+22and they don't cost $100 either.
- RoadDoggFL, on 10/10/2007, -5/+27The worst thing is that they accept smaller profits in Japan. That's the only part that bothers me even a little, though I don't know if distribution is factored into those figures (not that it would be much per unit at the bulk rate they're shipped...).
But really, who are we to expect Nintendo to lose money on its hardware sales? Their current strategy is obviously working for them. - SigmaDraconis, on 10/10/2007, -1/+22Your epic whoosh just broke the sound barrier.
- retzed, on 10/10/2007, -2/+20All of the grass is alaway greener in Japan because it is all artificial
- walkingdogs, on 10/10/2007, -0/+16In japan Wii sports isn't included and you can bet they make a pretty penny off that $50 add in. Now this game is a major reason the Wii took off so leaving it out could have had catastrophic results but you can bet a good part of that profit is a result of it being included.
- grumpyrain, on 10/10/2007, -1/+16Making money on the console + outselling the competition + still cheaper than the competition + still can't meet demand = egg on face of those who thought that the current generation console would won over HD.
- Kokichi, on 10/10/2007, -0/+15This was known before the Wii even came out. Dugg down for being old.
- grumpyrain, on 10/10/2007, -0/+15It is called Economics 101.
Lesson 1: Supply and Demand: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Supply_and_demand
The truth is that a Wii is 'worth' whatever someone is prepared to pay for it. If Nintendo did drop the price by $50, retailers would be out of stock before you could blink. If it is too expensive, you would have consoles gathering dust on the store shelves. The ideal price point is such that the amount of demand matches supply. - walkingdogs, on 10/10/2007, -3/+15Not until MS and SONY come close to matching its weekly sales AND you can find a Wii any where will Nintendo even consider lowering the price, and they are probably more likely to just remove Wii sports and charge $199 than actually lower the console price.
- DrToddMD, on 10/10/2007, -1/+13Actually that's considerably high. Apparently Sony loses at least a hundred dollars per PS3 manufactured, X360 is probably somewhere in the $75 neighborhood, but MAKING money on a console?! Unfathomable! :P
- scott9378, on 10/10/2007, -1/+12Yes, the government mails all that tax money to Nintendo.
- uberism, on 10/10/2007, -1/+12Money lost on the Gamecube?
They were actually making a profit. Just because gamecube was last place did not mean it lost by any means. - Leo21k, on 10/10/2007, -2/+12They're going to have a ton of money to put into the development of their next system thanks to the wii. :)
- MagicCake, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10He's still rockin' the GameBoy Color.
- skywake, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10Sony and Microsoft have other markets to drop back on if they ***** up... Nintendo does not. The way Microsoft and Sony work isn't how the "gaming industry" works its just how they choose to run it and as you pointed out they do work for a profit in the end via game sales. Nintendo's exclusion of HD was (as far as I can tell) mostly because of the lack of current HD penetration and the fact that because of that it wouldn't help their "plan" for market domination in the slightest but would still hurt their profits.
Nintendo is playing it smart.... - ZenMojo, on 10/10/2007, -2/+11The Wii won't drop in price anytime soon. The only reason it dropped the Gamecube's price was its 3rd place position in a 3-way console race.
- coheedcollapse, on 10/10/2007, -4/+13This scares me a bit. I admit what Nintendo has done with it's newest console is really amazing, and it's great that they're actually making a profit on a console so quickly...but what does it hold for the future of gaming?
I just hope the next console wars aren't just Sony and Microsoft trying to be Nintendo and not innovating technologically. I love having my Wii for the fun, remote swingy, FPS pointy type stuff, and my PS3 to play the powerful pretty stuff. I'd hate to just have three pointy swingy consoles to choose from. - Murdats, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8Try living in australia, the wii here costs $400, games cost $100.
seeing as the exchange rate is currently 81c to the US dollar we are not getting the best deal
a $50 game should be $60, maybe throw in another $10-20 for shipping, but thats still a significant amount less then $100. - requinox, on 10/10/2007, -3/+11If gamers really felt short-changed and ripped off, they wouldn't be buying it in droves. Apparently not everyone hungers for ultra-realistic graphics and are therefore willing to settle for something less. Nintendo is just catering to these people.
