- spaceninja, on 12/16/2007, -2/+70Great now Ebay will be full of Wii rain checks too.
- wilf_brim, on 12/16/2007, -4/+32Folks, this is a cute little way for GameStop and Nintendo to pull a little fast on on the financial analysts. Since the customer must pay the full price in December (now), yet not have to deliver anything. This mean that Nintendo and GameStop can book the revenue for December (CY 2007) without having to deliver anything. Pretty sweet deal for them.
- MadDoggie, on 12/16/2007, -0/+19There's a difference between a retailer making supply promises and the actual manufacturer doing so.
- ClownSuitCowboy, on 12/16/2007, -1/+17As a GameStop manager, I'll be the first to confirm that THE RAINCHECKS ARE RATIONED. There will be a quantity equal to 2 x the store's average weekly allotment of Wii systems. For my store, a smaller one, this means we'll be reserving only six Wii consoles. Don't think anyone who wants one can just walk in and guarantee one for next month.
- llurker, on 12/16/2007, -0/+14TFA says they ratcheted it up from 1 million per month to 1.8 last January. That is near double their original intended production.
Nobody in their right mind would have imagined investing the capital to produce 3-4 million per month, when all previous console sales have been much lower. - GeneralFailure0, on 12/16/2007, -1/+13...what?
- SaxxonPike, on 12/16/2007, -1/+11Sell it on eBay? You could probably get all your money back. Maybe more.
- iTorrey, on 12/16/2007, -2/+12I LOVE YOU RAINCHECK

Favorite commercial of all time - salinemist, on 12/16/2007, -0/+9Screw Nintendo, I bought my kids each a DS instead! Wait....
- yedigg, on 12/16/2007, -0/+8According to GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles) Revenues must be matched with Expenses...you shouldn't do what you are suggesting.
- AntBing, on 12/16/2007, -1/+8It's not as good as you think it is. I've had mine since launch, beat Zelda and Metroid, and it's now collecting dust. Nintendo is more concerned with spewing out old titles for the VC than bringing new quality titles and online play. Buy a different console. Especially if you have an HDTV.
- inactive, on 12/16/2007, -2/+9Why can't the submitter give better details? For a start, it's US only and Gamestop only so that rules practically everyone out.
- butiamjessica, on 12/16/2007, -0/+6That'll go over well.
Hey Jimmy look what Santa brought you!
Ohhhh a rain check! YAY!
Jimmy takes the rain check, points it to the TV, only to find out the rain check doesn't come with rain check sports. - qaelith2112, on 12/16/2007, -1/+7"Folks, this is a cute little way for GameStop and Nintendo to pull a little fast on on the financial analysts. Actually, no. One of the four criteria for revenue recognition will not have yet been met: Delivery of goods has not yet happened. As such, Nintendo will be deferring the revenue until the goods have been delivered. - macatizor, on 12/16/2007, -2/+8"It's very expensive to bring a new production line up and running," Sebastian said.
"It's not as easy as throwing on a switch." - hexydes, on 12/16/2007, -0/+6...because nothing says "Merry Christmas" like an I.O.U.
- kelowna4life, on 12/16/2007, -2/+8Yeah, your sort of right, it will inflate the december numbers. However, financial analysists are more concerned with quarterly estimates and sales rather than monthly.
- qualish, on 12/16/2007, -1/+6This man shouldn't be buried. He clearly understand accounting much more than wilf_brim. While Nintendo may receive the money up front it will be booked as cash and an offsetting liability. The liability denotes a future commitment they've entered with the buyer to deliver a good at a future date. Only upon satisfying that contract can the liability be reversed and revenue booked.
- opnickc, on 12/16/2007, -0/+5Companies can't sell what they don't have either.
Brilliant! - twtmc, on 12/16/2007, -0/+5I am an adolescent male and out of the 10 or so other adolescent males that I associate with that have Wiis, about half of them have sold them again. I am just about to sell mine to a mother of an 8 year old. Hopefully he will make better use of it than I have. Overall I found that it was not worth sifting through the crap titles for the system.
- Zippo, on 12/16/2007, -0/+5Well, in light of that, can I still preorder Battletoads?
- Dustmuffins, on 12/16/2007, -0/+4Why is this in the images section?
- MasterPain, on 12/16/2007, -0/+4I agree completely bought into the hype & now haven't played it for months. Looking forward to Smash though if they ever release it.
- Bamborzled, on 12/16/2007, -1/+4It's not some sort of grand conspiracy. Nintendo simply cannot match the demand, especially with the Christmas season.
- Borgcube, on 12/16/2007, -0/+3Well, when they saw how N64 and Gamecube fared, it is not surprising that they approached the new console with a bit of caution. If you compare the number of Gamecubes sold and number of Wiis sold, you can see why no one was expecting this.
- Shaflugi, on 12/16/2007, -0/+3Ramping up production will leave Nintendo with a bunch of useless factories when they finally meet demand. Surplus isn't any better than shortage.
- Asay, on 12/16/2007, -0/+3"It's no longer just the Dorito-munching teenage boy sitting alone in the basement."
