- SystemJinx, on 07/03/2009, -2/+57Kudos for building a SNES portable, but downloading ROMS are easier.
- Wodle, on 07/04/2009, -6/+41Step by step gallery my dick!... that guy is a douchebag!!
- CodenameGamma, on 07/04/2009, -3/+34he was using that to test the screen to make sure it was wired correctly.
- eam5210, on 07/04/2009, -0/+23yup, and if you really want a handheld there's always

plays NES, SNES, GBA, Sega Genesis, or Neo Geo roms and I'm sure it's alot cheaper than what he plans to sell his for. - sonofabiscuit, on 07/04/2009, -0/+22"All this is kinda boring to write about. If you are really that interested pester me for details."
That statement pretty much sums it up. - sirbeta, on 07/04/2009, -1/+19Bury this. Meant to hit reply.
- linagee, on 07/04/2009, -0/+16How did he do the vacuum-forming? That looks awesome!
- Bozmanbeyond, on 07/04/2009, -0/+13That thing must eat up batteries like crazy.
- AndrewDB, on 07/04/2009, -0/+9That alone makes it not worth the purchase. :(
- marshallh, on 07/04/2009, -4/+12Why do I come off as a dick? Because I get tons of flames, stupid comments like "GET A PSP", and the people that are so jealous that they try to bring me down every way they can.
I'm in the process of converting it to work with Li-poly batteries, which should give it 3+ hours of runtime.
Thanks everyone for the positive comments, and everybody else who says I'm wasting my time, ***** you.
Have a nice day ;)
It has been sold for $500 - Luthor, on 07/04/2009, -2/+10Portable Super Nintendo, Step by step guide:
Buy Nintendo DS.

Enjoy games. - Gravey9, on 07/04/2009, -1/+9http://benheck.com/
Ben Heck has made some amazing consoles. - billricardi, on 07/04/2009, -0/+7He never said it was step by step. msaleem did because he loves to 'exaggerate' his stories to the front page.
- mtnlion2, on 07/04/2009, -2/+8Why does he turn into a ***** in the Q&A section at the end?
- Garmonbozzia, on 07/04/2009, -1/+6No shoulder buttons. All that work and he sticks L and R on the front?
- engelb15, on 07/04/2009, -0/+5I'm sure you're a decent guy in person... but the internet seems to turn people into dicks.
examples:
- the "$500" comment.
- the gun in the 3rd pic... why does it just happen to be there?
BTW... great work. Don't let the opinions of others slow you down. - TVarmy, on 07/04/2009, -0/+5The original Gameboy actually had a 1 MHZ processor, IIRC. Microwaves have similar amounts of computing power. The Gameboy Color had roughly the same power as an NES, but the small screen and developers wanting backcompatability with the original Gameboy kept the power from being used for anything too amazing.
Considering this has a nice big and bright screen and runs a system never meant to run from battery power, I accept the battery life. Still, the smart route for a user friendly gaming machine would probably be to use a smartphone or PSP and an emulator. But for collectors, I think there's just something about using the original cartridges that emulation just can't give them. - billricardi, on 07/04/2009, -1/+6I don't think you're a dick. The guy who posted it to Digg is a dick because he branded it a 'Step-by-Step Gallery'. Not your fault that msaleem lies to get his stories to the front page.
- eschatonik, on 07/04/2009, -2/+7Because it is hand-crafted and one of a kind, dumbass.
- MasterGrief, on 07/04/2009, -0/+5If you're looking for a decent hardware hacker, see Ben Heckendorn. He's been in the gaming media lately because he's done things like make Xbox 360 and PS3 laptops, but he's been modifying hardware to an extremely high quality degree for probably ten years or more. I was following him as far back as 2002 when he was detailing his portable NES, SNES and PSX projects.
Guy's a genius.

http://benheck.com/all-game-projects - LoneWolf01, on 07/04/2009, -0/+4Which actually isn't too bad, seeing as the original Gameboy used 4 AAs and that was a black and white screen, with (assuming) less than half the processing power of a SNES.
- pe5t1lence, on 07/04/2009, -0/+4IT'S FULL OF STARS!!
- Hellahulla, on 07/04/2009, -0/+42 hour battery life from 6 AAs.
- geckron2, on 07/04/2009, -1/+4...this was on Engadget like 3 days ago.. <_<
Oh and, also:

