- Bodhesatva, on 10/11/2007, -11/+96Nintendo was getting several core criticisms this generation, and "little or no online support" was one of them. Great to see them reacting to their lack of content.
In olden times, when Nintendo didn't like something (such as the CD format), they'd stick with their guns and ignore all criticism, even while their boat burned and sank (such as the N64/PS1 era). They appear to be a lot more flexible these days. Kudos to them. - defectDS, on 10/11/2007, -17/+96I was so giddy until I read "become available next year." Hopefully they won't wait this long for online multiplayer.
- swavalier711, on 10/11/2007, -13/+63Things Nintendo will never do.
1) Give you up.
2) Let you down.
3) Run around.
4) Desert you.
5) Make you cry.
6) Say goodbye.
7) Tell a lie.
8) Hurt you. - alefox, on 10/11/2007, -3/+33pokemon for the wii just came out and has online multiplayer
- aggrazel, on 10/11/2007, -1/+27I hope they have free demos, I am leary to buy any software this way without a free demo. There are games on XBL that I never would have bought on title alone that after playing the demo, I just had to have.
- meepus, on 10/11/2007, -2/+27I think that Nintendo's strategy is brilliant. They are gradually introducing the Wii as a real console platform by trickling features in as the software is developed. The Wii is selling like hotcakes even still, and when things slow down a bit all Nintendo needs to rejuvenate hardware sales is introduce a new aspect to the Wii platform.
Online multiplayer? A few more people want to buy Wiis.
Online software distribution model? More people want to buy Wiis, and more developers want to develop for Wii.
Connectivity with DS? It'll work better than with GBA, it'll work wirelessly, and it'll open up more affordable creative venues for software devs.
And so on and so forth. The entire console platform won't have shown its face until after the end of next year, and by then third party support should be so robust that the Wii will be firmly entrenched as the runaway victor of this console war. I don't even an own a Wii, and would not consider myself a fanboy: it's just that Nintendo's marketing strategy is a flawless evolution of what they've been doing all along--focusing on the games. - Hockey37, on 10/11/2007, -2/+22Also Strikers in late July/early August.
- damnyooneek, on 10/11/2007, -2/+22they should update the firmware so it supports any external hd and their plan should take off
- AhrenBa, on 10/11/2007, -3/+20This is great news! Now, all they need to release is some information for an external (attachable) hard drive for the Wii. With downloadable new content on the way, the massive library of VC games, and game saves, people are bound to run out of space. What would be great is if they could release a firmware update allowing any USB 2.0 hard drive to work, but I would still be somewhat ok with a branded HDD if the price isn't too extreme.
Wouldn't it be great to have a Demo channel for upcoming retail Wii games, and then the Shop channel for the VC and indie games? Heck yes it would! - Bodhesatva, on 10/11/2007, -3/+20While I do agree with both Noah and defectDS, I also would add that I personally was afraid that Nintendo would simply never get the message.
Nintendo is well known for simply ignoring glaring criticisms (cartridge format? 3rd party alienation?) I'd love it if they had this sooner, but I'm also relieved that they didn't wait until it was so late that it cost them dearly in market share. Also, the "indie developer" touch is a fantastic idea. It gets the low-rent developers on their side from the get go. - robuk24, on 10/11/2007, -2/+17Good news, I'm surprised they are announcing this before E3. They must have some very big guns left to show off!
- Itsjustnoah, on 10/11/2007, -1/+15We all knew this would happen eventually, though its nice to finally hear about it rather than think about it.
- xerus, on 10/11/2007, -0/+14So by reading this... was I RICKROLL'd?
- Alphateam, on 10/11/2007, -0/+14They are selling all they can make. And they are making hundreds thousands a month. More than 360 and PS3 combined.
I'm sure Nintendo is doing all they can to not make money. - SkippyDoorknob, on 10/11/2007, -0/+13They talked about doing this at last year's E3 - several months before the Wii was even released.
- wiihuck, on 10/11/2007, -0/+13Madden in August. (3rd party)
- MrObjectional, on 10/11/2007, -0/+12Yamauchi may be laughing all the way to the bank, but you can attribute Nintendo's responsiveness to the fact that he's no longer the head of the company
- kravex, on 10/11/2007, -0/+12Strikers already out in Europe, has been for weeks.
- BryanCarr, on 10/11/2007, -1/+13...That was brilliant. How the devil are you getting buried? *digg up*
- Drakk0n, on 10/11/2007, -0/+11Does anybody have the website for Nintendo indie developers?
I know of wario world but it doesnt appear that they are to open to indie houses... - Karyyk, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10This is great news. With the Wii dev systems as inexpensive as they are, it's not too much of a stretch to see some truly full-featured games come out from the old-school 'guy in his garage.' This is good for Wii, good for new and hobbyist developers and good for gaming in general.
- jayhawken, on 10/11/2007, -13/+23Maybe Nintendo ought to concentrate on manufacturing more Wiis. I've never seen one in a store and I'd love to buy one. (Just not at eBay prices.)
- Zephkiel, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9Indie developers are already developing for the Wii. Capucine and Pollen Sonata come to mind.