Are they serious? Whats a great stereotype, because that's how all teenage gamers are of course. - SquareOne, on 12/16/2007, -0/+3Buried for mis-categorizing.
- MasterPain, on 12/16/2007, -2/+5Other countries don't count
- BrandonR717, on 12/17/2007, -1/+4"We're seeing 4-year-olds playing it. We're seeing people in their 60s playing it. We're seeing middle-class people including it in their entertainment systems in the home. It's no longer just the Dorito-munching teenage boy sitting alone in the basement."
Go ***** yourself. - Quirked, on 12/16/2007, -0/+3Was at Toys R Us at 5:20 AM this morning in the cold and windy rain. I was #73 out of 90 people who got one. People camped out over night! Total craziness.
- Archon810, on 12/16/2007, -0/+3WTF is a Velveeta? Yeah, I read the article to the end. Did you?
- jimmytootime, on 12/16/2007, -0/+2Damn It All!!!!!!
- inactive, on 12/16/2007, -0/+2A smart business decision that will increase Gamestop foot traffic at the expense of Wii scalpers.
- macatizor, on 12/16/2007, -5/+7This is where parents are slapping themselves for not buying that Wii they saw in the store 6 months ago.
- Borgcube, on 12/16/2007, -2/+4Basic enterprise? Dude, its not like they simply hire a bunch of elves to make Wiis out of nothing. They would have to build another factory and in case they did, there is no guarantee that they will get their money back once the holiday shopping frenzy quiets down.
- Stalks, on 12/16/2007, -1/+3Why does this matter? If the Wii's were in the stores right now, they would of sold them instead of the rain-checks. So it actually gives a more accurate sale figure for the christmas period, even though the demand outweighs the supply.
- ScareCrow87, on 12/16/2007, -0/+2Yes, that is an old strategy. Seen it with Furby, Cabbage Patch Kids, etc. Companies like Fisher Price get people to their isles in the retail stores, only to find the 'holy grail' missing - so they bought something either kinda like it or related to it. One major flaw with applying it here though - it only applies if you have something else to sell. In Nintendo's case, it isn't like Joe Jr. is going to buy one Nintendo product now and the Wii next month. You could argue that parents will buy their kid a DS for Christmas to hold them over for a month, but I would suspect that is HIGHLY unlikely. Yeah, parents will buy another toy to put under the tree until January, but it wont' be a Nintendo product.
- Tenlow, on 12/16/2007, -2/+4No, they didn't see one in the store 6 months ago.
I've only seen one in the wild, it was at frys as part of a "bundle" so it was $650 before taxes. And it was the last one left. Someone standing behind me to buy it while I was trying to talk them into selling it to me without the bundle. - derkmerkin, on 12/16/2007, -1/+3he's right though
- Myztry, on 12/16/2007, -0/+2Won't this just prolong the shortage? Many half-hearted people who would have dropped of the queue and say brought another console will instead be contributing to demand after Xmas. It's not like prepayment increases production.
- macatizor, on 12/16/2007, -0/+2I bought mine back in September by just walking into a store and buying it. Maybe I was just lucky. But even so, it was a lot easier to find one throughout the year than during the Christmas season.
- Myztry, on 12/17/2007, -0/+2I agree. But that's not what I said
- emjaymj, on 12/16/2007, -3/+5It depends. If you're a kid in high school or just generally not a busy person, I agree the Wii is a bit lacking in quality games. However, the Wii titles that ARE good (Zelda, Metroid, Super Mario Galaxy, Zack and Wiki, Resident Evil 4 if you haven't played it on another platform yet) are in my opinion a lot more fun than the top games the PS3 or XBOX 360 have to offer, so if you're like most people and usually by less than 5 games a year anyways, the Wii definitely has better titles to offer.
If you're an adolescent male, you'd probably want to check out another system first because you probably have too much free time on your hands. A handful of amazing games like these are enough to occupy my time, but some people have the need to buy a dozen+ games a year. Funnily enough, it's touted as a party system yet all of the Wii's absolute best games are single player. This will change in a few months with the release of Super Smash Bros. though, there simply is not another multiplayer game that can remain so damn fun for anywhere near as long. - crossmr, on 12/16/2007, -2/+4There is a reply button, you should try it out.
- stotty, on 12/16/2007, -4/+6And what if they fail to meet the demands? I ordered mine in the UK (my homeland) last year and was promised delivery from the first batch. When the time came to collect I just got shrugged off even though the supplier was making promises. I didn't get mine until over a month after the promised delivery date. Sounds like a gimmick to be cautious of to me.
- butiamjessica, on 12/16/2007, -0/+1LMFAO Jimmy! Sorry kiddo! :)
- billydisaster, on 12/16/2007, -0/+1From Marketing Week..
Nintendo, the gaming giant, has been forced to pull ads for its Wii console in the run up to Christmas as demand is already too high.
The campaign for Wii, created by Karmarama, will be replaced by ads for its handheld console, Nintendo DS.