- Kurisuku, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8That's the thing, though. In Japan, Nintendo doesn't NEED to bundle in a game to get great sales. They're going to get 'em no matter what, basically.
- n00bst3r, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8I have to say that my Wii experience has been rather lackluster mostly because of the lack of effort by 3rd parties.
- jpt62089, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7My Wii experience has been rather lackluster too. But that's only because I am too poor to buy games.
- pikpikcarrotmon, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7*****, get Ron Paul on the job. Maybe he can add a picture section and fix the comment system while he's at it, too.
- jpt62089, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7Well then that's what happens when I assume.. haha
Either way, I still respect Nintendo for making a fun to play weight losing console :) - grumpyrain, on 10/10/2007, -5/+11According to Amazon, Wii Play + Remote = 49.95, Nunchuck = 19.95
I am sure you can buy these in stores for cheaper than 120 - blahtastic, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6And a more reliable investment than a 360. It's really unfortunate that I'm afraid to freaking touch that thing, it has some awesome games, it just has this little quirk where it breaks every 3 months. /Patiently waits for his 6th one to return in the mail after a month of its absence..
- illfatan, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6i own 12 wii games, have people over all the time, and sadly the game everyone wants to play is either wii sports or wario ware lol.
still the way the wii gets you into the game is what sells it. I thought the wii was gonna fail but bought it for the hell of it. It actually changed my mind. - ryllharu, on 10/10/2007, -4/+9Wrong. Nintendo dropped the Gamecube price because production on it became that much cheaper. Nintendo has *always* made profit on every game console they've ever made (excluding the virtual boy) from release to retirement. It's the reason Nintendo has been around so long, and won't go away for a long time.
It's called smart business practices. - Renton, on 10/10/2007, -4/+9Because all the alternatives are even higher? It's a hell of a lot better of an investment than $600 for a PS3.
- MagicCake, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5I agree, but bigdsinferno has the undeniable point: It would be stupid to lower the price when they're still sold out everywhere. In a couple years when sales are slowing down, you can expect a price drop then.
- conkers209, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Ok so what? Everyone knew Nintendo was making money with the Wii on day one. But unlike Sony and Microsoft, Nintendo has to make money on their system because this is all Nintendo does. Sony and Microsoft does other things besides games, so they can loose money on the systems (they don't want to but have to) and make up the money on other things. Nintendo has to make money on the systems and games because they are not making TV's and Operating Systems. But if what Nintendo did show with the Wii is that you don't need high end tech in a box to be great, all you need is good games and a fun way to play games and that's all you need.
- Pritchard, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5According to common sense, Nintendo doesn't get all of that money from sales, either.
- grumpyrain, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Because every other manufacturer in this industry subsidise their consoles in the hope of winning the market share game, relying on profits from games and peripherals to hopefully break even. Sony loses the better part of $100 for each console, but for them it is about flooding the market with Blu Ray players.
- xquizit, on 10/10/2007, -7/+11they deserve every $ they make. the console is great
- dragon76, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I don't see a new system coming out anytime soon. Maybe they will incorporate Gameboy Advance features into a phone. Phones are all the rage theses days. If Nintendo sold an unlocked GSM phone that played GBA games (repurchased through DL, natch), I'm sure it would kill.
- Asianwaste, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Every other system actually loses money per unit sold. They rely on games sold to get profits. The Wii is the only system among the 3 that gets money from sales of just the system itself. Quite smart.
- MWeather, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Your exchange rate with the US dollar doesn't matter. Your exchange rate to the yen does.
- FishyJoe, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3They may make less on the Wii, but Nintendo is making a killing on DS software sales in Japan. The DS is shattering every record and should pass PS2 sales this year.
- wiii, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5"I just hope the next console wars aren't just Sony and Microsoft trying to be Nintendo"
That's what these console wars were, and the last: Sony and M. trying to be Nintendo. - Murdats, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3yes, you have correctly described the business model of two companies, however how a company decides to operate has no bearing, if you dont like it, leave it, that is how capitlism is supposed to work.
or do you want every computer company to be like apple, every department store like walmart and leave you with no variety or choice? just a choice between an apple and an apple -