A: Go ahead, I'm not stopping you."
I lawled. - inactive, on 07/04/2009, -0/+3that is also a media player
- Taiyoryu, on 07/04/2009, -0/+3Where is the step-by-step how-to?
- Hellahulla, on 07/04/2009, -1/+4idiot
- Stuffburger, on 07/04/2009, -0/+3http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vacuuforming
It's fairly simple- get a sheet of plastic, make a mold to form the plastic around the surface of, then melt the plastic around the mold and hold it in place with a vacuum. Not too precise but it is cheap and easy.
The shop i work in uses it for everything from little 3" ball pieces to 20' aircraft wings. - unrealmp3, on 07/05/2009, -0/+3I just use my Nintendo DS Lite and use SnesDS on my Slot-2 EZ-V 3-in-1.
- MasterGrief, on 07/04/2009, -0/+3NINTENDO SIXTY-FOOOOOOOOUR
- pe5t1lence, on 07/04/2009, -1/+4Wait.. this is you?
Well then, pretty sweet machine. I love looking through the mods for old consoles, especially the portable ones...probably because I am still sad I never got a Sega Nomad :( - evozero, on 07/04/2009, -0/+3That thing is called the Dingoo A-320, something ThinkGeek conveniently omitted.
- inactive, on 07/04/2009, -0/+3It should be a felony to kill a SNES.
- MasterGrief, on 07/04/2009, -0/+3No power user, no front page. Unfortunate truth.
- pe5t1lence, on 07/04/2009, -3/+5Buy PSP, load hacked firmware, play any system emulator you want with no slowdown, sometimes even PSX games (the lack of L2 and R2 buttons are the only problem).
- StormsOfSteel, on 07/04/2009, -2/+4It's portable, custom work and exclusive. You won't see that one anywhere.
- ohmytodd, on 07/04/2009, -2/+4I WOULD BUY THIS! Make me one!!
- tgc1, on 07/04/2009, -0/+2As someone who has already gone that route, let me be the first to say, it's NOT the same. I've since been collecting old consoles and games. They're pretty cheap now if you go to thrift stores and the like. Get the stuff that looks kind of beat up, clean it up and give it a good home.
There's LOTS of life in those 20 year old consoles. - TVarmy, on 07/04/2009, -0/+2Dugg to be a rebel.
- danielcmetz, on 07/04/2009, -2/+4Plenty of people. That device is handmade, and it plays actual cartridges. It is so much cooler than any device on the market. The money also goes to supporting this artisan, which is much more worthwhile than funding the factories that produce the rubbish you're talking about.
- inactive, on 07/04/2009, -0/+2If you live near a high-school or university, try asking them if they have one and if they'll let you use it. As long as you can explain what you want to use it for, you might be able to convince them to whip something up for you. Alternatively, you could always build your own, there are numerous examples on the internet.
- deadasdisco, on 07/04/2009, -0/+2torrents are the best way to do it now. you can usually find packs of hundreds of games, most of em even come with emulators.
- inactive, on 07/04/2009, -0/+2Agreed. His portables are pretty amazing.
- MasterGrief, on 07/04/2009, -0/+2Simple Google search'll take care of it. It'd been years for me, too, until I looked yesterday-- there're still a number of ROM sites with huge collections, freely and easily available.
I found some internet relic called, fittingly enough, The Old Computer, that appears to host most of the console titles from the N64 to the Atari 2600. I only used it for SNES games, and it was great for that, but I'm sure it'll work for whatever old system you want.

As someone else who has gone that route, let me say that it's exactly the same for me at least. I gave away my snes and copier years ago. Neither running roms on a real snes, or actual carts on it, was worth the hassle compared to just turning on my modded xbox. - MasterGrief, on 07/04/2009, -0/+2http://www.instructables.com/id/How-to-Make-Your-O ...
- MasterGrief, on 07/04/2009, -0/+2He didn't wait until the Q&A to do that
- TVarmy, on 07/04/2009, -0/+2Let's say a Smart Car is essentially a portable Porsche, as it gets you from point A to point B just as fast when you obey traffic laws. See what's wrong here? The Porsche is rare and well made, and it's classic. Further, collectors love them both for their looks and history. It goes on the same roads and is constrained to the same speeds, but it's not the same.
- TVarmy, on 07/04/2009, -0/+2It's unethical to use time travel to show off. I have a time machine in my basement, but I'm only using it if my future self goes back in time to tell me I should use it. He'll be older and wiser than me, and I know I can trust him.