- wiihuck, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9i don't understand why defectds is getting dugg up. there have been four posts now showing that online multiplayer is already out, more are coming out, and that 3rd parties are also involved. is it because of the new comment system?
- Flipperbw, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9rick astley ftw?
- tizz66, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10They are making as many as they can. Thing is, it'd be folly for them to go ahead and build more factories to make them in, because once the demand dies down, those factories will be useless and it'd be wasted money. Just be glad they aren't artificially restricting supply like some other manufacturers have been known to do :)
- op12, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8Exactly...a system like this doesn't go up overnight, and you can bet it's been in the works for quite a while. It has nothing to do with the criticism.
- SkippyDoorknob, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8They got the message months before the Wii was even released. They talked about doing this at last year's E3.
- anonatron, on 10/11/2007, -2/+10Nintendo did not have much of a choice in the N64 era, they had chosen a format and scrapping that to embrace a new format would mean an entire architecture change. It would be similar to Sony in their current situation with Blu-Ray, changing to a different format at this point in the game would cost a lot, not to mention the lost R&D from the original format. That is the beauty of online content, if a change needs to be made, it can be made without hardware changes.
- SkippyDoorknob, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8Desktop Tower Defense would work great with the Wii remote. And didn't Nintendo make a deal with the guy who did Line Rider? That would be a perfect fit for this service too.
- MatttK, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7I think another brilliant thing about this movie ist hat it forces the big developers to take it up a notch. Look at some of the trash that's been put out on the DS and even some of the junk put out on the Wii so far. Some companies think they can just port their PS2 games and strap on Wii control. Well if Joe Indie can make a half decent game in his basement and give it away for free or sell it for 10 bucks, you better believe we're going to expect Big Name Company to do better for 59.99.
- khyberkitsune, on 10/11/2007, -4/+11I would love to see Plasma Pong on the Wii. If they're wanting Indie games, that's the first one I would recommend!
- Bodhesatva, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7The official announcement is up:
http://blog.newsweek.com/blogs/levelup/archive/2007/06/27/reggie-on-his-big-plans-for-a-little-nintendo-wiiware.aspx - JonXP, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7Finally! I wonder how hard they're going to make it to get the SDK.
- Amablue, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7I wonder when the SDK's will be available and how much they'll be.
- jacobmp92, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7Or at least load-from-SD support... I'm low on space and have a 2 GB SD card that would really come in handy right now.
And I don't mean backup-to-SD like what it already has. I want to be able to play a game that is only on my card, and not sitting in the system memory. - Alphateam, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Wii console
Includes: Wii Console*
Wii Remote
Price SOLD OUT - aNoble, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5The point is that I can't watch Joost or Netflix "Watch it Now" on my TV without having to hook my laptop up to the TV (which is a pain in the neck).
When I watch movies I want to see them on my big screen with surround sound and not my 19" laptop screen with it's crappy speakers. - EPH99, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5This is great. And I thought my Wii couldn't get much better (online play excluded). One big thing worries me and that is where all this software is going to go? They should have mentioned something about this along with the announcement. My Wii is already about half full with Vc games and I'll certainly be storing them on Sd cards by year's end. Where is the hardware support Nintendo? Address this and the Wii could go down as the greatest console to date.
- SkippyDoorknob, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5They talked about doing this at LAST year's E3, months before the Wii was even released.
- turpenine, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5if you are so remorseful sell it one ebay and let somebody else have it.
- Sornos, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5Clearly you don't remember the Virtual Boy.
- LembasBread, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4This is why I think middle-man video game retailers don't have much time left. I don't think it will be long until downloadable games via internet (xboxlive, wiiware, steam, many MMOs) really take off. Cheaper prices and convienance make the process sooo much easier.
- maybeway36, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Videlectrix ftw.
- KingBabi, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6I can't figure out how to reply directly to Bodhesatva's comment, so I'll reply here.
As much as I like Nintendo, and while they are trying to remedy the problems they were criticized for before (online), they always fix them too late. In the N64 era they didn't have CD's, and switched to the Mini DVD's for the GCN, in turn, the GCN faced the new problem of lackluster (or should I say, virtually non-existent) online support, which they remedied on the Wii (or plan to, in any case). However, they are of course faced with the lack of HDTV support, and I assume they will fix this in their upcoming system. They have to cater towards the current generation's needs. - qualish, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6I wish I could digg that comment 100 times. That was flat out brilliant.
- merreborn, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4They're easy as hell to find if you're willing to wake up on Sunday morning and check the new weekly ad for Target/Best Buy/Circuit City.
It was taking 4+ hours for new shipments to sell out, *as of six months ago*. I'm sure these days, they've got the things in stock for at least a whole day. - BuGz213, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4we need better channel management also... how about a NES channel (that has all the NES games u download), then a SNES channel... etc.,
- ishgabibble, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Now Nintendo has no choice but to release a hard drive attachment. How are all these games going to be stored?
- turpenine, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5strikers has been out in the UK for some time and the multiplayer is very addictive. After that lots of online games will be coming all at once.
